The Executive

Bing J. Carbone is the thirdgeneration President of Modern Plastics, a global leader in highperformance engineering and medical-grade plastics, custom plastics fabrication, and precision plastics machining, headquartered in Shelton, Connecticut. With over 45 years of hands-on leadership experience, Bing has transformed what his grandfather Joseph C. Carbone started in 1945 into a thriving international enterprise serving aerospace, defense, medical devices, semiconductors, electronics, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and advanced manufacturing sectors worldwide.

In 2025, Modern Plastics celebrates its 80th anniversary—a milestone few family businesses ever reach. Under Bing’s leadership, the company earned ISO 9001 and continues to advance its quality systems, with current certifications including ISO 9001:2015 & AS9100D, ISO 9001:2015 & AS9120B (Defense & Aerospace), and ISO 13485 for its medical plastics business. Modern Plastics serves all of North America along with a substantial international customer base,

distributing high-performance plastics used in medical implants, defense and aerospace applications, semiconductor manufacturing, and custom fabrication.

The company relocated from Bridgeport, Connecticut—where it had operated for 64 years—to a sprawling state-of-the-art office and warehouse facility in Shelton in early 2011. The facility features a quarantined, environmentallycontrolled room for medical plastics storage, a sprawling industrial immaculate complex, and a retail store for cut-to-size plastics. Modern Plastics continues to expand its physical footprint, driven by consistent year-over-year growth under Bing’s leadership.

Since 2006, Modern Plastics has operated under corporate ownership as part of Plastics Family Americas—a partnership that has provided stability and resources while preserving local autonomy. Bing’s decentralized leadership model empowers decision-making with intimate knowledge of operations, employees, and customers.

Leadership Philosophy

BING J. CARBONE / WHATEVER IT TAKES

Bing's leadership philosophy is built on the foundation his grandfather established: "Whatever It Takes." He believes in servant leadership, positive reinforcement, and treating employees and customers as partners—not transactions. His management style emphasizes face-to-face engagement, ethical behavior, and building genuine, long-lasting relationships.

As Bing puts it: "I manage my business. My customers run my business."

Crisis Leadership & Innovation

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, Bing didn't hesitate. Within three weeks, he pivoted Modern Plastics' operations to manufacture critical personal protective equipment. He

created an entirely new Infection Control Division that produced over 50 million plastic face shields, desk shields, and other critical PPE products distributed worldwide.

This decisive action required adding 65 new employees and acquiring a new 10,000 square-foot building in less than a week to manufacture face shields. The project drew recognition from prominent government officials on a national basis, including a personal visit from dignitaries, US Senators, Congress people, Governor. When competitors were downsizing and furloughing, Modern Plastics was hiring and expanding—a direct result of Bing's philosophy: see the need, act fast, do the right thing.
