LETTER FROM

B

ELIEVE IN THE POWER OF WOMEN. What do you feel when you read those words? We feel that they encompass exactly what the Junior League of Greensboro represents- women leaders not only within our members, but within the community, believing in each other, encouraging each other, and lending a helping hand. As our members plan projects and volunteer with different organizations, they incorporate these words instinctively. That is what JLG’s foundation is built on. That is how the League has been able to contribute more than $3.5 million to the Greensboro community since 1928. As with any organization, the JLG often revisits how to fulfill the needs of the Greensboro community. Continuing to serve and to lead has been challenging, but we have believed in our potential, our strength, and our capability. Tyson Strandberg, the current JLG President, has brought the theme of, “Believe in the power of Women” into focus this year. Such a fitting, timeless theme. This theme has encouraged each of us in different ways and has brought meaning to our membership. There is power in believing in each other and especially women believing in women, an

unstoppable force! Our unstoppable force has shown this year through the programs and partnerships we built. We have made an impact with Women to Watch and trainings available to membership and the community, and through our community partners: The Kellin Foundation, Kids in the Kitchen, Church World Service Greensboro, Community Housing Solutions, Hands on Help (and through many other ways, which you will read about in this edition of the EverGreene Magazine). Our TouchA-Truck and Women’s Leadership Summit events were once again a huge success, as well as our Giving Day campaign. The Bargain Box Thrift Store is having its best year yet as they celebrate their 75th anniversary. We believe in the power of women. We believe in the strength of our membership. We believe in the power of the Junior League of Greensboro. The women in our League have put the needs of others first to create lasting community impact for us all.

MESSAGE

Tyson Strandberg President 2021-2022

THIS PAST YEAR, I have seen our members give back to the community, build relationships, contribute to the legacy of a historic organization, coordinate leadership opportunities, and develop the potential of women. I have witnessed the dedication of our members, community partners, and sponsors. I have seen the tireless efforts of our membership to make our community a better place. These women have taught me about the needs of our community, given me treasured friendships, and contributed to my development as a leader. My theme this year was “Believe in the power of Women.” Now, more than ever, I understand the impact our organization and the women within it have on our community and each other. That impact has come in many ways: COMMUNITY PROGRAMS: I have learned so much about the community 6

EVERGREENE | 2022

and the needs that face so many in our city and our region. For example, through our partnerships with Community Housing Solutions, it is clear that dry and safe homes are not always available and the need is prevalent. Through our partnership with The Kellin Foundation, it is clear that children and families need support and will continue to feel the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic for years and decades to come. Partnering with Church World Services, we’ve learned that Greensboro and Guilford County are home to many refugees starting a new life, oftentimes without any resources and while learning the English language. Finally, through our work with Kids in the Kitchen, it is clear that children today are less likely to know where food comes from, and this has been a meaningful, ongoing initiative to introduce a variety of fun and healthy snacks to a broad audience. RELATIONSHIPS: So many JLG participants have become friends through our working, planning, laughing (and sometimes grumbling) through the task-at-hand. The work was often difficult, but that helped create the bonds that I will carry with me into the future. It was also a pleasure to build relationships with our partners and sponsors. What a gift to be able to share the great work of the JLG! RESPECT FOR OUR HISTORY: One of the beautiful things about the JLG is our 94-year history, and thus the ensuing accomplishments. Projects such

as Cone Elementary, Gateway Education Center, and the Greensboro Science Center have made a lasting impact. I also had the pleasure of hearing from many past Presidents and Sustainer members who shared cherished memories from their time in the JLG. In our recent history, the 11th annual Touch-A-Truck and Women’s Leadership Summit proved successful for another year. I know our current and past members will continue to contribute to our legacy for many years to come. APPRECIATION FOR OUR TEAM: Allyson Boles, our Executive Vice President, and I were side-by-side every step of the way. Her commitment and dedication never wavered, and it was a pleasure to serve beside her. I felt the camaraderie and loyalty of our board members, the love and support of past presidents and sustainers, the “anything you need” attitude of our President-Elect, Leigh Anne Bullin, and the engagement of all members. I am so grateful for each of you! TRAINING & LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: I look back at a year in which I made mistakes, for sure, but I learned and grew through working with a talented team on ambitious projects. We adapted to the challenges of the pandemic and prepared

VALUE OF WOMEN LEADERS: It is so rewarding to see women step up into leadership roles in the community and show time and time again how impactful we are in making our city a better place. Our mark has been made on Greensboro, and the women leaders we continue to attract are incredible. We welcomed 22 new members this year, and I look forward to watching them thrive. You better believe in the power of women! As past President Carole Lesley stated in a League address in 1980, “Being President is a loaned opportunity. I’m eager to take advantage of it.” I did not take lightly the opportunity to serve alongside you. The truth is that I did get more than I gave thanks to the power of Women, a team of people sharing the mission and work of the Junior League, and our rich history and bright future. I appreciate the loaned opportunity and will always be proud to be a JLG member. It was truly my honor to serve.

MESSAGE Laura Wolf Sustainer President 2021-2022

The Sustainers have risen to the challenge of another year of plans disrupted by a pandemic. However, we did not let an unforeseen time deter us from our overall goal of keeping our group engaged and serving others. Our mantra has been to keep moving forward despite the glitches, and we made plans for all of our regular events this year, even though some had to be postponed or canceled. The Committee Kickoff to welcome new Sustainers became a Committee Wrap-Up, and the Fall Social became a Spring Social. Unfortunately, the Fall Luncheon and the Winter Cocktail Party had to be canceled, but we rolled the plans for these events over to next year’s calendar. Two virtual events and one popular shopping event were added to our fall schedule. We pivoted and have been resilient!

Sustainers certainly know firsthand from many years of life experiences that how we interpret, react, and bounce back from the crises of today define how we survive the crises of tomorrow. Flexibility with our schedule this year ensured that we prevailed. Even though our more senior members could not meet regularly in-person, we still successfully navigated these constraints. We managed to have three diverse events during the fall months. Actives were included in the first two events and were welcomed to our service event in March. It is important to note the vital role that Sustainers play in developing leadership skills among the active membership. By demonstrating the life lessons that they learned while juggling careers, raising families, and pursuing volunteer service, Sustainers are valuable mentors and positive influences for Actives during challenging times. Both now and going forward, Actives and Sustainers alike need this connection to impact our community in the greatest possible way. In September, ABBA Designs held a virtual floral arrangement class for us. Anne Hedges and Pat Vreeland generously donated their time in delivering the floral materials to each participant’s home, and we all came away with a new skill and a gorgeous arrangement. Anne Hedges also donated her time to the Schiffman’s Holiday Shopping event in October. Anne made delicious charcuterie cups to be enjoyed either at the event or at home afterwards. Sustainers who attended learned about Schiffman’s history. They also enjoyed champagne and charcuterie as they did some holiday shopping. Schiffman’s donated a generous percentage of the proceeds to the League. Our event in November was held virtually. Parker Wood, founder and executive director of BackPack Beginnings, enlightened us about the mission and accomplishments of this organization. It was then decided that Sustainers would support this organization with Hands on Help in the spring. 8

EVERGREENE | 2022

Our first in-person meeting at Well Spring in March was a success. We all enjoyed seeing each other after a long hiatus. Later in March, we assisted BackPack Beginnings by sorting and packing items in backpacks for families in need. Pam Smith and Mitzie Weatherly planned our Spring Social held in April at the Colonnades at Revolution Mill. Pam Ring and her committee planned our Spring Luncheon in May at the Greensboro Country Club. We will present the Woman of Distinction Awards for 2020, 2021, and 2022 at the May luncheon. Kelly McKee and her committee will wrap up the year by welcoming the new Sustainers and by thanking our Sustainer Committee at our final gathering. As we look to next year, Sustainers will be in great hands under the leadership of Daniela Helms. Daniela brings a wealth of League experience with her, and I look forward to enjoying all of the events with you next year. I encourage each of you to be an active participant and to reconnect in-person at future events. Thank you for your ongoing support of the Junior League of Greensboro. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve you as your Sustainer President. The League has demonstrated much resiliency this year, and I am very grateful to this wonderful group of women.

GMMs

Allyson Boles Executive Vice President 2021-2022

Like many other things this League year, planning and executing our six general membership meetings has caused us to adapt and think creatively. With many unknowns due to COVID-19, we planned to have all of our meetings with the options for members to attend in person or virtually.

fitness classes for our members in attendance and then we discussed the League’s governance structure and leadership positions within the League in hopes that members would have a better understanding of the League should they be interested in future leadership opportunities.

Our September GMM at The Colonnade at Revolution Mills kicked off the year with an interactive Culture Wheel Card Game, led by Jada Monica Drew, CEO of Social Designs. We also heard from Dr. Kelly Graves, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Kellin Foundation, one of our community partners this year.

The January GMM was held completely virtual, but it was still a fun meeting that included the Signature Fundraiser Committee sharing about the Designer Showhouse taking place in the 2022-2023 League year.

In October, Greensboro Day School hosted our GMM and we learned about GDS from Tracie Catlett, Head of School, and our own member Gillian Goodman, Lower School Director. Another one of our community partners, Mary Ellen Poe, the NC Development Coordinator for Church World Service, shared about the impact our League’s welcome team made with apartment setup for families. November brought another change of scenery as we held our GMM at O2 Fitness at Friendly Center. The team at O2 Fitness taught several

March was definitely one of my favorite GMMs this year! Two new actives, Chantel Simpson and Shannon Wiley, coordinated hosting the meeting at the NC A&T Farm Pavillion and they also planned a butter making activity for members during the social time. We had great in person attendance and the energy in the room was contagious! On May 9th we celebrated the year together at The Colonnade at Revolution Mill. This meeting was sponsored by American National Bank and Polliwogs Children’s Boutique. It was exciting to recap the League year and celebrate together!

CHURCH WORLD SERVICE Brittany Midyette Church World Service Chair 2021-2022

Welcoming Families Home The Junior League of Greensboro began a new partnership during the 2021-2022 League year with Church World Service Greensboro (CWSG). CWSG provides comprehensive case management and employment services aimed at empowering newly arrived refugees to build a foundation for long-term self-sufficiency and success in the United States. One service that CWSG provides is basic needs support by providing permanent housing for all refugees upon arrival to Greensboro. Through this partnership, the JLG served as a welcome team and committed to setting up four homes for refugee families. The home setup included providing all furniture, mattresses, linens, kitchenware, toiletries, and other basic household items. In addition to the home setup, the welcome team also provided hot meals to the families upon arrival to PTI airport and a fully stocked pantry and refrigerator upon move-in to their new home.

14 EVERGREENE | 2022

The welcome team committee was able to set up a safe and welcoming home for the following families: • A family of six that consisted of a mom, dad, uncle and three children (ages 16, 19, 20) who are originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (two, two-bedroom apartments) • A family of five that consisted of a grandmother and her four grandchildren (ages 8, 11, 13, 21) who are originally from Sudan (two-bedroom apartment) • A family of seven that consisted of a mom, dad and five children (ages 5, 10, 11, 12, 13) who are originally from Iraq (three-bedroom single family home) Providing homes and services to newly arrived families is a community effort. We thank all who have contributed their time and resources to this initiative.

KELLIN KIDS Austin Cox & Kim Riley Kellin Kids Co-Chairs 2021-2022

The Junior League of Greensboro has been fortunate to partner with The Kellin Foundation this year. The Kellin Foundation is a nonprofit organization that aims to build resilient children, families, and adults through behavioral health services, victim advocacy, and community outreach. Within the Kellin Foundation is the Kellin Kids program, which encourages kids to discover their passions and utilize their talents to make a difference in their community.

Kellin Kids hosted a pumpkin painting table at Touch-A-Truck that was such a hit that we quickly ran out of our 100+ pumpkins. Lastly, we helped build a Little Library to reside in front of The Kellin Foundation. The kids had a great time putting the library together and painting it however they pleased. While the pandemic has neccessitated us to adapt with how we would normally operate, we are looking forward to seeing our partnership with Kellin Kids grow in the future.

As community partners, JLG has provided financial and volunteer assistance for Kellin Kids events. Our first opportunity to work with the Kellin Foundation was at a training session on trauma and toxic stress, their impact on our lives, and how to mitigate these impacts. We kicked off the school year with “Back to School Rocks,” an event aimed at helping kids prepare for a successful school year. We practiced yoga, painted inspirational rocks, and made “calm-down” boxes complete with coloring books, jump ropes, and pop-it toys.

COMMUNITY HOUSING SOLUTIONS Meredith Hackathorn Community Housing Solutions Chair 2021-2022

Helping Homeowners in Need We were excited to welcome Community Housing Solutions (CHS) as one of our community partners again this year. CHS provides home repairs to homeowners who fall below specific income levels to make their homes warmer, drier, and safer. They also team up with Cone Health for the Aging Gracefully program to improve safety and mobility at home, allowing homeowners to safely stay in their homes longer. Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome, and no experience is required. The knowledgeable CHS staff are always present to teach and encourage volunteers to try something new. It’s a great way to help members of our community and maybe even learn some new skills along the way. I’ve been able to do some repairs on my own home from what I learned volunteering with CHS.

In November 2021 we worked on one of CHS’s biggest projects. We had a large group participate to begin major renovations for a homeowner who is part of the Aging Gracefully program. We cleaned up landscaping, cleared out everything inside the home, ripped up flooring, demoed the bathroom, painted, and began repairs to the outside of the home. This project continued for another five weeks with several groups around Greensboro volunteering. The goal was to get Ms. Rudd back home by Christmas; mission accomplished!

We completed five projects with CHS We are looking forward to helping more during the 2021-2022 League year. Projects homeowners in our community have warmer, included building accessibility ramps, drier, and safer homes in 2022 and 2023! painting, flooring replacement and repairs, porch railings and many other home repairs.

HANDS ON HELP Caitlin Braxton Hands on Help Chair 2021-2022

Helping our Community with Hands on Help The purpose of the Hands on Help committee is to serve additional non-profits, outside of our community partners, and to provide added “done-in-a-day” volunteer opportunities to League members. Bouncing back from a year of socially distanced projects, but still maintaining safety and health concerns, we completed over six projects this year. Hands on Help began the League year by partnering with the Greensboro Science Center, which hosts sensory nights for families in the community who may not be able to enjoy the facility otherwise. On two separate nights, we greeted guests, helped with directions, and assisted in games. We also provided fun color-changing cups and pop-it toys for the children. Following our service with the Greensboro Science Center, we assisted Family Service of Piedmont (FSP) in both November and April. FSP’s mission is to empower individuals and families to restore hope, achieve stability,

and thrive through quality support services, advocacy, and education. Our JLG volunteers helped clean out a storage room and turn it into an organized space where case workers can easily find clothing for the families in their programs. We also provided clothing racks, storage bins, and cleaning supplies. December was all about Santa for Hands on Help. Partnering with Senior Resources of Guilford, and their Santa for Seniors program, we assembled and donated 48 tote bags consisting of blankets, toiletries, puzzle books, flashlights, canned goods, and more. Additionally, we assisted the Kellin Foundation in March by setting up an art therapy room to help their clients foster healing and improve mental health and overall well-being. We are thankful to every one of our partners and volunteers throughout the year.

TOUCH-A-TRUCK Allyson Boles Executive Vice President 2021-2022

Touch-A-Truck Drives Into Another Successful Year On October 17, 2021, we hosted our 11th annual Touch-A-Truck, the second at Volvo Group North America’s campus. After a hiatus in 2020 due to COVID-19, it was great to safely bring the Greensboro community back together to support our mission. Touch-ATruck is an exciting community festival that provides an interactive, hands-on learning experience for children of all ages. The attendees have an opportunity to see and learn about all the vehicles and people that make our community work. On a beautiful fall day, more than 1,900 people enjoyed exploring 20 different types of vehicles along with activities, characters, and games. This year, we featured new things such as a crane from Guy M. Turner, a rideable wrecking ball from Fun Size Equipment, and a trolley from Triad Trolleys. As in the past, we had Volvo and Mack trucks, the Colgate Dental Bus, and emergency vehicles. Favorite characters like Dora, Chase, Doc, Olaf and Elsa walked around the event greeting and taking pictures with the kids. K9 Porter with the Greensboro Police Department was a huge hit and we’re so glad he came out this year.

It was great to have all of the JLG community partners represented and participating in activities with the attendees. We could not do the work we do in the community without sponsors like Volvo Group and all of the others who supported Touch-A-Truck monetarily and by bringing vehicles. Financially the event was a success, netting over $23,300. We also received more media coverage than ever before! WFMY News 2, Spectrum News, YES! Weekly, and the Greensboro News & Record all covered this wonderful JLG event. Thank you to everyone who attended, members who asked for sponsors and vehicles, all of those who donated items, and the volunteers at the event itself. We could not have done it without all of you, and we look forward to seeing you again in October 2023! JUNIOR LEAGUE OF GREENSBORO

KIDS IN THE KITCHEN Kayleigh Bullard & Grace Hollifield Co-Chairs 2021-2022

In the spring, we partnered with Greensboro Parks and Recreation for interactive events on Saturdays in LeBauer Park. These events were targeted toward elementary-age children and approximately 80 children attended each event. Two of the favorite snacks served at these sessions were “Make Your Own Trail Mix” and “Butterfly Snack Bags.” The Junior League of Greensboro’s Kids in the Kitchen (KITK) initiative is one of the many ways that our League members seek to make a difference in the Greensboro community. Children’s health and wellness has always been a significant focus of the JLG’s as it is important to educate kids and their parents on the importance of healthy eating habits in order to combat childhood obesity and the associated health risks. Kids in the Kitchen provides lessons and demonstrations around the preparation of healthy meals and snacks in partnership with local organizations. The interactive snack activities include quality and cost-efficient ingredients for all families, and the inperson sessions and portable snack bags are accompanied by educational materials and tips for making smarter eating choices. As in-person events resumed in the fall, the KITK team partnered with the Greensboro Boys and Girls Club and the JLG’s annual Touch-A-Truck event. We provided healthy, make-your-own snack bags and had a fun learning activity related to the snack.

22 EVERGREENE | 2022

Kids in the Kitchen had a great year getting out in the Greensboro community with exciting and innovative snack ideas. We look forward to growing our events, our reach and our partnerships in the next year!

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION Jillian Davis Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Chair 2021-2022

The League Reignited Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION…The Junior League welcomes all women who value our Mission. We are committed to inclusive environments of individuals, organizations, and communities. In recent years, the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI), of which the Junior League of Greensboro is an affiliate, has made a concerted effort to fully realize this commitment with demographic surveys, the AJLI 10-Day Racial Equity Challenge, Candid Conversations series, and more.

“Creating a diverse and inclusive organization is like building a house. It requires a plan, many different types of materials, expertise of all kinds, and continued care and maintenance.” ~Susan Danish- AJLI Executive Director, 2017.

The Junior League of Greensboro reignited its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion during the 2020-2021 League year with the creation of a DE&I Task Force, which consisted of members who expressed an interest in the work of creating a more diverse and inclusive League. We began our work by benchmarking the roles and strategic plans of other Leagues around the country on their diversity efforts. During the 2021-2022 League year, the Task Force was excited to continue its work as a committee. 24 EVERGREENE | 2022

Our committee has offered training in the DE&I space led by Nicole Smith and Jada Monica Drew, who spoke at the September GMM about encouraging “brave conversations” and led the fun, informative, and interactive Culture Wheel Card Game. During the summer, our committee participated in cultural training during the leadership retreat and introduced the mission of the committee to our Provisionals during their Super Saturday orientation. We have also actively participated in statewide initiatives with other AJLI members to address a range of inequities in our state. Our committee has been thrilled to present important DE&I content in the Monday Minute focused on educating, inspiring and helping members to have courageous conversations. Additionally, we have highlighted and supported locally-owned minority businesses and ended the year with another training led by Jada Monica Drew, CEO of Social Designs.

Equipping You to Make an Impact

The Women to Watch (W2W) seminars are a training series for members and the community. Designed in accordance with the Junior League of Greensboro’s mission statement, these events are reflective of the needs and interests of both the members and the League leadership. This year’s theme was “Equipping You to Make an Impact’’ and our goal was that attendees would walk away from each event with something to add to their toolkit for use in their professional, personal, and/or volunteer worlds. Each presentation was accompanied by an activity that put attendees’ new skills and knowledge to use. After an unpredictable 18 months, we were excited to welcome everyone back in-person, as well as provide a virtual attendance option.

like how to ask for a raise, how to command the room and hold an audience’s attention, and how to say no when necessary. In November, Jackie Jackson of Strategic Resources shone light on the strengths and power of being an entrepreneur while members completed a business plan draft for a future endeavor. Heavenly Walker of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce kicked off our spring semester with an overview of the benefits of supporting local and emceed a trivia game of local Chambermember businesses.

In September, members met at the Women’s Resource Center of Greensboro to hear from Margaret White, owner of Polliwogs Children’s Boutique, on the topic of personal branding. Participants drafted their own personal brand focusing on a mission, vision and values.

Our February session on fundraising, led by Ruth Heyd, a seasoned and experienced fund development director, was a great training leading up to Giving Day. The series wrapped up in March with a special panel on the pandemic’s impact on children and learning, hosted in collaboration with Greensboro Day School and Kellin Kids.

October welcomed back Joyce Richman of Joyce Richman and Associates, Ltd., who discussed confidence building and public speaking topics

We learned so much through this year’s W2W sessions and look forward to using these new skills for years to come!

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP SUMMIT Tyson Strandberg President 2021-2022

The Junior League of Greensboro was proud to host its 11th Annual Women’s Leadership Summit on April 22 & 29, 2022. Celebrating the theme of “Equipping You to Make an Impact,” attendees joined for both virtual and in-person speaker sessions. Friday, April 22 began with virtual speaker Kathie Niven, CEO of Biscuitville. The Elon ‘89 alumna joined the North Carolina company in 2011, first as Chief Brand Officer, and later promoted to President. Ms. Niven has brought tremendous success to her company, expanding Biscuitville to the Charlotte and Fayetteville markets, and advancing the company’s brand positioning, making it no wonder why Nation’s Restaurant News named Niven in their list of “2018 New Top Restaurant Executives.” Examining her long line of hard work and success as a trail-blazing woman, including marketing for Quizno’s, RTM/Arby’s Roast Beef Corporation, Burger King COrporation, and Krispy Kreme Corporation, Ms. Niven believes “we cannot limit our vision of what leadership may look like.” Attendees then heard from virtual speaker Dr. Mary Hemphill, an NC A&T graduate with over 15 years experience as a teacher, administrator, state director, and university professor. Dr. Hemphill is the first North

Carolina director of Computer Science and Technology Education, shining a light on gender and equity disparities in computer science, outside of her time as an adjunct professor at UNC Chapel Hill Dr. Hemphill is the CEO and founder of The Limitless Leader, a company that helps individuals ignite the leader in themselves, so they may better serve their community, company, and personal career. Lauren Bondurant Bargain Box Chair 2021-2022

The Comeback Is Greater Than The Setback The Bargain Box has had one of its best years to date, even in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The 2021-2022 League year began with a fashion show put on by our amazing summer interns. After multiple weeks of planning, our summer interns hosted the first-ever Bargain Box fashion show on July 25th. The interns utilized the clothing in the store to come up with different outfits that showcased our available pieces. The show was a great success, and everyone who attended had a blast. During the fall, the momentum didn’t slow down. On August 15th, we had our annual Fall Turnstock. Thanks to the Bargain Box committee and a fantastic group of volunteers, we had another flawless turnstock and our most successful preview sale to date. Volunteers came together to prepare the store for the event. To our surprise, customers were already forming a line outside at 4pm, despite the rain, nearly two hours before the event. In just a couple of hours, we sold $7,514 worth of merchandise, which was a record. We could not have done this without Randall, the Bargain Box Manager, and her amazing staff, volunteers, and all of the customers who came out and shopped. November was upon us before we knew it. This month we had our annual Christmas Open House, which, yet again, was our most successful sale to-date, with a profit of $2,121. Customers were waiting outside at 4pm to purchase all of their Christmas goodies. The holiday excitement continued with our annual visit from Santa on 28 EVERGREENE | 2022

December 18th. The kids had a blast hearing Santa’s stories and taking photos with him. In the spring, we were excited to begin our 75th anniversary year. As of 2022, the Bargain Box has been in operation for 75 years and remains the League’s longest ongoing fundraiser. To celebrate, we hosted our Spring Turnstock on February 20th. There were a lot of amazing spring clothes and accessories, and we thank the volunteers and customers who joined us. Finally, we have been excited to continue our partnership with the Women’s Resource Center throughout the year, which has been ongoing since 1999. Through our partnership, we provide $30,000-worth in vouchers to local women each year. These vouchers assist families in making a fresh start, having clothes for work, and finding high-quality clothing at affordable prices.

The Bargain Box has had a successful financial year thus far, and hopes to continue our success for years to come. As we continue celebrating our 75th anniversary in 2022, be on the lookout for a plethora of awesome sales and fun ways to celebrate. As always, thank you for your continued time and support of the League’s longest ongoing fundraiser.

Elysa Graham Giving Day Chair 2021-2022

Giving Day Success On March 8, 2022, the Junior League of Greensboro held its third annual Giving Day fundraiser. This year’s theme was aligned with our overall JLG theme of “Believe in the power of Women,” a nod to our incredible membership and the new and creative ways the women of the League have found to make a positive impact on the Greensboro community. Giving Day fundraisers are held by organizations around the world and primarily use social media and email to connect with stakeholders and supporters to build toward a common goal. Launched in 2020, the JLG’s Giving Day drew on the nostalgia of the days of the telethon to build a new fundraiser for our multigenerational membership.

THIS YEAR’S GIVING DAY FUNDRAISER RAISED OVER $16,000 THROUGH ONLINE DONATIONS AND PLEDGES. We are grateful for the ability to continue to support the Greensboro community because of these donations. We would like to thank every person who donated to our campaign, shared what the Junior League of Greensboro means to them, and helped us get the word out about Giving Day. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Since its inception, Giving Day has raised over $85,000 in support of the Junior League of Greensboro and its mission to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and improve our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Staying CONNECT-ed

downtown building development, and the roaring ’20s – was both entertaining and educational. An annual favorite is the beautiful holiday light display in the Sunset Hills neighborhood and we participated in the fun. With homemade hot chocolate in hand (thanks to our President Tyson Strandberg), we strolled the neighborhood and marveled at the brightly colored holiday lights. We admired the creative lighted balls while our conversations and laughter kept us warm. Certainly a night for the memory book!

Despite COVID, The CONNECTions committee had another year of creative planning and hosting fun (yet safe!) member events. While some of the events still looked a little different from previous years, it is always wonderful when JLG members can gather and enjoy each other’s company! We learned about perfuming during a fall candle-making class, where members mixed and matched scents to create their own custom perfumes. We also learned about proper wax melting and using our fragrances to create a perfect candle. Creativity and good smells were in full effect during this event! Exploring downtown while learning about Greensboro’s history was a spooky great time during the Ghost Tour! Our tour guide was full of interesting information about the city – and the cold air wasn’t the only thing giving this girl goosebumps. Learning about Greensboro’s history –including the Revolutionary War, 32 EVERGREENE | 2022

Attending a CONNECTions event is a fun way to meet other members and learn or try new things. The group’s get-togethers are great opportunities to explore Greensboro or to revisit some favorite spaces. I always look forward to these outings and the chance to create memories with fellow League members!

LEAGUE President’s Service Award Each year, the Junior League of Greensboro grants the President’s Service Award. This award honors a servant leader who puts the needs of others before her own, who always works for the best interest of the Junior League of Greensboro, and who does so without expectation of recognition. The recipient of this award for 2020-2021 was Brittany Midyette. While Brittany has been a dedicated League member and leader for many years, serving in roles such as Treasurer and Nominating Committee member, her commitment to the 2021 Women’s Leadership Summit was exceptional. When the task of hosting the Women’s Leadership Summit in a pandemic presented itself, she rose to the challenge and capably led her committee through the process of planning a series of virtual events, fundraising and obtaining sponsors, offering networking opportunities, and making sure attendees of each of the events left feeling just as empowered as they would have attending in-person. Her creativity and her hands-on leadership were crucial to the ultimate success of the series. Outside of the League, Brittany is a Senior Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager at Wells Fargo. She is both a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and was named one of Triad Business Journal’s 40 under 40 in 2020.

BRITTANY MIDYETTE Recipient of The President’s Service Award

In addition to being a dedicated League volunteer and powerful career woman, Brittany loves spending time with her family. She and her husband, Kyle, have two daughters, Clara and Elise. Brittany’s leadership, positivity and flexibility are unmatched and the JLG is stronger because of her service. We are so grateful to Brittany for her tireless devotion to the League, to Greensboro, and to her family.

Sustainer Woman of Distinction Each year the Junior League of Greensbor awards the JLG Sustainer Woman of Distinction Award to a deserving sustainer member, recognizing her as a sustaining member who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to the JLG through decades of continued service and support, and used her JLG training skills to promote voluntarism while making a significant impact on our community. Continued on Page 39 > 38 EVERGREENE | 2022

LEAGUE Kathleen Price Bryan Award The Kathleen Price Bryan Award is given annually to an active League member who has demonstrated outstanding volunteerism, leadership and service to her community, both within and outside of the Junior League. The 2020-21 recipient was Alejandra Marquez. Originally from Venezuela, Alejandra has been a member of the Junior League of Greensboro since 2012, when she moved to the United States so that her husband could pursue his MBA. Since then, she has served in a wide variety of roles, from Monday Minute Editor and chair of one of our community programs to sitting on the Board of Directors and the Nominating Committee. Outside of the League, Alejandra’s servant leadership continues to shine. She is involved with Reading Connections, an organization dedicated to improving literacy, something near and dear to her heart as she learned English upon moving to the U.S. Alejandra is also a leader within Diabetes Sisters, an organization providing education and support for women with diabetes.

ALEJANDRA MARQUEZ Recipient of The Kathleen Price Bryan Award

Alejandra grew up in Venezuela, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in production engineering from Universidad Simon Bolivar and a master’s degree in marketing. She and her husband, Juan, have a son named Lucas. In all she does, Alejandra gives her time, talent, energy, and resources to make her community a better place. We are better for knowing and serving beside her, and we are grateful for the impact she has made.

> Continued from Page 38 Due to COVID-19, we had to delay announcing our recipient for the 2021 year and will present this award at our Spring 2022 luncheon. We look forward to awarding our deserving sustainer member with this distinction.
