SPEAKER

Teresa C. Younger

Since 1989, the Harvest Celebration Dinner has been Just Harvest’s signature event, bringing together hundreds of supporters and community leaders to celebrate our victories. Proceeds from the Harvest Celebration Dinner support Just Harvest: A Center for Action Against Hunger, our public policy advocacy arm, and Just Harvest Education Fund, our educational and service arm.

Teresa C. Younger is the President and CEO of the Ms. Foundation for Women. She has been on the frontlines of some of the most important battles for women’s health, safety and economic justice. She is a tireless advocate and well-respected feminist leader. Prior to joining the Ms. Foundation for Women, Younger most recently served as the executive director of the Connecticut General Assembly’s Permanent Commission on the Status of Women, where she was instrumental in campaigns that resulted in state legislation to raise the minimum wage and provide paid sick leave in Connecticut. A noted speaker, advocate and activist, she has been recognized by many organizations for her commitment to women’s health, safety, and economic justice. She was named to the Older Women’s League Hall of Notables and honored by Planned Parenthood Federation of America as a 2015 Dream Keeper, among other honors. Just Harvest and the United Steelworkers are proud to honor Teresa C. Younger with our 2015 George and Jane Becker Memorial Award.

ABOUT THE AUCTION MAKE A DIFFERENCE! The silent auction is your oppurtunity to Make a Difference in the lives of our neighbors who struggle to put food on the table everyday. Your donation will support Just Harvest and our mission to end hunger in our community.

OUR SILENT AUCTION The silent auction will open for bidding at the beginning of the evening and close at 8:30 pm. An announcement will be made to inform bidders when the Silent Auction will close. Each item in the auction has a bid sheet in front of it, and each increase in bid must equal or exceed the “minimum raise” on that sheet to constitute a valid bid. The closing bid, as determined by the auction staff, constitutes the winning bid.

BUY IT NOW Each bid sheet has a “Buy It Now” price listed above the bid section. To purchase an item for this price, take the bid sheet to the auction checkout table and inform the auction staff. “Buy It Now” will cease to be an option on any given item if the bidding surpasses the “Buy It Now” price.

GENERAL INFORMATION Just Harvest has endeavored to catalog and describe items and services correctly, but everything is sold as is. Below are some of our favorite items including tickets to a Pittsburgh Pirates game, a Bed & Breakfast Package at the Omni William Penn, a series of yoga classes, and a lapis necklace.

ACTION AGAI Just Harvest 2015 Highlights

Our tax program and advocacy work was profiled in the Sunday New York Times on March 22, 2015.

FUEL 4 SCHOOL CAMPAIGN Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) is a new element of federal child nutrition policy that allows schools in high-poverty areas to serve free breakfast and lunch to all students. In 2014, the first school year for CEP, 86% of eligible schools in Allegheny County adopted the provision, providing universal access to breakfast and lunch to over 41,000 students. Through our partnership with the Congressional Hunger Center, Just Harvest hosted a resesarch fellow to analyze and build support for further local adoption of CEP. With grassroots support from allies including Southwest PA Food Security Partnership, A+ Schools, Family Support Centers, as well as input from focus groups, principals, and parents, we helped several school districts plan for CEP. BARRIERS TO BENEFITS PROGRESS Our ongoing campaign for sorely-needed improvements to customer service at the PA Department of Human Services (DHS) has gained more ground. At our recommendation DHS has adopted measures to cut down on lost paperwork and unnecessary delays in benefits. At our urging, DHS continues to work to reduce telephone wait times and dropped calls. 10

In early 2015, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey met with Just Harvest and other PA advocates and took our testimony to the Senate floor to oppose federal cuts to food stamps (SNAP).

IMPROVING ACCESS TO FRESH, HEALTHY FOOD ➢ Our leadership within the Pittsburgh Food Policy Council helped that coalition expand its visibility, hire its first staff members, and advance its working relationships with city and county government. The Council formed in 2009 to improve Pittsburgh’s food system. ➢ We are partnering with the Allegheny County Health Department to implement Fresh Corners, an exciting healthy corner store initiative to expand access to fresh fruits and vegetables for people living in food deserts. ➢ Our Fresh Access program, which enables people to use food stamps at farmers markets, expanded to 15 area markets and now offers Food Bucks, an incentive to help make nutritious, farm-fresh goods more affordable to food stamp shoppers.

We updated a new logo that emphasizes action and progress, builds on our history, and raised our public visibility.

ADVANCING CITY’S AGENDA ON FOOD & HUNGER Just Harvest joined fellow anti-hunger and food policy advocates in forging a powerful partnership with the City of Pittsburgh, reaping important results: ➢ The City expanded and promoted its summer food program for children as part of a National League of Cities initiative and launched a new afterschool meals program at its recreation centers. ➢ All seven Citiparks farmers markets now accept food stamps and other electronic transactions through Just Harvest’s Fresh Access program. ➢ City zoning changes will make it easier for residents to raise their own chickens, bees, and garden crops, thanks to leadership from Grow Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Food Policy Council. PA ELIMINATES FOOD STAMP ASSET TEST Just Harvest along with our fellow anti-hunger advocates in Pennsylvania pushed Governor Tom Wolf to end the state’s resource test for food stamp applicants, which had unfairly blocked tens of thousands of households in need from receiving food stamps since being put in place by former Gov. Tom Corbett in 2012.

INST HUNGER ANNE ALTER, FRESH ACCESS SHOPPER

Our Fresh Access program enables shoppers at participating farmers markest to use their food stamps – as well as credit and debit cards – to buy fresh, nutritious, and locally-grown food. Launched in 2013, Fresh Access now operates at 15 area markets.

“It is hard to find the words to say just how much it meant to me to be able to shop at the farmers market. It was so wonderful to have access to truly fresh food, to interact with the farmers, and to know that the food I was buying was local. This kind of gathering feels like a small village. I feel included and less on the financial outskirts of society. It was very hard emotionally to use my ACCESS card in such a public place where I often run into people I know. Fortunately, you and staff always treated me with respect, and the vendors seemed to be nonjudgmental, and happy to have my business. I predict that other people will find, as I have, that the more easy access there is to fresh produce, the more we will include good food in our diets.” -- Anne Alter

SNAPSHOTS O Unfiltered and unedited, five area residents document their personal experiences of poverty in a new Just Harvest exhibit of photographs that show the impact of poverty in our community. Inspired by Drexel University’s Witnesses to Hunger, this is a project that empowers those who know firsthand what it means to face poverty – people who are too often left out of the policymaking processes that directly impact their lives. Using digital photography, the participants spark dialogue, engage and inform policymakers, and inspire change.

Exhibiting their photographs to the public is only the first step in this dialogue. They are using these photographs and their life experiences to advocate for change in their own communities. They are living testimony of the need for powerful public policies at all levels of government to bring an end to hunger and poverty. The entire exhibit is now open to the public at Repair the World during their regular hours, M-F 10am-5pm through Friday, November 6, 2015. Please join us for a closing reception that evening. Repair the World: 6022 Broad Street, East Liberty

Kathy Marty, Brighton Heights: “I have a disability and have difficulty getting up and down my basement stairs because they have no railing. I’m afraid to ask my landlord to fix these problems because he’ll raise the rent and I can barely afford the rent now.” 12

Linda Davis, Swissvale: “There is some scary mold in my basement. I will have a new grandchild in February and I won’t let the baby in my home because I’m afraid the mold will make it sick.”

OF POVERTY Brian Cura, Pittsburgh: “I wake up every morning at the crack of dawn but I have no place to go. People put me down for not having a job but I can’t find a job.”

Luvenia Jones, Fayette: “I grew up in the Hill District and, at the time, it was beautiful. Now, buildings have been abandoned.”

Vickie Stevenson, Allison Park: “Eviction is a nightmare. They treat people’s belongings like they were trash.”
