We had a gorgeous and sunny day at Nathaniel Cole Park. It was wonderful seeing so many families utilizing the entire park and participating in activities from ice fishing, to sledding, to roasting marshmallows over a fire. A huge thank you to Visions Federal Credit Union for sponsoring this free community event and to all the other organizations and businesses that participated to make this event a huge success.

The Broome County Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Services provides diverse year-round recreational opportunities. We welcome Broome County residents and visitors alike to enjoy our beautiful beaches, picnic areas and picnic shelters, play structures, family campground, boating, miles of trails for walking, biking or cross-country skiing, and much more! At 5 years of age John Reid was living in Miami when his school had a class on how to make a snowman. Being a bright young man, he pointed out to the teacher that it doesn’t snow in Miami but she insisted that one day he might need this lesson. Little did he know then that his family was about to move to Port Dickinson where he would have plenty of chances to put the lesson into action.

John quickly came to love this area and to excel in local sports. He ran on a State Champion X-Country Team at CV and went on to Play Division I Basketball and Baseball at Colgate (and in 2005 was inducted into the Colgate Hall of Honor) and played on the Syracuse All-Opponents Team, chosen by the players on the Syracuse Basketball and Baseball Teams. From college ball he got noticed by the Montreal Expos and was signed, earning him the notoriety of being the highest drafted player in the Triple Cities for 42 years.

Switching from baseball back to this area he has remained active in sports having taught, coached and officiated for over 94 seasons in baseball, basketball, volleyball, soccer and track & field as well as having worked at the Athletic Camps for 16 seasons. And he has ran a basketball league for 12 years and community little league for 10. But sports isn’t the only way he stays active as he has been teaching over 30 years in 5 different schools in the Binghamton Area, Cub Scouts for 8 years, Church Trustee for 6 years, Chairman for the last 3 years., Student Council for 14 years on local, state and national levels, Chenango Valley Board of Education for 11 years and Rotary for 4 years. And if that isn’t enough he still somehow finds time to do things with his wife, sons Chris and Andrew and his beautiful grandchildren. As John says “I love living in this community. High levels of Education! A change of seasons. Friendly people. Athletic, Social and Artistic Opportunities in this area. My wife, Jacquie, and I even had Season Tickets to the BC Pops for over 20 years!”.

All of us at My Town would like to thank John for all he is done in the community to help make this a great place to live!

Dr. Sotirios “Sam” Chianis

From One Famous Greek to Another.

Plato once said “Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything.

It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful.” Plato’s words, like all of his philosophy, comes from experience and in this case to hear him speak of music you would think Plato had time traveled and listened to the musical talents of Dr. Sotirios “Sam” Chianis.

Sam is a distinguished 93 year old man with boyish charm and a life story well told and lived. He grew up during the Depression in California with his father and three siblings, his mother having died shortly after his youngest sister was born. His father a Greek cook would gather the family together for music as a soul bonding force for his children. Sam excelled at turning music into emotion with his Greek Santouri (as well as with his cimbalom) and was sought after for Greek weddings and other events before going on to college and earning a BS in Music, the first such degree ever offered to anyone at what is now known as the California State University at Long Beach.

With limitless talent, Sam during his career authored books about Greek music, song & dance. He also created recordings, taught at UCLA, and wrote & performed music in Hollywood for movies with such greats as Ernest Borgnine.

But what we all want to know is how did a man as famous as Sam, who traveled around the world as a brilliant performer of traditional music, come to grace our area. Well it all had to do with some prompting from one of his students who was also a professor at SUNY Binghamton, then Harper College, who convinced him to become the 1st Professor of Ethnomusicology at Binghamton, and also the first person to teach the course anywhere in NYS. Determining a need to fill the East Coast with a greater appreciation for music, he and his beautiful wife Olga moved to this area and raised three children while he transformed this community with his knowledge and his talents. So in demand were his talents that Sam split his time between teaching at Binghamton and then driving at night to get to Yale where he also taught there.

Throughout the years Sam’s energy to educate others on music and to entertain them with his self-build Santouri has always remained constant. Those at Hilltop, a residence Sam currently calls home, are fortunate to hear him play.

Joseph & Evelyn Capanna Fehrenbach Marriage is a daily blessing

Marriage is like a dance. . . two people moving rhythmically together yet making every step uniquely their own. And so, it is fitting that Joseph and Evelyn Capanna Fehrenbach’s story begins with them meeting at a dance while the two of them were pursuing different life paths. Joe pursuing his Master of Science degree and eventually joining IBM and Evelyn working at Sears.

Yet despite different work and life pressures they found an unbreakable bond between the two of them. Now 56 years later Joe is proud to say their love and their marriage has remained constant and strong. “Being married to the one you love is truly a wonderful experience. We have been blessed with five beautiful daughters and eight beautiful grandchildren.�

And it is nice to know they continue on with their duet no matter where they rest their head including at their cottage in the Thousand Islands, on vacation in France, Germany, Austria Italy, Hawaii and California or right at home with friends and family.

For 40 years now neighbors have come out to support Fire Company Station 2 at its annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser. The Endicott Elk’s Lodge was the site of 2020’s Road to Hope Pasta fundraiser for a great cause. Local Police Officers from the Broome County area will be riding from Reading Pa to Washington DC to honor fallen men and women of our police. Team Broome will once again be riding in this national event which covers a demanding 250 mile trek over 3 days.

Each team wears a wrist band in honor of a fallen officer. The ride is not

just a demanding one but a very emotional event with memories and bonds of friends and family. So many people & businesses came out in support at the Elk’s Lodge. Thank you to all! Be sure to check out the Team Broome Road To Hope FB page for updates & more events!

Sonny Spera

You never know how strong the roots until the wind blows Dr. Herman ‘Sonny’ Spera is a man who does everything with passion, a man who is more concerned with his character than his reputation because as he says “your character is what you really are and your reputation is merely what others think you are.” And perhaps that is why he does not brag about his honors which include being elected into the Union Endicott Hall of Fame and Graduates of Distinction Club or being elected into the Maine Endwell Hall of Fame and Founders Day Recipient or even being named to the top 40 under 40 in Broome County because to him the outpouring he has given this area is not for recognition but rather to feed his soul and to nourish our community.

Sonny is a lifelong resident of Broome County, having grown up in Endwell since he was 2. He was a great basketball player at UEHS but you might know him better as the owner of Progressive Dental and all the different ways he and his family give back to the area.

On a professional side he has donated over $1.2 million dollars in free dental care for those who can’t afford it through the Annual Doctors with a Heart Day and has been a career mentor for students as well as hosting high school and college students that have an interest in going on to dental school. He has also presented to over

60 local schools and thousands of children on children’s dental health month every year and has donated time and talents to over 100 different local area events and causes. Outside of the dental profession he has donated the use of land near his Endwell office for a garden to grow food and vegetables for help feeding the poor in our community (the MEALS program run by Rachel Murat at MEHS), participated in Smiles for Santa, Norwich YMCA, Montrose Halloween, wine and chocolate festivals, Kirkwood Town Fair, Binghamton Heart Walk/Run and so much more.

Personally he has “coached basketball in our area, from starting a youth basketball foundation - ME Hoops-which spawned off a girls AAU travel basketball organization- the Southern Tier NY Flyers, to travel basketball, to high school varsity, JV and modified levels. He is also a member of the Elks Club and Sons of Italy. And his wife has also been active in helping others as she has chaired the “Taste of the Tier” event for Cystic Fibrosis Research for over 10 years and had taught religious education for over 20 years.

Sonny says “I love everything about this area. first of all- quality of life, meaning you can enjoy great arts, theater, music, cultural events, sporting events . . . the sense of community, when someone is in need the community pitches in and works together to raise money . . . so many people just roll up their sleeves and say “what can I do to help”. . . the food is amazing!!! . . . locally owned and run restaurants with local recipes, like sweet pasta sauce . . . so much to do and enjoy, quality recreation, golf, skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting . . . if you can’t find it you ain’t looking for it!! . . . healthcare is exceptional . . . amazing parks, free carousels, playgrounds, tennis . . . the university adds to the diversity of cultures along with more sports and events to partake in . . . and the people here are the best - the best anywhere in the world - smiling faces, people that let your merge in traffic or let you go ahead at the supermarket if you’ve only got two things or have a baby in tow generally polite courteous people . . . so yeah, I love this place, and am glad we settled here and raised our family here.”

Did You Know

Whether you went to high school here or have just driven by this beautiful old building on Main Street in Johnson City you are sure to have noticed what a colossal school this really was. In fact the design was such a big undertaking that it was decided to build it one half at a time for use. It really is hard to imagine it being just one half of its current size when you see it now. The old school built in 1915 really is a tribute to the many great architectual images seen throughout the area!

Nicholas Terzella Growing up in a large Italian family in Chenango Forks Nicholas ”Nico” Terzella always

knew he wanted to cook and own a restaurant. Even as a kid he always loved cooking with his grandmother for the family. And upon graduating from High School he pursued his dream and enrolled in the New England Institute for Culinary Arts. Now the owner of the Southern Tier Cheesesteak Co. he has been in the restaurant field for some 24 years with a history to be proud of.

“My first actual job cooking was at the Johnson City Field Days cooking fresh cut frenchfries and fried dough. I thought dropping basket of fries was so much fun I couldn’t believe that I was paid to do it”. Nico soon started cooking at many of Binghamton’s restaurants like Giovanni’s before leaving for Culinary School. Upon graduating with awards, he worked at many prestigious restaurants in Napa Valley and even worked under Iron Chef Robert Trevino in Puerto Rico and as a private chef for an actress in Manhattan.

In 2010 Nico opened his first food truck and started serving anywhere you’d find hungry people like concerts and sports venues. It was then that he met Luke Bryan, becoming his & his bands favorite food truck & being invited back twice a year to cook backstage.

This fantastic exchange led to being referred to many other stars/acts including Kenny Chesney, Florida Georgia Line, Cole Swindell, Little Big Town, Marin & many more.”

“Besides being my hometown Binghamton is a great place to live. People here have a real sense of community and the landscape in the area is second to none. We try to focus our energy on giving back to the community.” And he’s done just that and more, giving to local schools and programs like “No Kids Go Hungry” which means a lot to Nico being able to help children in need right here in the United States which may get overlooked.

In the future Nico would like to open many more cheesesteak outlets as well as returning back to fine dining at some point to open an Italian restaurant. Richard B. Henry “Try to find beauty in everything…”

are the words of advice Richard B. Henry, shares with all his students. “No matter what your subject is, there is beauty waiting for you to capture it.”

Richard has been an Adjunct Professor of Art in the Continuing Education Program at B.C.C./SUNY BROOME since 1987 where he teaches drawing and painting while also lending his talents for workshops at the Fine Arts Society. If you know Richard you wouldn’t be surprised that the love he shares for creating art expands out so strongly to the pride he has in so many of the artists he passionately brags about, to share their stories and work, while very humbly giving only small mentions to his own truly talented achievements. Just one reason of many which gives us great pride to share Richard’s story.

Richard grew up in Athens, PA. Remarkably, it was when he was just in 3rd grade, that he became aware of his calling for art. It was a moment so simple, where his teacher had drawn something on the board. But at that moment Richard was hooked, He knew he wanted to be an artist. Later in middle school he would spend 3 weeks a year working on his grandfather’s farm where he felt the connection he had with the countryside and the beauty and life it held. This connection and observations of his surroundings would lend to Richard’s Artistic Style. In High School Richard played three high school sports; wrestling, football & baseball. He even continued to wrestle & play rugby in college.

But his passion for art never left him. He can’t give enough credit to his high school art teacher Mr. Swank who helped inspire him and gave so much support to all his students in everything they did. Amazingly, Richard’s paintings in H.S. were already being sold.

After H.S. Richard continued to study art at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and then the Edinboro University of PA where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.

As with every graduate the decision is always which path to pursue for a career. With Richard it was no different. Should he go with the early stability commercial art offers or pursue fine art. Not backing off from hard work, Richard’s first job in 1980 while searching for his career was in Sayre working for the North American Car Company (Railroad) repairing rail cars, tankers and repainting them. But it wasn’t too long after that he accepted a position as a Technical Illustrator in Endicott which lead to his next job and a career spanning 25 years as a Graphic Designer with IBM and as a Senior Creative Graphic Designer with Lockheed Martin’s In House Design Group.

During these good years though Richard never lost sight of his passion for fine art.

He continued to paint and study, mastering many different mediums from oils to watercolors developing his own style with works being exhibited throughout the Northeast. And at age 55, he decided, it was time to cut the cord and further pursue his true passion in fine art; painting, teaching, showing and learning.

Richard finds his inspiration in music styles such as Classical, Blues, Rock, Indie & even Keltic which becomes his catalyst for painting. And he’s happy to share, that although he teaches, he is always learning. Richard’s current practice in Art is Plein Air (painting outside), an art form made famous by French Impressionists which brings the artist out of the studio to paint from life, landscapes & nature in the moment.

To his list of credits, Richard’s art has been exhibited regionally at numerous events and galleries to include: The Luna Gallery in Salem, Mass., The Cooperative Gallery 213 in Bing., The West End Gallery in Corning, The Heart Song Gallery in Greene, The Avenue Art Gallery in Endicott, The Fisk Gallery in Delhi, The Gallery of CNY in Cazenovia, Just Art in Ithaca, Reflections Gallery in Bing., The Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, The Anam Cara Gallery, Bing., The Orazio Salati Gallery in Bing., The Bundy Museum, The Phelps Mansion, The Roberson Museum, SUNY Broome, and The Tupper Lake Arts Center. You can even find his work on large collaborative projects such as this incredible 70 foot mural in San Carlos on the Sea of Cortez pictured below and the Nature Exhibition at the Robert Moses Nature Center in Massena, N.Y.. And this April you can catch Richard’s work on Exhibit at the North Brewery in Endicott.

We’ve Got Talent

Avery, Frink & Lord Five years ago 3 talented musicians from the area decided to form a band to share their own style of classic rock songs we all love to hear. The band, Avery, Frink & Lord is comprised of Mark Avery on drums & vocals, Mike Frink, guitars/vocals and Dan Lord, bass and vocals.

All three musicians started very early learning their craft. Mark played in Union Endicott’s Marching Band in high school and started playing in a band with his dad when he was only 13. Mike went to Homer High School playing the trombone in the school band. He later picked up a guitar and has been playing in bands since 1965. Dan also was in his school’s band and marching band at Central where he played the clarinet, bass clarinet and bass guitar besides being a singer in the school’s stage band. You may also know Dan from his own business the Dan Lord Bass Guitar Studio where he teaches and even offers repair service on guitars. The history all these guys have had in music and performing with various bands brings back quite a few memories. You may remember them in some of the bands they were in like Hard Times, Cross Country, 100 Proof, Anthem and Heater.

Although they play an endless list of classic rock favorites you’re sure to join in on, they are also in the process of writing their own material. “As a group, we love performing and seeing the people get into our versions of classic songs.
