The Updates department of CAE is a fast-paced multi-disciplinary environment. Our team of mechanical designers have the unique opportunity to touch every system of a flight simulator as we upgrade old products to the latest standards of training and technology.

Working in an office setting or on-site around the world, our main tool is Creo Parametric (Pro Engineer), a CAD modelling software used to design components and assemblies.

The illustrations included in this section are hand-rendered examples, and do not depict actual CAE Inc. simulators, components, or other proprietary information.

RAPID PROTOTYPING 3D printing is used to validate ideas, or for the final product. Since each simulator update is unique, all plastic components are either machined or 3D printed.

As rapid prototyping technology advances to greater accuracy, scale, and material capability, more of our components will be manufactured this way.

SHEET METAL DESIGN Due to our manufacturing setup, sheet metal is the preferred material for the majority of update applications.

Considering the principles of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), assemblies are designed to be manufactured with the fewest operations using the most standard tools.

MODELLING AIRCRAFT PARTS A cockpit for full flight simulation consists of original and re-created aircraft components. Detailed CAD work is required to accurately model these components. Aircraft controls must also be loaded to behave true to real life.

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS Creating safe products involves working closely with a Structural Analysis group. Hand calculations and static analysis are used to determine which parts need to be sent out for more detailed analysis.

I had the opportunity to contribute to the Process Control industry selling Fisher Control Valves (subsidiary of Emerson) at Laurentide Controls. As the saying goes: “If it flows through a pipe, it’s probably controlled by a Fisher.” These valves take signals from a control system to open and close, controlling the flow of a fluid.
