About

My name is Justin DeFields. I was born in Michigan, raised in Central Illinois, and am currently an architecture student at the University of NebraskaLincoln. My passion for architecture started early in high school, where I took several civil engineering and architecture classes. I fell in love with the design process, and learning how to use today’s computer-aided-drafting technology to bring my ideas to fruition. Since then, I have worked on many small scale projects for people, from deck designs, to kitchen rennovations, to furniture design.

Through my previous jobs and groups, I learned valuable communication skills and the importance of working efficiently in a team. I worked as a manager for a frozen yogurt company for a year, and was also elected to be the Kitchen manager of my fraternity (ΣΧ) for a semester, both of which I was required to organize labor and plan events effectively. I was also a 3 year captain of my lacrosse team, where my ability to bring everyone together helped us be more successful.

I spent a month of the 2016 Summer on a tree farm outside of Eugene Oregon, where CLT Timber Cabin myself and twelve other students participated in Summer 2016 a design-build course based on cross-laminated-timber construction. We learned about the process of creating CLT and how it is used in buildings today. The cabin is currently being used on the tree farm as a tool to teach visitors about CLT.

Our design revolved around the sustainability of wood construction. We highlighted the natural beauty of the wood material in the CLT by building a system around it to protect it from the elements and controlling the views to the interior. Our facade system represents the fade between the trees and the construction materials we used, becoming more natural in form towards the top of the structure before releasing into the trees around it.

In my design I utilized wood as a construction material, and focused on how CLT Timber Hybrid Building light enters and exists in space. To achieve this I Spring 2016 explored how the building form and organization of program is influenced by the natural light to the site. This project was selected to be submitted for the Timber in the City competition for the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

Apartment Layout Examples For the residential floors, I maximized how far the light penetrates each floor, yet controlled it with facade, which is available for individual units to alter as needed.

Each of the 310 apartment units was designed around a fairly standard layout. The plans below show one of the larger three bedroom apartments, which is very spatious

There would be multiple variations of screens in a randomized fashion along the entire facade to ensure that each room has a unique shading element

Llouvers absorb direct light and allow indirect light to pass through where the solid panels reflect all light away

Several different wood types and finishing techniques were tested and the facade system itself was modeled and tested (above) to find the preferred density and reflectivity of the wood.

This was then applied to all of the residential levels.

In designing a yoga studio, Christian Lopp and I had a large focus on user comfort.

Yoga Studio I measured out the amount of space actually Fall 2015 required for most poses to calculate the size and shape of the studio space. There was also a heavy focus on circulation, as the transfer between classes can be a difficult and frustrating experience.

This concept for an architect’s studio/ dwelling focused in on the natural aspects The Architect’s Studio of the site, using them to soothe the designer, Spring 2016 providing a more comfortable working and home environment. Each of the two views out of the building focus on a different aspect of the site and the form of each also mirrors the natural element.

One of the major benefits of the left most form is that it easily captures and focuses the views and sounds coming from the lake. The curved shape of the wood beams help to focus the soothing sounds of the water into the structure.

The entry way is designed to focus light into the studio, peaking at the summer solstice, to bathe the designer in a pure light from above on a clear day.

I worked with Allie Smith and Kylie Miller on a redesign of Oakdale elementary 21st Century Learning which revolved around creating spaces that Fall 2016 could be used for each of the seven learning styles to better educate students. Largely influenced by the site boundaries, our concept avoids the industrial look that many schools have today, and provides much more flexibilty for teachers.

We learned early on that views and access to nature trigger diffuse thinking, which allows the mind to wander and build new neural connections. Because of this we provided a direct connection to one of the three green spaces for each classroom.

Traditional learning style vs. new learning theory

Perforated metal screen to help control sunlight and visibility to green spaces.

All of our corridors were primarily glass so that as you move through the building you were able to see the activity happening in the green spaces.

The classrooms themselves were designed to either be closed and separate, or opened to create a combined classroom. All of the furniture was modular and designed to be moved around and arranged differently for group work, individual heads down, or traditional learning.

Models

I have a great passion for creating physical models that aid in the understanding of my design. A physical model allows people to see the design through their own view instead of the forced view of a drawing or render, so I make all of my models pull apart to reveal the interior spaces and workings .

Scaled at 3/8” = 1’ and 1” = 20’ respectively.
