The Junior League of Roanoke Valley would like to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported us during the Roanoke Valley Gives Day on March 17. Together we met our goal and raised $2,582 to help support our mission.

“We are so thankful to our membership and community for getting behind us and participating in Roanoke Valley Gives,” said President-Elect Ginger Poole Avis. “This was an incredible opportunity for us to educate our community on our mission and community partners.”

All in all, $728,427 was raised in 24 hours to support area non-profit organizations!

Shivani Chati

Shivani Chati is a graduating senior at Hidden Valley High School and plans to attend Virginia Tech in the fall of 2017.

Shivani has served as volunteer at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital since 2013. She also teaches Spanish to elementary school students and volunteers at the India Heritage Society. Shivani has been a Girl Scout for ten years and has received both the Bronze and Silver Awards from the Girl Scouts of America. As a student at Hidden Valley, Shivani is a member of the Varsity Tennis Team, Debate team, Cancer Awareness team, Academic Team, and Beta Club. Shivani plans to pursue a career in medicine.

Abigail Johnson

Abigail Johnson is a graduating senior at Northside High School. She attends Green Ridge Baptist Church, and has volunteered at the Church’s Vacation Bible School for three summers. Abigail volunteers as a Sunday morning babysitter at the Church and has participated in several of their mission projects. Additionally, Abigail has volunteered at Glen Cove Elementary School’s preschool program. She has also participated in Northside High School’s “The Little Feet Meet” which is part of Special Olympics. At Northside, Abigail is a member of the School’s Cross Country team, Swim team, and Outdoor Track team. She plans to attend Liberty University in the fall of 2017.

FROM THE PRESIDENT The summer months are in full swing! During these months, we have a tendency to make more time to enjoy our friends, family, the outdoors, or pick up that book you have been waiting to read. The pace may appear to slow down at the Junior League of Roanoke Valley, but it’s actually our time for transition, planning and final preparation for the next production.

From volunteering to fundraising and advocacy, the passion of our members continues year round, and builds momentum from year to year in order to positively impact the Roanoke Valley. During the 2016-2017 year, the JLRV celebrated its 90th Anniversary and achieved huge results by collectively demonstrating every word of our mission. Our members gave over 13,000 volunteer hours to JLRV initiatives this year.

I hope that you will read our year in review, beginning on page 14, giving you a better understanding of all of that has been accomplished and the many ways the JLRV impacted our community over the last year.

It has been an amazing year because of so many people committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Lorraine Matusak, a leadership scholar said, “Don’t lose sight of the most important factors that lead to successful leadership: commitment, a passion to make a difference, a vision for achieving positive change, and the courage to take action.” The women of the Junior League of Roanoke Valley have embodied these ideals for nine decades, and there’s no sign of stopping us now.The stories in this issue are further examples of inspiring, committed, and resilient women that had the courage to take action and make their way.

I am humbled to have had the opportunity to serve as president, and will always credit the JLRV for the invaluable leadership skills, unexpected friendships and genuine love for a community. I am overjoyed to pass on the honors to a talented, servant leader that will confidently lead the JLRV into its next chapter. Ginger Poole Avis, 91st JLRV President, I will remain a lifelong friend and supporter of all you and this organization’s mission seeks to accomplish.

MEET THE EDITOR BOARD FROM Being All In this year has challenged me at every turn. To provide a magazine that was worthy of celebrating our 90th year, to juggle my responsibilities along with other commitments – presidency of my alumni association and new job, and to continue in the exploration of the stories found within the Junior League of Roanoke Valley. Each of these were my goals throughout this year, just as you had your own JLRV goals in your placement.

Throughout our 90 years we have ebbed and flowed with the times, challenged the norms, and created impact across our community. In our 90th year we continued with these three elements. From our fully entrenching ourselves in our new governance to taking on different approaches to the General Membership Meetings to expanding our Done in A Day projects. Together, we continued the legacy of those members who came before us and were ALL IN for the JLRV, going down our own path and put our own handprint on our future.

Each of us have joined the JLRV for our own reasons – whether it’s giving back to the community, making new friends, or our own development. What each of us have gotten out of it is far beyond what we have put into it. Being part of this incredible group of women changes you and pushes you to be a better person, challenging you to think of others first and recognize how best to impact the community.

My challenge to you is to continue to BE ALL IN in your JLRV journey. Look around at what your opportunities and get involved in making things happen. Invest in yourself so that you can be even more impactful. Expand past those you know in the league and challenge yourself to expand your friendships at every chance. Make the most of every interaction and opportunity to BE ALL IN and continue to allow the JLRV to mold you.

As I close this year, two quotes come to mind. Dr. Suess said, “don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened” and Winnie the Pooh said, “how lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard!” The experience of serving as the founding editor of the JLRV STAR magazine has been a tremendous honor. Being part of this beginning has brought me closer to fellow members and opened my eyes and heart to all that the JLRV is and does within our community. I am grateful that it was entrusted to me. It is truly a blessing to be part of this sisterhood and carry our mission.

I am excited for the future of this magazine and where the future editors will take it. Here’s to the next 90 years!

As a league, we are having a strong focus on our community. We do this by providing resources and building bridges that make a lasting impact on our community. Each year JLRV women make leave their mark on the community by participating in both Done in a Day and Star Sampler Programs around the Roanoke Valley and the New River Valley.

Members also participated in An Evening Under the Stars with Roanoke Ballet, Roanoke Valley Garden Club and the American Heart Association annual Heart Ball. Most recently our members helped with a food drive and assisted with a horse race. JLRV members are making their mark all over the community and in turn are making a big difference.

In 2016-2017 our members lived up to their service promise and gave back at events both big and small. All through the 2016-2017 year new, active, and sustainer members of the JLRV made Summer Harper, our president, motto of ALL IN into a mantra – everyone was truly ALL IN for the JLRV and the Roanoke Valley community. The triumphs and challenges showed the strength and determination of the women of the JLRV. At the annual celebration we came together to celebrate our many accomplishments.

As part of the evening the membership awards were announced (p. 12). Summer Harper, JLRV president 2016-2017, reflected on her year. She shared how impactful the opportunity to serve in this role was and how proud she was of each and every member for being ALL IN for the JLRV. Specifically, Summer shared William Ward’s words, “When we seek to discover the best in others we somehow bring the best in ourselves.” Our JLRV members definitely made this true in the 2017-2018 year.

In the JLRV tradition, Summer handed over the gavel to the incoming president for 2017-2018, Ginger Poole Avis. A unique pin for the JLRV, a letter from the outgoing president to the incoming president, book about the history of Junior Leagues, and a JLRV blessing, were all presented to Ginger by Summer.

Ginger then shared about the road to 100 year and reminded us all that we are part of something greater than ourselves. Everyone has been ALL IN and are ready for what in store for us next year.

Community Project Grants are awarded to fund longterm projects with the potential to be self-sustaining.

Grants are contingent upon available funding as well as board and membership approval. Organizations who receive funding must provide JLRV with enriching volunteer opportunities.

• The STAR magazine’s distribution increased to 3,000 to expand the reach of communicating the mission and achievements of the JLRV in the community.

• Members of the JLRV attended the first Virginia Summit in Richmond, networking and brainstorming with other Junior Leagues throughout the Commonwealth.

• The General Membership format transitioned to incorporate community keynote speakers and legacy speakers with ties to the organization to strengthen membership and sustainer engagement.

• This was the second year of the Roanoke County Social Services Foster Care Christmas partnership, which helped provide more than 100 gifts to foster Children in the Roanoke area during the holidays.

• The JLRV raised $3,540 for Family Services of Roanoke Valley at the Celebrity Tip Off event.

JLRV is an all volunteer organization. New Members, Actives and Sustainers spend hundreds of hours a year out in the community partnering on JLRV projects and to keep the league running day-to-day. Any member can nominate a JLRV woman for membership awards and those submissions are voted on by the Board of Directors.

Rising Star Award: KAYLA OWATA Kayla Owata enthusiastically embraced her new member year. She attended the Virginia Junior League’s conference in November and has continually stepped into leadership and shown this leadership during her New Member year.

“She also worked diligently on multiple committee projects, quickly signed up to volunteer, attended every New Member and General Membership meeting. Her passion for JLRV is infectious. Kayla truly exemplifies what it means for a new member to be all in!“ said Susan Stanley-Zahorchak, New Member Co-chair.

She is always willing to help, volunteer, and be involved with all things Junior League. We’re very excited she has accepted the leadership role of MET Co-Chair for the 2017-2018 league year.

Shining Star Award: KIM PATTERSON Kim Patterson has gone above and beyond her duties this year. She has worked tirelessly to make the membership experience more enjoyable.

“Kim’s dedication to the League is truly awe inspiring and I know that our members truly felt her efforts to engage them and improve their experience,” said Lydia Merritt, Membership Vice President.

She sends letters of encouragement and thoughtful notes of thanks to let others know she notices the hard work they are doing in the JLRV. She has had email, phone and in person meetings with Digital Cheetah to problem solve how to use this tool more effectively for membership. In a year where several people on the Membership Council, including the Membership Vice President took leaves of absence, she stepped up to fill many roles and was always trying to anticipate the League’s needs.

Mary Terry Goodwin Kuyk Award: BARBARA DUERK Barbara Duerk believes every day is the first day of the rest of your life.

She credits the Junior League for teaching her everyone has talents that should be shared. She was appointed by JLRV to serve on the board of the newly formed city committee called the Roanoke Neighborhood Partnership. Over more than 20 years she has served in multiple positions empowering and enabling neighborhood leaders from all parts of the city and multiple backgrounds. She says it’s that experience that allowed her to understand that she was a farmer.

“I plant seeds, water and fertilize. I pull weeds that discourage growth.

Raising the potential of self esteem is an empowering crop to harvest. I am a pusher and supporter for agents of change,” said Duerk.

She has seen the benefits from her community involvement overflow into her family seeing her daughters

understand the many cultures Roanoke has and introducing them to people beyond their neighborhood friends growing up. Her daughter, Valissa Duerk lives in Roanoke and the mother-daughter pair comes to almost every Sustainer event. Their enthusiasm for the community and the JLRV are always evident.

Barbara Duerk’s touch is on many things in the Roanoke Valley including the Lick Run Greenway and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial.

She has been active in youth programming teaching outdoor skills to young people in the Community Outreach Program and Girl Scouts.

She hasn’t stopped being active in pushing for more connection between neighborhoods, the region and the Commonwealth. She is an advocate for making the city more bike friendly and believes it is important to connect the New River Valley and Roanoke Valley, including connecting the Greenway to the Huckleberry Trail. We are honored to serve with her and she is a model for the JLRV mission of “developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.”

Galaxy Award: COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES COMMITTEE This year’s Galaxy Award goes to a group of women who have pioneered a new model of volunteerism and JLRV. They worked to find new projects to be involved with, even bringing in a $1,000 donation for us… and expanded existing JLRV relationships within the community.

This committee led the way on Done in A Day projects and we can’t wait to take the hard work they put in this year and expand on it in future years.

Management Team Member of the Year: LINDSAY MURRAY Submitted by Christy Pauley, Executive Vice President

Determining who to acknowledge as the Management Team member of the year was of course a challenging task. I have been so fortunate to have had such an amazing team of women this year, that have all worked together to ensure that this year was a success. As we entered in to the second year of our “Evolution,” it was important to me that we make an impact and take the feedback of our entire League into consideration to make and implement appropriate improvements. The Management Team as a whole embraced this, but more specifically our Administrative Vice President, Lindsay Murray, not only embraced the changes but ran with them.

With the implementation of the new GMM format, the Administrative VP position as a whole changed dramatically, as the job description took on a whole different list of jobs and responsibilities. Lindsay truly was my right hand this entire year, not only in her specific position, but as a resource, a reminder, a voice of reason, and a friend. She always made sure that we as a Management Team were taken care of for every meeting, that our meeting notes were impeccable and detailed, and that as the EVP, I was fully prepared for each and every General Membership Meeting and that it went off with-

out a hitch. Lindsay is a tremendous asset to our League and to our Community which we all witnessed earlier in the year when she received the Milken Educator Award for teaching.

I can say without question this year would not have been the true success that it was without the commitment and dedication of Mrs. Lindsay Murray. Thank you Lindsay, for all you do day in and day out for both our League, for our children, and for our community, I am proud to call you my League Sister and my friend.

Governance Board Member of the Year: LINDSAY PHIPPS Submitted by: Summer Harper, President

There’s nothing this women cannot do! And she was our glue this year whether we even realized it. Recording Secretary can be a thankless job as she is referencing bylaws, taking minutes, and ensuring our team has food, while properly governing our organization. Lindsay Phipps has truly been my right hand, and embraced her role from the very beginning. She took a workshop on Robert’s Rules, Parliamentary Procedure. During her time in the league Linday has served the Stocked Market Committee, MET, and truly showed her leadership and dedication in her first year on the governance board. Lindsay is an attorney that loves to event plan.

There’s nothing she can’t do, and we are fortunate to have her in JLRV. I’m proud to give this year’s board member of the year to Lindsay Phipps.

Brittany Turman DIGITAL MEDIA CHAIR

Brittany has had a big year this year. She moved from a new member to her first active year and serves as Digital Media Chair. All JLRV members have seen her great contribution this year on Facebook and a number of other places. She also got married to the love of her life and had lots of adventure as a mom. In her first active year, she was ALL IN and shares about with us about her experience.

Share with us about you I live in Roanoke, VA with my husband, Brandon and son, Paul. We have a dog and two cats. We are currently building our “forever farm” in Fincastle, VA. I work for nearly a decade for UnitedHealthT H E S TA R M A G A Z I N E

of the USA for career day, but I’m thinking the President of the JLRV is more my pace.

What has surprised you most about being part of the JLRV? I would have to say the thing that surprised me the most was how VOLUME 2 | NUMBER 3

BRITTANY TURMAN much of a footprint the JLRV has in Roanoke. When I got the idea to do the Flashback Friday series on social media, I went to the office and spent days digging through the archives – looking at old photos and reading old newspaper clippings. Nowadays, we’re known for the Stocked Market. A lot of people I talk to think that is all that we do, but we are so much more than that. We’ve been so much more than the Stocked Market or really any fundraiser that we’ve facilitated. The JLRV has truly helped build this community, and prior to doing my research this past fall, I was totally unaware of that.

What was your new member year in the JLRV like?

Busy and eye opening! I’ve lived in Roanoke for about 18 years and I thought I knew all there was to know about the area - joining the JLRV really taught me SO much about the Valley. I had no idea how much of an impact the Junior League has had on our community. I felt like every time I turned around, I had another meeting or another volunteer opportunity … and I loved it. I bonded with my new member “classmates” and just really threw myself into learning about the League.

What misconception did you come into the league with and how has it totally smashed that misconception?

I think society as a whole has this “white glove” conception when it comes to the Junior League in general. We’re all dainty ladies, sipping our tea, and keeping our checkbooks hot for charity. Junior Leaguers will open up our check16

books, but we also open up our hearts to causes; we aren’t afraid to roll up our sleeves and put a little elbow grease in it. I definitely do not fit that “white glove” perception, at all. I am far more comfortable in the woods, hiking or hunting, or down at my family’s cabin sleeping in a bunk bed and using a Johnny House, than I am at an afternoon tea. The majority of the women that I have met and grown to know and love through the Junior League, don’t fit that image either. We are a very diverse group of women from all different walks of life, ethnicities, etc. and we fit together. If there was one thing that I could tell everyone about the Junior League, it would be that – that we are truly SO diverse and we are not afraid to jump in the trenches and tackle a cause/issue head on.

What did it mean to you to be awarded the “new member of the year” award? How did it shape your first active year – if at all?

I was totally blindsided by winning that award. I remember sitting at my table at the annual celebration, with my “Junior League Posse”, and as they started talking about who was winning the award - I was freaking out. I am not someone who wins things! I remember looking across the table at Jessie Beemer and saying “Are they talking about me? Oh my God, they’re talking about me!”

It was an amazing honor. Very humbling. I was and still am very proud of it. It definitely shaped my first active year. I thought … “man, I’ve got to really BRING IT”. I get a sense of pride when I walk into the office and see my name on that plaque. Defi-

nitely a highlight for me, for sure.

What advice would you give to a new member moving into her active member year?

To quote Christy Pauley – “You get out of the league what you put into it”. I heard Christy say that at our very first new member meeting for 2016 and it stuck with me, and it is true.

What has been the difference between your new member year and your first active year?

Well, I can VOTE now. Seriously, I was so excited about voting this year. I feel like my first active year was just as busy as my new member year, but it was much more focused. When you’re a new member, you have so much going on. You’re fulfilling your new member requirements, you’re learning about the League and how all of the moving parts work, you’re learning about the Roanoke Valley – it’s a lot. After I received my placement for this year and knew what the role entailed, I had a sense of purpose – something to really buckle down and work on. I knew what my role was and I went forward with it full speed. I kept learning too. I’ve figured out that being in the JLRV is a constant learning process. I’m always learning more about the League and how it operates, how the League fits into the Roanoke Valley, and how I fit into the League.

What has been the most rewarding part of you being part of you being part of the JLRV? Big Picture: Learning how much of an impact that our organization has had on the Roanoke Val-

The JLRV has been so accepting to me in so many ways. Like I said before, I am not a lady who lunches.

I grew up getting food boxes from our church and wearing Goodwill clothes. There was no college fund, no pool memberships, no fancy vacations. I really had to pull myself up by my boot straps and work hard to get an education. I’m loud and outspoken.

ley and knowing that I’m a part of that legacy … that really makes me feel proud. I remember leaving the office after that first day of digging through the archives and feeling like I was standing a little straighter. I was feeling like … “WOW! I’m a part of something really big!” – and when it’s my time to go, I’ll leave a little bit of that behind. When you stop and think about the legacy that we’re all a part of … that’s pretty huge!

This year: I am SO proud of our Social Media this past year. When I took on the role of Digital Media Chair, our social media accounts were somewhat fledgling. I’ve watched our engagement numbers go up each week. I see the likes and the comments and the followers. I wanted to really beef up our social media presence and I accomplished that. I am especially proud of our Roanoke Valley Gives campaign. I coordinated the social media coverage of that the same week that I got married and let me tell you, it was no easy feat! I worked from home that day so that I could watch the posts go up, make sure they were accurate, and share them to my own personal Facebook account. I pretty much lived and breathed JLRV/RVGives for 24 hours and I was thrilled when we exceeded our goal that day for donations.

How has being a part of the JLRV added to your life?

Being in the JLRV has added to my life immensely. I have taken a lot of things that I’ve learned through the JL with me to work. I am a much more informed and involved citizen – so much more informed; being in the JLRV has really opened my eyes to issues that our Valley is facing and has gotten my wheels turning about how we can jump in and “fix” it. I feel like being in the JL has made me a better wife and mother – my time T H E S TA R M A G A Z I N E

with the JLRV is my “me” time … my time to give back and do something that is enriching for me, which in turn adds something to the rest of my life. It makes me happy to know that I’m making a difference in our community and I carry that happiness with me into my day to day life.

Being in the JLRV has encouraged me to get involved in other ways. I have taken on working with the Botetourt County Board of Elections as a Precinct Election Officer this year.

I’ve also gotten more involved with the Social Responsibility program at my company. I attribute my getting involved in other organizations and activities to the confidence that the JLRV has given me in my volunteer/ leadership skills. And of course the friendships. There is no group of ladies that is more encouraging and uplifting than my “Junior League Posse” (my husband’s nick name for my JL friends & I). There are so many women that I call friends who I never would have known if not for the Junior League – and if I got nothing else out of being in the JLRV, I would have that.

What do you look forward to most in your JLRV career?

Being President, of course.

I’ve struggled with prejudice and stereotyping my entire life being a bi-racial woman. There are a million reasons why, to an outsider who has misconceptions about the Junior League, I would be the perfect candidate to NOT be a Junior Leaguer.

But, that isn’t the case. The Junior League accepts women. It doesn’t matter what you look like, what you do, where you come from. If you have a passion for giving back and you want to be a leader in your community – then we’ll take you!

And that is what the JLRV did for me. They took me, just as I am. I’ve always been told that I’m too loud, too bossy, maybe too “take charge” … and those are the qualities that the JLRV has appreciated about me!

Not only are my leadership skills valued, but they’re developed and encouraged. And that’s big.

As a society, we see more women taking on those leader roles, but we’re still quietly encouraged to look pretty, be soft, follow the lead.

The JLRV has said “hell no, we’re not following anyone’s lead – WE ARE TAKING THE LEAD” … and that is definitely my style and I feel like it’s been very embraced – I’ve been very embraced, by the league as a whole.

BEING ALL IN IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE

From the time that Susan Still began her career, she has been ALL IN for her career and community. Not planning to become a banker after graduating with an Accounting degree from Virginia Tech, she began her career as a Teller at a bank in Florida, spawning the start of more than 40 years in the banking industry. She came to Roanoke over thirty years ago and has been making an impact in our area ever since.

Susan has led HomeTown Bank as president and CEO of HomeTown Bank since 2008, after first serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Lending Officer when HomeTown Bank opened in 2005. Previously she was with SunTrust Bank as Senior Vice President of Corporate Banking for two years and then in the same role with Wachovia Bank for 13 years and with Dominion Bank in for 16 years. Her experience in banking is varied from commercial lending, treasury management, capital management, capital markets, retail banking, and banking operations. She has been ALL IN with every bank she has worked with in her career.

Earlier this spring on March 20, Susan had a unique experience. She headed off to New York City with HomeTown Bank board members and colleagues. This group had the opportunity to participate in ringing the NASDAQ opening bell, signifying the milestone of HomeTown Bank being uplisted to NASDAQ. Susan had the honor of being the bell ringer for this corporate ritual and she was ALL IN for the experience. Even more she had a number of the founding board members, who are still serving the bank, surrounding her to celebrate this momentous occasion.

SUSTAINER SPOTLIGHT From serving as a board member to stepping into a leadership position, Susan has been actively impacting local, regional, and even national organizations for years. In 2016, she was honored to be appointed to the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. And if that’s not enough to keep her busy, she’s also an active board member with the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Foundation for Roanoke Valley and a trustee on the board of the North Cross School. Add to this involvement her service as a board member of the United Way of Roanoke Valley, Western Virginia Foundation for the Arts & Sciences, and the Better Business Bureau of Western Virginia, as well as the Virginia Bankers Association and the Community Bankers Council of the American Bankers Association.

Marching for Women IN ROANOKE AND BEYOND

On January 21, about 4,000 people marched in Roanoke’s Elmwood Park in support of women’s rights. The march took place in conjunction with the Women’s March in Washington D.C., along with 600 “sister marches” across the nation. The Roanoke event was co-organized by JLRV Sustainer Djuna Osborne and Leslie Cramer.

Osborne, a social worker, mother of two, and community volunteer, was initially planning to travel to D.C. to participate. “After the election, I felt like I really wanted to do something. I had taken our democracy

for granted and not realized how important it was to be involved.”

After a discussion with a friend who reminded her about the impact of local politics, she was inspired to organize a local march.

With no prior experience with such events, she did her homework and teamed up with her good friend Leslie Cramer. Osborne handled permitting and many other logistics, while Cramer utilized her marketing background. Once the event was put on Facebook, it grew exponentially. As a result, “over 4,000 men, women, and children came. It was fantastic!

dren – spouses of women who had gone to Washington to march.”

Osborne feels the impact of the event has been tremendous on the area.

“Towards the end of the march, Leslie and I stopped there and chatted with marchers who were coming in,” she said. “We exchanged hugs with so many people – people who were feeling hopeless and now they had hope. They were so thankful. People continue to thank me. It was a big deal for Roanoke. We didn’t realize how joined in solidarity we were.

How many people share the same values. I was really blown away by what the community could do.”

LIVE LIFE

According to Osborne, her varied Junior League experiences have helped to provide the knowledge and training to make this event a reality. She joined the Junior League of Columbia (SC) as a graduate student and later transferred to Leagues in Johnson City, TN; Winston-Salem, NC; and then Roanoke as her family moved around the South. She appreciates having been part of both large and small Leagues, and says that being a part of the Junior League was a “fantastic way to meet people, be active in the community, and have my own thing.” She became a JLRV Sustainer about two years ago.

She remains thankful for the Junior League: “Not just because I could transfer to so many areas, but because it is such a fantastic organization. I was able to take it with me to so many places, and each one was vastly different. I love that it’s a national organization, it’s women focused, and it builds leaders in the community. I am a big fan and always encourage women to join to get that sense of community and a place to put their volunteership, and network with other people. It definitely served me well.”

We will be sure to keep an eye on Djuna Osborne and her future endeavors!

In the end, we are all runners One of the things I love the most about running is the people you meet along the way. From weekly runs to race day, you’ll find runners/walkers giving high-fives and saying “looking good” to people who’s names they don’t know and who they may never see again. The running community is a place where folks of all ages, sizes, races and walks of life come together and show support for one another as they take steps toward one common goal – to finish. It’s a valuable lesson, I think we all can learn from. Despite differences, many of us have instilled in us one commonality – a desire to prevail.

On Patriots’ Day 2017, I look forward to joining tens of thousands of runners from across the world. Many of us will start the day with little in common except for the hope of ending the day as Boston Marathon Finishers.

Surround yourself with the right support Mark my running partner was one of the first people I met when I moved to Roanoke, Virginia. Being new to the area I reached out to a local running club as a way to meet people. There were a lot of seasoned runners there. I mentioned to them that I wanted to qualify for the Boston Marathon. They asked “have you run a marathon before?” I answered yes and told them about my previous attempts to qualify. One group member pointed to Mark and said “Stick with this guy and you’ll be okay.” Mark and I began to meet each weekend for distance runs.

Those who’ve followed my running journey closely will recall the earlyyyy morning runs with Johnathan which often included speed workouts. He’s a fast runner so trying to keep within a certain distance of him was a challenge. My pride wouldn’t allow me to completely eat his dust. If I’d fall to far behind the competitive voice in my head would say “Man Up Buttercup” causing me to run faster and push past the comfortable running pace. Increasing my mental toughness has become key in getting past “the wall” in marathon running.

Age ain’t nothin but a number, youngin Good running partners can make a 20 mile run fly by. Some marathon training runs can last close to 3 hours or more.

During our long runs, Mark and I have conversations about life, politics, current events and work. Over the past three years he’s become a good friend and mentor. Having run the Boston Marathon nearly a dozen times or more, Mark enjoys giving tips about the race such as how to train, where to stay in Boston and what the marathon route is like. Good running partners help to improve your running skills, great ones help you become a better person.

In running, and in life, surround yourself with people who will go the extra mile with you, challenge you to be a better person and cheer you on along the way.

Years ago I set my mind to doing whatever it takes to qualify for Boston. Reach-

My long-time running partner Mark and I are about 30 years apart in age. At first glance we may seem like an “odd running couple” but his experience in running marathons combined with my pop culture knowledge make for a good time. We enjoy engaging in friendly competition during our runs. I’ve spent countless hours staring at the back of Mark’s colorful shoes while trailing him up the steep hills in Roanoke. On the flip side there are times when I’m speeding past him up Mill Mountain. That’s one of the cool things about running – it can be a great equalizer. Some days age, weight and height don’t matter. In the end, finishing comes down to determination and heart.

By example he and others have shown me that in running and in life it’s important to leave excuses behind and push through barriers to reach our goals. Go get em!

“Cash Me Ousside” Running can be a very competitive sport.

Not only when it comes to competing with others but also when you are pushing yourself to improve. I used to size up the competition at 5k’s, half-marathons and other races to figure out how fast I needed to run in order to place or beat a running nemesis – that one person who you go back and forth with. If someone attempted to sprint past me during a run, I’d speed up thinking “Don’t let them beat you, Brie” or “Catch me at the finishline, how bout dat”.

During my many attempts to qualify for the Boston Marathon I focused on beating my previous time. During training runs, I’d check the pace on my Garmin every couple of minutes as if I were an anxious employee ready to jet out of the office on a Friday at 4:59 p.m. The harder I trained and worked on pacing, the lower the finishing time went 3:45, 3:40.

Enjoy the Journey The Boston Marathon will be my first visit to the City of Champions. While my main goal is to finish the race without injuries, I also want to spend time taking in the sights and sounds.

Looking back, I realize I missed out on making some fun memories while running “fast”.

This April, I will not be focusing on on the clock. I plan to relish the 26.2 mile journey by taking in the moments, enjoying the scenes and snapping some pics along the way. After putting in the work to get there, it’s time to enjoy the reward.

Race Day While my friends had told stories about the excitement surrounding race day it was something I wanted to experience for myself. On Patriots’ Day, I woke up not really knowing what to expect. I headed to the hotel lobby in my pajamas to grab coffee and was greeted by high-energy runners already dressed and ready to go. I wiped the sleep from my eyes and prepared to put my game face on. By 7:30 I was caffeinated, energized and fully clothed (sunglasses included). I returned to the lobby to catch a shuttle T H E S TA R M A G A Z I N E

runners as they passed by. The historic course went through Natick, Newtown, Brookeline and other areas before ending in Boston.

On the bus were people from Chicago, Pennsylvania, Germany, China and other places. Many of the conversations started the similar questions “Is this your first time running Boston”, “Where’d you qualify”, “What was your BQ time”, “What pace are you running today.”

Each runner answered with pride.

Me: First time… D.C. Rock & Roll…

3:33:24…I’m taking my time with this one, planning to enjoy the run.

We arrived at the Athletes Village around 8:30 am. You could feel the excitement in the air as nearly 13,000 athletes waited to run. The first wave of runners started around 10 a.m. I was in Wave 3 which took off at 10:50. Once our wave was called we walked roughly one mile from the Village to the start line. Along the way people stopped to apply sunscreen, remove jackets/outer layers (which were donated to non-profits) and shake off any jitters.

And we’re off…

When the gun went off, thousands of runners cheered while taking off down the streets of Hopkinton. It was amazing to see people of all ages cheering, handing out orange slices and giving hifives to passing runners. Volunteers lined up at each mile to provide water, sports drinks and energy gels. I was having a blast running the race and was taking pictures and shooting cell phone video to help document key moments such as Wellesley College students kissing

The last mile of the race almost seemed like an out of body experience. My legs were tired from conquering Heartbreak Hill and the previous 25 miles. Knowing the finish line was near, I picked up the pace, digging in to find any energy I could muster. Heading left on Hereford, right on Bolyston (less than 1/4 mile from the end) I heard a familiar voice among the thousands screaming. It said “Go Brie, Go Brie.” I looked to the sideline where I saw my dad waving like a proud Papa. Seeing him gave me a boost, which helped to carry me across the finish line with an official time of 4:21:23 (about 50 minutes slower than my BQ time for those keeping track).

Getting to this point took dedication, several attempts to Boston Qualify and countless miles training in varying weather conditions (rain, sleet and yes, SNOW!) In past races, I focused on the finish time (PR’s) but for the 121st Boston Marathon my goal was to celebrate the finish. It was an accomplishment I worked hard to achieve so I wanted to appreciate every moment by taking in the sights and truly enjoying the experience.

We.did.it!… That’s what went through my head while crossing the Boston Marathon finish line. It was a memorable moment, which seemed to go in slow motion as I smiled, gave a thumbs up and soaked in the sounds of thousands of people cheering for runners. I beamed from ear to ear as a volunteer put the finisher’s medal around my neck and I thought about an unforgettable 26.2 mile journey.

Reflecting on it All For me, qualifying for and running the Boston marathon was a dream that took a long time to achieve (3+ years). Finally reaching that goal was a rewarding experience. Not only did I feel a sense of accomplishment I also learned about the importance of perseverance, persistence and hard work – keys to success. I hope this journey encourages others that no matter what, never lose sight of attaining your goals.

One of the most exciting things about the Junior League of Roanoke Valley are the incredible women who come in as new members and the way in which you see them blossom as volunteers and community members during their first year. Each experience for JLRV new members is designed to educate them about the JLRV, open the Roanoke Valley community to them, and allow them to be ALL IN getting them involved with the projects of the JLRV. Kayla Owata joined the JLRV in 2016 and just recently completed her new member year. She was ALL IN throughout the year and recently received the JLRV Rising Star Award, recognizing her for being ALL IN as a new member.

Share with us a little about you.

I was born in Germany into a military family so traveling became one of my favorite hobbies. I went to Virginia Tech for my undergraduate degree and then have furthered my studies at Radford University where I received my doctorate in physical therapy. Now I live in Ro24

anoke, and commute to Martinsville for my job as a physical therapist. I enjoy spending time with my “Noke” friends, going to support my Hokies, especially at Lane Stadium and Cassell Coliseum, and traveling to experience new cultures and traditions. I’m excited to see where my future in the league takes me!

What has your new member year in the JLRV be like?

My new member year in the Junior League was fantastic. I not only learned about the Roanoke Valley but I also met such driven and caring women.

NEW MEMBER SPOTLIGHT What has surprised you most about your new member year?

I knew the Junior League gave back to the community; however, I was very impressed to learn throughout my new member league about the numerous organizations that we started up such as the Ronald McDonald House to the different places we volunteer at such as Rescue Mission to achieve our goal to strengthen the lives of women and children.

What has been most rewarding to you in being part of the JLRV? The most rewarding aspect of the JLRV, personally, is the look and gratitude from others with voluntarism. From volunteering at the Rescue Mission to volunteering at the Blue Ridge Marathon, the sense of gratitude from not just the organizations but also the participants was unreal.

Before becoming part of the JLRV, how did you learn more about it?

I attended a JLRV open house and kickoff, which both gave sufficient information and really opened my eyes to the power of the JL and how a group of driven women can accomplish anything they set their mind to!

How has the JLRV new member experience added to your life?

I use the leadership skills I learned at the JL of Virginia Summit for my work life and it has informed my involvement with the JLRV.

What advice would you give to future new members?

One piece of advice that I would give new members is come in with open minds and let the league have a special place in your heart. Another piece of advice I would give New Members is to be all in. I know life gets busy but when you attend meetings, be attentive; at new member meetings and committee breakouts, step up and be a leader.

What do you look forward to most in your JLRV active member experience?

I am really looking forward to learning more about myself as well as my committee members as I embark as MET Co-Chair for my first active year. I look forward to meeting and learning more about the women in the league as well as learning more about how the JL leaves an impact in the Roanoke Valley with our various grant recipients and volunteer experiences that relate to our mission.

What did it mean to you to be awarded the “new member of the year� award?

Being awarded the New Member of the Year was very rewarding. It was a sign that my work and commitment with JL did not go unnoticed. Again to the future New Members, be all in and give your all, I promise you will not only learn more about yourself but you will make long lasting friendships as you give back to the community that is home.

BLUE RIDGE MARATHON

Getting Involved TO MAKE AN IMPACT

BY: ANGELA MILLS On April 22, the JLRV was ALL IN for the Blue Ridge Marathon. From serving as volunteers on the race route to running in the race to cheering on our fellow JLRV members, the JLRV was part of it all.

The Blue Ridge Marathon is known as “America’s Toughest Road Race” due to three significant climbs and descents as part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Needless to say, the race is not for the faint of heart and pushes your perseverance and strength. The race begins in downtown Roanoke heading up Mill Mountain then joining the Blue Ridge Parkway then on to climb the picturesque yet challenging Roanoke Mountain. At the highest point, runners have ascended 7,430 feet. Then the descent begins back down the mountain, bringing its own unique challenges with incredible views and the special treat of running by the Roanoke Star. Then the last ten miles comes down the old Mill Mountain road and the rolling hills towards downtown Roanoke.

A number of runners who took on the challenge and accomplished it were Junior League of Roanoke Valley members.

Anna Moncure and Kelsey Harrington both participated, along with others. Fellow JLRV members cheered them on for taking on this challenge.

A team of 25 active and new members came together to assist with the marathon, which needs over 500 volunteers each year. Our members gave out water and helped cheer on the runners. With this wonderful involvement, not only did the group help the event, they also earned $1,000 for the Junior League of Roanoke Valley to use to accomplish our own goals of serving the Roanoke Valley community.

JLRV member Kate Hailey loved the experience, sharing that “Volunteering for the Blue Ridge Marathon was such a treat! It was a great reminder to me what a wonderful, kind community we have in Roanoke. Despite the race getting rained out due to an impending thunderstorm, runners and volunteers were working together and cheering those who kept going on!” The JLRV was definitely ALL IN at this year’s Blue Ridge Marathon.

Chilled Chicken AND PASTA SALAD

As the temperatures are heating up this Spring and Summer, this recipe offers a nice and easy meal to help keep you cool. The Mediterranean flavors from the basil, artichokes and tomatoes keep the salad feeling fresh and light. Soon, juicy, ripe tomatoes will be in season making the flavors even more delightful.

The recipe is fairly simple to make,

and I think could even be customized with additional ingredients, such as feta or mozzarella cheese or varying the herbs in the onion dressing, to make it your own. It’s intended to be served cold, so it’s a great recipe to make ahead of time for a get together or even as meal prep for lunches during the week. I would imagine the pasta

salad would get even better after a day or two in the refrigerator as the flavors meld together. It would also be easy to double or triple the recipe to make for large groups to use for picnics, baby showers, potlucks, etc. I hope you enjoy this versatile recipe!

METHOD ONION DRESSING

SALAD

• 1 ½ Tbl. grated onion

• 4-6 chicken breasts

• 3 Tbl. red wine vinegar

• ¼ cup chopped onion

• 3 Tbl. lemon juice

• 2 ½ cups chicken broth

• 1 ½ Tbl. sugar

• 6 oz. uncooked vermicelli

• 1 ½ tsp. dried basil, crushed

• 1 (14 oz.) can artichoke hearts, drained, cut into quarters

• 1 ½ tsp. seasoned salt • 1/3 cup olive oil

• 1 pint cherry tomatoes, cut into halves

1. For the dressing, combine the onion, vinegar, lemon juice, sugar, basil, and seasoned salt in a bowl. Add the olive oil gradually, whisking to mix well. Chill, covered, in the refrigerator.

2. For the salad, simmer the chicken with the onion in the chicken broth in a saucepan for 45 min. or until tender. Remove the chicken from the broth; strain and reserve the broth. Cool the chicken and chop coarsely.

3. Break the pasta into 2-in. pieces. Bring the reserved broth to a boil in the saucepan and add the pasta. Cook until tender; drain.

4. Combine the chicken and pasta with the salad dressing in a bowl and mix gently. Add the artichoke hearts and toss to coat well. Chill, covered, in the refrigerator for 2 hours or longer. Add the cherry tomatoes at serving time and toss gently.

5. Serves 6-8
