LILLIAN BRADLEY: PIONEERING PHILANTHROPY
FOUNDER OF THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF SAN DIEGO
In early 1927, Lillian Bradley, serving as Chairman of San Diego’s 18th Annual Charity Ball, embarked on a transformative journey Inspired by the Pasadena Junior League's mission, she resolved to establish a Junior League in San Diego (JSLD).
Teaming up with her friend Emily Clayton, Lillian founded the Junior Committee for San Diego Charities to secure admission into the Association of Junior Leagues of America (AJLA) Their efforts paid off in 1929 when the Junior League of San Diego became the fifth League in California and the 105th member of AJLA.
Since then, JLSD, under various leadership, has been integral in addressing community needs Initiatives like the Day Nursery and collaborations with organizations such as Voices for Children and LEAD San Diego have left a lasting impact
Guided by Lillian Bradley's vision, JLSD continues to serve the community. Today, it focuses on combating Food Insecurity, building upon a legacy of compassion and dedication Lillian Bradley's pioneering spirit remains an inspiration as JLSD navigates the challenges of the present with resilience and determination

REFLECTING ON 95 YEARS OF IMPACT
HONORING LEGACY, EMPOWERING FUTURES
In March, as we honor JLSD's 95 years of service, we proudly carry forward the legacy of our founder, Lillian Bradley, with unwavering dedication to our community. Our commitment to empowering and combatting food insecurity remains resolute as we advance with strategic initiatives and collaborative partnerships
Beyond simply offering charity, JLSD's impact lies in its dedication to fostering sustainable solutions and empowering individuals to shape brighter futures With integrity, compassion, and unwavering determination, we strive to make meaningful differences in the lives of those we serve in San Diego.
Our recent Charter Day luncheon, held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, was a momentous occasion where JLSD members came together to honor our rich history and glean insights from our esteemed leadership.
We were privileged to host Kelley Grimes, MSW, who shared invaluable perspectives on "The Art of Self-Nurturing: Sustainable Service "
Amidst the celebration, we warmly welcomed our newly appointed Executive Management Team-Elect for 2024-2025 term Their dedication and enthusiasm inspire us as we renew our commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive future for all As we commemorate 95 years of profound impact, we remain deeply grateful for the countless lives touched by the Junior League of San Diego.

PROVISIONAL MEMBER CAROLINE WOHL: EMBRACING TRADITION, DRIVING IMPACT
How did your upbringing shape your values, and where did you grow up?
As a fifth-generation San Diegan, family is important to me, and I'm grateful to have grown up with most of my direct family in southern California Growing up in San Diego, I was fortunate to be exposed to diverse communities and experiences, which shaped who I am today
What inspired you to become a Provisional Member in JLSD?
I wanted to be part of a community of likeminded women with similar values, driven by the goal of making a difference in our San Diego community while empowering each other.
My mother, Caroline Rentto Wohl, and grandmother, Carolyn Sedlock Rentto are Sustainers in the Junior League of San Diego (My first JLSD memory is on the steps of the Junior League house, as a child when I helped my mom fill backpacks with school supplies to be donated to students in need ) After hearing about the impact of their volunteering experiences, professional development opportunities, and making friends (whom they still cherish today!) through JLSD, I knew JLSD was the place for me
How do you leverage your professional skills and expertise in your role within the League?
As a PR and marketing communications professional, I'm excited to bring my love for writing, branding and storytelling to the League. I'm excited to amplify the stories of our League members and share how JLSD has impacted communities since 1929
Which committees or activities have you found most engaging as a Provisional or New Member?
I have loved meeting new people and collaborating with different teams as part of the Communications Committee! IMPACT shifts are fantastic opportunities to volunteer in the community with other Provisionals and meet Active members. I continue to learn from and be inspired by the kind, intelligent women who make up the League, and I'm so proud to be part of JLSD

FIRST YEAR ACTIVE MEREDITH STEWARD: EXPLORING GROWTH AND COMMUNITY
Could you share a bit about your hometown and how it compares to your current community?
I grew up in a small town in Delaware in a very close-knit community where everyone knows everyone. For most of my life I stayed in the same place and there was not much change. I loved my hometown and valued my small community where I was so close to my family and friends It was here that I met my husband and cultivated lifelong relationships As much as I loved my hometown, I craved change I seized the opportunity to move to San Diego for work, excited to explore a life so different from the one I had grown accustomed to However, moving to San Diego in May 2020 posed unforeseen challenges that made it difficult for me to integrate into a new community Despite my outgoing nature, navigating isolation and homesickness tested my resolve, leading me to contemplate returning to the familiarity of home The Junior League came into my life just when I needed it most JLSD helped me find my place in this new community (On) my first visit to 210 Maple, I knew I was home I was introduced to a supportive network of women who encouraged me to pursue my interests and goals. I’ve been able to expand my role in the San Diego community through volunteer activities and membership connections that have helped me feel a sense of belonging once again

How have your hobbies evolved since joining JLSD, and have you discovered any new interests through League activities?
The advice I received early on in a provisional training session, “you get out what you put in,” has continued to resonate with me during my time in the League
There are so many opportunities to explore new interests, whether it is through training, membership connection events or committee involvement, you just have to put yourself out there and be willing to make the most of each new experience
Among the highlights of my Junior League experience is the book club While I was an avid reader when I was young, the demands of college and later my career caused me to put this passion to the wayside Joining a monthly book club reignited my love for reading, I truly forgot it was something that I enjoyed so much and is made even better by gathering with other members to discuss the books It's something I look forward to each month.
How has being an Active Member influenced or enhanced your professional life?
Being an Active Member in the Junior League has emphasized the importance of communication and collaboration Everyone works so hard, but at the end of the day, we are all volunteers who are trying our best Effective communication becomes crucial when working with different committees towards common goals. Navigating interactions within JLSD committees has improved my ability to communicate, drive discussions, and ensure task completion, which is essential for leadership in any workplace setting I’ve gained confidence to speak my mind and put forward my ideas without hesitation. Learning to communicate effectively not only enhances teamwork within the League but also paves the way for recognition and leadership opportunities in my career
Reflecting on your first years, what specific leadership roles or committee experiences have had a significant impact on you?
Working within my committee has allowed me to expand my horizons and learn a new skill I work in accounting and am traditionally very focused on numbers and processing information When choosing my committee my instinct was to go with Finance as that is what I was familiar with, but I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and try something new with Communications
On the Communications committee I’ve been able to flex my creative muscles Even though it is so different from what I am used to, I enjoyed engaging in tasks related to marketing and graphic design. There are so many opportunities within the League to try something new and expand your horizons, which is something I appreciate most about this organization

TRANSFER MEMBER FINDING HOME: CLARE MICHAL’S JOURNEY THROUGH JUNIOR LEAGUES
Reflecting on your journey across Junior Leagues, what unique perspectives or experiences have you gained from each community?
I was a provisional and spent a few years here in the Junior League of San Diego (JLSD), but for the last three years, I was a member of the Junior League of Orange County, CA (JLOCC) The two leagues and the two communities are so different, but in both, I've appreciated the opportunity to meet and interact with women that I wouldn't meet in my daily life I met one of my best friends organizing the JLOCC cookbook closet, but without The League we never would have crossed each other's paths!
How has joining JLSD differed from your previous Junior League experiences, and what aspects have remained consistent?
JLOCC is what they call a SLIBI league (Small League Big Impact) so there are fewer members than in JLSD I was the New Member Chair for two years, and I had to wear a lot of hats and juggle a lot of plates to ensure that the New Members felt welcomed and ready to be Actives! Having so many wonderful members here in JLSD and having them as resources is a blessing It makes being a member or being in a leadership role feel more sustainable and balanced.
On the other hand, I moved to Orange County for a new job, in the middle of a global pandemic, and didn't know a soul After a few months, I felt like I knew the name of every member of JLOCC, what city they lived in, and probably their pet's names It was intimate and that was also a blessing Both have taught me so much about myself and what I am capable of They have been a supportive place to "fail" and experiment with ideas.
Could you share a memorable moment of integration or connection within JLSD since your transfer?
Seeing so many familiar faces still in the League! The first Impact Shift I attended this year I saw two people from my Provisional class from 2013! Love the longevity!
I've also had the opportunity to step into the New Member Training Council Co-Chair-Elect role. I love being the Hostess of the League, and getting to welcome these women into this great league that I joined when I was 23 is amazing!
How do you leverage your diverse Junior League background in your current role within JLSD?
I'm hoping to see what I've seen succeed on a small scale transform into something bigger!
I want to use what I've learned about the psychology of new members, the feedback I've received, and the organic and book knowledge I've gained to customize the New Member experience for this incoming class!

6TH YEAR
ACTIVE MEMBER AMANDA PEACOCK: NAVIGATING MOTHERHOOD AND LEADERSHIP IN JLSD
As a seasoned Active Member, how has your understanding of the League's mission deepened over the years?
It's been quite the ride, getting to know the heart and soul of the League's mission over the years With each leadership role I've taken on, I've gained a deeper appreciation for the unique strengths and contributions of every member in our League I'm excited to continue learning in my next two years on Nominating Committee
How have your hobbies and personal interests contributed to your continued engagement in JLSD?
Juggling the demands of motherhood has reshaped my priorities, but JLSD has been a constant source of strength Whether it's seeking advice from the JLSD moms Facebook group or sharing the joy of parenthood with fellow members, this League has been my village, supporting me through every step of motherhood.
Share a pivotal moment where your professional skills and League involvement intersected positively.
Being a part of leadership within JLSD wasn't just about adding tasks; it was an opportunity for profound professional growth Balancing the demands of VP of Membership alongside my corporate role, I quickly discovered the invaluable transferability of skills learned in JLSD leadership to my professional life. The seamless connection between my VP tenure and current corporate position has equipped me with essential communication and organizational skills, enhancing my effectiveness in both fields
Reflect on your journey so far - which committees or projects stand out as particularly transformative for you?
Not that we're playing favorites here but being a Provisional mentor was an incredibly fulfilling experience for me. Walking alongside New Members on their Junior League journey allowed me to witness their growth firsthand It was deeply rewarding to offer guidance and support as they embarked on their own experiences within JLSD

7TH YEAR ACTIVE MEMBER KATHERINE KNOPES: A REFLECTION ON LEADERSHIP, MOTHERHOOD, AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH IN JLSD
As a seasoned Active Member, how has your understanding of the League's mission deepened over the years?
Since joining the Junior League, the part of our Mission that I feel I have really seen develop is the ability to train women I have seen people who work in Marketing become all-stars on the Community council or people who work in Finance leading New Members All because they have been trained to do so through the Junior League The ability for this organization to help women lead other women and train them to do so is an incredible resource of our organization.
How have your hobbies and personal interests contributed to your continued engagement in JLSD?
Since COVID I have become a mom of 2 The JLSD Moms group has been such a great resource for me to get together with other moms, get advice, and help through the transition of motherhood
Share a pivotal moment where your professional skills and League involvement intersected positively.
I am currently a high school math teacher My first year teaching was also the year I was Provisional Co-Chair Planning and organization for my classroom bled over into my job leading Provisionals, and leading a group of like-minded women each month gave me confidence in my public speaking which only can help me in the classroom. That year was a learning experience in both positions and each helped me with the other
Reflect on your journey so far - which committees or projects stand out as particularly transformative for you?
I think my time on Nominating Committee really shaped my time in the League It is amazing to be able to see the inner workings of the League and how each position is slated. It felt like a great honor to be part of the committee to pick our future leaders and be a liaison from each committee to the Board
