Tall Fescue: A Substitute of Kentucky Bluegrass
Tall fescue is a species of cool-season grass native to Europe but is now commonly grown in the United States. In particular, the low-maintenance nature of turf type tall fescue seed makes it a popular alternative to other common lawn varieties.
Characteristics of Tall Fescue Compared to Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue requires less maintenance work. It can withstand low water conditions and droughts far better than alternative common grass species such as perennial ryegrass. Turf type tall fescue grass seed is a great way to add color to an area. It keeps its rich green color throughout most of the year. It’s a popular choice for school and college fields or public spaces because of its high tolerance to foot traffic. While Kentucky bluegrass is also commonly used in highly populated areas, many species of Kentucky bluegrass are not very tolerable to stress damage. Kentucky bluegrass can stop growing altogether if the temperatures get too hot. For this reason, opting for turf type tall fescue seed over Kentucky bluegrass seeds may provide better results long-term and in hotter climates. Although turf type tall fescue requires mowing more frequently than Kentucky bluegrass, it is more resistant to weeds. This leads to better results and fewer problems further down the line. Luckily, tall fescue is not commonly prone to disease and is fairly insect repellent as long as it is not overwatered.
