President's Message 5
Each year the Education Task Force committee awards Ouachita Parish teachers with mini grants. We hosted a wonderful dinner and reception honoring 41 teachers and awarding a total of $18,897 00 Community Care Closets are now in 11 Ouachita Parish schools and have opened 1 new care closet in Richland Parish Many educators have expressed the difference these items have made in student attendance and success and our goal is to be in every school in Ouachita Parish within the next few years. The League prides itself on training volunteers. The Education and Training committee is tasked with this, and they did a wonderful job this year They hosted an internal MOVING WOMEN FORWARD event with many panelists and speakers that included sustaining and active members Its focus was League/Home Life balance and how to grow your league leadership. They also hosted a Grant Writing seminar with Grant Writing expert, Megan Rissinger. This was open to the public and was well attended. Community Service Outreach has kept us all very busy volunteering this year. Just a few of the volunteer opportunities were: Stuff A bus Christmas toy drive, Sarah’s Laughter, Cinderella Project, We Care, Church without Walls and more We look forward to doing even more in the community in the coming years thanks to our Community Impact committee who have researched tirelessly to streamline the efforts to achieve our leagues focus of helping “women and children at risk” This is narrowed down to 3 key impact areas: Financial literacy, health education and job training This year, we implemented a new program called “Adopt A Student” This program allows us to offer at risk students different items they may need. We have given all schools in Ouachita Parish the information to submit if they have a student in need Our hope is that this program will help meet these children’s basic needs in addition to what the care closets offer This may include clothing, uniforms, shoes etc Due to the overwhelming support of our sustainers, actives, and provisional members, we were able to raise over $5000. We are truly grateful for everyone’s generosity. Cotton Bayou Publications is comprised of our 3 amazing cookbooks The committee strives each year to continue to market our prized possessions Charlons is a legacy magazine that produces 2 issues a year to showcase the Junior League of Monroe’s achievements, community engagements and voluntarism by our dedicated members. Spring Market is the leagues largest fundraiser of the year. Profits from this event provide the majority of our financial framework for the entire year and determines what we are able to give back to the community I am so proud to say this year’s Spring Market raised over $103,000! It has not been all work and no play for us Junior Leaguers. Our Activities committee has given us fun and festive ways to fellowship with one another throughout the year from our Circus themed Back to the League bash, bimonthly socials at local restaurants, Christmas party and end of the league year Fiesta Much Love, Mary Francis Siggers President, 2021 2022 All of this could not have been accomplished without the knowledge and guidance of the outstanding 2021 2022 Board of Directors, Sustainers on Standby, Committee Chairmen and Members. I am filled with immense gratitude and thankfulness as I reflect upon this year and our 91 years of service to our community. It is my sincerest wish that our membership finds inspiration and courage to continue to serve in our community and face the tough issues in our community We owe it to the women who have served before us and the women who will follow us. Serving as the 91st President of the Junior League of Monroe has been an honor and has changed my life in many ways I have been blessed with this incredible opportunity and I am profoundly grateful and honored
I am humbled and honored to have led the strong, determined and powerhouse group of women within the Junior League. When I started this journey on June 1st, 2021, I was truly wondering how I was going to manage it all, I had a brand new 3 week old baby girl in addition to two other small children at home, building a house and working full time A dear friend told me to find a bible verse that would serve me and to keep it close to me during the year. Proverbs 31:25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; and she smiles at the future. This year, we set on an intentional course to embrace our culture of philanthropy, service and action The true value of a Junior League membership is that our work is a force multiplier for community impact My theme for the year… Give.Gain.Grow. Give your time, talent and resources. Gain experience, purpose and community Grow your leadership through the leagues impact My hope with my presidency is that we, collectively, were able to empower women to lead and be thechange for a positive impact in our community.
I smile as we look back at our year in review and all we have accomplished I’ve seen women around me persevere, think outside of the box, and do everything they can to give back to the community around us It’s truly humbling We accomplished so much this past year and I’d like to give a quick recap of the remarkable year we had. The Junior League women had an astounding year of service with over 12,000 combined volunteer hours That number is overwhelming to me and shows these women have a servant’s heart

The Provisionals have been busy this year! Beyond learning all the different committees, we focused on community and what volunteer hours can do. This group of Provisionals truly exceeded our expectations. We hope to continue this momentum into the upcoming year. We helped the Community Outreach committee put on one of their big events, WeCare, in November. The Provisionals experienced all the steps it takes to coordinate a major event. They made us incredibly proud with the outstanding help from Temika Cooks and Avery Dabbs. We have been having some fun in between working too! Our Christmas party was a hit: gumbo, hot chocolate, and jammies! What more could you want! We had a wonderful night of getting to know each other and who is competitive! have appreciated all our Active members pouring into Provisionals! to Community Outreach committee Smalley, Chair

In March 2020, when I began working from home due to ULM’s closure during the COVID 19 pandemic and my girls’ foray into virtual school, the days were long, almost endless at times. My oldest daughter, Nora, was in second grade. She’d recently started learning about money and fractions In an effort to pass the time and help her to understand the concept of fractions, we spent a lot of time in the kitchen. She became really good at cracking eggs. My middle daughter, Helen, did too. Ruby, who was 2 at the time, dropped a lot of eggs on the kitchen floor. There were tears over spilled milk. But, there was a lot of laughter too. In a time when we were apart from our family and friends, I was able to help my girls learn and enjoy time together in the kitchen, and we had yummy treats! Anyone who had kids at home during that time knows that appetites were insatiable and snacks were requested all day long. We tried out lots of new recipes, and were fortunate to have JLM’s three cookbooks on hand. For baking with the girls, Cooking in High Cotton was a favorite, as many recipes used ingredients we readily had in the pantry Bits o’ Brickle bars were loved by all. Nora even learned enough about reading recipes and baking to make a batch of chocolate chip cookies one day, with no assistance, while I was on a Zoom meeting. Thankfully, she waited for me to use the oven! Have you tried including your kids in the kitchen? Which recipes do you think would be a hit in your home? JLM’s Cotton Bayou Publications certainly offers a variety of recipes that are sure to please the palates.

Admissions had such a great recruiting xperience this year. We hosted a Meet the League event at Flying Heart Brewery in downtown West Monroe, and had such a great turn out! Lots of laughs, mingling, great pizza and the opportunity to share some of the highlights of being a part of the League. In January, we also had an open meeting for all potential new members to come experience what a League meeting is like; we had a major turnout! The League house was packed with current and potential members from beginning to end. Our last Meet the League event was on February 24th at the Lotus Club. Food and great discussions were had! During the League Life/ Home Life Balance track, Cydni Ellis Hanks (Past President), Ashanti Franklin Jones (Sustainer), and Kelsey Walden Bohl (Board Member) delivered tips to our members on balancing league life and home life effectively. We ended the night receiving advice on League Leadership led by Melissa Kiper Baldwin (Past President), Meghan Valentine Sharp (Past President), and Juanita Woods (Sustainer). We love to see our provisional and longstanding members, take on leadership roles within the league and community. In many cases, the leadership development that you learn in the Junior League of Monroe carries into your careers and outside interaction. During the leadership tract, members received tips on being successful leaders within the league.
Education and ETraining ducation and Training
Whether members desire to chair their first committee, apply for a board position, or develop additional leadership skills, this tract provided terrific knowledge. The event was informative and empowering. Thank you to our panelists for their commitment to helping our league members better understand balancing home life and league life and how league leadership can impact our future. Our education and training events provide training opportunities and leadership development for League membership. We invited members, sustainers, and the community to our Grant Writing 101 seminar that was held in February at the Junior League House. Meghan Risinger, MPA, led the event. This seminar provided skills and information about grant writing that taught individuals how to apply for grant-funded programs, including those provided by the Junior League of Monroe!
The Junior League of Monroe and the Education & Training Committee have been excited to bring programs and information to the league and the public all year. On Tuesday, November 16, 2021, the Education & Training Committee hosted a JLM University | Moving Women Forward event. A dynamic list of speakers and panelists focused on empowering league members through two focus areas: League/Life Balance and League Leadership. Even before the COVID 19 pandemic, juggling heavy workloads, managing responsibilities, taking care of our families, and squeezing in outside interests, including our love for volunteering within the league, was often overwhelming.

The second annual WE CARE Career Closet Shopping Day was held on November 6,2021 at the League House, and it was a huge success! The mission of Women Empowerment Career and Resource Education is to enable NELA women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and developmental tools to help women thrive in work and in life What started as the provisional project from the 2020 2021 Provisional class has now become a regular League event under the Community Outreach committee, and was chaired by Temika Loyd Cooks and Avery Dabbs. Donations were collected early in the fall from professional women in and out of the League and in our community, showing their support for our mission Local organizations, such as ARCO, were thrilled to share our event with women in need. Temika shared the event with the community on Louisiana Living and KNOE. The 2021 2022 Provisional class, led by Lauren Smalley, was vital to the set up, organization, and participation as volunteers for the event as a part of their provisional class project requirements

On Saturday morning, the League served twelve women from the community in need of professional attire and career enhancing resources The event began with a phenomenal presentation by Kelli Cole, giving our participants information on résumé etiquette and interviewing. Representatives from NOVA and Goodwill were present to provide job resources to the participants. Raising Cane’s also sponsored the event by providing refreshments and information on hiring to the participants Participants were then paired with a provisional as their personal shopper to help them find clothing and accessories to fit their professional needs.
Each participant was allowed to collect as many items as they needed, including suits, blouses, pants, skirts, and dresses, at no cost to them! All participants were also provided with a bag of goodies including notepads, pens, hygiene products, folders, business contacts, and more to help them feel confident and prepared for any professional endeavor! The response from the participants was overwhelmingly positive, and we feel so grateful and blessed to have filled this need in our community. We couldn’t have pulled it off without the help of our new provisional class! We can’t wait to see this event continue to grow next year!
Cinderella CProject inderella Project After not being able to host the Cinderella Project in 2021, we were even more excited to host this event this year!
