It entitles you, among other things, to the free use of the cable cars as well as numerous leisure activities – as often as you fancy, from the day of arrival to the day of departure.

With this attractive guest card, holidaymakers can look forward to numerous free and discounted leisure attractions and excursion destinations for the duration of their stay in the Pyhrn-Priel holiday region.

The range of offers is varied and ranges from free rides on the regional cable cars to free admission to museums and outdoor swimming pools and participating in guided tours with national park rangers and much more.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ...

The Pyhrn-Priel AktivCard is available from 13 May to 10 October and 23 October to 1 November 2021.

Holidaymakers who spend their holidays in any one of the 180 Pyhrn-Priel AktivCard partner companies – from hotels to inns and guesthouses to privately-owned holiday homes and farms – receive the card free of charge for the duration of their stay.

The Pyhrn-Priel AktivCard and KidsCard are available directly from the hosts or with a fully completed registration form in the local tourism information centre.

The services of the Pyhrn-Priel AktivCard and KidsCard can be used from the day of arrival to the day of departure – as often as you like.

The Pyhrn-Priel AktivKidsCard also offers a special children‘s programme from 1 January 2006 to 1 January 2015.

WURZERALM MOUNTAIN RAILWAYS Get to 1,400 metres above sea level in next to no time with the funicular railway. The circular route “2 million years in 2 hours” leads through the largest lowland moor and highland moor in the Eastern Limestone Alps. Hikers can enjoy a wide variety of plants and flowers before reaching the idyllic Brunnsteiner mountain lake. The Frauenkar railway travels to the beautiful mountain hiking trail and its fascinating Alpine flora. The Wurzeralm is the ideal starting point for both easy-going and challenging mountain hikes.

The 4.5 km single trail that leads from Wurzeralm mountain station through moderately difficult terrain to the funicular railway valley station will set biker hearts beating at a quicker pace. There you can rent everything for bicycles!

Hinterstoder Höss holds much in store for hikers, climbers, mountain bikers and paragliders. The gondola lift takes just a few minutes to reach an altitude of 1,400 metres above sea level.

The Höss Express takes passengers further still up to an altitude of 1,850 metres above sea level where they can enjoy a magnificent view of the Tote Gebirge mountain range. The circular hiking routes, the lakes Speichersee and the “Dachsteinblick” viewing platform are attractive destinations.

WURBAUERKOGEL CHAIRLIFT The chairlift travels from Windischgarsten town center to Wurbauerkogel peak.

A beautiful panoramic view awaits you here. Wurbauerkogel mountain station is the starting point for the summer toboggan run, the bike park and numerous hiking excursions to the Limestone Alps National Park.

Exhibition „Fascination of the Rock“ at the National Park Panorama Tower is now available with a free audio guide in German - English Czech: The exhibition focuses on unusual and noteworthy aspects of the flora and fauna above the forest boundary.

Experience stations en route tell you why there are more butterflies in Kalkalpen National Park than in any other protected environment in Austria and how the mountain world will change during the course of climate change. The viewing terrace of the 21-metre-high tower offers a breath-taking view of the mountain panorama of Windischgarstner valley: Totes Gebirge, Haller Mauern and Sengsengebirge seem close enough to touch.

Unique bird of prey show – experience the ease of flight and meet the kings of birds! In the idyllic Brunnental in Steyrling, falconer Mike Etzelsdorfer presents birds of prey, such as eagles, buzzards and eagle owls, very close to the visitor. Attendants will also learn interesting facts about these animals’ behaviour and their ways of life. After the show you will have the opportunity to have your personal picture taken.

Falconry was entered into the “representative list of immaterial cultural heritage” in 2012. Austria is one of 18 nations where the tradition is still practised.

The exhibition “Wild and Wonderful World of the Woods” will help you lose your fear of the “wild woods” and show you the amazing variety it has to offer.

Visitors may see lynx, deer, badger and fox as well as the “bush telegraphers” of the wild forest down to the tiniest insects among the leaves and beneath the tree bark. Many stations along the way are interactive and encourage you to make your own discoveries.

In the Forest Cinema you will immerse yourself in remote gorges of the Hintergebirge mountain range where black stork, white-backed woodpeckers and lynxes play the leading roles.

KNAPPENHAUS UNTERLAUSSA The museum – a faithful replica of the „Knappenhaus vom Blahberg“ – conveys to visitors the old tradition of mining in the Eisenwurzen. The extraction of raw materials, such as coal and bauxite, is the main theme of the exhibition. Among other things, objects from mining areas in Europe that are up to 4,000 years old, will be shown.

Experience authentic stories told by former miners from the mining settlement Weißwasser in a video presentation. Through a partial mine tunnel, the trail leads „into the open“, where you will find information about the then longest cable car for material transport in Central Europe. On the upper floor, the visitor is led into the glorious past of the Eisenwurzen.

In addition to pieces from the former „Ennsmuseum Kastenreith“ there is plenty of information about the iron industry, trade and crafts from the early days.

The cutlers of Steinbach, working at the Franz Pils & Sons knife factory, continued creating true works of art until 1967.

Often working under the most arduous conditions. Today, the “Cutlers Museum” displays the craftsmanship of the cutlers and blade smiths, their significance to the local population and the development of their settlement on more than 200 m2 of exhibition space.

More than 500 years ago, the blacksmith’s workshop worked for the collegiate church of Spital. From 1808 onwards the factory was used as a tool smithy for waggoners, lumberjacks and farmers.

Andreas Ferdinand Lindemayr crafted the magnificent and widely known latticework in the so-called “Pyhrn Cathedral” from 1728 to 1734 during the renovation of the cathedral in the baroque period.

Stummermühle is the last remaining farm mill with two water wheels and two grinding passes in the Pyhrn-Priel region.

It is located upstream of the scythe factory in Roßleithen on the romantic path to Pießling Origin.

1ST AUSTRIAN POACHER MUSEUM ST. PANKRAZ In the exhibition of the Wilderer Museum, the historical and social background of poaching has been documented as well as the punishments of the game shooters, poachers‘ fates or the legendary poaching battle in Molln. In addition, the kitschy poacher romance is exposed in home movies, novels and songs.

The Wilderer Museum, which is extremely popular with both holidaymakers and excursion guests, closed its doors at the site in St. Pankraz in October 2020.

However, fortunately there is also good news - the exclusive and unique collection remains to be seen in the holiday region Pyhrn-Priel!

The opening of the WILDERER MUSEUM with an updated and modern exhibition in the district of Pichl in the municipality of Roßleithen is planned for the summer of 2022.

In addition, a „Wilderer Shop“ with a wide range of regional game specialities will complement the offer for visitors at this new location, resulting in a perfect combination of cultural history, cuisine and hiking, as the poacher‘s trails in Rossleithen and Vorderstoder also take up many topics.

GUIDED TOUR OF WINDISCHGARSTEN PARISH CHURCH

The tour, which lasts about 1 hour, starts at the tourist information office and leads through the former district court (inner courtyard, old prison cell), the Hauenschild monument, the middle school, the church park and the market square to the local museum.

The parish church “St. Jakob Windischgarsten” was consecrated on 14 August 1462. Throughout the centuries it has been subjected to many changes. The last ones were a major indoor renovation in 1992 and the reconstruction of the entire church spire in 2019.

During this „cultural walk“ through the historic market of Windischgarsten you will get a lot of interesting information about the history of the place, sights and the economic development.

The altars and pulpit, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary as a chapel of worship, the organ, the Schoiswohl Cross and, outside of the church, the Palm Path, the Lourdes Grotto and the War Memorial are all especially worth seeing.

Bishop Otto II of Bamberg founded the Hospital am Pyhrn in the year 1190. The hospital was converted into a collegiate convent for worldly canons in 1418. It was the start of a magnificent cultural development. Bring your loved ones - enjoy the mountain panorama, visit the llama herd and feel the soft, cuddly Alpaca wool hand-spun by breeder Elisabeth Nieskens.

Our sheep and lambs are very trusting, and they like to be fed and touched.

Amid beautiful nature there is a lot of useful and exciting facts to learn about animals and milk.

With many interesting activities - e.g. milking rubber udders, milk tasting, butter shaking and tasting with farmhouse bread, tinkering or solving puzzles – the children learn a lot about the very special food, milk.

The aim of forest and hunting pedagogy is to let children study and discover the relationships in nature in a playful way in the middle of the forest instead of at school.

It promotes a better understanding for the protection and care of the forest through direct encounters with the forest and its inhabitants! Children learn to love and respect their environment.

Experience the forest with all your senses: feel the wood, maybe even feel the forest floor barefoot, listen to the birdsong, look under the tree bark with a magnifying glass and much more.

Lake Gleinkersee, an enchanting lake in the alpine foothills, is just the right place to take a deep breath and let yourself go. The lake is surrounded by sumptuous green pastures and healthy forests - an idyllic location that is one of a kind. A well-maintained sunbathing meadow with piers and children’s play areas invite young and old to enjoy a swim.

Things to discover apart from the circular hiking route include alpine huts, mountain summits and the Piessling Origin. And what could be lovelier than enjoying culinary delicacies on the sun terrace or chestnut tree garden at the Seebauer Inn directly next to the lake.

BIKE & FLY The bike park at Wurbauerkogel features 4 routes with varying difficulty levels that will quicken the pulse of bikers, be they families or professionals. Bikes are available to hire from the bike centre at the valley station.

The 4.5 km long single trail on Wurzeralm runs from an altitude of 1,400m through mediumdifficulty terrain back down to the funicular railway station in the valley, where also the bike rental centre of Intersport Pachleitner is located.

Mountain bikers can take the railway conveniently from Hinterstoder and return to the valley via a dedicated bike trail.

Paragliders in Hinterstoder can enjoy a breath-taking panorama during their flight.

High rope rock course The “Hexenkessel” (Witch’s Cauldron) rock high ropes course takes you criss-cross across an impressive white-water canyon. Following a short ascent via hiking trails we are ready to go: We stand in awe before the first steel cable about 40 m above the sometimes very narrow ravine.

Clink in the pulley - and off you go! You reach the other “shoreline” with a feeling close to weightlessness.

The view downwards is gigantic.

Trained guides take us via well-secured climbing points and zip lines of up to 190 m in length to the spectacular Hexenkessel, a 15 m high waterfall that tumbles down the rock into a deep cauldron.

That’s all we’re giving away but you can bet on a bucket-full of adrenalin on this adventure!

An alpine pasture is not a petting zoo. Therefore, always stay on the hiking track and walk calmly and inconspicuously in a distance past the grazing animals. Do not pet or feed young calves – this could provoke the mothers.

If you are accompanied by your dog, bypass open pastures as far as possible and keep the dog on a leash. If a cow still seems to be preparing for an attack take your dog off the leash immediately.

If individual animals or the entire herd are showing threatening gestures (lowered head, scurrying, roaring, snorting), slowly leave the pasture without turning your back on them. Only in an absolute emergency you should give the animals a targeted blow to the nose with the walking stick.

KALKALPEN NATIONAL PARK The Kalkalpen National Park in the Sengsen mountains and the Reichraminger Hintergebirge protects the largest forest wilderness in the heart of Austria. It belongs to the premier class of the protected areas in the Alps and has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Pyhrn-Priel region is proud that this natural jewel is located here in the southeast of Upper Austria. The internationally recognised protected area provides a habitat for animals and plants that are hardly found elsewhere, such as lynx, white-backed woodpecker, peregrine falcon, Alpine beetle and rare orchids.
