From: Justice Research Group Date: January 24, 2022 NEW POLL: Clark County Voters Oppose Death Sentences for People With Severe Mental Illness And Other Impairments
A new poll of likely Clark County voters shows bipartisan opposition to death sentences against the vulnerable groups who bear the brunt of capital punishment, including people with severe mental illness, brain damage, intellectual impairments, and veterans who suffer from PTSD. For example, 62% of Clark County voters, including 52% of Republicans, oppose death against military veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Only 23% of voters support the death penalty in such cases, a gap of 39%. Voters also oppose District Attorney Steve Wolfson seeking death for people with a diagnosed mental illness (59% oppose), serious intellectual impairments (60% oppose, including 52% of Republicans), and traumatic brain injuries (59% oppose). Among the polled categories, the narrowest margin was for youth between the ages of 18 and 21, with a plurality of 46% opposing.
