FLOWER OF THE MONTH

SIWOD NILTIAK YB TRA

MORNING GLORY A morning glory is a flower with deep symbolism. This meaning can vary depending on the color of the flower as well as from which cultural lens you are viewing the flower. For example, it can not only mean unrequited love or love that is in vain, but it can also represent the mortality of life. There’s significant Chinese folklore surrounding this flower, which indicates that lovers can only meet on one special day of the year. However, you’ll find that the meaning changes more significantly depending on the color of the flower.

Kelly Nishimoto @cutebootylounge | @kellynishimoto www.cutebooty.com

Meet Kelly Nishimoto, mother, creative, designer, and founder of Cute Booty Lounge. I had the pleasure of speaking with Kelly and learning her story (you can listen to our conversation on the Just Begin podcast). Kelly was born and raised in a small town called Roberta, Georgia (population 804) to a Scottish Irish craftsman/chemist/musician father and a Japanese American jewelry designer mother. Even though Kelly grew up in a small town she was surrounded by creativity. “I came from a very creative family. My grandmother and my mother came from Japan. My grandmother was the only one in my family who could sew and my aunt actually owned a marketing company and they would make dog and cat t-shirts. My mom and dad played the guitar, sang, and wrote music. My dad actually built the log cabin we grew up in!” Kelly shared. Fast forward to 2001— Kelly made her way to Miami and created garments from Reynolds Wrap that she used to buy from her local grocery store to create her first pieces such as corsets, ball-room gowns, double breasted jackets, and handbags. It was after this when her designs started to get attention and she was even featured in Miami Herald's “Top Ten Designers to Watch”.

After she started to get more recognition Kelly eventually debuted her first full collection at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Los Angeles, CA in 2005. “I found a business partner at a party ‘I know so crazy’ and I started showing my clothes at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. That was my first real runway collection with a publicist, guests, models, fittings, and it was so exciting and I did that until the market crashed in 2008 and everyone started freaking out including my partner and then I was on my own”.

FACING ADVERSITY AND PUNCHING IT IN THE FACE!

Once we got to this point of the conversation I immediately was inspired. Regardless of the challenges that were placed on Kelly she continued to pursue her passion of fashion design. “My partner pulling out really gave me a new hustle. I had to change my mindset. Like ok he’s gone I’m not going to lay here and die! There is a business here”.

Kelly was looking to make pants that embraced a woman's curves (particularly the booty) but that were still polished enough to wear out & about. Her signature designs are luscious modal fabrics, ruched back seams, scrunch booty pockets, large eyelets, & oversized satin bows. Cute Booty Lounge began to grow recognition and was approached in 2010 by swimwear brand, Beach Bunny, that contracted Kelly to private label her famous pants, "Ruffle Booty" aka "Bunny Booty, bearing the "Beach Bunny" label for their online store & retail. “The owner came to me multiple times and she wanted to add loungewear to the collection and I had so no three or four times and finally she said I’ll pay your wholesale prices. We just want this stuff in our stores. So we did great, we did about a million dollars in over a course of 9 months and made them the biggest collection ever”. It was from here when I learned from Kelly the terrible news that Beach Bunny decided to part ways with Kelly Nishimoto, Inc out of the blue and leave her in financial trouble. This was a very challenging experience for Kelly but she persevered and continued to grow Cute Booty Lounge. She eventually was approached by TLC to co-host the show Something Borrowed, Something New which she was a part of from 2013-2014. However, before giving away all the gems of our conversation I learned so much from her story and I think many other women entrepreneurs will do the same! When it is innate to thing beyond convention, color outside the box, and pave your own path, you are an entrepreneur. I've always questioned what and how can something be better and after many years of treating my business as a full-time side hustle, having experience to align with my ideas and abilities, I left part-time full employment [ ;-) ] to pursue investing in my own business.

Being an entrepreneur opens the door to endless possibility and self worth in your perspective. How do you define success?

When your happiness quotient exceeds any other palpable KPI or metric.

The initial name was Timur Tugberk Events, Interiors, & Media. As I matured, I chose to make my work speak beyond my namesake. I rebranded in 2016 to Designing the District: marrying the name of my hometown, Washington DC (The District ... of Columbia) with my design philosophy approach to creative problem solving, and my tenured experience creating, engineering, and evolving cultural landscapes (both socially and topographically through urban design), the name was born.

What makes your business unique?

As an educated and trained interior designer who has learned to apply both my strategic and creative critical thinking multi-disciplinary experience to engineer thoughtful, innovative, and whimsical roadmaps to success for brands, individuals, and entrepreneurs of all types, I find it rare to find other brand, marketing, pr, and design agencies who apply a design philosophy to creative problem solving toward any outcome. Kat Cruz @drinkyourvibes www.drinkyourvibes.com

I had the pleasure of speaking with the founder of Drink Your Vibes, Kat Cruz. When speaking with her I knew right away that she is someone who really knows how to bring positivity to any situation. Her way of thinking and outlook on life is infectious and very inspiring. Kat founded Drink Your Vibes in 2020 (like many other quarantine born businesses) and when deciding what kind of business she wanted to run she knew it wanted it to be aligned with her beliefs. Interestingly enough the story behind the incredibly chic Drink Your Vibes water bottle is inspired by the Dr. Masaru Emoto water experiment. In this experiment, he showed the connection between the water inside the jars and the words that were labeled on the outside of the jars. The vibration from the words did the unthinkable and were transmitted into the state of the water.

The water jars labeled with high frequency / positive words such as love, gratitude, and beauty remained clean. However, the jars labeled with low vibrational or negative words became dirty, cloudy, and moldy. So with her water bottles having positive affirmations on the side rather than times of the day enforcing you to drink in a negative tone the DYV bottle puts Dr. Emoto’s experiment to the test. To try this theory for yourself visit www.drinkyourvibes.com to purchase a DYV bottle to start saving the planet and spreading good vibes. SUSTAINABLE LIVING FOR BEGINNERS By Samantha Diaz

Have you heard of sustainable living? Many of us are seeking a simple life where we minimize our impact on Mother Earth. Sustainable living may sound challenging at first, but it’s surprisingly easy, even for beginners. It doesn’t mean giving up every luxury or comfort in your life. It’s really about making simple changes and adjustments. If you’re wondering about sustainable living or thinking of giving it a shot, here’s what you need to know about the movement, along with easy ideas of sustainable living for beginners.

The sustainable living movement is rooted in the idea that humans create a significant impact on our planet. There’s only one earth, and as we’ve learned, many of our current activities are wreaking havoc on the environment. I’ve found sustainable living and minimalism are interconnected. As I’ve moved towards a simple, purposeful lifestyle, my impact on the earth has lessened. I’m more connected with nature and the world around me. My activities are automatically more sustainable. Now, you may worry sustainable living means never enjoying a dinner out with friends, buying clothing you like, or going on vacation, but this isn’t true at all. There are small steps to make any activity more sustainable. Sustainability means minimizing your impact on the world. It’s about adopting the “leave no trace” mindset, cleaning up after yourself, and caring for the planet. We want to leave a clean world for our children to enjoy. Adopt a sustainable lifestyle to ensure the health of the earth well into the future.

In a changing world due to COVID, many have picked up skills during their time in quarantine. However, if you are Lola Torres, based in Orlando FL, you start your own tote bag business.

One year and a lot of orders later, they now have been selling their items at different Faires and have their own website, eclecticmoonart.com.

“Last year in quarantine I was trying to pick up something to do, so I went to target and found a plain tote bag and was like “I can paint that” so I did and I showed my mom and she said ‘that’s a really good idea you should sell that!’” Torres said.

“I also sell t-shirts, stickers, prints, and framed art. I also want to expand into sweaters and other clothes as well.” Torres said.

In August 2020, Torres started selling her custompainted tote bags on websites such as Etsy, and Depop. Torres says that during COVID she was so bored, and while taking college classes online, she used her art to escape. “[My art] brought me a lot of comfort and peace,” she said.

Torres was always a creative child, she says. Her mom would bring up stories of how she would draw while watching cartoons, saying that it was good for their age. In fact, their mother is an artist as well.

For the past three years, Lola has been practicing sustainable living and has not only shared those habits to their loved ones, but to their customers in their reusable tote bags. “When I started my business, I tried as much as possible to use sustainable products and share this influence with my customers. I also think it’s important that so many other small businesses have been making this effort as well, because more and more big companies are following in our footsteps,” Torres said. They have many different bag options, from the permanent ones, limited edition, reversible, and even custom tote bags, Torres has many options to choose from to look stylish while supporting sustainable living with her reusable bags.

A fashion designer, hair stylist, and now a real estate agent who renovates properties, she is not only Lola's biggest supporter but a big inspiration for them as well. “I named my business after the first boutique she owned as a fashion designer,” Torres said. The future of her shop looks bright, with Torres saying their dream is to open up their own physical shop sometime in the future. “The past couple of months I have been daydreaming of my own shop, like a one-location shop I can manage. I want to be on the front line of my business always,” Torres said.

ECO-FRIENDLY HOME IMPROVEMENTS THAT SAVE MONEY

just

Eco-friendly home improvements are a real winwin. Who doesn’t love saving money and the environment at the same time? When you hear the words “sustainable living projects”, images of solar panels and elaborate terraced gardens might come to mind. But there are plenty of simple and affordable changes you can make at home to substantially lower your carbon footprint and energy use. Even DIY novices can tackle most of these eco-friendly home improvements with ease. Install low-flow or dual flush toilets

Toilets are one of the biggest water wasters in our homes. If your toilet was made before 1992, it could be using up to 3.5 gallons of water per flush! Today’s standard toilets are required to use no more than 1.6 gpf. However, you can cut that water usage in half with a few eco-friendly home improvements. One option is to swap your dated toilets for low-flow versions (a.k.a. high-efficiency toilets), which use around 1.3 gallons per flush. You could also choose to install dual flush toilets instead. These toilets give you the option of a standard 1.6 gpf flush or a 0.8 gpf flush. Finally, it’s possible to convert a standard toilet to a dual flush version. You can buy a conversion kit with everything you need to replace your old flush handle and system. It’s a more cost-effective option than replacing the entire toilet. Mount dual-direction ceiling fans

It’s amazing how much proper air circulation can cool down a room. Most people think of ceiling fans as devices for blowing air downward. But in the summer, it’s best to reverse the direction counterclockwise. This will suck up the warm air and disperse it outward, allowing the cooler air near the floor to accumulate beneath the fan. When you combine ceiling fans with the eco-friendly habit of opening windows for cooling, you’ll save a ton on energy costs.

Swap in LED light bulbs

It seems like just yesterday that we were all rushing out to swap our old incandescent bulbs for CFLs. But there’s a new energyefficient bulb in town, and it’s the LED. LED bulbs to have triple the lifespan of CFLs– 25,000 hours vs. 8,000 hours–and are cheaper to power. Plus, they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and even multi-color options. And unlike CFLs, they don’t contain any hazardous chemicals that require special disposal once they burn out. Smart LED bulb sets like the Philips Hue system can be controlled by an app or linked to your smart home programming. You can control the brightness, colors, and timing of each light, setting the perfect mood for any occasion. However, there are plenty of basic LED bulbs without the bells and whistles as well. Upgrade to energy-efficient appliances

Energy-efficient appliances are becoming the new normal. But if you purchased an older home, there’s a good chance your dishwasher, fridge, and washer are sucking up a ton of energy. While Energy Star-rated appliances are the gold standard, most newly manufactured models will use substantially fewer resources thanks to improvements in design and materials. For example, an Energy Star dishwasher uses between 30-50% less water than the six gallons used by standard machines. Similarly, new front loading washing machines use around 50% less water and 1/3 the energy than older top-loading models. High Efficiency (HE) top-loading laundry machines also use less water and have higher capacities, which means fewer loads of laundry and less energy use over time.

HOW TO INCREASE CREATIVITY IN THE BRAIN

Your subconscious mind is a powerhouse. It’s like a giant storage locker for your conscious mind. Your subconscious helpfully stores your memories, thoughts, skills, beliefs, events – basically, everything that has ever happened to you. Since there’s way too much information for you to focus on everything at once, it only brings information into focus in the direction of the conscious mind. The subconscious obeys the conscious mind without question. That’s why you can reprogram your subconscious mind by consciously repeating positive affirmations or reading inspirational quotes.

The subconscious mind is also one of the most valuable resources to inspire creativity and innovation. By tapping into it, you can gain deep insights into who you are and what you are struggling with. When you harness the power of your subconscious mind, you will make a conscious difference. You will think more creatively and be more creative. You may even find yourself realizing profound life lessons or coming up with creative solutions to your problems seemingly out of the blue! So, where to begin? With something, we all do every day– sleep. There are times when we can be creative through conscious deliberation. We think about a problem, and eventually, the answer becomes clear. Other times, it’s not so simple. If you can’t come up with a creative solution after struggling with the same issue for some time, try a different approach. Let it go. Turn it over to your subconscious. You might be surprised what the unfiltered part of your mind comes up with! Surprisingly, the best way to fuel your mind and increase creativity in the brain is by doing something that requires minimal effort – sleeping.

WHAT YOUR BRAIN DOES DURING SLEEP

We all need adequate sleep to function properly. Although we take a break from conscious thought and activity, our brains are busy working while we sleep. When we sleep, our bodies can perform so many important functions that they cannot complete while we are awake, including: Cleaning out toxins Creating and consolidating memories Repairing injuries Reducing inflammation Storing and organizing information Regulating hormones Bolstering the immune system Making creative connection DO A BRAIN DUMP

You dump the contents of your brain onto paper – your to-do list, nagging thoughts, long-lost goals, upcoming appointments, burning questions, anything and everything that’s on your mind. Once you have everything listed, you can then separate like items into categories. And from there, you can prioritize, plan and take action. I do brain dumps regularly because it helps me to reduce stress and overwhelm. And, according to neuroscientist and director of Baylor University’s Sleep, Neuroscience and Cognition Laboratory, Michael Scullin, writing this sort of to-do list before bed helps people fall asleep 30% faster than usual.

WONDER, DON’T WORRY

When we replace worry with wonder, we increase creativity in the brain. So, instead of thinking, “I’ll never figure out the ending to my novel,” think, “I wonder what Sam will say to Casey in the last chapter of my novel.”

HOW TO ROMANTICIZE YOUR LIFE WRITTEN BY LINDSAY FRANCOIS Life, unlike a rom-com, is not always so romantic to us. I just wish “ Walking on Sunshine” played in the background in the morning as I spring to the shower before my OOTD montage. Of course we can’t forget about me finally making it out of the house only three minutes into the movie (does no woman ever). A stranger offers me flowers, just because. Then, I get to work and since I am loved everywhere; I get high fives and “ wassups” with a cool head nod from everyone in the office. A real Elle Woods moment if you will. The best part is, I always do know that everything will work out in the end because well I am the main character and nothing bad ever happens to the main character.

Unlike a rom-com, romance needs to be curated. Typically tall guys with brown eyes do not confess their undying love for you in a song. UNFORTUNATELY. It doesn’t mean that you aren’t allowed to have the main character experience of a Lifetime movie. It’s just a matter of creating that romance for yourself, having the confidence you need to embrace the thought that no matter what scene you are playing in this movie, that everything will work out for the best. Here are a few ways you can do that:

BUY

YOURSELF

FLOWERS

Why sit at home and wait for someone else to buy you flowers when you can take the initiative and do it yourself. Flowers are notoriously known to trigger a happier mood which in the long run contributes to your overall health. This simple gesture to yourself is a great way to compliment you for just because reasons and treat yourself as your main character. In addition, carrying a bouquet will set the tone for future suitors that it is expected in your relationship. Everything more and nothing less for the main event over here!

MAKE

YOUR

BED

EVERYDAY

Okay, I know this one is easier said than done. Especially after you’ve snoozed your alarm twenty minutes past your wake-up time. Clean sheets and made beds are one of the highest contributors to a happy life. After a long day, there is nothing more satisfying than coming home to a clean room and a hotel-tucked bed to say, welcome home. Making your bed in the morning as soon as you wake up is also a great way for you to set your goals in motion for the day. Accomplishing a simple task such as this one triggers your goal digger mindset to push you towards your more heinous tasks later. ALWAYS

HAVE

A

COLORFUL

MEAL

It’s no secret that a colorful plate is always a healthier option than your average bagel and coffee morning. No offense to bagels of course! Eating healthier food and vegetables with every meal is a great way to romanticize your life and get the nutrients your temple needs to accelerate your mood. Not to mention, with a more colorful palette your meals are automatically more aesthetically pleasing. No retouching needed when your skin and your fruits look this good!

CELEBRATE

EVERYTHING

Yes! We love champagne and big or small we should always celebrate. One of the many ways you can allow yourself to grow and flourish is to document it in your own way every day. That can be by taking a picture and creating a collage full of moments when you jumped over a huge hurdle. Thanking a higher power for the hand provided in your journey. Or making some mimosas at home for you and your roommates. Maybe Carry Bradshaw had it right along, it’s celebrated in style so that we don’t let even the small details pass us by. Those memories are infinite and necessary for when the arduous days come along. Those memories will serve as a great montage in your movie that leads you to your AH-HA moment when you're down.

DRESS

TO

IMPRESS

SET

A

PICNIC

DATE

Fall is right around the corner. Which means it is also the perfect time to dust off your picnic basket and head out. I can’t think of anything more romantic and thoughtful than a picnic! It’s the perfect way to relax, read, paint, meditate, journal and be one with nature. Although I haven’t dated myself, I’m betting that I am pretty good company. However scary it seems to extroverts, spending time alone is a sure great way to explore peace and quiet of the mind. That’s what romanticizing your life is all about, being at peace, blissful happiness, and building confidence.

(YOURSELF)

I will never stop preaching about the need to look your best to feel your best. In my soon 23 years of age, truer words have never been uttered. If there was anything Elle Woods knew how to do, it was to dress up. I, a seven-year-old watching her back then, surely was impressed. Expressing your individuality through your clothes is a great way to introduce yourself to the world, and remain confident in the person you are introducing the world to. Your fashion senses might not be Barbie-inspired like Miss Woods, but it is inspired by what you love and who you are. If there is anyone that you can trust more than yourself, it’s yourself. So be you and show up as you. COMPLIMENT

UP

YOURSELF:

Self-love is just about the most romantic kind of love there is. Self-love is practiced in so many ways: working out, meditating, mirror techniques, skincare, prayer, etc...The mirror technique for those who struggle with selfconfidence is a great way to start. Get in front of the mirror and confront the negative self doubts you’ve bullied yourself into believing. Rather than focusing on everything that could go wrong or what you do not like about yourself, rather focus on the little things you do like. Like that one slight dimple that shows up when you smile. Or the fact that you woke up early today. This is your rom-com, so have some fun with it!

ADAPTING TO

CHANGE

THROUGHOUT

Two times a year, usually in the beginning and towards the end, we allow ourselves to take some time to create a plan on where it is we feel we should be and even reflect on the things we can change or improve to get to where we should be. For some, this may not be as easy to pursue due to life's unexpected challenges. Not everyone has a clear vision of where they see themselves two years from now. Many face the idea of what their purpose may be in life and struggle day-to-day with it. We can't control the things that we endure in life that aren't a part of the plan, but we can control what we want to do with those things. Not everything will go according to plan, and not every end result will be what we want it to be. That doesn't mean that we have failed or that we will never get there. It means, that we must learn to accommodate those things as they come and use them to our advantage. Look at it from this perspective, us what life hands you as a stepping-stone to where you need to be.

SELAZNOG .M.J YB NETTIRW

TRANSFORMATION

For every negative thought, or event that you face, try and use it to how it can benefit you. Have you ever been in a situation where you were unsure of which direction to take? You outweighed your options and felt that if you went this way it could end up the way you want it to, but may cause you to give up something you love or you went the other way, it can allow you to have something you love but the outcome isn't what you want? This is the feeling of a double edge sword sort of speak. No matter which direction you decide to take there is a sacrifice that’s needed. Have you ever found yourself to be an overthinker? You can't help but just overthink every decision and all the results that may stem from that decision? This can be frustrating sometimes because you only want what's best for yourself and you are trying to prevent anything that can slow down the results you seek. You’ve worked so hard to get to where you are now, and any wrong decision can take you a few steps back or allow you to start all over. You may have found yourself in similar situations in the past and the outcome wasn’t good. This is all a part of the growing process and what is needed to transform into the greater version of yourself. We must learn to adapt to change, we must change in order to grow. We must be able to step out of comfort zones because if we stay where we are comfortable then how can we be able to transition? Just like our jobs, who create a vision, a goal (daily and monthly), and work values, is how we should be with ourselves at home with our personal visions, goals, and values. Things may be hard, you may feel alone, you may have no sense of direction or guidance, and you may even want to give up. This is all a part of the growing process and the transformation that is taking place in your life. You may not understand why the things that are taking place are happening but just know that there is a reason for it and with time you will be able to see the bigger picture and find yourself exactly where you are designed to be.

LOOKING AT LIFE WITH A POSITIVE LENS Written by Melissa Cancio

Surprisingly enough, I have experienced so much change in just a short time. With graduation, travel, a new job, and juggling life as a whole, change has made quite the impact. I try to look at life through a positive lens in every aspect I can. I think that’s what’s helped me grow into the person I am today. So, to embrace change is like knowing you have the ability to conquer anything in life. It all starts with your outlook on it. Life is filled with surprises, and that’s the beauty of it. I love looking forward to every day at my job because everyday is different. Whether you have an in-person, remote, or hybrid job 9-5 or a remote or a hybrid type of job, it’s through your efforts that you make it an interesting day! I do that at work everyday. Start with “good morning” to those you work with or a random family member you decided to call that day. Check in with your friends and family just to see how they’re doing. It’s honestly the little things in life, at least for me. And take the time to do some self care before bed. I know, for me, after a long day, I just want to relax for a few hours and potate. Soak in your day!

Side note: my definition of potate is “to be a couch potato.” I just use it as a verb. You’ll hear me use it in real life or in my writing too. Have fun with it!

Travel keeps you moving and allows you to learn of new cultures. I love being able to experience the foods fromthat make up the culture that I’m visiting, and trying to learn aboutdiscover their traditions. You never know what kinds of traditions you can implement with your family! As you travel, you naturally find your niche of people you like to explore with; w. Whether it be your family, friends, siblings, or people you just met! There’s so many opportunities and doors that will open because you were able to explore somewhere new. AND don’t forget to take pictures! The memories last longer and you can share them as others view them. As you get that job promotion, you make that new friend or you find a new hobby, you can have happy thoughts running through your mind all day. WhenAs you embrace change and make it a part of your life, just think of what makes YOU happy and how you can look at life through every positive way. I promise, it’ll make a world of difference! Xoxo,

HOW TO REALIGN YOUR THIRD EYE CHAKRA Do you ever feel paralyzed by indecision? Is your problem not a lack of options but a lack of clarity about which options to pursue? Do you ever wish you could surrender and let someone wiser tell you what to do? If this sounds familiar, balancing your ajna may help.

What Exactly is Ajna?

Ajna is the Sanskrit name for your third eye chakra. Located at the brow point between your eyes, it is associated with inspiration, as well as insight and intuition. When ajna is in balance, we experience a deep understanding of our inner and outer worlds.

While our physical eyes are associated with the past and the present experience as it unfolds, it's said that ajna looks to the future. Freed from the distractions of doubt and confusion, we can visualize our next steps with confidence and clarity. Your ajna can often become underactive, causing us to lose our connection with our true wisdom. This leads to the experiences described above, feeling lost and without purpose, ultimately succumbing to depression.

Less common, but still possible, is the opposite, where ajna is overactive and needs calming. Overactivity causes us to become too introspective and judgmental. We may lose our connection with others and become dissociated from the manifest world. How can We Bring Ajna Into Balance? The good news is there is a lot you can do to support, nurture and balance ajna. Any meditation, mantra, or yoga practice can be performed with a focus on the brow point, encouraging your inner eye to come into balance.

Using a Bija Mantra

The bija mantra or seed syllable of ajna is "om" or "aum." Chanting om with your eyes closed and focusing on the brow point is ideal for connecting with your insight and intuition. It can be exciting in the morning or at the start of an ajnacentered yoga practice to help you set your intention. Working with Hakini Mudra

Hakini mudra is associated with ajna and is thought to promote the awareness and focus that leads to better insight and intuition. It's also a mudra that many people will intuitively adopt when thinking deeply - perhaps they sense its benefit in connecting with wisdom and understanding.

To practice it:

Bring the hands together with the fingertips and thumb tips in contact and space between the palms. Have the thumbs pointing towards the body, arms relaxed, and elbows pointed out the sides. Hold the mudra for several minutes in meditation.

Nadi Shodhana Pranayama

As a practice on its own, nadi shodhana pranayama, or alternate nostril breathing, is already known for its balancing effects. Its effects on ajna can be enhanced with this variation: Place your right hand's index and middle fingers on the brow point to keep the focus on ajna. Close your right nostril with your right thumb and inhale through the left nostril for a count of four. Close the left nostril with the left ring finger, release the right nostril and exhale for a count of four through the right. Keep the left nostril closed as you inhale through the right for a count of four. Close the right nostril with the thumb, open the left nostril and exhale for a count of four. Repeat steps 2-5 for several minutes, perhaps increasing the count to 6 or 8 to further calm and steady the mind. Once the breath practice is complete, allow yourself a minute to return to your natural breath and tune your awareness into your present experience. Ajna Balancing Asanas

Balasana or a child's pose is the pose most often associated with ajna. This is for two main reasons. Firstly, the forehead can come to the mat, physically grounding the brow point and connecting it to earth. Gently rocking the head from side to side can give an extra massage to this area. Secondly, the child's pose is a gentle and supported forward fold. Forward folds can help encourage introspection and self-study. Other forward folds that can help balance ajna include uttanasana (standing forward fold) and prasarita padottanasana (wide-legged standing forward fold). Placing a block or bolster under the forehead will provide additional stimulation.

Meditation

Meditation is already a powerful practice for awakening and connecting with ajna. To enhance this, begin your meditation with a visualization of the third eye chakra as a glowing ball of indigo light swirling at the brow point. Imagine this spinning vortex growing brighter as the light radiates into every cell of your being, then gradually allow it to resettle into the ball at your brow point, perfectly balanced and in harmony. Another meditative practice that can be beneficial is trataka. Sit in front of a lit candle and settle your gaze on the flame, holding it there gently without blinking for around two minutes. Then close your eyes and continue to see the flame in your mind's eye. This is thought to open and enhance the power of ajna.

Other Strategies

Yoga and mediation are all very well, but what about when you want to integrate a bit more intuition and insight into the rest of your day? Fear not; there are lots you can try. The smell of patchouli, myrrh, and frankincense are all associated with this ajna. Try scenting your home with these essential oils or placing a few. If you find yourself with a little free time in the evening, both stargazing and listening to classical music are said to be good for balancing ajna. If nothing else, they're great ways to relax and recharge, which is bound to help you reconnect with your wisdom and imagination.

A Final Word to the Wise

Remember, as you move through these practices to be gentle with yourself. The only objective is to stay present with your experience. Your intuitive power is already within you, so you don't need to force it to come to the fore. Instead, trust that it will awaken and give it the space and encouragement it needs. Try to let go of any expectation of effect, but at the same time, be open and receptive to any insights that may arise. In time, with attention, practice, and sensitivity, you'll receive the guidance and clarity you need.

HOW TO CALL YOUR ENERGY BACK

In your day-to-day interactions, you may be exchanging energy with other people, places, and situations. Your energy field is ALWAYS interacting with the energy fields of others. Even if you aren’t actively trying to do this - your energy field has to be in sensing mode so that you can effectively pick up on things, like valuable warning signs from creeps. Everything made of energy (everything that exists) also has an energetic field, an aura, including you. All-day, parts of your aura (energy field) are being sent out in the form of words or thoughts, for example, to connect with other individuals. As someone speaks to you, their energy is being sent in your direction. And when you talk to someone else, YOUR energy is being sent in their direction. Suppose you exert a lot of energy – physical, emotional, or mental energy, in a conversation, meeting, project, or task. In that case, you are sending quite a bit of your energy out into this interaction. When the interaction, situation, or chance meeting is over, your energy doesn’t automatically come back to you. It could still be all tied to someone or somewhere else. This could make you tired, exhausted, and it can even cause you to continue to think about troubling interactions, encounters, and daytime responsibilities when you want to disconnect. Even the most Divinely aligned humans get stretched pretty thin energetically - ever had an emotionally draining day? Yep, it’s pretty much like that, and even worse if you have trouble disconnecting and turning your brain off to STOP putting energy towards a troubling interaction.

Calling Back Your Energy

When you don’t call your energy back to you, what happens then is that your energy is out and about, existing everywhere else but in your physical, spiritual, and energetic bodies. To help you feel more energized, centered, present, and, let’s face it, less obsessive, you can try calling your energy back to you. The process of calling your energy back is known as Energy Retrieval. It’s easy to do and learn, and once you get it down, the whole exercise can take you as little as 5 minutes to complete. I do it often, and I like to pair it with an essential oil blend to help bring back even more energy. The essential practice of energy retrieval – learn to call your energy back in just a few minutes. Energy Retrieval Ritual: How to Call Your Energy Back

Find a comfortable place to sit and close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths and relax. Identify the locations of your energy. Recall your day and week, paying specific attention to all areas and people to whom you have given a lot of your energy. (If you’re paring this activity with essential oil, put a drop in your palm, rub your palms together, and breathe it in). As you sit, allow these locations of your energy to come to mind. Do you think that your energy exists with your kids, who have been asking a lot of you today? Believe it – if this is an area where you have expended your energy, you can call it back to you. What about your partner? Did you have an argument or disagreement earlier, and imagine that perhaps this is a place where your energy might be? Your boss and workplace may be pretty demanding. Consider this as a place where you’ve dedicated a lot of energy, too. Do you imagine that your energy has been left behind at the office or in an interaction with your coworkers, boss, or team? Have you been thinking about the interaction you had with someone in the parking lot at the grocery store or in the school pick-up line? Time to disconnect from it!

IT’S TIME TO CALL YOUR ENERGY BACK.

Visualize your energy returning to you.

Each thought that comes to your mind, or image that you see, trust that this is a location of your energy, and ask it, out loud or in your mind, to return to your body. Imagine all of your energy returning to you from places parallel, past, present, and future. Years in the past and years in the future alike, we unconsciously send our energy to this time when we think about these moments. I like to visualize this as a CUL DE SAC of houses with the LIGHTS ON, and cords are stretching from me to the houses; as I pull each cord in, the light in the matching house goes out. Go around the circle, and visualize the cords pulling back and lights shutting off one by one. Visualize your energy as a golden stream of light flowing back into your body. Choose your center point, and imagine it returning to that place. Imagine your energy flowing in through your mouth, swallowing and resting within your stomach, your physical center. As your energy continues to flow in, imagine a glowing ball of light growing within you. As the ball of light gets larger and larger, eventually extending into your aura, filling your aura beyond your physical body, less and less of your energy returns out in time and space. Continue until your energy is returned and the stream of light, external to you, has faded. That’s it! Performing this exercise daily, even on days where you are exhausted, can help you feel a restored sense of vitality and alertness, ready to give of yourself again.

FALL The

Season

of

Letting

G0

BY DR. CLAIRE MUSELMAN

Fall is my favorite season. I love the cooler temperatures, the beautiful leaves changing, the way comfortable clothes make their comeback with vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red. Being from Iowa, I would be mistaken to not acknowledge one of the most important moments… college football season is upon us! (Go Hawkeyes!!) <- Shameless plug… With fall comes the return of school, not only for my daughter who is attending, but for me as a college professor. I love the ability to have more structure and routine as I have always been someone who believes they thrive without routine, when in all actuality, that is a routine. Fall allows me the chance to take stock with the path my life currently is on and regroup with the journey ahead. This includes my personal goals in life, career, family, and academia.

With change comes a new appreciation for where we can go and how we can approach our daily lives. Fall is a great reminder to reset and remember we are only a few consistent habits away from a completely different life. I also find this magic within nature, especially during this time of the year because the trees lose their leaves and if you have gotten to know me over the past year, I am very glitter and sparkle. I look at fall as a gift from nature because when the trees lose their leaves, they create the most incredible natural glitter from Mother Nature. Take a moment to look at this fall on paths, streets, and sidewalks. You will see what I mean. It is beautiful and a great message that letting go, shedding what no longer serves you, and moving forward in life is a beautiful and freeing thing to do.

As we experience the trees letting go of their leaves, it is a reminder to take time and check in with yourself!! I need to make time for my own personal reflection and by creating awareness around this, I hope you will too. We can take a lesson from nature on how to release and let go. It is in itself… FREEDOM. We can take this idea of freedom through shedding as a wonderful opportunity to reflect on what we can loosen our grip to let go. We can let go of patterns in our life, behavioral changes we have made throughout the pandemic (ahem… for me it is wine), and physical clutter that may have accumulated around our homes. I have a very big opportunity within my own life to change some habits that may or may not have led to a few of the covid-19 pounds… okay, it was much more than 19 pounds, but I am acknowledging there are some habits to change, mold, and figure out how to simply move forward in a healthy and productive manner. Trees lose their leaves at different times throughout fall which has always been a great reminder for me to accept the timing of what is happening in my own life. While I did gain weight over the pandemic, I also found my happiness in ways that truly serve my higher purpose. I am happy daily, excited about life in ways I didn't think were possible. I pause, and experience thanks, gratitude, and happiness for these moments because it took a lot to get here. I am thankful for the struggles along the way because they were the lessons needed to open up the path ahead, clearing the brush away for what comes next.

I love seeing the wind rush through the leaves creating a beautiful sound you must pause and be still to hear. Being still, being present, paying attention to the small details such as the quiet sound of the wind through these leaves… There are certain leaves that hit the sun just right during this process and make a beautiful glittery reflection, like the process of where we are and who we have become. (I call these glitter trees and really need to figure out exactly what type of tree they are… I know this tree is a soft wood so we have a start.) This fall, I encourage you to try two things to help you let go of what may be ready to fall away from your life to clear a path for what is unseen and yet to come. I need to do this as well and by sharing with you, I hold myself accountable.

THE FIRST

Go through your belongings and give away whatever you are not using. This morning, I had some workout leggings fall out of my closet and I forgot I even had them. Now laugh with me because I already expressed my need to figure out new routines to help with the covid-19 pounds so is this not the universe planting it in front of me? These leggings falling out of my closet in front of my face at 5:00 am made me dig deeper into the closet, pulling out multiple pairs of leggings that had not been worn in quite some time. It made me realize how much I need to get rid of to be able to find what I am looking for which is a great analogy for life too, right? The realization I had not worn these leggings in a long time, meaning I may not have worked out as much as I would have liked, reminded me that awareness is the catalyst to change. Start now. Start today. I put on other workout clothes and promptly took myself to yoga.

I frequently visit a very tranquil and meditative state when I start my mornings off with yoga. During this session, the leggings that fell out of my closet earlier in the morning continued to cross my mind. We have a lot of time to accumulate. Other people may not be as fortunate. And this sparked another need for me to let go. I should give these leggings away to someone who will use them. It is time to take the items I am not using and pass them along or recycle them. I came home and quickly separated out leggings I wore and those I had not worn in the past 60-90 days. If it does not bring you happiness, it is time to move on and let go! Clearing out clutter has been shown to improve happiness because it opens space and creates a feeling of letting go of dead weight. This was far more than having extra pairs of workout leggings lying around. I made a plan and got to work, cleaning out the following: workout clothes, coffee mugs, kitchen drawers, the dreaded hall closet, and the junk drawer. Time to move the junk out and create space… space to think, breathe, and simply be present. What a great feeling!! Are there any areas of your house or life you can do this with too?

As I sat outside this past weekend, I took pen to paper and wrote out the answers to these questions. The answers were insightful and helped me gain perspective on what has come from 2021 thus far. This helped me gain clarity on the importance of people in my life and those who have moved me forward. It helped me understand and embrace what truly sets my soul on fire. More importantly, this exercise helped me feel grateful for all of the change that has occurred, taking stock that letting go of things I once found important really helps clear the way for the opportunity to greet you with a smile, inviting you along a journey you may have never found. During the month of September, I hope you can learn to let things that no longer serve you fall away, even the things you cling to, in order to pay attention to what really lights you up and makes you feel amazing. Find out what drains you and what causes added stress so you can focus on what energizes you and brings you peace. Things in life that cause me frustration and tension I am avidly trying to change, especially if I am the one in control of it. While doing a lot of personal reflection, I realized I am my biggest barrier and I need to change that to be my biggest source of energy!

THE SECOND

Sit with yourself and write down the answers to these three questions: What did I accomplish this year that I am most proud of? What do I want to say goodbye to? What do I still want to complete before the year is over?

Letting go allows for something new to come later. Letting go opens up space for what is next to enhance your life. I hope you will join me in letting go of what no longer serves you. Whether tangible or intangible… let it go! Here is to embracing fall, and becoming our own trees, shedding the leaves of what no longer serves us. Just begin…

HOW TO STAY HAPPY AND ENERGIZED IN THE AFTERNOON

You're in the middle of an amazing day, but you can feel your energy starting to wane. Well, it's time for a quick break! The afternoon is the perfect time to take care of yourself and refuel before going back at it. Here are five habits that will help you stay happy and energized when mid-day hits: WRITTEN BY MELLY DIAZ

MEDITATE

Meditate for 5 minutes or do some light stretching. After staring at a computer screen all morning it's important to take a break and meditate or do some stretching to get your blood flowing.

TAKE

A

WALK

OUTSIDE

going outside is a great way to get some fresh air and take in the natural light. Taking time to notice your surroundings as you stretch or do yoga poses along the way. Bring with you water, snacks like nuts or dried fruit if desired, headphones for music, sunglasses, sunscreen (or protective clothing).

GO

CARB-LESS

FOR

LUNCH

protein and veggies are your best option for lunch. If you need some carbs, then go with a small rice bowl or quinoa salad for dinner instead of bread at lunch. Eat as many vegetables as possible to get in more vitamins and minerals that will give you great energy!

TIME

BLOCK

YOUR

SCHEDULE

take time to plan your day in advance so you know what needs to be done. This way, you can spend less of your energy on decision making and more time doing the thing!

STAY

HYDRATED

Drink lots of water and herbal teas to stay hydrated. Most people don't realize that you can be tired simply because you are just not hydrated. Rather than going to pick up another cup of coffee try drinking a whole glass of water.

How to Feel Confident About Speaking Up in Team or Corporate Meetings

WRITTEN BY RACHEL GREVE

Does the thought of sharing your honest opinions and ideas in front of your department, co-workers, or clients immediately stress you out? Do you often suffer from imposter syndrome after work meetings, feeling out of place in the very role you were hired to do? If so, you’re far from alone, friend! In fact, welcome to the club—grab a seat, but don’t get too comfortable. Coming from someone who’s worked on marketing teams where pitching new ideas and providing peer feedback face-to-face was a daily occurrence in meetings, I’ve had my fair share of mini anxiety attacks before work meetings. That is, until one day I chose not to keep feeling this way. And my hope for you is that you’ve chosen this for yourself, too. Here are a few things you can do to help you feel more confident about speaking up during your next work meeting.

workplace wellness

PRIORITIZE PREPARING FOR MEETINGS AHEAD OF TIME

I can attest to the truly stressful and anxious feeling of showing up to a meeting unprepared. Actually, there are very few worse feelings in a workplace environment. It’s time to prioritize preparing for your meetings. Sounds a bit obvious though, right? While that may be the case, we still often lose track of time or put it off until five minutes before the meeting starts. As soon as you get the meeting invite, block off some time in your schedule to thoroughly prepare for the meeting. Take notes. Brainstorm ideas ahead of time. Consider who will be in attendance. Jot down any concerns or possible problems that people might bring up. It’s always better to feel over prepared than underprepared—trust me. I’ve found that preparing in advance for each meeting has been a total game changer when it comes to finding the confidence to share my ideas and opinions. In fact, it also helps me articulate my ideas better so I can clearly communicate them when it comes time to do so.

GET DOWN TO THE SOURCE

Have you always felt insecure or uncomfortable speaking up in meetings? Did someone create a negative experience for you that has since always made you feel this way?

Sometimes in order to overcome a stressinducing situation or environment, getting down to the source is key. Try to pinpoint exactly when you started feeling this way. Was it during school in a classroom setting? In a meeting room with your co-workers? In a large conference room with important stakeholders or investors? Once you identify when you started to feel this way, ask yourself why you started to feel anxious about that situation or who made you feel that way. Getting down to the source will help determine the most beneficial way to boost your confidence in meetings. If it was a person that made you feel this way, know that it likely was not personal. If it’s a group of people that make you feel intimidated, remember that you were hired for your position because you are good at what you do and your company values your work and ideas. LEARN TO VALUE AND WELCOME PEER FEEDBACK

Are you easily discouraged when someone provides feedback on your work or ideas? Do you get defensive? These feelings are completely valid and more common than you think. But don’t let that stop you from sharing your thoughts and ideas in meetings.Peer feedback is an extremely valuable tool you can use to provide a fresh perspective on something you may not have thought of otherwise. Collaboration and teamwork is so important in the workplace.

workplace wellness

EASE INTO IT AT YOUR OWN PACE

If hardly getting a word in during meetings is what you’re used to and in your comfort zone, then you might want to ease into this change. You don’t have to just show up one day and voice every idea you’ve ever had. Start with just one or two points you’ve been wanting to bring up in a meeting. Ask questions first if you don’t fully understand something. Agree with something your co-worker has pitched and simply tell them why you thought it was a good idea. Easing into speaking up will help you gain momentum and confidence in no time.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Sitting and being held hostage by your own anxiety during yet another meeting is a dreadful feeling. The good news? It doesn’t have to be this way and you are certainly not the only one to bear these feelings. The days of sitting silently while your co-workers exchange ideas and express their concerns are over. You’ve got a lot to offer—you know it and we know it. It’s time to let everyone else know it.

8 SIGNS THAT YOU’RE OUTGROWING YOUR LIFE + WHAT TO DO

WRITTEN BY GABBY SANCHEZ

In an unpredictable world where you want to have it all together, the “faking it until you make it” approach may not always be in your favor. With the world moving in several different directions, you may be feeling lost, unsure, or just unhappy. Whatever you are feeling during this time of your life is more than normal. Although you may feel alone, this is the perfect time to welcome change with open arms.

Although change is something humans greatly fear, it is the harsh inevitable. The good news is that everything is temporary. The bad news is, too, that everything is temporary. They say that every ending is a new beginning, so take the plunge. Here are eight signs you’re outgrowing your life andwhat to do so you can welcome the change with open arms:

Nothing seems to excite you anymore.

1

You mapped out your game plan and wanted it all. Once you got it all, it was not what you expected. Now, you feel as if your dreams are at a halt which puts you in a: “What do I do now?” state of mind. What to do: Spend some time however long to digging dig deep within yourself. Meditate, pray, or simply explore research whatever interests you that you have yet to try. The world is your oyster. You don’t feel like you have anything to share with your friends.

2

You’re going through a change that only YOU understand. Supportive or not, your friends may not have the right advice for you. What to do: Journal and write! Nothing feels more safer yet liberating than writing down everything you feel.

You’re more reserved/personal with your life.

3

4

5

You feel more reserved because you see everyone around you so sure of their lives. While everyone is posting their successes, you feel like you’re behind. What to do: Stop comparing yourself to others! You are your OWN answer and your OWN entity. You operate differently compared to others. You find yourself dreading to go out and be social.

The thought of someone asking you: “How are you these days?” makes you anxious. What to do: Date yourself. Take yourself on dates! Go get your favorite treats and do your favorite hobbies alone! Spending time alone does not necessarily mean you are alone.

Your geographic location brings too many negative emotions and memories.

Whether you moved to a different part of the world or stayed in your hometown, nowhere feels like “home” to you anymore. What to do: Book a staycation or go the extra mile (pun intended) and travel somewhere else! See what there is to do that you like in a completely new city! No one knows your name or your story. Although with the pandemic, please follow health precautions.

You stay living in your

7

daydream universe.

Although we all drift off, for whatever reason, fantasy seems better than reality.. What to do: Analyze your daydream universe and your happy place. What’s there? What’s not there? What in this daydream universe can you add to your life or work to have in your real life?

Your goals have completely

8

changed compared to what you originally thought you wanted.

We are all like the moon: going through phases. You wanted one thing when you were in your late teens. Now in your early 20s, you may not want that anymore. What to do: Pinterest, vision board, and even physically design it! Whatever you decide to do, remember you are not alone in this. Whether you have realized it or not, you are in the driver’s seat of your own life.

Life feels like that Spongebob episode

6

where Squidward moves and lives a repetitive life cycle.

We all remember the episode and how miserable Squidward was. Everyone around him was happy with their daily cycle but Squidward was tired of it quickly. What to do: Change your routine! Incorporate what YOU feel like YOU need more of in your day. Do you need more self-care? Do you need more peace and quiet? Dig deep in what your routine needs more of. You’re in control.

Believe in yourself

PORTLAND, OREGON: A GUIDE TO THE CITY OF ROSES

Portland, Oregon, is a beautiful city in the Pacific Northwest. Portland has been nicknamed "The City of Roses" because it has many rose gardens and parks. Portland also has a great food and drink scene, diverse neighborhoods, and lots of bike paths. There’s so much to see and do that it can be hard to craft the perfect Portland itinerary and boil down your must-do’s into a couple of days. I recently visited Portland and have put together all of my favorites into one fun-packed itinerary! Portland has some of the most amazing restaurants and cuisine I have experienced in any city, ever. Here’s a great Portland itinerary that will have you falling in love with this quirky city. Oh, and be ready to EAT! WRITTEN BY SAMANTHA DIAZ

Pearl District Portland

Portland’s historic Pearl District is one of Portland’s best neighborhoods for art and shopping. The area has a ton to offer, from galleries showcasing cuttingedge works by up-and-coming Portland artists to upscale boutiques that carry the latest trends in fashion. If you are looking for something sweet after all those antique stores and boutiques, Portland’s famous Voodoo Doughnuts is one of Portland's most popular doughnut shops. With a delicious selection of gourmet doughnuts and other tasty treats to choose from, you will not be disappointed with your visit here! Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Portland is a coffee lover’s dream, and Portlanders are proud of their rich history in the industry. Stumptown Coffee Roasters wasn't always Portland's favorite, though! This local company was established back in 1999 by Duane Sorenson, who worked on his roasting skills for years before finally opening up shop with this Portland-born company. Visit Powell’s City of Books

Portland is home to Powell’s City of Books, a gigantic bookstore that has something for everyone. You can find just about any book you could ever want here, and it also houses restaurants, coffee shops, and even an in-store movie theater! St. Johns Bridge

Portland’s St. John's Bridge is a pedestrian-only bridge that connects Portland and its neighboring city, St Johns, to the south of Portland. The area around this spectacular architectural feat has become quite trendy in recent years, which means lots of great restaurants and shops can be found here! Pittock Mansion

Pittock Mansion is Portland’s most well-known attraction and the city’s biggest tourist destination. This beautiful mansion offers various tours, including one that gives you access to the private gardens!

Portland Stag Sign

Portland’s Stag Sign is located on NW 23rd Ave and has been a Portland staple for decades. The sign originally read “Welcome to Portland Oregon, the Rose City” but was changed in 2010 when an astute local noticed that it would constantly be seen with a yellow hue at different times of the day because of the sun. Keep Portland Weird Sign

If you visit Portland, you need to get the obligatory shot in front of this famous wall. Period. Veggie Grill

Portland's first vegetarian fast food restaurant, Veggie Grill, is a Portland institution. You should also try their vegan "chickin" sandwich with the housemade buffalo sauce! You won’t regret it. Vtopia Restaurant & Cheese Shop

Portland's Vtopia Restaurant & Cheese Shop is a Portland institution for all things cheese! They have over 350 different types of cheeses from around the world and offer tastings so you can find your favorite. It's is also home to a first-of-its-kind vegan winery. Portlanders love their craft beer, so it only makes sense to take Portland's obsession with veganism and apply the same ethos to wine! Portland is a city for foodies of all kinds. Whether you want fresh-pressed juice or an in-store movie theater, Portland has something for everyone. Blue Star Donuts

Portland is home to the one and only Blue Star Donuts. Portlanders love their donuts, so this Portland original has been serving up breakfast treats since 2010 when they opened shop in NE Portland! In addition to having a wide selection of flavors, you can also get your donut with an ice cream sandwich for dessert or as part of their breakfast sandwich.

CLAIRE TO CLAIRE: ENHANCING THE LENS WITH THE FUTURE OF TOMORROW

just

As we look to the dawn of a new era and see the future of tomorrow at our doorsteps coming into our industry, now is the time to spotlight the talent changing the game. Meet Claire Richardson. I had the opportunity to meet Claire through mutual acquaintances and was simply blown away by her energy, outlook, and aspirations for the future of the insurance industry through her outlook on the captive marketplace. It was then and there I knew we all need to know Claire. First and foremost, Claire is impressive. She has a warm smile and an energetic tone coupled with a force of awesome through excitement about the future of the insurance marketplace. Graduating from Butler University in 2021, Claire majored in Risk Management & Insurance and played an active role in Gamma Iota Sigma. While holding two leadership positions during her time in Gamma Iota Sigma, Claire launched, created, and hosted the Risk & Reward Podcast educating others about the risk management space. In addition, Claire achieved multiple semesters on the Dean’s list and was the MJ Student-Run Insurance Company’s CEO for the 2020-2021 school year. And that’s not all… Claire’s expertise continues to grow and develop through active involvement with industry associations like Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) and the Risk & Insurance Management Society (RIMS). It is now time to introduce you to Claire.

Why did you / what made you want to join the insurance sector?

The wealth of opportunity in the space is unmatched. The industry is one that needs individuals in marketing, audit, actuarial, legal, banking, taxation, and more. Being able to specialize within the insurance industry was also a factor as even if you chose underwriting, you are not limited to the industries you touch. For example, if you begin your career doing only property underwriting and end up hating it, you can still use that knowledge while learning another area of underwriting, all while likely even remaining with the same company.

You bring up such a good point. There are so many opportunities within this space. I tell my students at Drake University if you do not have any idea what you want to do, join the insurance industry looking at it from a large scale of marketing, finance, actuarial, sales, business development, customer service, client relations… I was blessed to be able to attend conferences & network with hundreds of individuals while in college. These experiences set me up for success. Not only did I learn from every individual I spoke with, but I was able to build a network of support. Nearly every person I talked with said the phrase “reach out if you need anything” or “I am so glad you’re here”. This remains true to this day as I grow into the captive insurance niche.

The insurance industry will continue to evolve, and I believe the biggest trend to continue will be the use of technology for risk management purposes. Tracking devices for workers' compensation safety use, cameras in autos/trucks, downloadable real-time data will become increasingly important for organizations to manage their risk. Additional areas will be the insurance industry talent recruitment and building in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) initiatives into all aspects of their operations. I also see continued captive utilization! Because of the current hard market, many companies are realizing the value of captive insurance companies. In the next five years, the market is likely to soften slightly, and the surplus these companies have built in their captives can now be used for increasingly creative purposes and with long-term risk management benefits in mind.

I am extremely thankful to work for a company and department that has a great deal of creative freedom to execute business in the best manner for the clients. With this, there are virtually no operating efficiencies that I would change about my position or industry, bearing I have been in my full-time job for just over two months.

favorite

insurance commercial?

Hands down, Progressive’s “don’t turn into your parents” commercials with Dr. Rick.

nigeb enizagam

In my opinion, insurance commercials don’t serve the purpose of selling insurance, they sell the company instead, and make it memorable. The downfall to this is when you ask a consumer what is covered under their homeowner’s insurance, oftentimes they do not know. While I understand the reasoning behind large insurers putting the funding into successful marketing campaigns, it is troubling that consumers still do not know what the insurance they are buying covers.

tsuj

Oh my gosh… me too… me too. And the tough part, I have become those parents. My daughter keeps reminding me…I have the too many pillows like my mother but definitely have avoided the ‘live laugh love’ or as Dr. Rick puts it ‘no cussin’ no fussin’ and the art is thrown away. *insert laughter
