Isle of Wight ‘Royals & Rails’
With elegant resort towns, spotless beaches, old-fashioned charm and miles of unspoilt coastline, the Isle of Wight is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing few days away. A firm favourite of Queen Victoria in the 19th century, the island is one of the UK’s most popular destinations and it’s easy to see why. On this fantastic break we enjoy the island’s peace, tranquility and natural beauty as well as a nostalgic journey on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and a visit to fascinating Osborne House.
HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

We have the chance to explore Queen Victoria’s one-time residence on the island, Osborne House. Built as a holiday home and rural retreat in the late 1840s, the Italianate palace reflects Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s tastes and boasts spectacular views across the Solent. It is no wonder that Victoria herself once said, ‘it’s impossible to imagine a prettier spot.’ Here we take an intimate glimpse of royal family life as we wander through the magnificent Royal Apartments as well as the walled gardens and grounds where we find the charming Swiss Cottage, used by the royal children to learn household management.
We then head to Cowes, a vibrant and sophisticated resort home to the world-famous regatta that swells the local population each August. Enjoy a stroll along the seafront, browse the boutique shops, or admire many of the town’s ornate buildings which date from Queen Victoria’s time, in the style popularised by Prince Albert.

We loved our 5-day trip to Northumberland. From start to finish everything was very good. We were picked up on time and then transferred to our big coach. The driver Steve was great, friendly, helpful and drove the coach very well. Our hotel in Newcastle was situated overlooking the river Tyne and from our bedroom we could see the Millennium Bridge. Our trips our were so informative and we had a very knowledgeable guide called Tom who informed us about the history of Holy Island etc. Will book with Just Go! Holidays again.

This section of the West Highland Line crosses the 100ft-high Glenfinnan Viaduct used in the Harry Potter film sequences featuring the Hogwarts Express. You don’t need to be a Harry Potter fan to appreciate this journey though, as the scenery in reality beats any cinematography hands down! We disembark in the picturesque port of Mallaig for some free time.

We head to the historic market town of Dingwall to join the Kyle Railway Line, a beautiful journey which has been likened to a symphony in three parts: pastoral, mountain and marine. The 17th-century mansion was home to the 7th Laird of Breckness, who famously unearthed the Neolithic village of Skara Brae in 1850. Inside the house, we discover Neolithic collections and an exhibition showing what life in the house was like in the 1950s. We finish our day at the Stones of Stenness or as they are otherwise known, the Ring of Brodgar. This massive Neolithic henge and stone circle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is truly an amazing sight to behold. Our destination is the dramatic white beach of the Bay of Skaill to discover the stone-built, Neolithic settlement, Skara Brae. Once a thriving village long before the creation of Stonehenge or the Egyptian pyramids, this incredible prehistoric village consists of ten stone structures and is one of
the best-preserved settlements in Western Europe. Originally uncovered by a storm in 1850, it features nine houses and ‘furniture’ made 5,000 years ago, with further items such as a gaming dice and jewellery on display in the visitor centre. Next is another Neolithic treasure, the Stones of Stenness or as they are otherwise known, the Ring of Brodgar. Bundoran (full day)
Bundoran awaits, the most southerly town in County Donegal and a lovely seaside resort which has been delighting visitors for over two centuries. The Blue Flag beach is the perfect place to get some sea air, or why not enjoy some nostalgic entertainment at the traditional amusement arcades? There are plenty of cosy eateries on offer too, along with stunning coastal walks dotted with fairy bridges and a wishing chair.
CAMERA-ALT Dublin (with optional guided tour) (full day) Checking out of our hotel, we travel to Dublin where we spend an afternoon at leisure. There are plenty of historic sites, architectural splendours and iconic monuments to see from the oldest, Dublin Castle, to one of the newest, the Spire of Dublin. Or you may like to experience one of Dublin’s traditional pubs – there are 1,000 lining the city’s cobbled streets! We also have the option to join a locally guided tour of the city before spending the night in our hotel in the Dublin area.
Hidden Heartlands of Ireland
Join us on a journey of discovery through Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, an enchanting region characterised by fairytale forests, trickling streams, towering mountains and a lovely, slower pace of life. Amidst this beauty, we soak up the county’s cultural heritage with visits to one of the country’s most famous monastic sites (dating back to 544!), the oldest whiskey distillery in Ireland and a grand estate which documents powerful stories of the Great Famine. A cruise along the River Shannon, a visit to Galway and the chance to explore Dublin round off this magical escape to the Emerald Isle.
HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS
Clonmacnoise Monastic Site, Strokestown Park & Old Kilbeggan Distillery (full day)
For our first visit we head to the impressive Clonmacnoise Monastic Site, one of the most significant early Christian locations in Europe, where 6th-century ruins still stand proudly on the banks of the River Shannon. Founded by St Ciarán, it became an important seat of learning with scholars flocking from all over Europe to visit and was also closely associated with the kings of Connacht until the 9th century. It’s a fascinating experience to walk amongst the cathedral, two round towers, carved high crosses, nine churches and hundreds of early Christian gravestones to really imagine what has gone before us here, and there’s also an informative visitor centre to learn more.
We continue to Strokestown Park, an atmospheric Anglo-Irish estate consisting of a Palladian-style Georgian house, once home to a renowned military family for over three centuries, as well as lovely gardens and the National Famine Museum. State-of-the-art exhibits, immersive displays, local documents, tragic stories and unique artefacts combine to bring to life a moving part of Ireland’s history while comparing the lives of Strokestown’s aristocratic landlords and their tenants.
Our last stop of the day is the famous Old Kilbeggan Distillery, the country’s oldest licensed distillery, housed in charming buildings. Established in 1757, it’s now one part museum and one part distillery with authentic features on display such as the 19th-century waterwheel, offering the perfect chance to learn all about the traditional Irish whiskey-making process.
Galway (full day)
We visit Galway, a thriving, cosmopolitan city. We enjoy a guided walking tour to discover the landmark spots and also include admission to the Galway City Museum, which celebrates local and national cultural heritage, from prehistoric Galway right through to the present day. Afterwards, there is time to find somewhere for lunch (not included) and to browse the little shops for souvenirs – think cosy Aran sweaters, unique crafts and iconic Claddagh rings!
The Shannon & Knock (full day)
We make our way to the quaint village of Carrick, where we board our cruise on the River Shannon, the longest in Ireland and entwined with ancient folklore. Sit back and relax as we meander along the pretty waterways, admiring the beautiful scenery and ancient sites along its banks. Next stop is Knock, a small village nestled in County Mayo and a popular Christian pilgrimage site thanks to the Knock Shrine, where 15 people witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary, St Joseph and St John the Evangelist in 1879 (their testimonies are a fascinating read). We can find out more in Knock Museum, which covers 140 years of history and features a fantastic model village, or take in the views over the Shannon Estuary, Clonderlaw Bay and Kilkerrin Peninsula.
