S AM B O’S R E S TAU R A N T Built in the late 1960s, this building is one of few, if not the only, Googie Style buildings in Boise. It also has direct associations with the commercial development of the west edge of Boise during the mid-to-late 20th century. Character-defining features include the sawtooth roof profile, full-width curtain wall, and corner location along a busy traffic artery allowing the building to act as its own advertisement.

NOTES

• This is only a mock-up, I intend to be painting this (the • • • •

side ‘warning’ labels might be added digitally) as though the entire box itself is a giant bucket. The background (gray color) is only for illustration purposes of this mock-up. I intend for it to be white or very pale grey-blue color. Each page of this spread represents a different group of color options. They are not intended to all be used together. The main difference is the use of the yellow or the orange colors as the “pop” of color. The child warning label will be on the same surface as all other elements, there will NOT be white behind it. The 30th St. District label is to call out the location as a gateway to the neighborhood. From my research, I

found a few proposed names (SONO, The West End, etc.), but wasn’t sure if there had been final decision. I’m open to taking this out, changing the name, or utilizing it as a personal label for myself. • QR code currently links to my personal website, I want to include a second one or change that one to link to a website with facts about water and how people can conserve and reduce their usage of it for the betterment of our city.

NOTES

• Box to the left is first stage of

painting process to give an idea of how the box can take shape to look like a bucket itself. • Box below is the next stage of painting process through completion. • To the right is a working color palette, subject to change. • Lower right hand corner is reference for overall style.

NOTES

• This mock-up illustrates the front and right sides, front facing Main Street, the right facing Garden Street.

• The label on the right side contains a QR code that takes anyone that scans it to:

ht tps://www.epa.gov/aboutepa/epa-idaho

• All text on the label (aside from the circle/slash

warning) have been added on in Photoshop and can be removed if decided it isn’t appropriate in any way. • I chose not to include the baby falling into the bucket warning messaging and image because I felt it detracted from the message I was trying to convey, thus I left it empty and blank to draw the viewers eye in, leading them to read the CONSERVE text. NOTES

• This mock-up illustrates the back and left sides, facing the Idaho Marine and the other boxes.

• This side is where I brought in similar tone as my other

pieces in my bucket series with paint splashes and splatters. I also outlined some in black and added additional patterns over top to add more whimsy and visual intent. Also, hoping to gain attraction by a wider audience in age range. • The diagonal stripes were inspired by caution tape as an additional tool to visually attract people to the box. • The warning label reflected on the opposite side I left blank in this case. This side is near butt-up against another box and won’t have much visual real estate. I could also just have it white with nothing. Thoughts? JWJ- WPU © 2019 Al l ri g ht s res er ved .

L A S T REVIS IONS

After submission there were some revisions that had to be made due to sizing of the box and making sure all the elements that were important were visible on the finished piece. While revising, I realized I hadn’t given enough thought to the label on the side and I had sort of neglected it. So I took this opportunity to edit the label and got quick re -approval. I’m happier with this version (but as always, thinking about how I could improve upon it).
