But despite our rational brains, I think that the upcoming season and the fact we start a new year holds something magical which inspires us to wish things we long for could appear out of thin air! We try to make this happen by dropping hints to the ones around us in the hope that they will purchase the stuff we want but can’t afford to buy for ourselves... But material things apart, the season inspires us to wish for ways to better ourselves. I’m sure you would agree that it is common at this time to hear clients say ”next year I’m going on a diet”, or “I will take better care of my skin or hair, and here’s where we come in! We are in a wonderful position. People ask for our advice - they trust us! So please, do some magical wishing and aim to better yourselves - keep up-to-date with the latest innovative products and treatments, read up interviews by the experts and recommend small measures which can change the way your clients feel about themselves. Isn’t it wonderful if you can be part of the mystical presence of happiness that the season is associated with?

NEWS Thirteen Maltese hairdressers, clients of Beautimport Ltd, attended a cut and colour course at the Lisap training centre in Milan last October.

THE first premium ProNails BAR

The high fashion brand of nails, ProNails, has just landed at your favourite shopping complex at level -1, The Point, in Sliema. The opening launch of the first premium ProNails bar took place on Tuesday 5th November where the press and various TV celebrities joined the team of Nail Technicians in celebrating the onset of innovation and style in the nail industry. Check it out for yourself!

The first day was a hands-on colouring session where they learned two systems of colour using ammonia-free products. The first technique is called Briance or Glossing. It is a colour refreshing technique with a developing time of just 5 minutes that makes hair extremely shiny. The Briance technique involved the use of Dous tone-on-tone colour together with Fashion Light Mousse. The hairdressers then worked with Easy Absolute 3, Lisap’s third generation of Ammonia-Free colour which is also free of PPD and resorcinol. The practical was performed on live models, many of whom had a high percentage of white hair, so that each participant could personally see that Easy Absolute 3 gives complete coverage of white hair even though it is so gentle. Some models needed to lighten their hair up to 4 shades and even this was achieved without problems. These are remarkable results for an ammonia-free colour. The second day of the program saw Fuori Di Testa’s Johnny Alamango teaching Vertical Cutting Techniques. The idea is to have cuts that are easy to do and meet 80% of your daily client requests: “I need a change but I don’t want to lose length.” This practical session was performed on mannequin heads. In between training sessions the group was given a guided tour of Lisap’s state-of-the-art production facilities. The final day in Milan was spent visiting the Duomo, the Galleria and the wonderful shopping streets of Milan. The group was accompanied by Corinne and Patrick Farrugia from Beautimport Ltd, local agents for Lisap since the late 1980s. Last September the distributors of Code Zero Hair Interpreters held a seminar to launch the CAPTIVATE CUT Collection for AUTUMN/WINTER 2013/2014. They also launched the new Colour Drops, six new Vibrant Colours, with vegetable liposomes. Several hairstylists attended the seminar where they learnt new techniques for E.color.cy Colors, which are Ammonia-free and PPD-free colours.

This year we have launched 50 new ProNails premium salons, but this is our first nail bar. If the concept works well we will certainly reproduce the idea in other countries.

Having visited Malta a couple of times, what's your standpoint on the Maltese nail industry? As a beautiful island in the Mediterranean, I notice a unique blend of cultural influences. On the one hand there is a strong presence of the nearby Italian fashion scene mixed with a London hip street-style and a local Maltese vibe. There is a lot of creativity and optimism in Malta and it shows in the nail industry and their customers.

THE secret to beautiful hair colour the colour consultation!

Salon colourists credit the ultimate success of the hair colour result to the consultation. This is the basis of how the colourist selects, mixes, and applies the colour. It is also important to have a good initial conversation so that the client has realistic expectations of how the colour will turn out.

Step by step Questions the colourist should ask: The Clients Motivation What are you looking for in a colour service today? Are you colouring for a specific occasion? Her motivation for colouring is very important, because it impacts the formulations and application method. Common responses the hairstylist will get from the clients are: to cover grey hair; to give a lift; to refresh a look; to fix a colour mistake; to add shine/depth to colour; to adjust to the season; all-over colour or partial. Establish a long term goal The colourist should establish what is the client’s long-term goal. The quality of the service performed is dependent on what the client wants down the road. For example, if she wants to have black hair this month, but be a blonde next month, this may cause a conflict. So have a plan for future colourings. Establish Boundaries What are her boundaries? What does she do for a living? She may or may not want people to “notice” that she’s coloured. Some women, like receiving compliments about their hair colour and do not want the service to be obvious. What is her colour history? Have you coloured your hair before? Tell me about what’s on your hair now. The potential end result is directly linked to the colour history and condition of the hair. Previously dyed hair reacts differently to virgin hair when new dye is applied. Establish colour approach needed to “fill in” virgin growth to match the rest of the hair strand, and also whether all-over colour is needed.

Aftercare - for clients to protect their investment Colouring hair is an expense which and should be cared for accordingly. When coloured hair is left unprotected and exposed to sun, water or heat, it can become porous. This results in color fade and loss of shine. Colourists should always refer their clients to professional care products to take home. Kadus Color Radiance Shampoo will clean and condition coloured hair while protecting the colour from fading. IRONING • Divide the hair into 4 sections. • Use Ionic Styler plate on roots, shaft and ends respecting the following temperatures: - 185°C on bleached and damaged hair, 5/6 strokes. - 215°C on natural damaged hair, coloured and chemically treated hair. - 230°C on natural, fine, resistant and afro hair, 10/12 strokes 5. RINSE • Rinse hair with water for 5 minutes. • Wash hair using Moisture Lock Shampoo. • Apply Enhancer Moisturizing Masque, leave it on for 5/15 minutes and rinse. • Apply Moisture Lock Conditioner to seal in the treatment.

6. FINAL STEP • Rinse and move on to the final drying. After the blow dry apply Shimmer, which contains Argan oil. Realize the Sublime Smoothness blow dry.

WASHING Do not rinse the lather completely between one shampoo and the other. Rinse the last shampoo carefully. APPLICATION Be careful not to use too much product. Comb the hair using the Fine Toothed Comb to remove excess product. Start the application from the lock near the nape. IRONING Always check the ends of hair. If they are too dry, reduce the number of strokes. Attention: Apply technical procedures at least 15 days before or after the Discipline treatment. The application of Discipline with Amino Bond Complex, together with the use of the ironing plate at a temperature over 200°C, might remove the particles of colour on the external part of the cuticles, especially red pigments. For that reason it might cause a slight loss of colour. If this happens it is possible to restore the colour with a matching tone. You can use Shimmer at the end of the final blow dry in order to increase softness and shine. To maintain the results of the treatment at home use Moisture Lock Shampoo, Moisture Lock Conditioner and Enhancer Moisturizing Masque.

The variety of looks at the Autumn/Winter shows was impressive. Make-up mostly gets more grown-up and ladylike. Feline Eyes are popular whether it is feline shaped shadow in bold colours as seen at Jason Wu, who used a brilliant purple shimmery shadow, or feline-flicked liner with a smokey eye as seen at Dior. The smokey eye: Heavily made up dark and dramatic eyes - pair with nude lips like at Elie Saab; gleaming gunmetal was used at Donna Karen. Grunge made a comeback at Versace, Rodarte, Missoni and Yves Saint Laurent with smudged eyeliner and a nude matte lip.

The following questions may be asked by hairstylists wanting a further understanding of the action of FORM3D. What is FORM3D and how can it help my clients and business? FORM3D allows you to offer a brand new service to your clients. It’s a world first! Explain to your clients that it is a Sculpting system which reworks hair movement and keeps the shape in place for up to 6 weeks. They will love it and come back time after time for a salon service taking only a little longer than their regular blowdry. Is it a perm? No, to call it a perm would be misleading as FORM3D is very different both in design and application to a traditional perm. With FORM3D the hair is gently “softened” with the sculpting cream and moulded with fingers. Unlike a traditional perm no rods are required. The sculpting fix is also different to a traditional neutraliser as it is not rinsed from the hair but used as a styling lotion for instant results. In the box I have 2 products – a cream in a tube and a fix in a bottle. What are these for? The cream is for moulding and shaping the hair. The fix is applied after rinsing out the cream and is blow-dried straight into the hair to fix the style. What is PQ-68? It is a special resin in the fix which gives FORM3D its unique ability to work. It ensures that the elasticity, volume and newly created movement is retained. I notice on the ingredients’ listing that Bamboo is A COMPONENT OF FORM3D – what is the benefit of this? Bamboo acts as an antioxidant and strengther. can FORM3D be reapplied after 6 weeks? Yes – like conventional chemical services, it can be applied every 6 weeks to the root area only ensuring no overlap. What sort of hair can I use it on? There are 2 variants available - one for Normal hair and one for Coloured hair. What type of shampoo should I recommend for home use? A low pH

sulphate-free cleanser like Kitoko or Colour Care would be ideal. The best conditioners are always water soluble and paraben and wax-free. Do you recommend Form 3D for bleached hair? No, there is no strength available presently. However if the hair is highlighted with 3% and in good condition, this is acceptable. My client has afro-type hair – can FORM3D be applied? Afro hair is fragile; therefore select the coloured option of FORM3D if working on delicate hair. If the hair is in good condition is it possible to colour it the same day? Yes but colour first then use Form3d as the hair cannot be shampooed for 48 hours after a FORM3D application. Can I use Eraser on the same day as FORM3D? Only if Affinage Eraser is used first as the hair should not be shampooed for 48 hours after a Form 3D application. Can the Sculpting Cream be applied without the Fix? No, the cream gently softens the cuticle and allows the shape to be created. The Fix is important as it fixes the shape for up to 6 weeks. The PQ-68 enables this.

Can FORM3D be used for root lift? Yes – root lift, volume, texture and sculpting. Can FORM3D be used to straighten hair? Yes – gentle relaxing or straightening lasting up to 6 weeks can be achieved. What effect would washing the hair regularly have on how long the style will last? The style will hold even if you wash the hair regularly. It is not washed out. the Model has short hair and looks amazing, however please advise whether Form3D can be used on longer hair? YES if root lift is desired. It is effective on shorter hair as it has less weight.

LIPS - The winter trend is for matte pink and berry stains to replace painted lips; and autumn's ox-blood paves the way for maroon in winter. - Pink-based, matte lips go well with cool skin tones. - Whether you've got a natural or smokey eye, if you are simply after definition go for glossy nude lips which was a popular option with make-up artists this Winter. NAILS - Dark, bewitching colours are big this season. Olive-toned nails have been seen combined with gunmetal and slate blue; while emerald green, navy, glossy blacks, black plum and burgundy are popular too. - Femme fatale reds: retro reds in Tomatoe were seen at Valentino and Chanel; and Garnet shades were big at Burberry. A quirky take on grunged red was seen at Holly Fulton when it was combined with a black French Manicure tip. - Nude or naked nails are huge this season too along with a short and square shape with rounded corners, as was frequently seen on the catwalk. - Opt for the squaletto shape for clients who wish to keep their long lenghts. Update long almond and stiletto shaped nails by giving them a square flat top. - Along with the weather, nail art is getter cooler too this season in terms of popularity.
