Truman Heartland Community Foundation Annual Report 2009

Page 1

from the chairman of the board… On behalf of your Community Foundation’s Board of Directors, I want to personally thank you for

your commitment to charitable giving. 2009 was a year marked by change --- from the ups and downs of the stock market to hiring a new President and CEO for the Community Foundation. Despite the uncertainty of the economy and investments, donors gave generously through

their charitable funds to support programs across Eastern Jackson County. Grants from donor funds totaled more than $3.5 million in 2009! Your support last year allowed us to help a number of new donors experience a better way of giving. It is our privilege to be a charitable partner to so many individuals and businesses in our communities. During 2009, we said goodbye to two staff members. Our President and CEO of 10 years, Dr. Paul M. Thomson, chose to retire from the Community Foundation last October. In addition, our Office Manager of 15 years, Nancy Wilhelm, chose to retire from the Community Foundation last December. Under Paul’s leadership, the Community Foundation saw tremendous growth in assets, including the development of nearly $60 million in planned gifts, as well as the expansion of programs and services to donors and nonprofits. The Board chose to honor Paul by establishing the Dr. Paul M. Thomson

Professional Advisor of the Year Award. The award will be given to a professional advisor at this year’s gala for his/her exemplary efforts in encouraging charitable giving. We applaud Paul for his vision and commitment to promoting charitable giving in Eastern Jackson County and know that he will enjoy his retirement. Replacing Paul is Phillip Hanson, our new President and CEO. Following an extensive search, the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors is very pleased Phil accepted the position. He and the Board are excited about the opportunities in the coming decade to increase charitable giving in Eastern Jackson County, and to expand our services to donors. Lastly, we would be remiss if we did not recognize Nancy Wilhelm for her years of service to the Community Foundation. Nancy played a large part in the Community Foundation making a difference throughout the community. Her service to donors, charities, professional advisors, board members and staff has been greatly appreciated. Cheryl Klotz has assumed Nancy’s role and we are delighted to have her as a new member to our team. With the support of a great staff of dedicated professionals, we look forward to continued success in the coming years. Changes are difficult, but also bring new challenges and opportunities. At Truman

Heartland Community Foundation we take seriously the importance of increasing charitable giving throughout the communities of Eastern Jackson County. We thank you for taking this journey with us.

-Roberta Coker, Chairman of the Board

Community Grants Program Since 1994 your Community Foundation has invited nonprofit organizations serving Eastern Jackson County citizens to submit letters of interest describing a program of importance. Community Foundation Board members, Advisory Board members and participating volunteers spend the summer months reviewing proposals submitted to select the best and most promising investments for our community. Thanks to

generous donors who established Unrestricted Funds in the early years to support future needs of our communities, $162,968 was granted to Eastern Jackson County charities in 2009. In addition, important funding opportunities were shared with Community Foundation donors and their dollars were added to support deserving programs...
