SEEN & HEARD IN ROANE COUNTY

11 Facts That Could Save Your Life Some Day.

By O.I. Seenya • Kittrell’s Kitchen, on Gallaher Road, receiving another 100 on her health inspection score, FIVE times in a roll! This is unheard of. • A Hardees worker seen walking in with a McDonalds drink and a bag of food. • Which will it be...a Target or a Home Depot in Kingston?

Clans of long ago that wanted to get rid of their unwanted people without killing them used to burn their houses down - hence the expression "to get fired."

1. If you get stuck in riptide, remain calm and swim parallel to shore. Swimming to the shore will just tire you out faster. 2. When crying for help, call out specific people (eg. "you with the green shirt!"). It makes people more likely to act and not be affected by the bystander effect. 3. In survival situations, while it will change depending on your body, remember the rule of threes: 3 minutes without air (maybe you're buried in snow following an avalance) 3 hours without shelter against the elements 3 days without water 3 weeks without food 4. Most phones are able to dial 911 even without service or a SIM. 5. Additionally, 112 is the international 9-1-1 in most places. 6. If you see a photo of yourself (or anyone else - particularly children) where they only have one 'red eye' from the flash, this could be a sign of retinoblastoma (a type of eye cancer). 7. If caught in a burning building, get low. The breathable air will be near the floor. 8. Learn the self-Heimlich. 9. Do you have a desk job? Be sure you get up at least once every two hours and walk around for 5-10 minutes. Doing this reduces the chance of developing blood clots in your calves. 10. If you're a man and you pee on one of those pregnancy test, if it comes up positive you may have testicular cancer. 11. Just because the light turns green doesn't mean it’s safe to go.

Precious Memories By: Kay Christopher

Dessie’s Drive-In

The first real job I had was at Dessie’s Drive-In Restaurant. Dessie Mayton owned it, and it was located directly across from Roane Hosiery on old Highway 61, north of Harriman. The restaurant was located in a small trailer with a small room built on to it. The mill workers were her biggest customers. They would call in their orders and we would fill them. Her husband would then deliver them to the lunchroom at the mill. At the time I worked there, they were completing the new highway 61 and we had a lot of those workers, too, and some of them were awful cute! I remember my first day at work. I wore a yellow, cotton dress and an apron. Due to the excitement of having a job, I had not eaten anything that morning and I didn’t feel well. After I’d been there a couple of hours, I fainted and hit the floor. When I came to, I started throwing up. Yes, right in the floor of the restaurant. Dessie was so patient with me, though. She cleaned me up, helped me up, and I continued my shift. After that, I made sure I ate before I went to work. I made $4 a day...which in the mid 60s, was a lot of money, and I used the money to buy school clothes for the next year. The biggest bonus for working at Dessie’s was that I could eat anything I wanted for free! Since we were poor growing up, I never got to eat in a real restaurant, so I enjoyed every bite of the store bought hamburgers I could eat. These small roadside family businesses are long gone, and so are the factories, but growing up in the Harriman/Emory gap area was the best experience a person could have. It’s sad to know our grand kids will never experience the small town feel that we grew up with and appreciated.

Which Plants Cause Allergies?

Insect-pollinated plants have bright flowers and heavy, sticky, pollen grains that tend to stay put and cause few allergies. It’s the wind-pollinated plants that cause the most problems for allergy sufferers. Their small, dull, inconspicuous flowers produce clouds of tiny, light, pollen grains that are blown aloft for great distances and can easily penetrate window screens. To increase the chances that at least some pollen grains will reach the appropriate female flowers, plants produce many more grains than are needed—and some end up on our hair, on our clothes, and, alas, in our eyes and nasal passages.

April 18 – May 3 May 18 – June 2 June 16 – July 1 July 15 – 31 August 14 – 29 September 13 – 27 October 12 – 27 November 11 – 25 December 11–25

The Big Offenders

Pollen counts are high in the spring and fall. Trees, grasses, and weeds are responsible for most windblown pollen. The big offenders are: Large shade trees such as oaks, maples, and beeches; tree pollen emerges in the spring. Most lawn grasses; grass pollen emerges in the spring and continues through summer. Common weeds such as lamb’s-quarter, pigweed, and ragweed, which may produce a million pollen grains on just one plant. Some weed pollen begins in the summer; ragweed, a major allergen, causes problems in late summer and fall. Goldenrod, which blooms along with ragweed, is often blamed for allergies, but it is bee-pollinated and causes few problems. There has been a huge increase in hay-fever sufferers in recent years, partly due to a growing interest in fruitless and seedless “litter-free” trees. Many of these are males that may be litter-free, but they are definitely not pollen-free. To make matters worse, fewer female trees are being planted, so less pollen is being caught. Instead, it falls to the ground, where it can be stirred up by mowers and foot traffic.

May’s Birth Flower

Best Times for Fishing One hour before and one hour after high tides, and one hour before and one hour after low tides. Inland, the times for high tides correspond with the times when the Moon is due south. Low tides are halfway between high tides. During the "morning rise" (after sunup for a spell) and the "evening rise" (just before sundown and the hour or so after). When the barometer is steady or on the rise. (But even during stormy periods, the fish aren't going to give up feeding. The smart fisherman will find just the right bait.)

When there is a hatch of Everyone knows about birthstones: the special stone assigned to flies—caddis flies or mayflies, commonly. (The fisherman will each month. Each of them has a meaning behind it. Every month also has birth flowers which are a lot easier to give to have to match his fly with the hatching flies or go fishless.) that special someone! When the breeze is from a westerly quarter rather than from the north or east.

Form

May's birth flower is the lily of the valley, which signifies sweetness, humility, and a return to happiness. If you want to show your loved one that your life is complete with them, give them a few lilies of the valley. The other May flower is the hawthorn plant, which represents hope and supreme happiness. Hawthorne signifies that you want only the best for the recipient.

What is Planting by the Moon?

Planting by the Moon is a great way to help plan your above and below ground crops. Plant flowers and vegetables that bear crops above ground during the light, or waxing, of the Moon: from the day the Moon is new to the day it is full. Plant flowering bulbs and vegetables that bear crops below ground during the dark, or waning, of the Moon: from the day after it is full to the day before it is new again. Old-time farmers swear that this practice results in larger, tastier harvest.

If you don't remember someone, use deflection Opinions differ on what you should do when someone is all, "oh my god how are you remember how much fun we had in Spanish class???" and you have zero idea who she is or what she is talking about. Bluestein says you should go ahead and admit it. Martinet, however, cautions that this could make your alleged onetime friend feel bad. Instead, she has a couple of tips. You could wait until a third person comes up and hope this person utters the mystery lady's name. Or you could excuse yourself for a moment and ask an actual friend to supply you with the necessary info. Bluestein offers a final idea — praise your mystery buddy's memory. That gives you a generic response that doesn't require to exactly admit that you don't remember French class, much less her.

Pastor Matt Cannon | Lee Village Baptist Church Her hands were soft and fluffy; so was much of the rest of her body. Johnnie Mildred Cannon had a soft heart, too. This is especially true when it came to me and her other grandchildren who were blessed to know her as “Nannie.” She had a strong backbone, though, strong enough to make it through the Great Depression, World War 2, periods of societal upheaval, plentiful personal struggles, and many other tough times during her 88 years of living. As of May 8th, it has been 13 years since her passing. But this column isn’t about her death; it’s about her hands, soft and fluffy.

Love is like a beautiful flower which I may not touch, but whose fragrance makes the garden a place of delight just the same. - Helen Keller

Even with all of this, it is something her hands were responsible for that I wasn’t even aware of until after her passing that means the most to me. It has to do with her Bible. Nannie loved her Lord and she loved His Word. She’s the one who taught me that if you read 5 chapters of the Bible on Sunday day and 3 chapters every other day you can read the whole thing in about a year. And that is exactly what she did every year for so many years that she lost count. After her death I was offered her Bible, the one she had used and loved for so long. As soon as I accepted it, it became my most prized possession. The reason for this is what her hands, soft and fluffy, had done to her Bible’s leather cover. There are two spots that have been worn smooth, one on the front cover and one on the back. These spots were smoothed out over time as her hands, soft and fluffy, held her Bible in her lap as she feasted on the meat of the Word of God day after day. A Christian doesn’t become faithful by happenstance or accident. Christians become faithful by faithfully reading and adhering to the truths found in Scripture. Nannie was faithful; the worn spots on her Bible reveal why. More than that, they serve as a continual testimony and challenge to me to do what she did. Life can be hectic and finding the time to read and meditate upon the Word of God can be challenging. But those two worn spots remind me of a woman who diligently remain steadfast in her commitment to hearing from the Lord daily through the pages of His Word. Through the years, she found the time. Through the years she remained faithful. Through the years, she forged a legacy of faith. And she did it all by holding on firmly to Jesus with her hands, soft and fluffy.

Bible Quest

Who was the father of Abraham? How were the family warned that someone wanted to kill the baby Jesus? How did the sailors discover Jonah was responsible for the storm? What did the chief priest and Pharisees give Judas to enable him to help arrest Jesus? How old was Josiah when he became king of Judah? What was the name of Abigail’s first husband? Why did Jephthah flee to the land of Tob? Where did the hypocrites “love to pray”? Who did Paul heal at Lystra? Which animal did the ten spies liken themselves to, when compared to the people of the land of Canaan?

Heavenly Humor

A parishioner dozed off to sleep during the sermon one Sunday morning. ”Will all who want to go to heaven stand,” the pastor said. The entire congregation stood except for the lone sleeping parishioner. The pastor implored them to sit down and continued, speaking dramatically, “Now will all who want to dance with the devil, please stand.” Just then someone dropped a hymnal on the wooden floor, and the sleeping man jumped to his feet and looked around sheepishly. “Well, pastor, I don’t know what we’re voting for, but it looks like you and I are the only ones for it.” A pastor‘s wife called and asked him to pick up some organic kale for that night’s dinner on his way home. He arrived at the store and began to search all over for organic kale before finally asking the produce clerk where he might find some. The young clerk seemed confused by the pastor’s request, so the Pastor said: “Look, this kale is for my wife. All I need to know is whether it’s been sprayed with poisonous chemicals.” The visibly horrified clerk replied, “No, Reverend, you will have to do that yourself.”

Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit, Luke 6:17, 20-26 Behold, your reward will be great in heaven! If you are poor now, you will be rich in Heaven. If you are hungry now, you will be filled up in Heaven. If you are sad now, you will be laughing in Heaven. If people hate you, and leave you out, and call you names because you believe in the Son of God, you will be loved and welcomed in heaven. Sometimes God gives us little rewards on earth, too. Think of all the things for which you are thankful. That's really nothing compared to the rewards you will get in heaven. God rewards us for loving him and sharing with others. U C E T Q G R I A C C O U N T G N Y C U

Bible Beat Problem solved

On the way out the door to church, Mrs. Smith accidentally dropped the cake she had made for the bake sale. With no time to make a new one, she ingeniously set a roll of toilet tissue in the center of the cake to give it support and then slathered icing around it. To conceal her embarrassment, Mrs. Smith planned to buy her own cake at the sale, which commenced immediately following services. Though she hurried down to the church basement after worship, She was horrified to find that her cake was already sold! Her shock was compounded the next day at the monthly book club at the home of a friend. There on the kitchen counter was the cake she made for the bake. “What a beautiful cake, she said, not knowing what to say. “Thank you, the friend said, smiling. “I made it myself.

Social Security Taxable

You have got to be kidding me!

I've stopped attempting to be all things to all people. I've learned to focus on the things I do best, and I have heard this statement many times, so this month I will explain how to determine if your Social Security is Taxable. the people who need them most. To determine the taxpayer’s portion of taxable Social Security Life's embarrassing moments have a much shorter smack and now quickly move to my "hilarious benefits, add these amounts together: memories" file. • All taxable income I now know there are only a few things in life really worth putting your stake in the ground for--and • All tax-exempt interest • Half of their Social Security benefits for those things, I am confident enough to stand up for them with all my might. If married add in both persons income, tax-exempt interest, and Glasses have become a fun fashion accessory (albeit a total necessity). They are also a handy prop for Social Security. slipping into a sage-esque alter ego, should the need arise. Next compare this to the amount in the chart below, if the amount is I no longer feel a strong desire to be the one who is right. Married Filing Separately and I've let go of "balance." It really doesn't exist. Instead, there is a willingness to let go of what doesn't did not live with their spouse at any time during the year matter for the sake of the things that do and doing them fully. Notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage… Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars. Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. It is always better to be safe than sorry. (And better paranoid than dead.) Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. Don’t Do This!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. As soon as you get into your car, lock the doors and leave.

Tax Teasers

A man admitted he lied on his income-tax return - he listed himself as the head of the household! Life is one dodge after another - cars, taxes, and responsibilities. The way the cost of living and taxes are today, you might as well marry for love. The average man now lives thirty-one years longer than he did in 1850. He has to in order to get his taxes paid. Benjamin Franklin had an axiom, "A penny saved is a penny earned." But that was before the sales tax was invented. The reward for saving money is being able to pay our taxes without borrowing. Our beloved country has made remarkable progress. Now politicians have arranged to spend taxes before they collect them. A political promise today means another tax tomorrow. We may need tax reform, but it seems we need a lot of spending reform too.

The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do! If someone is in the car with a gun to your head do not drive off. Repeat: do not drive off! Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

Aunt Hattie's "Hurry-Up" Recipes

Household Hints Static electricity. To discharge static electricity from your body, touch something grounded, such as a water faucet. Prevent containers of water from building bacteria. Throw a silver coin in it. Even a tub of water for horses will not have bacteria in it if a half-dollar silver coin is in it also. Saves a lot of cleaning! Remove stuck wax from candle holders. If they're metal or glass put them in the freezer and the wax will pop out. Or you can place them in a sink with hot tap water and the wax will soften and you can wipe it out. Remove wrinkles in pants. Here's a quick fix. Toss your wrinkled pants into the dryer along with a clean, wet sock and a sheet of fabric softener. About five minutes on low heat ought to get the kinks out. Books. Do not place them tight against wall; leave small gap for air to circulate. If pages are torn, smear lightly with white of an egg, leave book open to dry. Organize all those wires behind your entertainment center. Use a coiled telephone cord! The cords are inexpensive and come in various lengths and colors. Just cut off the ends and wrap the coils around the wires. Hanging pictures. Heat the nail with a flame before driving it into the wall. You won't crack or chip the plaster. Tablecloths. No matter how much time you spend ironing a tablecloth some wrinkles are always left behind! Just lay the cloth out on the table the night before you need it with a pad or towel underneath and lightly spray it with water. While you sleep, the tablecloth will become smooth! Remove a stubborn sticker. Just put the baby oil on the sticker and let it sit for a while. You'll be able to scrape the sticker right off! Cutting firewood. Wait a few weeks after you cut the tree down to start cutting it up. The leaves will draw water out of the wood, giving you a head start on drying it and making it lighter to transport.

Wash glass jars and plastic food containers and reuse to store leftovers, lunches, and so forth instead of buying new containers, bags, and wrap. Making a cake? If you have an unheated basement that doesn’t freeze, keep your refrigerator and freezer down there. The cooler year-round temperature means the appliances will work less to do their job, saving money on utility bills. An exercise physiologist once helped me calculate that simply by running up and down stairs to fetch and put away my food burns the calorie equivalent of 10-13 pounds each year.

Reuse dishpan water on garden beds. Leave the dishpan under the faucet to catch water whenever you rinse your hands or sponge off a countertop.

Savings: About $50 per year off your energy bills.

To prevent accumulating dirt under your fingernails while you work in the garden, draw your fingernails across a bar of soap and you'll effectively seal the undersides of your nails so dirt can't get beneath them. Then, after you've finished in the garden, use a nailbrush to remove the soap and your nails will be sparkling clean.

Close closet doors to lower the square footage you're heating (and cooling). Shuttering closets along exterior walls also helps to insulate the house.

If you have the kind of blood that attracts mosquitoes like a moth to a flame, then listen up. To keep the pesky blood suckers at bay, place a fabric softener dryer sheet in your pocket. Mosquitoes are repelled by the scent and you'll smell like summer breeze all night!

This could save your life If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you…. Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION! If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car… …kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT! If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig-zag pattern! As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP. It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well-educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. I’ve analyzed almost every well-known dividend-paying stock in America.

When I discovered a secret investment account used by more than 4,000 major banks and several presidents of the U.S.A, I was more than a little shocked at the huge sums invested. Less than 1% of today’s advisors know anything about these special accounts or know how to legally set them up!

Why does Ben Bernanke, previous U.S. Federal Chairman, own 2 of these special accounts which represent the largest percentage of his own personal investment holdings?

5 ways adult children hurt their parents without realizing it

Most people love and appreciate their parents. We don't doubt that. The problem is, parents can't tell this unless you show it by the way you treat them. Sometimes adult children can bring heartache to their parents without realizing what they're doing. Below is a list of five main ways this happens. If you are a parent of adult children, you may recognize some of these. If you're the adult child, you may be in for an awakening. As parents age, their physical needs may change but their need for your love never does. Check to see if you're doing any of these.

1. You don't call them much

Time just flies by, and you realize it's been a month since you last called your parents to check on them or to share what's happening in your life. You may be thinking, well, they can call me anytime they want. There's no question; parents need to call their children, as well. Here's the thing, they don't know your schedule, and they don't want to interrupt you at the wrong time. Or they don't want to trouble you with their problems. And yet, they want you to care. You need to take the initiative and call them, at least some of the time. Even just a short call to see how they are feeling. Ask them what they did that day then share what you are doing. Be sure to include some good news. Too often, the only news shared is the bad. Being in on at least part of your life will bring them more happiness than you can imagine. If they lay on a lot of unwanted advice, just say, "Thanks, Dad, I appreciate your concern. I was just thinking about you and wanted to know how you're doing." Don't forget to say, "I love you." That's music to their hearts.

2. You ask them for money

Some kids only call when they need money. Don't do that. In fact, don't ask them for money at all. You're an adult and capable of providing for yourself and family. Your parents have worked hard for what they have, and they deserve to keep it for their needs. As their lives wind down they have no idea what expenses lie ahead. They need that retirement nest egg for the unknown. It's comforting to them to have that security. We know some children who've bled their parents dry, and then when the day came and the parents needed the money to live on it was gone. That's not fair. Don't ask your parents for money. If you owe them for some you've already "borrowed," pay it back as soon as you can. Lovingly help them protect what's theirs. They need to be able to enjoy it in their later years.

3. You forget their birthdays

Parents love to be remembered on their special day. It doesn't have to be a fancy celebration, just a remembrance. You know how you feel when you receive a gift from them. They aren't much different. They like it, too. Find out the things they enjoy. A young couple we know gives their parents a gift card to their favorite restaurant, and they thoroughly enjoy it. If you don't have the money for a gift, you surely have the money for a card. Receiving a card in the mail from an out-of-town child brightens any parent's day. A phone call is great, too. If you live nearby, drop by with a hug and good wishes. Let them know you're thinking of them, and wish them a happy birthday. You might even add, "I'm sure glad you were born. I love you, Mom." Some children invite the family over to celebrate a special birthday. Turning 70 is a lot more fun when you're surrounded by those you love.

4. You don't offer them your help

You may be thinking, hey, I told Dad to let me know if there's anything I can do for him, but he hasn't told me of anything. He's probably hesitating because he thinks you're too busy, or he's afraid you didn't really mean it. How about suggesting something to him? Look around and see the needs. Older people are advised to stay off ladders because their balance is impaired, and it's too risky. How about offering to come over, climb that ladder and clean out their rain gutters. A friend's son recently did that for his parents, and they were extremely grateful for the help. A little help from you will go a long way in helping your parents feel loved.

5. You don't include them in your family events

They don't need to be included in everything but for the main events, invite them. They want to be part of special occasions, such as holiday dinners, a baptism, a concert your child is in, weddings or a vacation. Let them enjoy being with you and your family when it fits. Sometimes just an invitation to Sunday dinner at your house will brighten their day. If they invite you and your family over for dinner, accept the invitation and show up. Is this what you want? Look at how you are treating your parents and ask yourself if this is the way you want your children to treat you when they're grown. They are learning how by watching the way you treat your parents. It's a lesson they won't forget. If you're not measuring up, it's not too late. You can make a change this very day. Begin by picking up the phone and calling your parents right now.

Happy Birthday Charlene Taylor

Local Boy Scouts #106 offer Community Service at Victorian Square Assisted Living Boy Scout Troop #106 of Rockwood continues to earn their merit badges and ranks for the Scouts and for Tennessee Scholars to enhance college and military aspirations by doing Community Service, fund raising and attending camps to enhance their skills for a potential future in college via Tennessee Scholars and or the military. Once again these Scouts have remembered Victorian Square and have cleaned and repainted Victorian Square’s front yard garden trellis's which were in dire need. This is in preparation for the Scouts to build two benches to set under the trellises for the residents to have a more pleasant outdoor experience with shading vines at the trellises to provide a beautiful social area for the residents, families and visitors. Troop Leader Ron Kilpatrick has been very serious about mentoring these young men in the responsibilities of not only a Boy Scout but as an active youth member of our community. Thank you Ron for your dedication and commitment. As the saying goes, “it takes a village to raise a child.”

God is with you in your daily walk of life. He is ever with you in trouble and strife. Pray daily for God to guide through and always remember that God is watching you. God is with you and knows each mistake made. He is willing to forgive if in your heart Him you take. He is loving, caring, and brought salvation to all and God is with you if on Him now you call. Your heart is broken when a loved one passes on you have peace when you know Jesus came and took them home.

Please place your hand upon your chest and count your heart-beats, each one of them is counting your life here on earth. We can’t get these get any of those beats back, and how we spend that precious time gets us closer to God and heaven or closer to satan and hell. Our wonderful God and savior will not make any of us obey and stay in His will. He gives each one of us time to make our choice. Please check your heart and mind, Which way are you going? Yes it’s your choice- be careful deciding

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ and not by the will of men, preached the grace of God, Christ crucified, many times over again. He suffered persecution and stripes, was oft times thrown in jail. But, God was with the apostle Paul, and with God, he could not fail. Paul neither labored nor run in vain, holding forth the Word of Life. For the things that counted to Paul for gain, he counted a loss for Christ. By the Holy Spirit Paul penned down many rules for our Christian life. For us to follow in Paul's footsteps would bring honor to Jesus Christ. Yes, Paul was truly a man of God we'd all have to agree. If I could pattern my life after such a good Christian, You'd surely see Paul in me.

Whatever we do, whatever we say, wherever we go, there is a nail-scared hand in Heaven writing it all down. At judgment, everything bad and good we have done here on earth we will answer for. Now if we have repented of the bad, Jesus has forgiven us and has put it under his precious blood and won’t hold it against us; but, if we refuse to be convicted unto repentance and die in our sins, eternity in hell awaits us. Are you ready for judgment day?

20 Signs You’re Doing Better Than You Think You Are #1. You paid the bills this month, and maybe even had extra to spend on non-necessities. It doesn’t matter how much you belabored the checks as they went out, the point is that they did, and you figured it out regardless. #2. You question yourself. You doubt your life. You feel miserable some days. This means you’re still open to growth. This means you can be objective and self-aware. The best people go home at the end of the day and think: “or… maybe there’s another way.” #3. You have a job. For however many hours, at whatever rate, you are earning money that helps you eat something, sleep on something, wear something every day. It’s not failure if it doesn’t look the way you thought it would – you’re valuing your independence and taking responsibility for yourself. #4. You have time to do something you enjoy. Even if “what you enjoy” is sitting on the couch and ordering dinner and watching Netflix. #5. You are not worried about where your next meal is coming from. There’s food in the fridge or pantry, and you have enough to actually pick and choose what you want to eat. #6. You can eat because you enjoy it. It’s not a matter of sheer survival. #7. You have one or two truly close friends. People worry about the quantity but eventually tend to realize the number of people you can claim to be in your tribe has no bearing on how much you feel intimacy, acceptance, community, or joy. At the end of the day, all we really want are a few close people who know us (and love us) no matter what. #8. You could afford a subway ride, cup of coffee, or the gas in your car this morning. The smallest conveniences (and oftentimes, necessities) are not variables for you. #9. You’re not the same person you were a year ago. You’re learning, and evolving, and can identify the ways in which you’ve changed for better and worse. #10. You have the time and means to do things beyond the bare minimum. You’ve maybe been to a concert in the last few years, you buy books for yourself, you could take a day trip to a neighboring city if you wanted – you don’t have to work all hours of the day to survive. #11. You have a selection of clothing at your disposal. You aren’t worried about having a hat or gloves in a blizzard, you have cool clothes for the summer and something to wear to a wedding. You not only can shield and decorate your body, but can do so appropriately for a variety of circumstances. #12. You can sense what isn’t right in your life. The first and most crucial step is simply being aware. Being able to communicate to yourself: “something is not right, even though I am not yet sure what would feel better.” #13. If you could talk to your younger self, you would be able so say: “We did it, we made it out, we survived that terrible thing.” So often people carry their past traumas into their present lives, and if you want any proof that we carry who we were in who we are, all you need to do is see how you respond to your inner child hearing, you’re going to be okay, from the person they became. #14. You have a space of your own. It doesn’t even have to be a home or apartment (but that’s great if it is). All you need is a room, a corner, a desk, where you can create or rest at your discretion; where you govern who gets to be part of your weird little world, and to what capacity. It’s one of the few controls we can actually exert. #15. You’ve lost relationships. More important than the fact that you’ve simply had them in the first place is that you or your former partner chose not to settle. You opened yourself to the possibility of something else being out there. #16. You’re interested in something. Whether it’s now how to live a happier life, maintain better relationships, reading or movies or society or the axis on which the world spins, something intrigues you to explore it. #17. You know how to take care of yourself. You know how many hours of sleep you need to feel okay the next day, who to turn to when you’re heartbroken, what you have fun doing, what to do when you don’t feel well, etc. #18. You’re working toward a goal. Even if you’re exhausted and it feels miles away, you have a dream for yourself, however vague and malleable. #19. But you’re not uncompromisingly set on anything for your future. Some of the happiest and best adjusted people are the ones who can make any situation an ideal, who are too immersed in the moment to intricately plan and decidedly commit to any one specific outcome. #20. You’ve been through some crap. You can look at challenges you currently face and compare them to ones you thought you’d never get over. You can reassure yourself through your own experience. Life did not get easier, you got smarter.

Al Unser Jr calls the police, and says, "They stole my dashboard, they stole my steering wheel, they stole my brake pedal, Heck, they even stole my gas pedal..." Then, before the cops can ask where he is, he says, "Hey, never mind, I'm in the back seat." Jimmie Johnson was just sitting in the Drivers Lounge chatting with Dale Earnhardt Jr, drinking his Diet Mountain Dew and minding his own business when all of a sudden Kyle Busch comes in and WHACK!! knocks him off the stool and onto the floor. Rowdy Busch says, "That was a karate chop from Korea." Superman thinks "GEEZ, what the heck has gotten into Kyle" but he gets back up on the stool and starts drinking again when all of a sudden WHACK!! Kyle knocks him down AGAIN, and says, "That was a judo chop from Japan." So the "Six Time Champ" has had enough of this... He gets up, brushes himself off and quietly leaves. Jimmie is gone for about an hour when he returns. Without saying a word, he walks up behind Kyle Busch and Wham! Knocks the daylights out of Little Busch, leaving him out cold! The Champ looks at Dale Earnhardt Jr and says, "When he comes to, tell him that's 'Crowbar from Lowe's'."

Natural Remedies: Stomach Ache

A sour stomach is no fun—Check out our natural remedies for soothing your stomach ache, and tips for how to avoid them! • Start to address stomach problems by eliminating alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco. • Drink chamomile, ginger, and peppermint teas. • Suck on a raw lemon. • Eat yogurt with live cultures to help restore balance to the stomach. Chose unsweetened or vanilla-flavored varieties. • Add ginger to your diet. Ginger syrup can be added to hot or cold beverages. • Powdered carob, mixed with yogurt or applesauce, can bring relief from indigestion. • Avoid late-night snacks. The peak time for acid secretion in your stomach is in the middle of the night. You can make an acid stomach worse if you eat a late night snack, and will find yourself waking up with a stomachache. • If a stomach ache is chronic and not associated with other symptoms, such as diarrhea, vomiting or weight loss, the most common underlying cause is anxiety. (But don't worry! Check out our related link above for Natural Remedies for Stress and Anxiety.) • Always remember, if your stomach ache persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms, it is time to see your doctor.

Keep ice cream from becoming ice crust. – Position a piece of wax paper over the top of the container before you put the lid on it. This will form a better seal (like the one you peeled off when you first opened the carton) and keep out the ice crystals.

Rockwood Memories By: Ray Collet

Hello Readers, I recently received an e-mail from Chester Taylor (Class of 1960), about the" Black Hollow Gang". Since most of us remember the area and the residents, I thought it would be nice to share it with you. Chester wrote," Ray, I thought I would send you a story to help fill in your time. This is a true story, only the names have been changed to protect the innocent. This is the story of an adventure of a bunch of boys from Black Hollow in Rockwood. I am sure there were guys from different parts that did the same things we did, because this place was well known all over town." "At the end of Strang Street, where it dead ends into Furnace Avenue, there was a great swimming hole. The hole was formed by running out of a large culvert that went under part of the old furnace yards. It ran from the point near the end of Strang Street to a point near the railroad trestle where Coal Bank Hollow begins. It was used to drain the water out of the hollow. This is the beginning of Black Creek." "Where the water ran off the end of the cement that formed the culvert, it had washed out a pretty good sized hole in the ground. I can remember spending many enjoyable times in the swimming hole and making trips through the culvert." You have to remember how poor everyone was back then. None of us could afford a flashlight and it was so dark in that place that you could stick out your finger and when you pulled your finger back, it would leave a hole in the dark. Anyway, the only way to make it through the place without falling in one of the many big holes along the floor, was to keep your back against the wall and feel your way along, by sliding your foot along out in front of you feeling for the holes. when the guy leading the way would find one of the holes, he would pass the word back to the ones behind him. Each one had to feel to see how wide the hole was so he could step across. And they were so full of water, and no one knew just how deep they were. "There is no telling what lived in that place. I would not want to go through it today with a floodlight and a gun!! However, at that the time, we did it a lot and did not think much about it. "I remember one time, a bunch of us were nearing the end of the culvert and someone touched the neck of the guy in front of him and Bats!!!! I don't remember how many of us there was that day, but I can tell you this, everyone of us was trying not to be the last one out of there. I remember someone stepping on my back and I had a lot of black and blue places on me for a few days. I can say I was not the only one wet, muddy, bleeding, and cussing, (and I still say I heard someone yell "HELP"!!!. I think I can still feel the bat's teeth all over me. Thinking back on it today, I can laugh about it, but there was not anything funny about it at the time. I think I still get an awful desire to look over my shoulder when I come out into the light from some dark place. Just another summer day in good ole Rockwood...Chester Taylor" Thanks Chuck for sharing that story. I know or heard that we Wampus Cats roaming around in Black Hollow and Clymersville. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of them didn't live in the culvert you spoke about. I am glad you didn't name any of the names, but I can just picture you, Joe Boyd, Tommy and Johnny Harwood, Thomas Wicks, and a few others going through the culvert. I remember going next door to the Monday's family house when I was seven or eight years old and listening to the radio. Larry, "Dody" and Bill Monday loved to listen to "The Shadow", and "Inner Sanctum", we called it, "The Screaking Door". The programs usually went off around 9 pm, but in the wintertime it was pitch black outside with no streetlights. Although our house was next door, they would walk home with me to protect me from Wampus Cats.. It is strange, we could always hear them but never did see one. They are probably extinct now as "Snipes" in "Snipe Hunting" I am on facebook and would certainly welcome you as a friend and would love to hear your Rockwood Memories. My email address is RCOL110479@aol.com if anyone has a story to share or if anyone is interested in my book, ROCKWOOD MEMORIES Vol. 2..Sorry Vol. 1 has long been sold out. They are ten bucks and can be mailed to you if you include $2 for shipping.

The Five Second Rule

Admit it: At some point in your life you dropped food onto the floor, picked it up, dusted it off, and ate it. And if we had to make a guess, we’d say that you probably didn’t get sick from it. But while you most likely won’t get sick if you decide to eat something off of the floor, we wouldn’t exactly advise doing so. As National Geographic has pointed out, the “five second rule” — legendary on the playground, this rule suggests that food is safe to eat as long as it spends no more than five seconds on the floor — is basically bunk: once something hits the floor it starts picking up bacteria right away. However, some foods attract more bacteria than others. Foods that are drier, like cookies, crackers, and toast, will pick up fewer bacteria, and are generally okay to eat off of the floor. But stickier foods, like the ones below, are veritable bacteria magnets. We’re not saying that eating fallen food will make you sick every time, but these foods, once they’ve made contact with the floor, will be the definition of dirty. Meat Piece of steak fall off the fork as you’re bringing it to your mouth? Toss it. Slice of turkey fall out the back of your sandwich? Unclean. Wet foods pick up a lot more bacteria than dry foods. Candy Unwrapped candy is sticky; candy that you’ve been sucking on for a couple minutes is even stickier. It will pick up all the bacteria, dirt, sand, and hair that it’s exposed to. Cheese Ever place a slice of American cheese on a paper plate? For some reason, it’s almost impossible to peel away. Clinging to a paper plate is one thing; adhering to a linoleum floor is another. Eggs That stray piece of scrambled egg that fell off your fork shouldn’t find its way back into your mouth. Eggs are cheap; let it go. Popcorn While popcorn may seem dry, in reality the bulk of the popcorn we eat is coated with something buttery, greasy, and sticky. If popcorn falls onto your lap, it’s probably okay; if it falls into the crack next to your movie theater seat, it’s time to say goodbye.

Four easy ways to beat chocolate cravings 1. Take a 15 minute walk

A new study led by researchers at the University of Innsbruck in Austria found just 15 minutes of exercise can keep you from indulging. The test involved 47 people, described as “overweight, sugary snack consumers.” Each person was used to eating at least 3.5 ounces of chocolate or other sweets every day, so they were asked to avoid any treats for three days before the experiment to heighten their cravings. Some then took a brisk 15-minute walk on a treadmill, while others sat quietly for 15 minutes. Afterwards, the researchers tried to heighten their chocolate cravings even more. Both groups took a mental test designed to boost their level of stress, which often makes people turn to high-calorie food. Both groups also were presented with a delicious selection of sweets, with the instructions to unwrap one snack of their choice and handle it for 30 seconds, but not actually eat it. It turned out the participants who took the brisk 15-minute walk had lower cravings for treats than those who stayed inactive. And even though stress and the simple act of being around sweets can trigger our desire to eat, the exercise also seemed to counteract those urges. The results are based on questionnaires measuring the participants’ cravings for sugary snacks at various stages of the experiment and other data. These cravings come on us quickly and if we can distract ourselves, they often go away within 15 minutes. That’s why this study, and the duration of the walk, makes sense. It’s all about swapping out an activity.

2. Eat chocolate, but smarter

Sometimes, managing cravings does involve food, but in a calorie-controlled way. Aim for a snack that has 50-100 calories and satisfies, while helping you avoid grabbing a giant candy bar. Here are some suggestions: •Try a small skim milk latte or cappuccino dusted with cocoa or a teaspoon of hot cocoa mix in a black coffee •Two or three chocolate dipped strawberries give a hint of chocolate, with a boost of fruit •Enjoy two or three chocolate Kisses, eaten slowly. “Choose your portion control — the serving size of nine on the package doesn’t have to be your serving size,” Fernstrom advised.

3. Incorporate chocolate in other ways

Make a hot cocoa with hot non-fat milk instead of water. Milk’s protein will keep you feeling full and satisfied longer than a piece of chocolate would. Combine some dark chocolate chips with unsalted nuts and dried fruit. This crunchy, chewy, decadent trio will add protein and healthy fat to the mix to satisfy and squash your cravings while the chocolate will be decadently delish without being excessive. Add a spoon or two of cocoa to plain Greek yogurt. The chocolate flavor may satisfy your craving while the yogurt will provide lots of protein to squelch hunger.

4. Use mindful distraction

You want to break the immediacy of acting impulsively on your chocolate craving in an uncontrolled way. Call a friend to catch up for 10 minutes to distract yourself from thoughts of food. Do some stretching at your desk if you don’t have time for a walk. Clean out a drawer — it keeps your hands busy with a productive activity that takes a few minutes.

Is this cheating? North Korea had a traveling, hired fan base to support their matches at the 2010 soccer World Cup. There’s no doubt that North Korea’s wacky way of doing things is met with raised eyebrows across the world, but this story pretty much takes the cake. After a little bit of digging, it turns out that the group of supporters following the North Korean soccer team had actually been hand-picked by the government. Even crazier is that another group of fans following the team turned out to be Chinese! A reporter was told by one North Korean fan that they had been chosen by their government to travel and support the team. The fans that turned out to be Chinese revealed that they had obtained tickets through a Chinese sports PR agency that was authorized to sell part of the North Koreans allocated tickets, as North Koreans aren’t allowed to travel. They were dubbed the ‘fans volunteer army’ and sang the national anthem loudly and cheered when instructed to do so by a conductor type figure. The North Koreans are infamous for their unconventional way of life, many believing they are incredibly oppressed under the former leadership of Kim Jong-il and current leadership of Kim Jong-un. Back home in North Korea, the matches were only transmitted to the nation when their leader thought it was fit to do so.

The Lightning Bugs are Coming! Mark your calendars, nature lovers! Officials for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park have announced the dates for the annual synchronous firefly viewing event in Elkmont, which will take place June 2-9. Operated through www.recreation.gov, an online ticketing system will again provide visitors with guaranteed parking passes for Sugarlands Visitor Center where ticket-holders will park for reserved shuttle service to Elkmont. According to a press release issued by the park, the parking pass covers a maximum of six people in a single-passenger vehicle (less than 19 feet in length). Four passes for oversize vehicles, like a mini bus (19 to 30 feet in length and up to 24 persons), will also be available. Each reservation costs $1.50. Parking passes are non-refundable, non-transferable, and good only for the date issued. There is a limit of one parking pass per household per season. Each reservation through www.recreation.gov will receive an e-mail confirmation and specific information about the event. The shuttle buses, which are provided in partnership with the city of Gatlinburg, will pick up visitors from the Sugarlands Visitor Center RV/bus parking area beginning at 7 p.m. The cost is $1 round trip per person, as in previous years, and collected when boarding the shuttle. The press release states that “every year in late May or early June, thousands of visitors gather near the popular Elkmont Campground to observe the naturally occurring phenomenon of Photinus carolinus, a firefly species that flashes synchronously. Access to the viewing area during the eight days of predicted peak activity is provided through a shuttle service beginning at Sugarlands Visitor Center. All visitors wishing to view the synchronous fireflies at Elkmont must have a parking pass.” Parking passes will go on sale online at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 30. The park will hold back 85 passes for each day to accommodate individuals who did not learn of the need to pre-purchase tickets. These 85 passes will go on sale online at 10 a.m. the day before the event and will be available until 3:30 p.m. on the day of the event or until all passes are reserved. Passes can be purchased at www.recreation.gov. Parking passes may also be obtained by calling 877-444-6777, but park officials strongly encourage the use of the online process because it provides more information to visitors about what to expect when they arrive at the park. The online process is also faster which enables a better chance to secure a pass. The $1.50 reservation fee covers the cost of processing the request for the passes. The park will not receive any revenue from the parking reservations or the shuttle tickets. For more info on the event and the synchronous fireflies, visit the park website at www.nps.gov/grsm/learn/nature/fireflies.htm.

How did we ever survive?

My mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread butter on bread on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e. Coli. Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake or at the beach instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then. We all took Phys Ed ..... And risked permanent injury with a pair of PF Flyers instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors that cost as much as a small car. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now. We got the paddle for doing something wrong at school, they used to call it discipline yet we all grew up to accept the rules and to honor & respect those older than us. We had 40 kids in our class and we all learned to read and write, do math and spell almost all the words needed to write a grammatically correct letter. Staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention we wish we hadn’t got. I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself. I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or Netflix. We weren't!! Oh yeah ... And where was the antibiotics and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? Could I have been killed! We played “King of the Hill” on piles of gravel left on vacant building sites and when we got hurt, mom pulled out the bottle of iodine and then we got our backside spanked. Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10 day dose of antibiotics and then mom calls the lawyer to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat. To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that? We never needed to get into group therapy and/or anger management classes. We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?

The Hospital Window

The Bizarre Truth Behind Wedding Traditions

Weddings can be a fun chance to celebrate with family and friends, but oftentimes for the bride, groom Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. and bridal party, that just isn't the case. With so many potential mishaps and missed details, weddings One man was allowed to sit up... in his bed for an hour each can get hectic and stressful. Imagine how stressful they would be if we still held onto these superstitions.afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. 1. Ancient Greeks and Romans believed that veils would shield the bride from evil spirits. 2. Engagement rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was once thought to lead The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. “Showing Others The Love of God In You” While there are many verses in scripture that people favor over another, my favorite is undoubtedly 1 JOHN 3:16-18, which reads, “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” Being a Christian (i.e. Like Christ) simply does not revolve around what we say, but the things that we do and the life we strive to live daily. Whereas there are staggering numbers of example where people simple show themselves to be quite the opposite of what they profess in daily life (whatever that thing may be), it’s also found in the Bible. When Jesus Christ spoke to the multitudes about what it takes to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven He explained that their righteousness would have to be above that of the Pharisees (i.e. Actual Religious Judges/Authority Figures). People shouted at the thought because they couldn’t see passed the veneer of legalism that those men displayed. For such reasons they were used often and purposefully in the parables of Jesus. Religion won’t get anyone into Heaven. After all it was Religious people who cried for the execution of Jesus Christ, and that His’ innocent blood be on not only their hands, but the hands of their children as well. Frankly, if you live for God people should perceive in without you verbally stating it. You should do unto others as you’d have them do unto you. I not only have an abundance of empathy for waiters and waitresses, but for the people who clean the rooms at hotels, as I have done that in the past, and know how back-breaking it is. I also know that you can leave a tip behind, that they’ll really appreciate it. I actually go the extra obsessive mile & strip the bed for them and everything, just cause. I’ve found myself folding a shirt properly that others have messed up in a store, cause I also worked in clothing retail for years. Above all else I can’t help but think, “How can you be for someone, and your actions not show it?” Good intentions in and of themselves have never stopped a war, have never built a church, have never cured an illness, have never done anything. People of faith need to step out, and quit using religion as an excuse not to do anything. They need to be involved. I believe they need to vote. I mean, I always vote. I look at it that a soldier somewhere died so that I could stand up and do that, and it I should appreciate the rights they fought so hard for, rather than take them for granted. I feel the same way about protesting, and that it’s a systemic problem when people of faith use a broken and twisted logic as an excuse not to do anything. Clearly, there is a time and place for everything. Your and my outward actions should be indicative auto who we really are inside. Integrity is not what you do in public where everyone can see you. It’s what you do when others aren’t watching, but there will be bleed over, and God will honor those things. At Benchmark Church we’re very community minded, and family minded. That’s not, nor should it be exclusive to us. It’d be a sad world if it were. Just as faith without works are dead, love without showing the signs of it isn’t really love at all.

Never Feed Your Cat These 6 Human Foods Garlic and Onions Garlic and onions contain chemicals that can damage red blood cells in cats and dogs. Cooking these foods does not reduce their potential toxicity, because they contain organosulfoxides. Make sure you carefully read food labels; fresh, cooked and/or powdered garlic and/or onions can be dangerous for pets even in small doses. Uncooked Eggs Cats need significantly more protein than dogs because of species differences in protein metabolism. However, raw eggs may expose them to salmonella or lead to an inflamed pancreas, known as pancreatitis. It's safe to serve your kitty cooked eggs — but only on occasion and only in small amounts. Bones Because bones can splinter, they can cause a cat to choke as well as block the intestinal tract. If a bone becomes an intestinal obstruction, it is a true emergency that may require surgery. Fat Trimmings Although cats need certain essential amino acids found only in meat, feeding fat trimmings is not a safe way to try to provide them. Feeding your feline such fat can lead to gastrointestinal upset and even pancreatitis. Caffeinated Drinks Caffeine can cause problems such as an increased heart rate and agitation in your kitty. So keep your cat away from coffee, soda and tea, as well as chocolate — especially bitter chocolate. Milk Although some cats love to lap milk, they can't always digest it without stomach upset. That's because a cat's digestive tract becomes somewhat lactose intolerant once a cat reaches adulthood. Giving your cat milk may make him sick and could contribute to obesity.

Legless Lizards In nature, some things aren’t what they seem. It would be perfectly understandable for you to see a legless lizard and believe it to be a snake. Measuring up to an incredible four feet, the European legless lizard has considerable biting power and hunting skills that allow them to bring down a wide range of prey. Despite the lack of legs, lizard traits such as longitudinal stripes, ear openings behind the eyes and a noticeably flattened head remain. European legless lizards feed extensively on snails, and often wipe their nose on the ground to rid themselves of slime after feeding.

Pet’s Page Fish Aren’t So Dumb After All We tend to think of fish, particularly goldfish, as unintelligent. There’s a common myth that goldfish only have a memory span of about three seconds, making every day in their bowl an exciting new adventure. Well, some fish have been observed using tools, which is a standard sign of intelligence. As for the memory myth, a study conducted in Australia could finally put it to rest. The study found that fish actually have a fairly long memory span. They trained fish to remember the location of food and other objects, and fish in a community that cooperate with one another can recall a particularly uncooperative fish and will no longer work with that fish on future fish activities. There’s a reason fish are always in schools.

Am I a Bad Pet Owner If I Leave My Dog Alone all Day?

When people talk about getting a dog, the first thing you need to consider how much time you have available to spend with the dog. It’s important to remember that dogs are social animals. There’s a reason we call them our best friends: They are wired to spend time with us, watch us and help us. It’s hard for dogs to become great at their job of companion if they don’t spend time in our company. That’s not to say you shouldn’t get a dog if you work — far from it. We all need a friendly face to come home to at the end of the day. A dog is a friend who is always there to greet you, play with you and exercise you. But not many of us can spend all day with our dogs, although it would be a great world if we could. We have work, school, family, friends and commitments in our lives. Here’s some tips on how you can make your dog’s life better— even when you’re not home. House Training First, teach your dog that being home alone is okay. Every dog should be able to stay on his own all day without falling apart emotionally or becoming destructive. From the time you first get him, whether he’s a puppy or an adult, practice leaving him alone. Start with just a minute or two and gradually extend the length of time as you become comfortable with his behavior while you’re out of sight. He can be in his crate, in a special dog room or dog run or, once you’re sure he’s trustworthy, on his own in the house. Watch for potty accidents, too, as these will tell you how long your dog can be left without needing to go outside. Don’t re-enter the room if he’s crying, whining, howling or barking. Wait until he’s quiet, then go in and praise him in a brief, matter-of-fact tone of voice. You want him to think that being on his own is normal and safe. Give him a treat when you leave but not when you return. Make sure he has constructive ways to occupy his time when you’re not around. Stuff a Kong toy with enough goodies to keep him busy for hours. Fill a puzzle toy with his daily ration of kibble so he has to work for his meals. Hide treats or favorite toys around the house for him to find while you’re gone. But a word of caution: Never leave your dog unsupervised with a toy that could be chewed apart and swallowed. Before leaving your dog alone, make sure any toys in the environment are indestructible. Leave the radio tuned to a calming classical station or a talk radio show. Choose the station carefully. You don’t want to come home to a dog who is amped up from listening to people shout at each other all day.
