President’s Message

Can you believe it is already March? This year has flown by for me! I hope everyone enjoyed the February General Meeting with our special guest, Vicki Clark. I think I have heard some version of “Servant Leadership” about three times now, and each time it renews my spirit and invigorates me to continue serving the community. She was very right when she said every member of JLGC is a leader. I feel confident that each of you could serve in every position in the organization and be successful. That being said, when Nominating/Placement starts placing the chair positions, please consider saying “YES!”. It wasn’t until I started getting into a leadership position that I really started to love being in the JLGC. We have positions for everyone—ones that require lots of time, to ones that require just a little. Our next big event on the horizon is our “Everyday Heroes 5K/10K Walk/Run” in League City. It will be held the morning of March 25th at the Lakes Professional Center near the intersection of Highway 96 and South Shore Harbour Boulevard. This will not only be a fundraiser for the League, but will also increase our visibility in northern Galveston County. We will have something for everyone, even if you are a non runner (like me!). You can enter just to walk, push a stroller, let your kids run in the 1K kids run, or simply volunteer. We will need lots of volunteers, so please look at the volunteer calendar online and sign up for a shift. We will also have a mini “Touch A Truck” where your kids (or you!) can see some neat trucks up close! Please remember that our March General Meeting is a week early due to Spring Break. It will be Monday, March 6th at Hometown Heroes Park. We will be doing a special “get to know you” exercise so come prepared to make a new friend! Happy Spring!

Chef Mary Bass created and served a 4 course meal, which was wonderful.... Best meal ever! The Island Pier Club bartenders and staff served delicious cocktails to accompany each course. A great time was had by all. Thank you to Kristen Lepo for hosting a wonderful event to benefit the League!

Fund Development/Holiday Ball 2016 Follow-up Thank you for taking the time to complete the 2016 Holiday Ball survey and lending your voice to help make it "the best Ball ever" each year. As our League's main source of income, we revisit it every few years to determine its effectiveness in aspects of engagement and profit. To date, we reviewed the 2016 Holiday Ball survey results and conducted additional market research. Findings include: *Members want an incentive for bringing in higher level sponsors. *Cost of living increased since the Ball ticket price was last increased. Budget for meal and decorating need a bump to maintain long-standing relationships with our Ball vendors. Ticket prices and sponsorship levels should rise comensurate with expenses. *Sponsor party costs exceed engagement in the event as it's designed. Nonmember sponsors indicate they want to be engaged in ways other than a party such as more exposure/attention at our events and a connection to who we are. We are in the process of determining next steps which will be communicated soon. Contact Courtney Carnes at clcarnes86@gmail.com with questions.

Membership Dues Membership dues are due no later than March 31st. Everyone should have received a dues statement, but if you have not please email jlgcfinance@gmail.com or call the TA Building if you need another copy.

Did You Know?

As March arrives, we are well on our way towards what always feels like the busiest part of the year – am I right? Spring Break is nearing but with it comes end-of-year activities. Spring Fun Run, the long Easter weekend, Prom, end-of-year banquets, finals, our March and April General Meetings – always packed with lots of business, Annual Dinner and other parties just to name a few! Personally, I’m excited because I’m getting to marry my best friend in May so as the clock ticks away without care or consideration for us all, I find the best way to proceed from here on out is to plan aheåad as much as possible! I keep a calendar on my smart phone but I also enjoy having my spiråal notebook calendar to reference as well. While I admit I spend a few minutes merging the two every couple days, I find this method works well for me – especially right now. I am a list-maker and planner, and I feel most in control of my life when I’ve had the opportunity to sit down and update myself. But I realize, this technique does not come naturally to all and with the end of the school and League year rapidly approaching, I’d like to offer some tips for managing your every-day tasks and creating lists, whether it’s to aid you in your career, your home life and all the inbetweens: 1. Find the right method of keeping your to-do lists: some people like putting tasks down by hand on tear-off papers, daily planners or A4 lists while others use Excel spreadsheets, Outlook bars or special software tools that can create tasks, track their performance, play sound notifications and perform other useful functions. 2. Prioritize tasks: put your tasks in order of importance/urgency and give higher priority to the tasks that get you closer to your goals. 3. Be realistic: check if you can really accomplish the task you are getting into. Be also sure that the task is actual for the planned period of time. 4. Be specific: each item on your list should be an understandable, short and measurable task. 5. Break down complex tasks into smaller manageable pieces and focus on one at a time. 6. Group and categorize similar tasks: for example create several todo lists by categories - purchases, meetings, events, etc.

14

7. Delegate your work: if there are other people available who can help you with your work, ask them to help you. 8. Be flexible and not too much detailed: remember that the tasks may sometimes be interrupted or delayed, so allow some variations or reserves for them. 9. Leave spaces for unexpected activities: you may not know exactly what you'll need to do, but if you plan the time to do it, then other important things will not get pushed out of the way when the demand arises. 10. Make to-do lists a daily record: at the end of the work day, take the time to review the day's accomplishments, cross them off of your list and plan your work for the next day.

Best of luck this Spring – remember, we’re all in this together! ~Elizabeth Cuchens

They really do love this blankets, it not only provides warmth but comfort too! Just a few reminders to check the JL calendar for various shifts for our upcoming events. In March, we will be helping Shriner's sort through Easter baskets and in April we be assisting at the Women's Conference. Please check out the calendar so specific dates and times. Thanks for all the wonderful service! Please contact Nancy Hernandez or Barbara Calvert with any questions.
