In this competition for a new Chinese institute, two options are proposed. The first scheme is in spired by “a lantern raised to the sky”, which will be a whole new building with upper part enveloped with curve glazing. The second scheme, which would renovate the existing building on the site, takes inspiration from traditional bamboo scrolls and screens. Both will resonate with the concept that to manifest Chinese culture’s longevity and continuity - a boundless country. The irregular site is located in a cul-de-sac with a narrow opening, which is a challenge for public space making and distribution of multiple types of circulation.

The bridge to nowhere on Yalu River had wit nessed the historical connection between China and North Korea. It was destroyed by bombing. Nowadays, people from both sides share similar culture, while there is few communication. We want to explore the possibility of architectural space, where citizens divided by the border participate in cultural activities without crossing the border and interact effectively when enjoying performances, exhibitions, and natural at the same time. Our goal is to eliminate the barrier, diminish misunderstandings and stimulate communication.

The study area is set in the old town of Zhang pu. Majority of land is utilized as residential and commercial, with a small portion being institution al and employment. With Xihu Park to its west and City Hall Square to its east, this area becomes an integral anchor of a newly planned landscape path system. Revitalization and renovation of this area need not only the reconciliation between exterior large scale urban context and interior old residen tial area, but also connection of the landscape axis. This proposal is inspired by a farmers’ market on its western perimeter. In a site which will soon be be tween two major pieces of green space, we need to bring a solution that corresponds to them. A bazaar would bring vitality of main streets into this site. Furthermore, it would connect a pedestrian path system and diversify commercial types of this area.

Kiribati, a Pacific island nation, is facing the inevitable submersion owing to climate change. Preparations are being made for voluntary migration with dignity. The government is seeking land to accommodate relocation. In search of the Ark for Kiribati people, Ontario Place, a site on the Toronto waterfront with an uncertain future, has been chosen as a destination to demonstrate a synergy between the community and the city. With an urban fabric woven of collective housing and community space, the arrival neighborhood facilitates integration, and the urban common enhances connectivity. Optimism in response to crisis motivates resilient, sustainable, and respon sible changes.

There is a mutual goal in the future urban development. The key word is “Inclusivity”. On one hand, a group of self-reliant migrants have a sophisticated relationship with water. They are looking for an arrival neighborhood that value community and facilitate integration. On the other hand, a derelict former theme park is eagerly looking for a revitalization. It has an enlightening past that embodies brilliant planning ideology and a future that is wide open. Hence, it is a wonderful opportunity to examine how a simultaneity of collectively housing and community spaces would weave the urban fabric in a site that is so close to, yet far away from the dynamic city core. This kind of simultaneity is what we should project on Ontario Place.
