JUST A FEW WORDS FROM OUR EDITOR

Editor Dr. Joanna Delia - joanna@justbeautymagazine.com

And so, a fresh copy of Just Beauty Magazine has just landed in your salon. Do you read it? Do you leave it for your clients to read? When was the last time you revamped your service portfolio or reviewed your product lines? Over this summer, I decided to turn a couple of summersaults and used the lower demand over these months to change everything! It was a change of brand, look, premises, concept... and it was an intensely refreshing experience! When you’re at your best, it is vital to stand back for a moment or two and re-think your strategy... Even if it’s good, you know that you’ve wondered many times how well everything would work out if you tweaked a little bit here and there and improved the look of that corner, or the way you do something. It might take courage, but no one ever got hurt from a few butterflies in their stomach. My advice is not to get stuck in your ways. Read, smile, think, brainstorm, re-vamp, re-organise, then think again. Take the plunge. The Just Beauty team search far and wide from shore to shore to keep you updated. Give this little mag a second look... and remember to always beautify.

The local nail industry has grown rapidly in the past 10 years. The number of nail technicians has boomed and with it, a vast number of nail brands have also been introduced. The industry also brought with it alarming warnings about the hazardous chemicals found in nail products which can affect the health of the professional as well as the consumer, since various allergies have been reported around the globe. Consumers are constantly being warned by social media articles, visuals and online reports to read labels on nail products and question their nail technician about ingredients to heed any warnings. Nail technicians nowadays are constantly under pressure to use safe and effective products and to take precautions in keeping chemical exposures under control.

Products should have a clear defined label.”

Greener

salon You’re busy. We know that. You’ve got to keep up with your clients. You’ve got to sort out the paperwork and the marketing. Then there’s the actual upkeep of the salon. And then there’s stock taking and all those other tasks that come with running a salon. However, is recycling and being green on that list? How can you make your salon greener? 1. Energy & Water Keeping the right temperature for your customers is essential, as is providing hot water for washes and keeping the nail lamp on. Your salon depends on energy. So what can you do to make it more eco- and budget- friendly? • Invest in the latest electrical products available. Modern standards ensure less use of energy which will help you reduce your bills. • If you have space for panels, go solar. • Leaving electrical appliances on standby will still generate electricity. Turn the lights and all appliances off when it’s time to close. • Do not obstruct any natural light. Leave windows or any light sources clear. • Opt for energy saving light bulbs where possible. • Use rechargeable (not disposable) batteries for your appliances. • Install low flow plumbing fixtures. • Match the water level to the size of the load when doing laundry.

3. biodegradable packaging materials A lot of products in your salon are packaged in non-biodegradable material. Ask suppliers to provide products in refillable containers to reduce waste. Alternatively, make sure you dispose of non biodegradable packaging in the right bin.

4. Candles Soy candles are greener than paraffin and beeswax candles. They also last longer!

5. Hair As you know, hair can actually be recycled. When someone is having hair that’s longer than 16cm chopped off, it can be sent to organisations who will donate it to cancer patients, or wig makers who would be interested in purchasing the leftover material. The above tips can bring your bills down and help you run a greener salon!

2. Natural Ingredients Harmful chemicals can be found in hair dyes, nail polish and nail polish removers. Try to buy products that contain natural ingredients.

Customer Care in the

Beauty Industry Customers can be amazing, loyal and fun to interact with. However, what can you do to retain your professionalism with very difficult customers at your salon? Here are some tips: • It cannot be repeated enough that the customer is always right. It's important for your business to keep all your clients happy. Some individuals may have a reason to complain, so do listen carefully to what your customer has to say. Understand the situation and address your customer in a friendly and polite tone. No matter what the situation is, never be arrogant. • Try to resolve and satisfy your client, but only if the customer is right. Do not be spineless. Assert your position in a friendly manner. Set your boundaries but remain diplomatic. • Everyone likes to hear his/her name. Endeavour to address your customer by his/her name, and allow him/her to also address you with yours throughout the discussion. • If errors have been made along the way, apologise. An apology can highly improve communication, and the truth is always appreciated. • Be transparent with your customers. A lot of clients are disappointed due to a lack of communication prior to a treatment. Talk the process through with your client as you go along so that they know there is full consent between the two of you. Keeping your customers informed on the products, treatments or expected results may avoid unwanted disputes. • If the situation gets out of hand or way too tense for you to handle, refer the customer to a colleague or ask the customer to meet up or call at an agreed time to discuss the matter when heads are cooler. • Go the extra mile and be ready to offer a free service or a good discount to compensate your clients.

Remember, a loyal and satisfied customer is key to networking. Negative referrals may tamper with your business’ reputation!

Throwback trends for the

Autumn/Winter Season ...Continued

Because we are looking back at the wild crazy 90s, neons are an essential element. Nails will be taking over this factor with bold bright glowin-the-dark shades and dotty patterns. Think BjÜrk in a nut-shell... or nail-shell, rather. Neon yellows and oranges with blues and greens is a great combination. If your client is looking for something quick and simple, just go for one bold colour of choice. Glitter and sequins are also very much in, and was showcased on designer Ashish's choice of models at the LFW. This can also be combined with the neon varnish mentioned above for that 90s rave factor. Don't worry so much about accurately applying the sequins. You’re going for the 'haphazard' look.

20

SEPTEMBER 2015 - issue 23

SEPTEMBER 2015 | issue 23

Hair

Upstyles are taking a bit of a breather for this season. The 70s dictates that we wear our hair down and flowing with the hippie wind. A good amount of hair gel was a staple presence at the NYFW. You client can opt for a slicked back gel look for the fringe crown, while keeping the rest of her locks sleek and on her shoulders. Layers are also being cast aside, as well. Continuing with the 70s theme, the bed hair middle parting is also making an appearance. This can be played around with a zig zag technique to channel a bit of 90s, or if your client wants some body, she can go for a plain parting and beach waved ends.

Make Up

This season’s two major make up tips contradict each other. One the one hand, both New York and London catwalks saw make up free models, or as it’s now titled, no-make up make up. Bare faced looks with just a smidgeon of flushed-look lip gloss will definitely be big this Fall. The other extreme is bold geometric eyeshadow and eyeliner. Again, make up artists are turning to neon shades for striking features. One could call it an almost-celestial look. Work with the defining points of your client’s facial features and use them to join the dots. Max Factor has actually teamed up with the latest Star Wars movie to promote a new range of make up products specifically designed for this look.
