Welcome to the third issue of JUP Magazine.
Ernest Hemingway once said that to write well, one must first live fully. At JUP, we believe this principle extends beyond writing - it informs how we shape our homes and engage with the world.
Creating this magazine allows us to share our interpretation of the JUP lifestyle and showcase the interests we believe resonate with those who choose Jupiter - of all places - to call home.
We hope this issue sparks conversation and inspires you to explore more - about life, travel, conservation, and the unmatched beauty of Jupiter, as well as the adventures that await beyond its shores. This is the life we celebrate.
With our best wishes,

Blowing Rocks Preserve, spanning 73 acres of meticulously restored native vegetation, stands as a testament to conservation. Rather than developing this land for homes on Jupiter Island, The Nature Conservancy has safeguarded it as a legacy of preservation. This allows everyone in the community to experience Florida's stunning coastline in its most natural state - a treasure that is truly priceless.
The unmistakable Anastasia limestone shoreline at Blowing Rocks Preserve. JUPITER GEMS
BY RACHEL ROWNEY & NIKKO KARKI
Tucked along the scenic shores of Jupiter, The Blowing Rocks Preserve is a place of incredible natural beauty. This unique barrier island - right on Jupiter’s doorstepgives visitors and locals a chance to connect with Florida's wild side, while playing an active role in preserving it.
Blowing Rocks Preserve is just one of the many places of outstanding natural beauty in the region. Managed by The Nature Conservancy, this sanctuary is home to striking limestone formations, diverse flora and fauna, and coastal wildlife. The preserve gets its name from bursts of saltwater that shoot up to 50 feet from the limestone rocks at high tide.
In an exclusive conversation with JUP, Cristin Krasco, Preserve Manager of Blowing Rocks Preserve, shares how it balances welcoming visitors with its mission of protecting these precious habitats.
What is The Nature Conservancy?
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a global environmental nonprofit working to create a world where people and nature can thrive. Our mission is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends.
How do you balance visitors with the need to protect these sensitive habitats? We provide protected access to Blowing Rocks Preserve's sensitive habitats through elevated boardwalks - such as our accessible Mangrove Boardwalk that takes visitors through a mangrove forest to Indian River Lagoon - and short trails and scenic walks through our dunes, lagoon, and beach. Visitors can also experience a native habitat through our Pollinator Garden Scenic Walk. We know that by educating our visitors, they will value and protect nature.
What can visitors expect at Blowing Rocks Preserve?
Visitors can expect to experience natural Florida, including native plants and wildlife along our beach, coastal forests, and shoreline. Activities include swimming and snorkeling at the beach and wildlife observation on our three hiking trails.
What makes this preserve unique compared to other nature reserves in Florida?
Blowing Rocks Preserve was named for its rocky Anastasia limestone shoreline. At high tide when the sea is rough, the sea breaks against the rocks and forces plumes of saltwater up to 50 feet skyward. Hence, 'blowing rocks'. Anastasia limestone extends along Florida’s coast from St. Augustine to Boca Raton, and Blowing Rocks Preserve harbors the largest outcropping on the US Atlantic coast. The land here might have once been part of an exposed sand ridge or the top of a reef, resulting in a limestone outcrop that is higher than surrounding areas.
What are some of the key sustainability practices in place at the Blowing Rocks Preserve?
We partner with the Beach Bucket Foundation to provide 'Box O’ Buckets' clean-up stations that offer beachlovers a chance to turn the tide on marine pollution. Visitors can grab a beach bucket and collect litter they see on the beach and other public areas. Then, they return their bucket to the kiosk near the beach entrance.
What roles do native plants and coastal ecosystems play in supporting the local environment?
Native plants support native wildlife. Coastal species are all connected in a delicate balance. For example, mangroves provide ideal hunting and hiding habitat for hermit crabs and other crustaceans, which are a food source for birds like great blue heron and mammals like raccoons and bobcats. Without native plants, native wildlife misses a key resource. Mangroves also help coastal ecosystems stay strong, holding sand in place as seas rise and during hurricane and high tide events.
Could you share more about the work being done to protect endangered species and habitats within the Blowing Rocks Preserve?
TNC's Blowing Rocks Preserve monitors species like birds, sea turtles, and other reptiles. Our contributions inform studies that ultimately impact conservation efforts. We also grow native plants in our nursery with the help of our volunteers. These native plants, including various species of mangroves, are shared with community partners so they may be planted across Florida's southeast coast.
Mangroves filtering saltwater into freshwater, protecting our shores and purifying our waters. NATURAL MANGROVES
Blowing Rocks Preserve hosts several events throughout the year, and supports local partners at community events. At the preserve, there are several ways to contribute to preservation efforts, including:
• Identifying species with the iNaturalist app. Visitors can join the scientific community by downloading the iNaturalist app and submitting photos of plants or wildlife observed during their visit to the project. Visitors can also earn badges as a student of nature on the Seek app.
• Documenting changes to the shorelines and beach dune habitat at our Chronolog Station near the Dune Trail.
• Having the latest information about volunteering, educational opportunities, programs and activities sent to your email inbox, people can also subscribe to TNC’s Center for Conservation Initiatives (CCI) e-newsletter.
Blowing Rocks Preserve is a beautiful destination, but it's also a place where visitors and the local community can celebrate Florida's coastal habitat and learn how to protect it. Through hands-on conservation efforts, educational programs, and volunteer opportunities, the preserve encourages a connection between people and nature.

One doesn't have to travel far to see incredible wildlife. This crowd sourced article showcases the wildlife we share Jupiter’s waterways with - as captured by local photographers.

"The diversity of wildlife in Jupiter is incredible. The landscape here offers the thrill of the unknown - you never know what might appear.
Photographing the ecosystem and its inhabitants is truly special, as Jupiter is one of a kind. Here, a scalloped hammerhead cruises past the shore."
"I captured this around the Jupiter Island area. I’ve seen a lot of rays in my years of flying drones, but this shot stood out because of the various colors of these eagle rays. This is a mother and father ray with a juvenile.
Because of this photo, I had to do some research, and I learned that eagle rays can adjust their color to adjust to their environment. Juvenile rays' spots become more pronounced as they age."
"I took these images with my drone off the beach at Coral Cove in Jupiter. The sawfish was swimming slowly in very shallow water about 20 ft or less right off the beach.
Since the smalltooth sawfish is highly endangered, I immediately reported it to the Florida Fish and Wildlife."

"North Atlantic right whales had been spotted around our area - I had seen a video on social media from the day before. I didn't know where it was taken, only knew it was off the coast of Jupiter somewhere. When I got to Jupiter Beach Park, I immediately noticed the presence of all the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office boats
in the water. I decided to fly over the scene and check out what was going on, to my surprise it was the North Atlantic right whale from Instagram! I started filming footage of the mother and calf playing in the water."

It was once just a quiet village, beloved by retirees seeking a peaceful piece of paradise. But the Tequesta of today is emerging as one of Florida's most coveted real estate gems, attracting young families eager to set down roots. To take a closer look, JUP delves into the allure of Tequesta.
BY RACHEL ROWNEY
Nestled along the Loxahatchee River and surrounded by water on three sides, Tequesta offers a unique blend of natural beauty and small-town charm. Impeccably manicured neighborhoods feature tree-lined streets and sidewalks perfect for morning strolls, all without the high homeowners association fees typically found in gated communities. The village’s controlled development ensures the small-town feel endures for generations to come.
Tequesta has several restrictions that limit significant development and large chain stores, enabling small businesses and boutiques to thrive. The focus on community has cultivated a close-knit atmosphere where families flourish. Residents love the walkability, which is rare in Florida, with locally-owned coffee shops, restaurants, art galleries, and boutique shops all within a golf cart ride from home. You won't find any national restaurant chains herethey're prohibited by the council - but what you will find are independently owned and operated establishments
where the emphasis is on quality and maintaining personal relationships within the community.
For boating enthusiasts, Tequesta is nothing short of paradise. The village boasts an abundance of waterfront homes and numerous canals, making it ideal for avid boaters. Almost all land lots also have space for a boat trailer on the side of the house, concealed behind a fence. With access to multiple community boat ramps, homeowners can keep a boat on their property without incurring expensive storage fees. This convenience, combined with the waterway location, makes spontaneous weekend trips on the water a regular pastime.
At first glance, one might mistake Tequesta for a gated community. Its tree-lined streets and sense of community exude a tangible charm. Yet, without hefty HOA fees, residents here enjoy that same family-friendly environment - without the extra monthly expense.
Most homes are single-story ranchers built between the 1970s and 1980s. While many of these have been tastefully remodeled or expanded, others have been replaced with new constructions, especially along the water and golf courses, reshaping Tequesta.
Florida is famous for its array of golf courses, and Tequesta is home to the esteemed Tequesta Country Club. Complete with an 18-hole golf course, the club has established itself as a social hub. Beyond golf, it offers pickleball and tennis courts, as well as an active social calendar within
its clubhouse. Currently undergoing discussions to possibly enhance its offerings, the club is feeling the pressure between remaining the same or evolving into something new. Whatever happens, we are sure the club will continue to grow in popularity with the rest of the area.
In recent years, Tequesta has seen a surge in popularity among families seeking a safe, beautiful place to raise their children. Enriching weekend activities are abundant - think oceanfront parks, beaches, and nature trails. For kids, it's hard to imagine a better place to grow up.
The element of independent restaurants, cafes, and a vibrant local art and yoga scene is unique to south Florida. The absence of chains means that every experience is unique, and the higher caliber of these establishments adds to the appeal and enjoyment of supporting locally owned businesses.
Tequesta's popularity shows no signs of slowing down. As more families discover the unparalleled quality of life Tequesta offers, the village is poised to continue its evolution from a peaceful retreat to a vibrant community that still retains its small-town soul.
In Tequesta, life moves at a pace that allows you to savor each moment. It's a place where neighbors know each other by name, local businesses are family-owned, and the beauty of nature is always just a step away.
If you're looking to embrace a lifestyle that values community, authenticity, and the simple pleasures of coastal living, Tequesta might just be worth a closer look.

Where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Indian River at the foot of the historic Jupiter Lighthouse. IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
BY NIKKO KARKI
In the heart of Jupiter's community, two organizations stand as pillars of wildlife conservation and education: the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary and the Loggerhead Marinelife Center. These places are more than just rehabilitation centers; they play an integral role in nurturing respect for Florida's native species. As a family raising two ocean-loving daughters in Jupiter, visiting these centers has become a tradition where we feel a connection to the animals that share our area.
Busch Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for injured and orphaned animals native to Florida. It was established with a mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and release wildlife back into their natural environment. Walking through the sanctuary's nature trails feels like stepping into a living classroom. My daughters and I have marveled at Florida panthers, black bears, and bald eagles, learning about the challenges they face in the wild and how conservation efforts can help them.
The sanctuary's educational programs are designed to engage young minds. Children can take part in wildlife workshops, summer camps, and special events like animal feedings - all aimed at creating a lifelong connection to nature. Whether we have an hour or a few to spare, the sanctuary is a place we return to time and again, each visit deepening our appreciation for the incredible work being done - right here in our community.
The Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach is a renowned sea turtle hospital dedicated to the conservation of ocean ecosystems. Specializing in the rehabilitation of injured and sick sea turtles, the center offers advanced medical care, as well as education to the general public. Its central location makes it an ideal stop after school or even as a weekend activity with the kids.
Every visit gives us a chance to check in on the turtles undergoing rehabilitation. The volunteers are always happy to share the latest updates on a turtle's healing process. The center features interactive exhibits that educate visitors about sea turtle biology, ocean conservation, and the effects of human activity on marine life. You can also witness sea turtle nesting and hatching - unforgettable experiences that underscore the fragility of these incredible species that shares our coastline and waters.
"Jupiter
can see the important work taking place - right in our backyard. "
CHARLIE & TRUFFLE
Charlie the Florida panther and Truffle the green turtle remind us of our wild neighbors.
These centers are more than attractions - they’re essential resources for raising environmentally conscious children. By directly engaging with wildlife, kids develop empathy and a sense of responsibility toward all living creatures.
Our girls are continually inspired by the wildlife they encounter, and the ease of visiting these centers makes them a regular part of our lives. They’re growing up with a conservation ethos and gaining firsthand experiences, thanks to these local organizations, their patrons, and dedicated volunteers.
Visit: Regular visits help fund the centers so they can continue their valuable work and provide vital education to the community. You can also take part in workshops, camps, and special events throughout the year.
Volunteer: Both centers welcome volunteers for different roles, from assisting with animal care to supporting educational programs. It's a rewarding way for families to contribute together.
Donations: Financial contributions support medical treatments, facility improvements, and conservation initiatives. Why not consider sponsoring an animal or a specific program?
Adoption programs: You can symbolically adopt a sea turtle or sanctuary animal to provide direct support for their care, all while receiving updates and information about your adoptee.

Imagine a sun-soaked morning on Jupiter's pristine beaches - the soft sand beneath your feet and the soothing sound of waves gently rolling in. In this tranquil setting lies a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered: fossilized shark teeth. This pastime isn't just about finding ancient treasures, it's a therapeutic way to connect to the natural wonders of our coastal town.
Shark tooth hunting is more than a hobby in Jupiter - it's a cherished tradition. The shores of Jupiter and Juno Beach are renowned for the abundance of these ancient relics that wash up with the tides. Each tooth tells a story millions of years in the making.
There's something profoundly calming about strolling along the shoreline, looking at the colorful tapestry of shells and sand at your feet. For me, shark tooth hunting has become a form of mindfulness - a way to disconnect from daily stresses and immerse myself in the present moment. The repetitive motion, the fresh sea breeze, and the warmth of the sun create a meditative experience.
The simple act of searching takes patience and focus. It's a quiet pursuit that allows your mind to wander and reflect, all while enjoying the natural environment. One of the greatest joys of this pastime is sharing it with my family. Our daughters have become enthusiastic little hunters, and they get so excited when they spot a tooth in the sand.
These outings have become cherished family traditions. Together, we explore different areas of the beach, comparing our finds and celebrating each new addition to our collection. It's a wonderful way to teach our children about the ocean and the creatures that once swam there.
It's also a healthy outdoor activity that encourages you to get outside. Whether you're walking alone lost in thought or engaging in friendly competition with friends, it's an enjoyable way to spend time by the water.
The next time you find yourself drawn to the shoreline, consider taking a moment to scan the sands for these hidden gems. There's a world of ancient treasures waiting to be found beneath your toes. You might be surprised by what you discover.
Time your search: The best times are typically after high tide or following a storm when new deposits are left on the shore.
Focus on shell beds: Areas where shells and debris accumulate are prime spots for finding teeth.
Train your eyes: Look for the distinctive triangular shape and dark coloration that stand out against the sand.
Be patient: It may take some time to find your first tooth, but persistence pays off!
Happy hunting!
When you look around at all that Jupiter has to offer right now, you can't help but marvel at its incredible independent restaurant scene. Narrowing down a list of just ten shout outs is no easy task. Here are a few spots we love, in no particular order, that all offer something special to the community.
We love celebrating Jupiter's vibrant independent restaurant scene and are always eager to discover new favorites. If you have any recommendations or think we've missed a spot that deserves a mention, we'd love to hear from you!
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Simply the best in terms of friendly staff that knows you by name, world-class flavors, and an ambiance unequaled in the area.
A thoroughly entertaining dining experience - from flavors to service and venue. We love Blackbird for double dates or when friends are visiting town.
A trip to Stockholm would have less Swedishness. We love the tasting menu, the service, and the ambiance. Mycket bra!
An irresistible option for both dine-in and delivery. Enjoy Japanese and Thai cuisine at the same time, pairing equally well with a bottle of red wine or sake.
Benchmark Italian food that is so consistently good that it's where we go for pizza and pasta cravings. They also do incredible fish and meat specials.
For lunch on the move in Tequesta, meeting up with a friend and getting our taco fix, there is no place better.
With the nicest team running the place and meals that satisfy any appetite, "made with love" is an understatement.
Juno's best spot for breakfast tacos and banana peanut butter smoothies with a dose of good humor and community vibes to feed the soul.
An unbeatable start to the day for us is to wake up and go to Perk for the finest coffee in the area. A great place to meet up with friends in the neighborhood.
A new staple in Tequesta, offering homemade pasta to go, amazing sandwiches, cold cuts, and imported delicacies from Italy. We are big fans!

What do you get when two young girls in Jupiter set up a lemonade stand with a little extra sparkle? Unicorn Lemonade - a bright, whimsical take on the classic neighborhood stand that's all about spreading joy and giving back.
Unicorn Lemonade is lemonade with a twist. Freshly squeezed lemons, water, honey, and a touch of edible glitter give each cup a colorful, magical glow that’s as charming as its name.
Our daughters came up with the idea one day as a way to get creative and raise some money for good causes. Since the first set up, they've been joined by friends and other volunteers and the concept has grown! The stand is about more than just refreshment - it's a platform for enthusiastic and enterprising young volunteers to learn teamwork, customer service, and even the basics of running a small business, all while raising money for local charities.
Every dollar raised goes to a good cause, with supplies donated by the Unicorn Lemonade 'family'.
For our kids and the ones who volunteer with them, it's a chance to be part of something bigger, proving that even small efforts can have a meaningful impact. For customers, it's a reminder of the simple joy a lemonade stand and some young smiles can bring, especially when paired with a sprinkle of magic.
Unicorn Lemonade has become a feel-good tradition that connects people, spreads kindness, and helps support the community one cup at a time. Look out for the stand next time you are driving around - if you’re lucky you can grab a cup of magic too.
Want to support Unicorn Lemonade's magical mission?
Whether you're interested in helping spread the word or would like an invite for the next time the stand is open, we'd be delighted to hear from you.

Photographer Anton Sucksdorff is known for work that captures the essence of his subjects, whether a world-class dish of food or a striking architectural space. He tells JUP about his process and shares insights on some of his photographic projects.
Born in Finland, Anton Sucksdorff's journey into photography started as a small child by capturing everyday life and elements with his family's point-and-shoot camera. Before launching his own studio, Anton first studied photography at the University for the Creative Arts in England and then assisted renowned photographers Nick Knight and Rankin in London.
Anton's portfolio showcases his diverse range of work, from intimate portraits to detailed food photography. His approach to photographing spaces, whether residential or commercial, reflects his belief that every location holds a unique soul. "A home has a personality, much like a person," he
says. "I aim to tell a story - what is the vibe, the light, and the materials that shape the experience of that space?"
Fifteen feet under the sea in Norway, you will find one of the most captivating dining experiences in the world: Restaurant Under.
Conveying this experience in a photograph starts with moving through it like a guest, translating the human experience to the camera lens. "Restaurant Under was like nothing I've ever seen or experienced before," says Anton.
"When photographing a space like this, it's important to first observe it and feel its atmosphere. Once
you have an understanding of your surroundings, you can properly start to shoot and portray it the way you understand it."
One of Anton's most notable photographic projects was Restaurant Savoy. Recently renovated by British interior designer Ilse Crawford of STUDIOILSE, Anton documented a year-long culinary journey, capturing both the exquisite details of the hand-crafted dishes and the luxurious ambiance of the space.
"The food and the environment are always intertwined; it's about encapsulating the complete experience for guests," Anton notes.
"You can tell the story about a place and express that in a photograph. It's all about capturing its essence ."
As longtime friends of Anton's who have followed his photographic journey since our teenage years, we are inspired by the possibility of seeing Jupiter's exceptional homes, yachts, and restaurants through his lens. His ability to capture the essence of a place could profoundly elevate how we present projects deserving special attention to the world.
Imagine Jupiter's stunning waterfront properties photographed by Anton - his keen eye highlighting the interplay of natural light with architectural elements, bringing out the unique character of each home. His photographs could tell the stories of these spaces in a way that standard imagery simply can't match.
Jupiter's vibrant culinary scene could also benefit from Anton's expertise in food photography. He doesn't just capture dishes; he encapsulates the entire dining experience. "The food, the setting, the atmosphere - they all contribute to the story," Anton says. His images could entice diners by conveying the true flavor and ambiance of our local eateries.
In the yachting world, whether here in Jupiter or further afield, Anton's experience with capturing luxury spaces could bring a new dimension to yacht photography. His attention to detail and ability to portray elegance and craftsmanship would resonate with discerning clients and enthusiasts alike. "Yachts are like floating pieces of art," he muses. "Photographing them requires an understanding of design, functionality, and the emotions they evoke."
The Savoy interior was designed by architects Aino and Alvar Aalto who brought their human-centred and functional touch to every detail in the restaurant. Opening in June 1937, the restaurant was re-designed in 2020 by Ilse Crawford and STUDIOISLE and renovated in cooperation with Artek, Helsinki City Museum and the Alvar Aalto Foundation. Photography by Anton Sucksdorff.
In a market where visual presentation is everything, engaging photographers of Anton's caliber could set a new benchmark for quality in Jupiter. His work inspires us to strive for higher standards when showcasing design projects. It's about investing in excellence to truly capture the uniqueness of what we have to offer.
"The right photograph can make you feel something," Anton explains. "It can make you fall in love with a place before you've even stepped foot in it." This is the transformative power that could redefine how properties and businesses are perceived in our community.
We're excited about the potential of inviting Anton to collaborate on projects here in Jupiter. His global perspective, combined with a deep appreciation for capturing the soul of a subject, aligns perfectly with our vision for elevating the portrayal of
our town's most exceptional spaces. For homeowners, restaurateurs, and yacht owners looking to present their offerings in the best possible light, Anton's artistry could be the key to standing out in a crowded market. His approach goes beyond mere documentation; it's about storytelling and creating an emotional connection with the viewer.
Investing in top-tier photography is not just about aesthetics; it's about honoring the craftsmanship and design that goes into these projects. It's about telling a story that resonates and leaves a lasting impression.
Anton’s unique eye captures the essence of every subject he photographs. If you're interested in bringing his artistry to a project in Jupiter or elsewhere, we'd be happy to connect you.

"Honey Fitz served five US Presidents and soon became an icon of the twentieth
century."
BY RACHEL ROWNEY
Restoring a yacht is a rare opportunity to revive a vessel’s legacy, but how do you approach redesigning one steeped in such remarkable history? Honey Fitz served five US Presidents and soon became an icon of the twentieth century. Now fresh from a comprehensive redesign project, she's once again ready to welcome guests.
Originally launched in 1931 for American businessman Sewell Avery, the superyacht Honey Fitz is known for hosting Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon. But she is most famously associated with John F. Kennedy in the 1960s, when the yacht became a retreat for him and his family throughout his time in office.
Following decades of slow decline, entrepreneur Charles Modica came across Honey Fitz in 2020 and saw the potential in restoring a piece of history. Over the past four years he and his team have brought Honey Fitz back to what her calls her "Camelot" era splendor. "I encountered the vessel when she was scheduled to be docked and based at Pelican Club," he says. "The previous owners were unsure about managing her without doing a complete restoration. We chose to buy her and move forward, believing it would be a valuable investment."
Restoring Honey Fitz to former
Greg Albritton, the yacht's captain for over a decade, recalls seeing Honey Fitz as a child: "I was born and raised in West Palm Beach. During the early 1960s, Honey Fitz could be seen docked at the US Coast Guard station on Peanut Island or cruising the area with the President. We actually have pictures of the Honey Fitz with JFK and Jackie on board."
Modica and Albritton enlisted Brad London with his company, Total Refit LLC, to assemble a team of Florida's finest yacht craftsmen for the four-year project. Design veteran Jack Phillips was also brought in to replicate furnishings and decor of the Kennedy era. To ensure the refreshed Honey Fitz stayed true to her history, first mate Katelyn Kiefer worked closely with the United States Archives and the John F. Kennedy Museum to replicate the interior and exteriors of the historic vessel. "We used every picture available to ensure that all details of the restoration were exact," says Albritton. You can still find historical functioning parts from the '30s, World War II and the ensuing presidential eras between 1945 to 1971 on board.
Both Albritton and Modica were committed to bringing the vessel back to her presidential glory. "The design inspiration came when I saw original photos of the vessel's former beauty, which featured glamorous events and occasions hosted by several former US presidents, with their families and guests in attendance," says Modica. "We wanted to preserve and honor that in the most faithful way." From the master bedroom to the salon, every detail was carefully restored.
Then and now. The deck area has been faithfully restored to the sitting configuration favored by JFK.
A taste of the interiors - lovingly restored to former glory with the utmost attention to detail.
" Honey Fitz was built when yachting was experimenting with new hull designs and technology to increase speed in large private yachts using diesel power," Albritton says. "She served as a submarine patrol vessel for the US Coast Guard during World War II, and as the presidential yacht for five presidents. All of these are great aspects of the yacht's history, so being part of her restoration and being captain is very special."
The lengthy project has brought much joy to Albritton and Modica, but also the president's family. Modica says that seeing the Kennedy family on board this past Fourth of July was particularly meaningful: "They took a special cruise from Hyannis Port and were moved beyond their expectations with the level of restoration."

On our recent family trip to Italy, we decided to take a detour that led us to discover a different side of the country. Forte dei Marmi, a charming seaside town on the Tuscan coast, beckoned us with promises of "La Dolce Vita". What we found was an unforgettable blend of world-class dining, authentic Italian culture, and the impeccable hospitality of the Bocelli family.
Our Italian adventure began in Sardinia, where we spent our days exploring stunning coastlines and sailing the crystal waters. But the draw of our next stop - Forte dei Marmi - was its reputation for incredible food, its rich music scene, and its classic Italian culture. And we were not disappointed.
Our curiosity was rewarded upon arriving at Alpemare, the Bocelli family's exquisite beach club. From the moment we stepped in, it was clear that this was no ordinary seaside spot. Impeccably appointed cabanas lined the shore, each offering a private oasis to savor the beachside ambiance with attentive service and all the luxury amenities you could want.
La Dolce Vita with the Bocelli's
What truly set Alpemare apart was the culinary experience. Guests can order an incredible array of delicacies right from the private cabana - it all felt decadently indulgent. We enjoyed fresh Nobu sushi right on the beach. It was the Italian dishes, however, that stole the show - each one worthy of a Michelin star. Fresh, flavorful, and artfully presented, the food was just unbelievably good.
Our gastronomic journey didn't stop at Alpemare. Forte dei Marmi is renowned for having one of the highest concentrations of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. We ventured into the town to experience the culinary scene, enjoying meals at the array of incredible restaurants, serving everything from traditional Italian dishes to avant-garde modern cuisine.
But it wasn't just about the food. The atmosphere of Forte dei Marmi is something to behold. Evenings were filled with strolls through cobblestone streets, gelato in hand, as the town buzzed with life.
Top: Owners Veronica Berti and Andrea Bocelli enjoying life at Alpemare Beach Club.
Bottom: An inviting lounge space at Alpemare, an oasis of hospitality in Forte Dei Marmi.
The Bocelli family's knack for infusing quality into everything they do was evident not just at Alpemare but also in their guest house, Villa Butterfly. We were fortunate to stay there, and it felt like stepping into a luxurious yet welcoming home. Each room was thoughtfully designed, blending elegance with comfort. The attention to detail from the linens to the artwork, all reflected a deep appreciation for hospitality.
Adding to the magic was the vibrant music scene. We were fortunate to catch a performance at the Festival La Versiliana, an open-air concert series that brings renowned artists to the Tuscan coast. On my birthday, no less, we enjoyed a concert by a dear friend, making the experience all the more special.
For those of us from Jupiter who love to travel, Forte dei Marmi
offers a slice of Italian life that's both authentic and accessible. It's not just a destination; it's an amazing way to experience the best of Italian culture, incredible food, and the joy of living well. The town captures the essence of La Dolce Vita .
If your travels lead you to Italy, consider venturing off the beaten path to discover the charm of Forte dei Marmi. From the exquisite Alpemare Beach Club to the Bocelli family's warm hospitality, it's an experience not to be missed..

Searching for the deepest emerald blues in pristine Maldivian atolls. BEYOND THE HORIZON
BY NIKKO KARKI
JUP's Nikko Karki had the chance this summer to explore the Maldives from an entirely new vantage - aboard luxury explorer yacht, Galileo. Blending the freedom of the open ocean, unparalleled privacy, luxury and adventure, Nikko reveals why Galileo is the ultimate platform for a lifeaffirming escape.
The Maldives. Even the name conjures images of turquoise waters, swaying palm trees, and soft white sands. So, when the opportunity arose to experience it in the most exclusive way possible, aboard the 55-meter (180 ft) explorer yacht Galileo , I didn’t hesitate. Thanks to the wonder of the Qsuite business class on Qatar Airways, it was an extremely comfortable and seamless journey from Miami to Doha to Malé, the colorful capital of the Maldives. Here, I was met by the tender, and within moments, I was on board Galileo - the striking, expedition-ready yacht that would be my home for the next 10 nights.
Galileo immediately feels like a sanctuary on the sea. The yacht’s sleek lines and understated elegance are matched by a crew of twelve who make it feel like a home away from home and bring the vessel to life. Not only did they ensure that each guest was looked after completely, but their enthusiasm and expertise - whether for surfing, diving, or fishing - made the journey feel more like a tailored adventure. Each crew member contributed to making it a truly personalized experience.
It was clear from the start that this was a yacht for those who love life on the water. The chef, a surfer himself, not only prepared meals with passion but often seemed to craft something even more extraordinary on the days he had a chance to ride the waves. Dining aboard Galileo quickly became a highlight of the day, as the meals - crafted from the freshest local ingredients - were consistently exceptional.
Sleeping up to 12 guests in five ensuite cabins, Galileo is in spectacular condition following a 2023 refit - the ideal platform for exploring the furthest reaches of the Indian Ocean and beyond.
Galileo is a true explorer yacht, capable of crossing the Atlantic four times without refueling. Quiet and stable at sea, she excels at long passages.
Over the course of ten nights on board, we covered a distance of 750 miles, navigating the iconic atolls and their surrounding lagoons. Each day presented new, breathtaking views. During the trip, we anchored at Four Seasons Kuda
Huraa, Six Senses Laamu, and COMO Maalifushi - each renowned luxury resorts, with epic surfbreaks close by.
Ultimately, it was the freedom to explore that truly set this voyage apart. This wasn’t about adhering to a schedule; it was about crafting a dynamic adventure that responded to the ever-changing conditions around us to chase the swells according to the rhythms of the ocean.
Ten years ago, 83.5 m (274 ft) Savannah revolutionized the yachting world with her imaginative design and trailblazing technology. Looking back on a decade of extraordinary journeys, we honor her legacy and the visionary leadership that set her course.
BY NIKKO KARKI, RACHEL ROWNEY & ANGELA AUDRETSCH
" Savannah 's owner was a visionary who believed in empowering those around him to achieve his dream."
As with all groundbreaking yachts, Savannah 's story begins with an owner’s dream. From her iconic silhouette to her forward-thinking systems - her design challenged preconceived notions of what could be found on board a yacht.
Savannah 's owner was a visionary who believed in empowering those around him to achieve his dream. He took his years of leadership experience, honed in the business world, and applied the simple principle of trust to the creation and operation of the yacht. As Savannah 's captain Chris Durham recalls: "He didn’t just lead us - he inspired us. The owner's approach was all about empowering each of us to rise to the occasion and excel. He trusted us to bring his vision to life, and it's that trust that allowed us to exceed expectations and create something extraordinary together. Savannah is more than a yacht; she's a symbol of what happens when people are given the freedom to perform at their best, to be part of something truly special." By emboldening the designers, shipyard, and crew, he cultivated a masterpiece that remains instantly recognizable and revered nearly a decade later.
The owner turned to designers Cristina Gherardi Benardeau and Marcello Bozzarelli of CG Design in Paris to create a superyacht that broke the mold. Almost everything about Savannah set new standards in yacht design: her unique profile, striking metallic-painted exterior and extensive use of glass. From her innovative Nemo underwater observation lounge and infinity pool, to her double-height video-walled passage with custom graphics and sweeping deck spaces, Savannah is an icon that has captured the hearts of yacht lovers around the world.
By giving the designers creative freedom, the owner ensured that Savannah would not only be groundbreaking, but stand the test of time - a blend that many others have tried to achieve but rarely so successfully.
The owner's collaboration with Feadship, one of the world's premier shipyards, underscored his commitment to excellence.
Taking one of Feadship's 'future concept' designs as a starting point, he elevated it even further to create
the world's first hybrid superyacht. Empowering the shipyard to push technological boundaries, Savannah isn't just aesthetically impressive. Her diesel-electric propulsion was ahead of its time when launched by Feadship - the first ever diesel-
electric concept - and she set the tone for technologically-advanced, fuel-efficient yachts delivered in her wake. And also for more conscious cruising.
The battery technology on board, for example, allows Savannah to cruise entirely on batteries when in areas with sensitive wildlife, while her dynamic positioning system enables the yacht to stay in a position without dropping the anchor on delicate seabeds.
As one of the world's most iconic yachts, Savannah was invited to represent Feadship at the prestigious Monaco Yacht Show in 2023 - a true testament to her status in the superyacht world.
Distinctive lines and unmistakable metallic paint set new standards for how a yacht could look.
Savannah is far from a typical Mediterranean or Caribbean charter yacht. While she has spent plenty of time cruising these popular yachting destinations, she has also explored some of the world's most remote destinations across places like the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and Africa. Her owner's philosophy was simple: travel should be a shared experience. From Costa Rica, where the crew witnessed a super pod of spinner dolphins, to the Galápagos Islands, where they dove alongside sea lions, the team wasn't just there to work - Savannah's owner wanted them there to experience these destinations themselves.
"The owner's philosophy was simple yet powerful: empower people, trust their potential, and build something extraordinary together. His passion for life and commitment to collaboration drive everything we do. The beauty of Savannah lies not just in her design and technology, but in the culture of family, innovation, and respect he created." reflects Savannah 's executive officer, Josephine De Luca.
This philosophy not only shaped the yacht’s innovative design but also established a culture that influences every aspect of Savannah 's daily operations. This means that beneath her sleek exterior and advanced electric propulsion system lies something equally unique - her crew.
The owner's philosophy toward life and business created a yachting program that remains unmatched in the yacht industry. Led by Captain Durham and Josephine, Savannah 's crew stands out for their dedication, professionalism and special crew culture which has lead to unrivalled levels of longevity and loyalty throughout their senior team.
" Savannah 's crew is a family, united by a shared purpose from the yacht's very creation. Guests charter her for her beauty, but return for the crew. It's the personal touch, attention to detail, and passion we bring to every journey that makes Savannah unique." says Josephine. The crew's commitment to delivering exceptional experiences has made Savannah one of the world's most sought-after charter yachts.
"Reliability isn’t just a goal - it's a non-negotiable standard . We've never had to say no to a trip or a charter"
Savannah is run like a finely-tuned business, and is consistently booked for charters at over one million euros per week. Indeed, her charter revenue exceeds her operating budget. As with any successful business, this also comes down to meticulous attention to maintenance and operations.
"The goal is simple: flawless execution. We ensure everything runs seamlessly so guests experience nothing but perfection. It's not about cutting costs; it's about delivering an unmatched experience. This dedication to detail and excellence is part of the legacy the owner created - where quality and reliability are paramount" Josephine explains. This ethos ensures that Savannah is always ready for the next adventure, with built-in systems to prevent potential failures.
"For us, reliability isn't just a goal - it's a non-negotiable standard. We've never had to say no to a trip or a charter because we've built a program that ensures operational success, no matter the challenge. A proactive management approach and a strong commitment to thorough preparation has ensured that Savannah is always ready for the next adventure," notes Captain Durham. This reliability is a direct result of the empowered crew and the owner's original vision for uncompromising quality combined with a revolutionary propulsion system which has multiple levels of redundancy. It also secures her status as an incredibly robust and capable yacht.
As Savannah sails into her next decade, her legacy continues to grow. She is about to emerge after nearly six months in the yard for her 10-year survey. With plenty of upgrades planned, she'll no doubt build on her classic design and solid technical foundation, ready for her next decade of world travels. While we celebrate her first ten years, we look forward to seeing her many more adventures to come, honoring the legacy of a yacht where everything has truly fallen into place.
We're excited about what the future holds for Savannah.

The blue-footed and red-footed boobies - unique birds endemic to the Galápagos.
BY NIKKO KARKI
Exploring the Galápagos Islands is more than just a trip - it's a journey into one of the world's last truly wild places. Here you get a front-row seat to nature in its purest form, teeming with unique wildlife, dramatic landscapes, and pristine waters. After a once-in-a-lifetime yacht expedition to this protected archipelago this summer, Nikko shares his carefully curated expedition that reveals the Galápagos as few get to see it - up close, undisturbed, and unforgettable.
As summer wound down in Jupiter, an unexpected opportunity arose. A close friend and client invited me to join a yacht expedition I helped plan through the Galápagos Islands. There was only one possible answer. So, just 36 hours later I boarded my hastily booked flights and embarked on a trip that would reshape how I see the natural world.
Getting to the Galápagos is refreshingly straightforward. A quick flight from Miami to Quito, followed by a domestic leg lands you in Baltra Island, once a US Navy base protecting the Panama Canal.
"The wildlife here is unlike anywhere else. It feels as though you've been dropped into a real-life nature documentary."
From the moment we arrived, the abundance of wildlife was astounding. Sea lions basked in the sun along the dock, while a blue-footed booby - the Galápagos' famous avian resident - perched nearby, as if to greet us. Here, nature seems to be on full display, entirely undisturbed.
Our home for the week was a 50-meter (164 ft) yacht, with an itinerary designed for complete immersion. Days alternated between guided land excursions and diving expeditions, creating a perfect balance for exploring both the islands and their vibrant waters.
From the start, the Galápagos revealed its unique wonders. We snorkeled alongside curious sea lion pups, walked among marine iguanas lounging along volcanic shores, and encountered Galápagos penguins darting through the water. Each day, new landscapes unfolded: beaches with white sand, cliffs alive with rare birds, and waters rich with marine life. The wildlife here is unlike anywhere else - up-close, wide-ranging and abundant. It feels as though you have been dropped into a real life nature documentary.
For those drawn to the water, the Galápagos offers an unmatched underwater experience. We dived alongside hammerhead sharks, spotted eagle rays, and Galápagos sharks, with schools of fish weaving through the clear currents. It was a world brimming with life - a diver's paradise that felt both exhilarating and serene.
What sets the Galápagos apart is the dedication to preserving the unique and extremely delicate ecosystems. The National Park Service regulates every excursion, with certified park guides ensuring that visitors respect strict guidelines. Group visits are scheduled so that each landing site remains uncrowded, and visitors follow designated paths. This careful management allows the islands to remain as unspoiled as they were when Darwin first arrived, protecting the unique environment while still allowing visitors a close connection to it.
Sea lions relaxing on the beaches - the spirit of the Galápagos where wildlife lives a protected existence.
Our guides were so knowledgeable, offering insights into the islands’ geological origins and the complex ecosystems they support. Learning about what we were seeing and watching these natural processes play out firsthand was an inspiring reminder of how life adapts and evolves in isolated environments.
For photographers, the Galápagos is a dream come true. Every view offered something worth capturing, from golden sunsets over the Pacific to vibrant birds in flight. My bird photography collection has grown considerably - but it was hard to resist in such a setting! I also go to practice my Spanish with the Ecuadorian locals, who are warm and welcoming, helping me to spot subjects for my photographic endeavors. It all added an authentic layer to the experience.
If you've ever considered the Galápagos, there’s no better time to go. The journey is easier than expected, but the rewards are beyond anything you could imagine. For any travelerwhether seasoned or new to adventure - the islands offer a rare chance to reconnect with nature in a setting that feels both remote and remarkable.
If you're inspired to explore the wonders of the Galápagos or have a dream destination in mind for your next adventure, we'd be happy to share our insights and help you plan an unforgettable journey.
