DIY (Do It Yourself) Car Maintenance Tips You Can Handle – By Staff Writer In trying to live a more economical life, I am getting better at handling repair jobs and maintenance jobs that I used to pay professionals to do. In addition to home improvement projects, I have learned that I can save plenty by taking on some auto repairs and maintenance jobs myself. Trust me, I am not an auto expert and not even very mechanically inclined. But I have found the kinds of repairs that just about anyone can handle quickly and easily, with minimal expenses. I have decided to hold on to my car rather than sell it, so by taking care of these repairs, I have saved quite a bit of dough over the past several months.

1. Air Filter • Tools You Need: None • Time to Complete: 10 minutes You need a new air filter for your car or bike every 6-12 months. You can pay a mechanic and give up your car for a day, or you can replace your air filter at home in about ten minutes.

First, find your filter under the bonnet of your car. It’s in a black rectangular box with metal clips on the side. Check your owner’s manual if you don’t see it as soon as you pop the bonnet.

2.

Open up the casing, and check out how the air filter fits inside it. Make a note of which way the filter faces.

3.

Remove the old air filter, and insert the new one exactly how the old one sat.

4.

Remember to close the metal clips when you’re done.

That’s it. For extra savings in the long run, you can extend the life of your new air filter by hitting it with some compressed air to clear out any debris.

1.

Lift the blades, as if you were washing your windshield by hand, and remove the old blades.

2.

Pay attention to how the old blades connect to the metal arms.

3.

On most models, you’ll see a tab on the underside of the wiper. Push the tab to remove the old blade.

4.

Attach the new blades, being careful not to bend the wiper arms or scratch your windshield. Line everything up and make sure the new ones are secure and tight.

If you get distracted or just can’t remember exactly how the new blades should fit on the wiper arm, don’t worry. The packaging for the new blades should have a general set of instructions and a helpful diagram.

2. Windshield Wipers • Tools You Need: None • Time to Complete: 15 minutes

Most spark plugs need replacing after about 30,000 miles, but check your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle is any different. While changing spark plugs might sound like intense work, it’s a pretty simple process. You just need to set aside some time and exercise patience. Don’t rush, because you need to install the replacements in a specific order.

1.

You should be able to locate your spark plugs fairly easily, because they’re attached to thick rubbery wires.

2.

You’ll find either four, six, eight , twelve plugs, depending on how many cylinders your car has.

3.

Remove the wire to the first spark plug only.

Do not remove all of the wires at once. Your spark plugs are installed in a certain order, which you need to maintain.

4.

Use your spark plug socket and extension on your ratchet to remove the first spark plug.

I laugh when I visit my local auto parts shop in town and see that they’re having a sale on wiper blades, offering free installation. The free installation only applies if I buy the most expensive blades in the shop, so I started changing them on my own. You’ll need new wiper blades after about six months or a year of use. You probably tend to go a little longer before asking your mechanic to change them, but you shouldn’t deal with the danger of streaking your windshield while you put off an inconvenient trip to the auto shop. Wiper blade setup differs quite a bit from car to car, so you may have to follow a few different steps according to your owner’s manual.

Basically, the process is similar to changing your air filter:

Install the new spark plug, then tighten it with a wrench for a snug fit. Do not over-tighten.

Re-attach the spark plug wire.

Repeat these steps for each spark plug, one at a time.

4. Oil and Oil Filter • Tools You Need: Ratchet, oil filter wrench, oil pan, funnel • Time to Complete: 30 to 45 minutes Experts say you should change your oil every 3 - 6 months, . Whichever benchmark you decide to use, you can save time and money by handling the change yourself. Before you start, keep in mind these precautions: 1.

Never change your oil when your engine is hot. Park, wait for it to cool, and then get started.

Driving around the block to heat the car and loosen the oil can result in a more effective drain, which is good news, but you must let the engine cool before going to work.

2.

You’ll have to jack up your car, so make sure you’re comfortable safely handling a jack.

Now that you’ve covered safety first, it’s time to get a little dirty.

1.

Get under your car and locate the vehicle’s oil pan. It shouldn’t be hard to find.

2.

Unscrew the drain plug and drain all of the old oil into your oil pan.

3.

Once all of the oil is drained, replace the drain plug.

4.

Go back to your engine and remove the old oil filter with your oil filter wrench. (Be careful, because the oil filter contains some old oil as well).

5.

Lubricate the rubber gasket on the new oil filter with some new motor oil.

6.

Fill the new oil filter about two-thirds of the way with new oil.

7.

Screw in the new oil filter. Hand-tighten it only.

8.

Fill the engine with new oil, using your funnel.

9.

With a dip-stick, double check your oil level to be sure you’ve added enough.

10.

Discard the old oil filter and properly discard the old oil.

MONTHLY MAINTANANCE TIPS Changing your oil is the dirtiest job on the list, but it might be the most rewarding too. Though you can find plenty of quick-service stations nearby, when you think about going possibly two times or once a year, the expense and time commitment adds up.

5. Battery Maintenance • Tools You Need: Wrenches, corrosion-removal fluid, wire brush, rags • Time to Complete: 20 minutes The key to keeping your car running smoothly and efficiently is a good battery connection. Just a few specks of crunchy white residue on the terminals can keep your car from starting. A simple visual check of the condition of your battery will tell you when you need to perform this process.

Remove your battery terminals, which should be a fairly straightforward process. Make sure you always remove the negative cable first. If they’re stuck, use a flathead screwdriver to pry them loose.

2.

Clean the terminals. Some say Coca-Cola will work, and it does, but I suggest using a more professional product from your local auto parts shop. Keep in mind that most of these solutions are nothing more than baking soda and water, so if you’re feeling extremely economical, feel free to create your own cleaner. Generously apply the fluid to the terminals, and clean vigorously with your wire brush.

Rinse the cleaning fluid with a little water.

4.

Dry the posts with rags.

5.

Replace battery terminals.

A dead battery can be one of the most frustrating car problems, because it’s usually so simple to avoid the trouble. Especially if you’ve had the same battery for a few years, pop your bonnet every few months and take a look at the battery to see if it needs a simple cleaning.

6. Radiator Flush • Tools You Need: Phillips-head screwdriver or wrench, rags, radiator flush solution, coolant, funnel, used coolant receptacle • Time to Complete: 30 minutes Your car’s radiator and cooling system need to be clean to work efficiently and effectively. With normal wear and tear, your car’s radiator builds up deposits that can disrupt the cooling system. A radiator flush is a quick and inexpensive way to keep your system in shape. Consult your owner’s manual to find out if you need to flush the radiator yearly or every two years.

CARZ & BIKES MAGAZINE ZAMBIA Locate the fuel pump fuse on the fuse box. If you don’t have a fuel pump fuse, find the relay that operates the fuel pump. Start your car, and with the engine running, pull the fuse or relay out. When the engine switches off, you’ll know that you pulled the right one.

2.

Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel filter.

Find two open-end wrenches that are the correct size for your fuel filter fittings (usually you’ll need two different sizes).

3.

When the wrenches are in place, put a rag over the fitting to protect yourself in case there is still some pressure in the lines.

4.

Hold the wrench that fits on the actual filter, and turn the other wrench counter-clockwise until that bolt comes out.

5.

Slide the fuel line off the bolt and set the bolt aside.

6.

Repeat the process for the other side of the fuel filter.

7.

Remove the old fuel filter. Most filters are held in place by a clamp that you can release by using a flathead screwdriver. Be careful here, as the old fuel filter could still have some gas in it!

8.

Change the fuel filter washers, which are located on the bolts that connect the fuel lines to the fuel filter. Make sure to match the new ones up correctly.

9.

Install the new fuel filter, which is the opposite of the process you performed to remove the old fuel filter.

10.

Return the fuel pump fuse or relay before you try to start the car.

This project is another “DIY advanced level” task.

Dealing with the fuel system is serious business, so if you’re unfamiliar with any of these terms and don’t know where to start, just visit your mechanic for this regular service.

Nissan GT-R is assembled in a climate-controlled "clean room." Each twin-turbo V6 is precisely assembled from lightweight, highly durable aluminum and magnesium parts. It takes the exacting standards of the plant's most talented and devoted engine builders to produce the engine that has redefined what a supercar can be.

To see the pure passion, the true Japanese DNA of the GT-R,® simply lift the hood. Only four master craftsmen in the world are allowed to hand-assemble the GT-R®’s engine. The Nissan GT-R is a 2-door 2+2 sports coupe produced by Nissan and unveiled in 2007. It is the successor to the Nissan Skyline GT-R although no longer part of the Skyline range itself. Between 1969 and 1974, and again between 1989 and 2002, Nissan produced a high performance version of its Skyline sedan called the Nissan Skyline GT-R. This car proved to be iconic

for Nissan and achieved much fame and success on both road and track. The Nissan GT-R, although no longer carrying the "Skyline" badge, has heritage in the Nissan Skyline GT-R, which was only available in the United States as a grey market car.

Similar to the later generations of the Skyline GTRs, the Nissan GT-R is a four-wheel drive with a twin-turbo 6 cylinder engine and has the signature four round tail lights. However, the GT-R is an entirely new model sharing little with its Skyline siblings and is a complete redesign from previous Skylines rather than an incremental evolution; the four-wheel-steering HICAS system has been removed and the former straight-6 RB26DETT engine has been replaced with a new V6 VR38DETT. Because of the GT-R's heritage, the chassis code for the all-new version has been called CBA-R35, or 'R35' for short (where CBA is the prefix for emission standard), carrying on the naming trend from previous Skyline GT-R generations. The GT-R has also retained its Skyline predecessor's nickname Godzilla, given to it by the Australian motoring publication Wheels in its July 1989 edition.

Suzuki Hayabussa 1350cc

The Suzuki Hayabusa (or GSX1300R) is a sport bike motorcycle made by Suzuki since 1999. It immediately won acclaim as the world’s fastest production motorcycle, with a top speed of 303 to 312 km/h (188 to 194 mph).

In 2000, fears of a European regulatory backlash or import ban, led to an informal agreement between the Japanese and European manufacturers to govern the top speed of their motorcycles at an arbitrary limit. The media-reported value for the speed agreement in miles per hour was consistently 186 mph, while in kilometers per hour it varied from 299 to 303 km/h, which is typical given unit conversion rounding errors. This figure may also be affected by a number of external factors, as can the power and torque values.

The conditions under which this limitation was adopted led to the 1999 Hayabusa’s title remaining at least technically, unassailable, since no subsequent model could go faster without being tampered with.

Thus, after the much anticipated Kawasaki Ninja ZX-12R of 2000 fell 6 km/h (4 mph) short of claiming the title, the Hayabusa secured its place as the fastest standard production bike of the 20th century.

This gives the unrestricted 1999 models even more cachet with collectors.

Besides its speed, the Hayabusa has been lauded by many reviewers for its all-round performance, in that it does not drastically compromise other qualities like handling, comfort, reliability, noise, fuel economy or price in pursuit of a single function. Jay Koblenz of Motorcycle Consumer News commented, “If you think the ability of a motorcycle to approach 190 mph or reach the quarter-mile in under 10 seconds is at best frivolous and at worst offensive, this still remains a motorcycle worthy of just consideration. The Hayabusa is Speed in all its glory. But Speed is not all the Hayabusa is.”

FEATURE MACHINE VS MACHINE Hayabusa is Japanese for “peregrine falcon”, a bird that often serves as a metaphor for speed due to its vertical hunting dive, or stoop, speed of 290 to 325 km/h (180 to 202 mph), the fastest of any bird. In particular, the choice of name was made because the peregrine falcon preys on blackbirds, which reflected the intent of the original Hayabusa to unseat the Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird as the world’s fastest production motorcycle. Eventually, the Hayabusa managed to surpass the Super Blackbird by at least a full 16 km/h (10 mph).

The first generation had a 1,299 cc (79.3 cu in) liquid-cooled, inline-4 engine with sixteen valves driven by double-overhead cams. This configuration, technologically unremarkable for that time, delivered a record-setting claimed 129 kW (173 bhp) at the crankshaft by virtue of the largest displacement ever in a sport bike, and a ram air system that forced cool, pressurized air into the cylinders at speed. Combined with sophisticated aerodynamics, this powerful engine pushed the Hayabusa’s top speed far above the Honda CBR1100XX Blackbird by a significant leap, contrasting with the incremental gains that preceded the Suzuki hyper sport entry. The 1997 carbureted CBR1100XX had previously only inched past the previous top speed record holder, the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-11 of 1990.

The Hayabusa’s abundance of power at any engine speed made the Hayabusa easier to ride by giving the rider a greater choice of gear selection for a given speed and stunning acceleration.

Reflecting in 2009 on the initial design, the creator of the Hayabusa’s look, Suzuki’s Koji Yoshirua, said that the intent in 1999 was, “to create a somewhat grotesque design and create a strong initial impact.

Body Art: The Art Of Tattooing HISTORY AND BASIC INFORMATION Tattooing the skin is the oldest profession in the world. The Japanese, Aztecs, Mayans, Aborigines, and Africans all have had tattoos.

The oldest recorded human to date is referred to as the ice man.

He was found under what was left of an iceberg near the Austrian border in Italy. Carbon dating places the ice man around 5,300 years old. This was a cultural surprise because he had a few tattoos.

Before his discovery, it was popular belief that the oldest culture to tattoo was Egyptians over 3,000 years ago. So the ice man out dates the Egyptians by 2,300 years The ice man had a small cross behind one knee and above his kidneys there were a few tattooed lines about 15 cm long. The first sign of tattooing in the west was from Tahiti by a man named Captain Cook in 1771. The Tahitian word for tattooing was “Tatau” which was adopted because it’s the sound of the traditional tattooing. Initially the traditional tattoos were applied by a stick with a comb like head attached to the end. They used another stick to tap the first; this achieved a stabbing motion.

This ancient type of tattooing is rapidly gaining popularity once more around the world.While receiving a tattoo you would not honour your experience if you showed any sense of pain or discomfort and the practice usually was a ceremony that lasted for days often resulting in shock for the patron. The tattoo machine we all know and love today is nothing

more than a modified version of the first electric engraver.

In the US, people started seeing tattoos regularly on sailors that had been to distant lands.

They brought them back as permanent souvenirs. In the 1800’s and 1900’s sailors navigated there voyages by the stars and constellations. The “Nautical Star” that you see on every teenager trying to fit in with the crowd is one of the oldest tattooed symbols. It symbolizes the North Star and means that the one adorning such a tattoo is looking for their way.

Thirty years ago, tattoos were just for bikers and prostitutes, at least this is the common idea. Fifteen years ago they were just for rock stars. In today’s society more people have a tattoo than not. I read a quote once from a famous musician that said “If you want to be different, then don’t get a tattoo.” I guess that was right because nowadays tattoos are common.

TATTOO MEANINGS Over the years tattoos have become little more than decaling the human skin. Most people get a tattoo and spend their whole life never knowing the true meaning.

Others are confused on the meanings of tattoos and get something that might have a completely different definition. Tattooing has been a part of every culture known to date, and each culture has its own meanings for different images. Here is a list of tattoo’s that have meanings you may be surprised of. There are so many

images to choose from, I am forced to pick but a few of thousands. When you offer a tattoo to a client, or choosing one for yourself, you should always research the true meaning.

APPLE - An apple seems like a tattoo a teacher would get, but it really is a symbol recognizing the easily tempted nature of man. It is a symbol that is brought to us by the story of Adam and Eve in the Christian Bible. The story is the down fall of man and was brought on by man eating the forbidden fruit.

ARM BAND - Arm band tattoo just seem like a nice decoration for any one, but they are a symbol of slavery and imprisonment. The tribal arm bands you see today are reminiscent of the identification markings between African tribes, while barbed wire is a symbol of spending time in prison or being a slave.

BIRDS - Birds are colorful animals that fly everywhere they go, most would say they are a symbol of freedom. They are in fact a symbol sailor’s used to signify coming home due to the migratory patterns of most birds. The best depiction of this is the swallow or sparrow. Often you will see sparrow and wallows tattooed holding one another or with stars. This is a symbol of finding your way in the dark, since most sailors spent months at sea and the night was the most dangerous time to sail due to not being able to see any obstruction in the water.

The history of the ‘Tattoo Artist’ is another story. There are many tattoo artist’s in Zambia but only a few of them are known and respected. There is an unspoken code among tattoo artist’s. This code is based on respect, loyalty and secrecy. I caught up with one well known and respected tattoo artist in Zambia going by the name ‘Zambia’s Tattoo Guru’ who has been featured in countless Newspaper interviews, Television interviews including an interview on CNN’s Inside Africa Program.

Mutakela Lisimba aka

Zambia’s Tattoo Guru is one of the best tattoo artist’s in Zambia.

Quite recently he prefers calling himself Africa’s Tattoo Guru. This claim has caused a stir amongst other tattoo artist’s who have challenged his claim but one fact that still remains unchallenged is the fact that he is the most publicised tattoo artist in Zambia. He has been featured in our national newspapers, he has been featured on radio; he has been featured on national television and online publications as well. On the international front, he has been featured on CNN via the award winning cultural affairs program “Inside Africa” where he was interviewed by world renowned Journalist Errol Barnett.

Mutakela has studied tattooing in Mauritius and is a Certified ‘Tattooist’. He loves tattooing to the bone and anyone can see this as he has tattoos all over his body.

He has self inked his body while other tattoos have been done by 18 other tattoo artist’s within Zambia and abroad.

On first sight, you can easily see him as being a Rapper as his image suggests. Guess you are correct, in that he is indeed a Rapper with a couple of songs already produced and playing on radio, while his album is still being worked on.

One other thing which also differentiates him from other Zambian tattoo artist’s/musicians is the fact that he documents all his work through Photo’s and Videos and out of this habit, he has a Rated 18 Documentary in the making which will be available for the public to buy in 2018.

Young, creative, ambitious and kind of on the wild side, Mutakela is indeed destined for greatness on the Zambian and literally the African Map as he has ventured in the delivery of a service which is fairly new in Africa. The tattoo business has a lot of potential to

become a lucrative business because a lot of people want to have tattoos. A visit at his ‘Tattoo Parlour’ is a clear sign that Zambians are now fully interested in having tattoo’s on their bodies for either pleasure; or as a fashion statement, or just to be different!!

As a back up service, he is also offering his clients who might later change their minds on having a tatttoo on them, a chance to have them removed through a painless removing technology through a state of the art laser machine.

For less permanent tattoos, Mutakela has temporary tattoos which are more less like stickers which you can stick on the body and can last for up to 3 months.

Hip-Hop’s popularity and global reach make it a very powerful medium with which to spread messages and influence people.

We give credit to and eulogise our very own local legend the late Hip Hop artist Jordan Sinkala of the group “Impi” who passed on in January 2014 as a perfect example of an artist who spread knowledge in his music and talked about the atrocities/corruption that some bad politicians do; how they only remember us during election campaigns; how we need to love each other and so on and so forth. Through his music, we can tell that he felt a great responsibility for delivering conscious content in his songs as this would change society and he fought to make a major impact on the world and Zambia in general. He did not want to squander the platform he was given as indeed his time was indeed short.His music contained conscious content and substance—meaning the content was long lasting, important, and profound, with more relevance and “real meaning” than other content in other artist’s songs.

Impi was never famous or had sold out shows, sold out albums like JK, O.C or Mampi. It is a disheartening fact that conscious music doesn’t always get as much exposure as other types of genresin music. Several artist’s feel that more pressure should be put on the people in charge of pushing and breaking records to support conscious music, so that there is more balance in what is played in Zambia.

Music in Zambia nowadays frequently focuses on being in the club, partying, and having a good time in general. Although par-

ty content isn’t usually as highly regarded as other kinds of subject matter, it has always been a part of music, with its own important role to play.

It is great to note that fairly new upcoming artists’s such as Kondwani Kaira popularly known as Chef 187 is notably the best local rhyme spitter in the Hip Hop game in Zambia right now. He creates a balance between conscious content, club content and the braggadocios style of Hip Hop. Other running mates to the number one spot are his blood brother Macky 2, his other brother in arms Alphonso and of course Kopala rival Slap Dee closely following a few steps behind is comrade Bra B and Tiye P. Indeed Kopala Swag Affiliates are running the local Hip Hop game. We have delved deep into the rhymes and intricate ways of thinking of the Kopala guys and the guys are deep, tight and are trying to use the Zambian language to the fullest of its potential.

Chef 187 is grooming himself to be a legendary MC whose complex rhyme style and vivid street imagery has influenced a whole new generation of MC’s in Zambia. For those new to Hip Hop phrase’s, an MC stands for a “Master of Ceremony”.

Often, Hip-Hop lyrics focus on topics that can be controversial, such as violence, sex, drugs, alcohol, power, and money. These forces are sometimes said to have a negative impact on society and basically condemned or banned in allegedly consecutive countries like Zambia. But artistically speaking, they are inherently attention-grabbing subjects—which is why numerous classic Hip-Hop albums have revolved around them and will continue to do so in years to come.

Although many MC’s write content that is exclusively based on real life, there are also plenty of MC’s who feel that there is a place in Hip-Hop for fictional content.

They believe that because MCing is an art form, you shouldn’t have to limit your imagination and the scope of your music. Chef 187 combines both fictional content and real life content to mold a style that is comparable to no one.

Right now Chef 187 is indeed holding the Number One Spot without a doubt with only two officially released albums to his name, his current album being “Amnesia” and various singles and songs he has featured on from other Zambian artist’s and quality hit videos which portray the Hip Hop lifestyle.
