UPDATE — June 2020 As the 2019-2020 Junior League year is now completed, we should all be filled with pride for the incredible work done by the entirety of the membership involved with our Lubbock League. We worked together to move our mission forward and increase the impact we have on our community while we all faced trials, both professionally and personally, that could never be predicted in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The resilience evidenced by our membership to not only persist through, but also overcome adversity is the perfect representation of our strength and desire to make a difference.

I applaud each and every one of you, and challenge you to bring an even higher level of excitement and commitment as we all work together to make the 2020-2021 Junior League year the BEST yet!

UPDATE — April 2020 I originally wrote the first part of this letter in December 2019 for the In League publication.

Now in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis, we are all facing challenging moments, which are ultimately having a global impact. There was no way to ever anticipate the effect of a virus on our world as a whole. In addition, our Lubbock community has changed in so many ways as the effect of COVID-19 continues. The uncertainty surrounding this pandemic has caused such turmoil and anxiety that is felt by all.

In the midst of this crisis, it is reassuring to see how good people rise to the challenge of taking care of the needs of others. The foundation of the mission of the Junior League of Lubbock is to improve our community through the work of our volunteers.

At this time, our organization has been actively involved in looking for opportunities to provide assistance to local agencies/groups engaged in frontline involvement of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is not the time for accolades and publicity, but rather identifying a need and ensuring that the League is doing what we can to initiate solutions to address problems. Our membership can and will continue to make a difference as we face a crisis that will ultimately change how our world looks for the future.

My prayer is for the continued safety and security for our members, their families and our community, as we will be made stronger as a result of facing such adversity.

January 2020 Hello to all who work and support the Junior League of Lubbock!

We are now just past the halfway point of our League year, and so much 2019-2020

has been accomplished in such a short time.

To start the year off in September, our membership voted to request $100,000 from the Junior League of Lubbock Foundation in order to kick off the fundraising efforts to revitalize the Legacy Play Village. The timing could not have been more perfect as the JL Foundation AND Legacy Play Village originated 20 years ago. The members of our League can once again take pride in creating a safe place for children to play and further develop their social and motor skills.

We experienced our first General Meeting held in member homes back in October. The purpose of the change in location was to encourage both engagement of our members and the creation of stronger relationships. The thoughts and dreams of our members were carefully recorded and further work is taking place from your responses. We can look forward to another home meeting opportunity in March.

In November, we completed the 40th annual Holiday Happening and all I can think is, wow, what an amazing event! I had the opportunity to watch a group of 28 women work together for months as they problem solved and anticipated how to successfully plan the largest fundraiser of the Junior League.

The cohesiveness of the group and the support that they provided each other were truly inspiring, as they selflessly and tirelessly poured out their efforts for the kickoff of the holiday season. I know they are excited to announce their final amount raised in the spring.

Our Signature Projects continue to grow as we work to make an impact in the community. Our original Food2Kids project has officially become the South Plains Food2Kids program. I am so thankful to see how the membership of the Junior League continues to support the new nonprofit and serve local children by stuffing sacks for weekend consumption.

REFLECTIONS ON A YEAR INTERRUPTED Laura Hon was the perfect leader for this very unusual year. Grace under pressure, a willingness to listen and the courage to act were hallmarks of her leadership style. While the wise decisions made by her and the Executive Board in the face of the COVID-19 crisis ensured the health and safety of our members, she also found a creative way to celebrate the Junior League year and our members through the first virtual May Dinner. Laura’s calm and reassuring leadership style helped make this League year a success even in the face of unprecedented challenges. Serving as the Sustaining Advisor to the Executive Board was a privilege and honor. LOCAL AGENCIES BENEFIT FROM JLL GRANT FUNDING COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE GRANTS ARE DESIGNED TO HELP LOCAL AGENCIES ALLEVIATE EMERGENCY EXPENSES. THE LEAGUE’S COMMUNITY IMPACT COUNCIL EVALUATES THE APPLICATIONS IN THE FALL AND SPRING.

As part of its mission to improve the community, the Junior League of Lubbock provides Community Assistance Grants to local nonprofit organizations twice a year, during the fall and spring. Each semester with the approval of the Board of Directors, members of the Community Impact Council select organizations to award a portion of $10,000 in funding for the League’s Community Assistance Grants.

The goal of this grant assistance is to serve nonprofit organizations in the community by awarding them reimbursement funding for expenses incurred in the course of their operations. These expenses are often emergency and/or unexpected expenses. The Community Impact Council chose the following organizations for the 2019-2020 League year that are doing extraordinary work in the Lubbock and surrounding communities: Fall 2019: Lubbock Children’s Health Clinic: $1,299.98 ­— Lubbock Children’s Health Clinic serves any child who is in need of medical assistance, including vaccines, at a nominal fee or no cost. The funds awarded reimbursed the costs for two refrigerators for the north and east clinics used to store private and Texas Vaccines for Children Program vaccines.

CASA of the South Plains: $750.00 — CASA of the South Plains trains volunteer advocates to speak up for the best interest of children and youth who are victims of abuse and neglect and are part of the foster

care system. The funds awarded reimbursed the cost of purchases made from a promised donation that did not come to fruition.

Llano Estacado Silver Star Board: $1,785.00 — The Llano Estacado Silver Star Board assists Adult Protective Services in providing services to elderly or disabled adults who are subject to abuse, neglect or exploitation. The funds awarded reimbursed the cost of 14 air-conditioning units installed in the homes of APS clients who cannot afford air-conditioner replacement.

Lubbock Impact: $2,686.00 — Lubbock Impact serves the working poor and poverty stricken of the Lubbock community. The funds reimbursed the cost of 25 new exit signs for their building to bring them up to code with the Fire Marshal’s office.

Parenting Cottage: $1,739.51 — The Parenting Cottage provides services to families with children from birth to kindergarten with identified risk factors for abuse and neglect. The funds awarded partially reimbursed the cost of workstations for employees involved in providing prevention services for child abuse and neglect.

Scottish Rite Learning Center of West Texas: $1,739.51 — The Scottish Rite Learning Center of West Texas promotes dyslexia education programming by training students and teachers to help overcome this diagnosis. The funds awarded partially reimbursed the cost of a smartboard technology system for their Lubbock training center to allow them to offer a more interactive learning environment.

Spring 2020: Catholic Charities Diocese of Lubbock: $1,433.93 — Catholic Charities Diocese of Lubbock is a social service agency with a mission to serve and empower people to improve their lives. The organization does so through direct client assistance, parent empowerment programs, nutrition and wellness, youth and family services, an elderly outreach program, and more. The funds awarded reimbursed the cost of pharmaceutical prescriptions for clients who cannot afford their necessary medications.

Early Learning Centers of Lubbock: $824.07 — Early Learning Centers of Lubbock nurture young children and their families for successful futures by providing childcare to parents who need to work full time, basing their tuition on income and eligibility. The funds awarded reimbursed the cost of the unexpected expense to repair a broken drainpipe in the wall of their main office.

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Interprofessional Toy Fair and Expo: $2,692.00 — The Office of Interprofessional Education at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center hosts an annual Interprofessional Toy Fair and Expo for children age birth to age 3, who receive early intervention services for developmental delays and disabilities. At the Toy Fair, families who participated in educational toy demonstrations received a therapeutic toy appropriate to their child’s delay or

Committee works to connect volunteer service, focus area

D

id you know that the Junior League of Lubbock has a new committee devoted to childhood safety? Childhood safety was voted as the Junior League of Lubbock’s Focus Area for the years 2017-2022. Each member of the Community Focus Area Committee volunteers a total of 48 hours with nonprofit agencies whose missions align with childhood safety. Below are a few examples of the committee’s involvement.

Committee members participated in the United We Read event hosted by Lubbock Area United Way. This is an annual literacy event involving second graders from across Lubbock County. Committee members read to the students and led a craft activity.

Committee member Leanna Harris said, “The best part was seeing the excitement on the children’s faces while they created the craft and had people to love on them! I think they all loved the extra attention.”

Committee members also volunteered with Texas Boys Ranch and Caleb’s Closet. Committee member Ashley Howard said she finds this opportunity fun and rewarding.

“Caleb’s Closet provides clothing to children when they enter foster care,” Howard said. “Most of the chil-

dren enter foster care with only the clothes they are wearing, so Caleb’s Closet provides a duffel bag of clothing, pajamas, socks and underwear.

The duffel bag donation provides some normalcy to the children.

“I have worked with Caleb’s Closet sorting the clothing donations, moving tubs of clothing, and at the fall event for their foster families. I’ve worked with the Foster Care and Adoption Program at Texas Boys Ranch where I play and babysit the children while their foster parents are attending a training/support group. I cuddle the babies, play tag, hopscotch, or any other random game the children create.

Who can complain about that?”

Last but not least — a representative of the Community Focus Area Committee sits on the South Plains Child Abuse Coalition. The coalition meets monthly to discuss relevant issues and policies which relate to childhood safety on the South Plains as well as plan the annual GO BLUE Kickoff event and Child Abuse Prevention Conference in April.

These are just a few instances of how the Community Focus Area Committee is working diligently in the Lubbock community to make childhood safety a priority. If you have any suggestions or feedback, please contact the League.

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN EVENTS GET KIDS ACTIVE, TEACH HEALTHY EATING

Kids in the Kitchen provides healthy meals and education to the children in Lubbock and the surrounding areas. Kids in the Kitchen hosted and assisted with several events throughout the 20192020 year.

During the summer of 2019, Kids in the Kitchen hosted Camp Healthy Kids, a free camp for 21 firstthrough fifth-grade students at the Lubbock Dream Center. Campers learned about nutrition, safety, wellness and physical activity while having lots of fun. There were a variety of speakers and activities, all made possible by the support of many generous sponsors.

ed several education and fun games for the campers.

Campers also loved learning about safety from University Medical Center’s EMS and the Lubbock Police Department. The children learned about safety and the important roles of the police and their furry friends.

The campers also had the chance to tour police vehicles and they all enjoyed testing the lights, sirens and intercom.

Several different groups taught children about fitness. The campers enjoyed challenging players from the Coronado football team, the Texas Tech football team and the Tech volleyball team in relay races.

Office talked to the campers about food groups and there were yummy snacks each day to match the presentations. For grains, the campers enjoyed trail mix with Chex cereal, graham crackers, Cheerios and Craisins; for fruits and vegetables, the campers enjoyed veggie sticks with ranch dressing; and for dairy, campers made yogurt parfaits (Greek vanilla yogurt with frozen berries).

Representatives from Covenant BodyMind Initiative discussed with the campers about eating a variety of foods that have the colors of the rainbow. The campers also played a game to find different colored vegetables.

Campers enjoyed garden activities as well. They made their own pots out of newspaper and planted seeds with people from Christ The King Cathedral School Garden.

They watered their pots throughout the week and took them home at the end of camp. Campers also spent time at the Lubbock Dream Center Victory Garden, where they tasted several kinds of greens, including swiss chard, mizuna lettuce, bok choi and dill. Campers also helped prepare the beds and plant tomatoes, parsley and rosemary plants donated by the Texas Tech Greenhouse.

The Camp Healthy Kids committee and the full Kids in the Kitchen committee are thankful for all of our sponsors who made 2019 Camp Healthy Kids possible. We are grateful for your partnership in serving the Lubbock community • Happy State Bank donated backpacks and T-shirts.

• Rodriguez Painting donated jump ropes, collapsible water bottles, sidewalk chalk and bottles of bubbles.

• Harkins, Hancock and Johnston Dentistry donated toothbrushes and toothpaste.

• South Plains Food2Kids provided each camper with a Food2Kids snack sack on Friday for the weekend.

In addition to Camp Healthy Kids, the Kids in the Kitchen committee hosted a cooking class at the South Plains Food Bank GRUB Farm in November. Participants learned how to make maple-roasted butternut squash and spaghetti squash. All 20 participants were able to practice their kitchen skills and took home some great recipes.

Also in November, Kids in the Kitchen volunteers provided healthy snacks at the Fall Festival at Lubbock Cooper East Elementary. The volunteers made a healthy trail mix snack with the children and teachers.

Sarah began her membership in the Junior League of Dallas during the 2013-2014 league year and transferred to the Junior League Lubbock after moving to Lubbock. We are lucky to have Sarah as a member of the League!

Hometown: Austin College/Graduate School: Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting & finance from Texas Christian University; Master’s of Science in accounting from TCU Hobbies: Reading, shopping, learning to cook and attempting to garden Job Position: Director of Finance of United Supermarkets What do you do in your job position? What does a typical day or week look like in your job position? In my role I work with a great team responsible for executing payroll, facilities accounting, analysis, financial reporting and forecasting for the company. I work a lot in Excel, collaborate with other team members to solve problems, look for opportunities to gain efficiencies and improve processes. My job can be fast-paced and challenging, which I love about it!

Dream job: At another point in my life I’d love to teach at the college level.

Favorite quote: “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined.” — Henry David Thoreau Favorite sport: TCU football — Go Frogs!

Favorite childhood memory: When I was younger, my mother took me to Take Your Daughter to Work Day at her office. My mother worked at Dell Computers so our activity was to take apart and put back together a computer. I had zero interest in that activity so my mom let me pass out cookies to her entire team instead. I walked cubicle to cubicle introducing myself.

What is your favorite holiday and why? Thanksgiving — It is a time to gather with friends and family and to reflect on the blessings you’ve been given.

Favorite vacation destination: Canyon Ranch Tucson — my mother and I take a trip every year.

Favorite book and/or blog: I love to read and am always looking for good recommendations! My favorite book of all time is “Jane Eyre,” but I read a little bit of everything, but mostly fiction.

LEAGUE PRESENTS SCHOLARSHIP TO SHALLOWATER GRADUATE Each spring, the League awards a $2,500 Volunteer Service Award Scholarship to a female, college-bound, high school senior who has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to voluntarism.

With approval from the Board of Directors, members of the Community Impact Council selected Taylor Everitt of Shallowater High School to receive the Spring 2020 Scholarship.

Taylor was selected out of 20 exceptional applicants based on her volunteer activities, the demonstrated impact of her volunteer efforts, her commitment to voluntarism and her outstanding references.

Taylor has a resume filled with hours devoted to serving her community. In particular, Taylor has dedicated more than 1,400 hours of community service through her participation in 4-H with a specific focus on the senior community. On a weekly basis, Taylor provides meals, funds, gift baskets and holiday cards for this demographic.

Taylor also has a passion for young people and dedicated more than 200 hours of time working with elementary and middle school youth to share her passion for theater and the arts. She volunteered to teach numerous classes, one of which was a class of students with special needs, striving to make each student feel special.

Taylor’s 4-H Club manager describes Taylor as

“devoted to recognizing needs in our community and finding solutions to having those met.” Taylor’s theater director submitted a four-page letter of recommendation describing Taylor as humble, self-motivated and compassionate, and said she has “more moral character than any young person with whom I am acquainted.”

Taylor also has shown great initiative as a problem-solver to help those in need. This past winter, Taylor organized a coat and blanket drive and donated more than 200 items, serving 48 families in need of coats and blankets to keep them warm in the winter months. Likewise, after being told by the chief of the Volunteer Fire Department that the number of volunteers had been steadily declining, Taylor organized a meal rotation to provide meals to volunteer firefighters in her community.

In her application essay, Taylor wrote, “Serving my community has opened my eyes to many areas where people need help but are often overlooked. … In a society that has become self-serving and indifferent, I want people to know that there are still people out there that genuinely want to serve others.”

Taylor chose to attend Abilene Christian University this fall because of the school’s commitment to community service and she said she is looking forward to continuing her voluntarism through college and for the rest of her life.

HOLIDAY HAPPENING ’TIS THE SEASON

A 40TH ANNIVERSARY TO REMEMBER

I

n November 2019, the Junior League of Lubbock hosted its 40th Annual Holiday Happening event at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. A committee of 28 women worked to create a memorable five days that left attendees saying “’Tis the Season!”

The 2019 Holiday Happening committee was led

by Chair Kristin Teinert and Assistant Chair Andrea Watson. The ’Tis the Season committee created a picturesque atmosphere filled with Christmas trees, polar bears, penguins, lights, sparkles, Santa’s workshop and even snow.

This event serves as the longest-running fundraiser for the JLL and one of the biggest holiday shopping markets in Texas. Since 1979, the JLL has raised more than $7 million benefiting the League’s signature projects — currently Food2Kids, Kids in the Kitchen and SPARK — and contributing to Community Assistance

Grants, scholarships and other community initiatives.

In addition to the traditional special events such as Sneak Peek, Ladies’ Day, PJs and Pop-Tarts, Friday Night Out and Breakfast with Santa, this year’s Holiday Happening featured another memorable sight: the Hall of Aprons.

This nostalgic hall featured aprons of Holiday Happenings past and showed the various themes and styles of previous events. Former League members and sustainers graciously provided aprons from their years on committee to showcase in the Hall of Aprons. It was quite a sight to see pieces from the last 40 years of this special event all in one place.

Kids in the Kitchen completed its annual Camp Healthy Kids camp in June. It is sensational to see the new partnerships and events being created with other groups to continue sharing the message of healthy eating and exercise for our bodies. For instance, the continuation of our partnership with the South Plains Food Bank and the GRUB Farm has provided local children with opportunities to see how food goes from the farm to fork. Teaching children about preparation and consumption of fresh produce creates healthy, lifelong habits.

Our SPARK program continues to make an impact with local eighth-grade girls. The fostering of leadership skills in these young women can make a lifetime impact.

The value of creating relationships and being intentional in showing care to the young women in our program cannot be overlooked. It is important that we teach (and learn) how we can positively influence others outside our current circles. An additional takeaway that should not be overlooked is the fact that as adults we can and should continue to learn about and understand the

pressures teenagers face and provide guidance if possible in how to navigate such challenging issues.

Thus far in our League year, I have continued to learn and grow and rise to challenges that were definitely outside my comfort zone. As an educator, I try to conduct my life as a lifelong learner and working with the wonderful ladies of the Junior League of Lubbock has given me many opportunities to learn and grow since my Provisional year in 2007-2008.

As I reflect on what I want to accomplish personally this year both in my League work and my “other” life, I would invite you to consider how you have met your own goals and how we can finish strong. Questions and goals for myself are: Am I making an impact, are my words thoughtfully considered prior to speaking, am I modeling and showing love and respect for others, and am I truly modeling a Servant’s Heart to others? My prayer is that we will all hold each other accountable for the work we accomplish with the goal of making an impact within our community in the present, and future.

Favorite nonprofit organization(s) in Lubbock: There are so many I could list that are doing great works in our community, but I am mostly involved with the YWCA of Lubbock and the Salvation Army. I believe strongly in both of those organizations’ missions and am happy to volunteer my time there.

What do you like best about Lubbock? The people. Not originally being from Lubbock, I was quickly welcomed into the community and have met some of the most wonderful and sincere people here.

If you were the Lubbock mayor, what would you change, develop or promote in Lubbock? In the nearly six years I have been in Lubbock, it has been amazing to see the growth of Lubbock. I would continue to focus on affordable living, attracting companies to create jobs here, invest in education and develop community spaces people can gather.

Why did you join the League? I am a woman passionate about volunteering and serving my community. I desired to meet like-minded women and have some fun in the process.

What is your 2019-2020 League placement?

Please describe the placement. I am the League grant writer this year. I am responsible for applying for grants for each of our Signature Projects. It is rewarding to write a grant and be awarded funding!

If you could add a League placement, what would you add? I’d love to see the League develop a formal leadership development program for its members. This program would select a small number of participants each year and focus on identifying and building on their strengths, enhancing their leadership skills and preparing them for leadership both within the League and the Lubbock community.

What do you wish the Lubbock community knew about the League? The League women are volunteers ready to work. Set a task before us and we will accomplish it on time, well, and with a smile.

How do you hope to impact the Lubbock community through the League? The League allows me to be part of something bigger than myself. Through the League, the efforts of many make a larger impact than the efforts of one.

Sponsor, Market Street. Throughout the week, Market Street had Pop-Tarts available in their booth for purchase and donation to the South Plains Food2Kids program. This program helps to provide sacks of food to food-insecure elementary children in the Lubbock Independent School District.

Market Street collected 602 boxes of Pop-Tarts during the event. This translates to 2,408 sacks that can be filled with Pop-Tarts for children.

The Lubbock Memorial Civic Center was transformed into a winter wonderland that ushered in the holidays with shopping, tradition and special events that gave back to a more than worthy cause.

The Junior League of Lubbock is honored to host such an event with the support of our many community sponsors. Thank you, Lubbock, for a successful and memorable 40th Anniversary Holiday Happening!

As part of celebrating 40 years of tradition, the 2019 Holiday Happening Committee organized the Hall of Aprons to display the signature aprons worn by members of each committee through the years. Each apron featured a label with the year, theme and event chair.

Voice of Hope: Lubbock Rape Crisis Center: $3,550.00 Voice of Hope offers victims of sexual violence in Lubbock and surrounding communities with free crisis assistance and advocacy without discrimination, and promotes public awareness of sexual violence through outreach, activism, and education. The funds awarded reimbursed the unexpected expense of replacing the sewer line from its small headquarters building to the alley.

Lubbock Meals on Wheels: $1,500.00 Lubbock Meals on Wheels provides nutritious, home-delivered meals to those who are homebound, elderly or disabled and works to break the social isolation its clients experience by providing warm, caring and friendly contact through their volunteers. The funds awarded reimbursed the increased packaging cost used to deliver meals to its clients.

FOOD2KIDS MEETS NEEDS FOR CHILDREN, ADAPTS FOR FUTURE

Two community volunteers help stuff sacks during a South Plains Food2Kids shift. The Junior League has long relied on community groups to help supplement League volunteers for the shifts, an effort that has expanded exponentially with the formation of South Plains Food2Kids, an independent nonprofit organization.

Almost 15 years ago on a Monday morning, a Junior League of Lubbock member went to her child’s school and saw a student walk into an empty classroom. She followed the student quietly and found the student going through lunch boxes and backpacks looking for food. She realized the child had no food over the weekend and felt compelled to do something.

Based on this experience and many others, the League founded Food2Kids in 2006 to provide sacks of food to children who had no food over the weekend.

As one student wrote in a thank-you letter to the League, “I faced food insecurity for 11 years. This year my family has been doing better … food isn’t always there.”

The League has received thank-you notes from other similarly situated children. In the spring of 2018, Food2Kids received responses from 110 teachers stating how much they loved the Food2Kids program and how much their students needed the program. In addition, these teachers reported that when students have food during the weekend, their behavior improves in class on Monday.

In its first year, Food2Kids provided food sacks to an average of 500 children per week across eight schools. As of February 2019, Food2Kids sent around 1,992 sacks home with children each week across 24 Lubbock ISD schools.

Although Food2Kids grew an astonishing 298 percent over 13 years, the program is needed in other Lubbock ISD schools, including middle and high schools, and other local school districts. The League desired to continue and expand the program. However, the program’s growth has plateaued over the past few years due to budget limitations and volunteer capacity restrictions.

understood that in order for it to grow and serve more children, it needed to transition out of the Junior League of Lubbock’s oversight,” said Leslie Collins, Junior League of Lubbock Community Impact Vice President for 2019-2020 and a former Food2Kids chair.

The transition of Food2Kids was presented to the League’s membership in spring 2019. The membership voted to release the project to the newly formed South Plains Food2Kids organization.

“When Kacee and her family stepped forward, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief,” Collins said. “I have no doubt this is the right move for Food2Kids and can’t wait to see it grow under Kacee’s leadership.”

Hogg and her family signed a contract with the League to transfer the program’s ownership to a nonprofit named South Plains Food2Kids.

“I have been a chair of the Food2Kids program and involved in the League’s research committee to envision the next steps,” Hogg said. “The Food2Kids project is something I’ve been passionate about for several years.”

To assist with the transfer and success of the South Plains Food2Kids, the League has been providing funding and volunteers during the first year of the transition and will continue to do so over a phased, five-year period. However, the operations are now under the leadership of South Plains Food2Kids.

Hogg and her family provided a building and supplemental funding for marketing and growth. The funding provided by the League will gradually decrease over the next five years as the newly formed nonprofit begins to raise funds and grow to meet the need in the area.

The research committee that worked to envision the next steps identified three areas holding Food2Kids back: space, volunteers and money. In the first few months of South Plains Food2Kids’ formation, the new nonprofit addressed two of these three issues, space and volunteers.

South Plains Food2Kids moved into a new building in October 2019 without any disruption in service. Lubbock ISD transport continues to provide the majority of delivery to schools. With a new location, the new nonprofit can accommodate more volunteers to come help stuff sacks. For example, in the spring Food2Kids originally had 20 shifts scheduled and early in the semester 17 shifts had community groups signed up. Even after COVID-19 caused disruptions, Hogg and her team were able to find ways for volunteers to continue safely providing food sacks.

In the fall, nine groups brought almost 200 nonLeague members to shifts with most groups coming more than once. In January the shifts involved around 35-45 people each.

The one area remaining to work on is money. Despite a limited budget, South Plains Food2kids continues to feed more children than in previous years. While the number of sacks is close to the December 2018 totals, the number of sacks for December 2019 was up 13 percent from December 2017. In addition, Hogg has also has been able to find the budget to improve the nutritional content starting in January 2020 by switching out the juice box for shelf-stable chocolate milk from Fairlife, which adds protein and vitamin D. Finally, as part of those promised start-up funds, Hogg and her family also have purchased 500 new crates with the organization’s logo. Having this many crates will provide room for expansion and flexibility when double sacks are stuffed over holiday weeks. Hogg also is working with a Texas Tech class to develop a marketing plan.

In addition to this growth, South Plains Food2Kids has further expanded the program by partnering with Ropes ISD and plans to expand further across the South Plains. The League is looking forward to watching the new nonprofit continue to grow and expand to fight weekend hunger and help students go to school on Mondays ready to learn.

The 2020 Sustainer of the Year has a long history of volunteering and community involvement.

Sandy Anderson is the director of community relations for the Lubbock State Supported Living Center. She has served throughout the years on a variety of committees at her church and as a board member for several Lubbock nonprofit organizations, in addition to her work with the Junior League.

During her 10-plus years of service as an active member of the Junior League of Lubbock, she served on the Holiday Happening Committee, Fund Development and a variety of placements within the organization. As a sustainer she has remained active in the League by serving as the sustaining advisor for the Community Impact Council, Fund Development Ad Hoc Committee, Holiday Happening Sustaining Advisor and Provisional Membership Development Committee Sustaining Advisor.

She is one-of-a-kind and often is referred to as someone who inspires everyone around her with her volunteer spirit. She is a person obviously willing to do whatever is needed to get the job done — from cooking and serving turkey legs at the fair to getting down and dirty at Lone Star Decorating for Holiday Happening. She epitomizes the mission of our organization making an impact in her community and developing the potential of women.

This award recognizes a JLL active member who has truly gone above and beyond to improve the League and community. We are proud to recognize Kacee Hogg as our 2020 recipient of the Voluntarism Award. She supports members, programs and events outside of her placement with her positive attitude and leadership. Kacee joined league in 2011 with a heart for helping children in our community. With multiple placements in the Food2Kids program, she has been a huge force behind the Food2Kids program becoming its own nonprofit — South Plains Food2Kids — and has continued to serve our community’s children during the current pandemic. In a time when she could have taken a step back and saved funds for next year, she pushed forward — revamping volunteer schedules to comply with new safety guidelines and continuing to meet local needs.

This award recognizes a Junior League of Lubbock active member who has made noteworthy contributions to the Lubbock community through exceptional service to our community and/or through significant accomplishments in her professional career. This year’s Improving Our Community Award recipient is Sharon Robinson. In the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak, Sharon immediately identified an area of need for our local frontline medical staff. She worked with other League members and coordinated multiple agencies in the community to have 500 masks made and delivered to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

This award recognizes a Junior League active member or provisional member for their exceptional potential to lead our membership and community. Congratulations to Marissa-Anne Melakian as this year’s Developing Potential Shining Star recipient. Marissa certainly shined in our community by motivating our membership to meet a need for personal protective equipment for frontline medical personnel during the COVID-19 outbreak. She engaged those individuals with skills for the project: sewing, cutting, tying and taught those who wanted to learn and contribute to the project’s success. Through her leadership, more than 500 masks were donated to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. In addition to local recognition, Gov. Greg Abbott commended Sharon and Marissa-Anne for their contributions to healthcare workers on the front lines.

What is your favorite League memory? Year 1, Shift 1: SNIPSA (Spay Neuter Inject Protect of San Antonio). I showed up for a shift (that I felt I had to do because JLSA requirements are tough!) and I knew no one, had no idea what I was doing and soon ended up covered in blood. Hundreds of dogs and cats were delivered that day for services and I was very ill-equipped for that type of work. I met my very best friend in the whole world that day when she reached over and told me to sit down because I was turning gray. Come to find out, she was in nursing school and loved this type of thing. I swear she just glowed for all six hours of that shift and when she suggested we grab a relief drink afterward, I jumped at the chance. For the next four years of our League careers, we were inseparable, and to this day I always tell everyone about the heroes I’ve met in Junior League.

What was your favorite placement? Communications is my jam. I’ve served three different Leagues in this role and really think my talents have been best used in this type of work.

What are you taking with you from the League into your next volunteer role, career, etc.? I take my network. As a Sustainer, I have been fortunate to hone my skills over the last nine years (one Provisional year and eight Active years), so the people are really the value that I walk away with.

My first active year was the 30th anniversary of Holiday Happening and my last active year was the 40th anniversary. Over that time I was able to see a lot of changes, as well as a lot of things that stayed the same. It means a lot to me to have been a part of an event that starts the holiday season for so many people and is such a big part of our community for such a long time. My most favorite specific memory from Holiday Happening is my provisional year when I was able to help in the auction room. It was crazy and busy and had so much going on and I was sat at a computer and told to make it work correctly with the printer. That’s where my love for Holiday Happening started.

What was your favorite placement? Holiday Happening, without a doubt!

After serving on the committee in some form for seven years, it will always have a special place in my heart.

What are you taking with you from League to your next volunteer role, career, etc.? I think my years serving in the auction room and managing the donor information taught me a lot of things, like massive logistical and organizational skills at a level I never imagined. However, what I learned most from JLL overall is that I am capable of so much more than what I think. JLL empowered me to reach past some of my anxieties and fears and face new challenges with a joyous heart. Having a servant’s heart while serving in the community and across various League committees is a lesson that I will try to pass on to my daughter until she’s old enough to become a member. Watch out, PMDC Chair of 2027, because she’ll be coming!

What is your favorite league memory? Lunches with the Dunbar girls as part of the SPARK program were always such a treat. It always took a bad day and made it good or a good day and made it better to see their smiling faces, hear their laughter and their stories. I highly recommend that placement to all See Moving On, page 34 2019-2020

What was your favorite placement? I am fairly new to the Junior League of Lubbock, so my only placements were SPARK and Associate Active. SPARK was a fantastic experience. Again, I think it is a great spot for anyone who enjoys community outreach and female empowerment projects. I also spent my volunteer hours while on Associate Active status volunteering with High Point Village. I love this organization — all of it. The teachers, the students, the other volunteers. Please reach out and help with enrichment programs at High Point Village if you ever have the opportunity. What a joy to walk alongside this special group.

What are you taking with you from league into your next volunteer role, career, etc.? I love the idea of a collective commitment to the community. Volunteering is great. Volunteering alongside others who are also passionate and committed to supporting the community is special.

What is your favorite league memory? I have so many that it’s hard to pick just one. All of them revolve around Holiday Happening because I just love it so much. The fun times I’ve had with members of each committee I’ve been on are what I’ll treasure the most.

What was your favorite placement? Again, it’s all Holiday Happening related. I’ve been the HH Arrangements Chair twice and it just speaks to my soul.

You wouldn’t know it to look at my desk or my office at work, but I’m a planner/ organizer and a problem solver, so dealing with all of the logistics from when the ice truck is going to be delivered to when we need to plastic wrap trees for move out just make me happy. And I like a nice checklist!

What are you taking with you from league into your next volunteer role, career, etc.? I’ve learned so many skills while in League. Event planning, management, crisis management, etc., so I’m definitely taking some tangible things with me, but it’s also just the relationships and the people. I have made lifelong friends in Junior League and most of them are people that I probably never would have met if it weren’t for this organization.

Filling a Need LEAGUE MEMBERS COORDINATE EFFORTS TO MAKE FACIAL COVERINGS DURING EARLY STAGES OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC Courtesy of Adán Rubio, The Daily Toreador

T

o give back to the healthcare workers working to combat COVID-19, the Junior League of Lubbock donated masks to the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center on April 24.

Nearly 500 masks were delivered to the university’s Mask Project while about 400 more will be delivered in the future. Multiple bags full of masks that Junior League of Lubbock members handmade were delivered in

front of the Tech HSC building.

Sharon Robinson and Marissa-Anne Melakian represented the Junior League of Lubbock during this initial delivery.

“Being a physician’s spouse, I knew immediately we had some serious problems with (personal protective equipment) shortages in Lubbock,” Robinson said.

Within 24 hours of the university closing, Robinson said the Junior League of Lubbock needed to act. The group’s executive board met and called on members to sew masks.

“It’s just been amazing,” she said. “Just what we’ve been able to do in really two to three weeks.”

The Junior League of Lubbock is a partner with the West Texas 3D COVID-19 Relief Consortium, which is a group of university faculty and citizens concerned about the issues resulting from the pandemic, Robinson said.

Some masks were delivered Friday, while other masks, which are N95 masks, are being assembled.

“Those will go directly for use in the operating room, in the ICU, in COVID-positive units not only here, but in other hospitals,” she said.

Tech HSC External Relations, said she is coordinating the healthcare team initiative to help get supplies for front-line workers. She said the Junior League of Lubbock reached out to the university.

“There was an initial interest in the community helping our front-liners by sewing masks, and the Junior League of Lubbock was part of that group of people that took initiative to sew masks to donate to us,” she said.

Because of this, McCrory said they knew this would have to be a division of support for staff working at the front lines.

“This donation is not only important because of the quantity that they’re giving,” she said. “I think it shows a huge moral support from the community to help people who are working at the Health Sciences Center as well as those coming that may not have other resources to obtain masks.”

Simon Williams, associate dean for academic affairs in the Tech HSC School of Medicine, said he is one of the leaders of the COVID-19 Relief Consortium.

The consortium has been working with the Junior League of Lubbock for quite some time.

“We are thinking we’re going to have to go back to work in some stage,” he said regarding a reason why more PPE, especially masks, are needed.

The donation of masks will be a lifesaver for when faculty and staff will return to work, Williams said.

“The number of people who have stepped up, and this isn’t just here in Lubbock. This is in Amarillo, in Odessa, we have groups down in El Paso, in San Angelo and in Abilene,” he said. “The fact that people are just willing to give up their time, they donated their money, they donated resources, they donated materials. This is a unique community that we have in West Texas.”

The Junior League of Lubbock’s Foundation was established to provide funding to support the Junior League of Lubbock, Inc., community projects and maintenance for our headquarters.

A donation to the JLL Foundation is a tax-deductible donation that will continue to grow and assist in sustaining our League for future generations.

Your gift to either the Foundation Headquarters Fund or to the Foundation Community Fund can honor a fellow League member or special person through their accomplishments, friendship, anniversary, birth of a child, graduation or other special occasion. An acknowledgement is

sent to both the contributor and the person being honored. For a memorial gift, the card is sent to the family of the deceased.

Now that the corpus level of $500,000 has been reached, the Foundation is excited about the opportunity to use the interest income to help Junior League community projects and any necessary headquarters maintenance and/or renovations.

Although the corpus has been reached, we would like to remind everyone they can still donate to grow the balance further to make a greater impact in our community.
