Guatemala succeed again in Men’s Volleyball

MANAGUA, Nicaragua, December 13, 2017. ‐ Guatemala succeeded again on day four of the men’s Volleyball tournament of the XI Central American Games Managua 2017 at Alexis Argüello sport complex.

Guatemala stayed unbeaten after subduing defending champions Honduras 3‐1 (25‐18, 21‐25, 25‐ 20, 25‐17) in their fourth and consecutive victory. Guatemala has a solid position to finish end in with the gold medal with 4‐0 record and 19 points.

El Salvador stands in second place after beating Belize 3‐1 (30‐28, 21‐25, 25‐14, 25‐17) for their third consecutive win on 3‐0 unbeaten record and 12 points.

Costa Rica’s 3‐2 (25‐14, 25‐16, 18‐25, 20‐25, 15‐10) over Panama is enough to be third with 2‐2 record and 8 points.

The schedule on day five starts with El Salvador (3‐0) against Costa Rica (2‐2), followed by Panama (1‐3) facing Honduras (1‐2) and Nicaragua (1‐2) v Belize (0‐3). Guatemala (4‐0) has the day off.

Costa Rica 3, Panama 2 Costa Rica prevailed in 3‐2 (25‐14, 25‐16, 18‐25, 20‐25, 15‐10) over Panama earning their second win to stand in a difficult position. Day four of competition kicked off with Costa Rica’s set back to a persistent group of Panamanian players. Costa Rica’s complications came with Panama’s comeback on line‐up changes, using all their weapons to overcome their 0‐2 set deficit. Costa Rica is in a difficult position of reaching the podium with 2‐2 win loss record and 8 points. This was Panama’s third consecutive match in five sets in four outings; to stand with 1‐3 and 7 points. Costa Rica did better in blocking (10‐6) and Panama in attacking (42‐40); both scored on two aces. The significant margin in error was crucial in Costa Rica’s second victory, while scoring on 51 opponent errors and finishing with 39 of their own. Opposite Esteban Araya led Costa Rica on 14 points of 10 kills and 4 blocks, followed by outside hitters Alberto Blanco and Javier Alvarez with 13 and 12 points apiece. Outside hitter Oswald Marshall led Panama with 14 points all in kills.

El Salvador 3, Belize 1 El Salvador earned their third consecutive victory after beating Belize 3‐1 (30‐28, 21‐25, 25‐14, 25‐ 17). El Salvador had trouble getting into rhythm, recovering from a considerable deficit in sets one and two; their energy finally kicked in while digging several missed attacks against Belize’s

blockers. This is El Salvador’s third consecutive win for a 3‐0 unbeaten record and 12 points; Belize has yet to know victory with 0‐3 and three points. El Salvador only led with a slim 55‐54 margin in kills. Both teams scored on 6 blocks and 1 ace; El Salvador allowed 23 points on unforced errors and Belize 39. Both teams finished with balanced offense. El Salvador’s leading scorers were opposite Carlos Rodriguez with 18 points, setter Franklin Flores with 17 points and outside hitter Rodrigo Chavez with 14 points. Bryton Codd of Belize led all scorers with 24 points on 23 kills and one ace; outside hitter Keith Castillo scored 16 points and opposite Karym Coleman chipped in with 10 points.

It took Guatemala four sets to prevail with a wide 60‐47 margin in kills. The middle part of the match was the most demanding as Honduras pushed on with great rhythm. Guatemala finally remained in control by a change in line‐up that executed their game plan with fewer errors. Guatemala held a 4‐1 advantage in blocking and Honduras a 4‐3 advantage in aces. Both teams committed 28 unforced errors. Guatemala has a solid position to finish end in with the gold medal with 4‐0 record and 19 points. Honduras has 1‐2

record and 5 points. The match developed with a balanced performance on both teams.

Guatemala’s top scorers were Andy Leonardo (15), Wagner Chacon (13) and Erik Flores (10).

Watler Brown topped Honduras with 19 points, William Thompson and German Moreira scored 11 and 12 points respectively.

El Salvador marcha segundo luego de vencer a Belize 3‐1 (30‐28, 21‐25, 25‐14, 25‐17) para su tercer triunfo consecutivo con record invicto 3‐0 y 12 puntos.
