s I think about the year ahead, I am truly humbled to follow in the footsteps of our past leaders whose hard work, dedication and perseverance has advanced the League to where it is today. Throughout the League’s history, the decades of lessons learned, and experiences gained, our core mission has not changed: We are an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

The League’s impact is dependent on each individual piece connecting one another. You, alongside every New Member, Active Member and Sustaining Member, are a piece in the puzzle.

The 2019-2020 community projects are tied to our vision of women as catalysts for lasting community change in the areas of health, education and cultural development. Be on the look out for those signature red shirts making an impact in various organizations throughout Baton Rouge.

Our community impact would not be possible without the revenue generated from our fundraisers and financial support from all of our members. The fundraisers would not be possible without countless hours of service from you and your fellow volunteers executing these special JLBR events.

I have been often asked “how do you have time to do this?”

It is hard trying to balance my passions, my professional career, my family, and the League. Three important pieces to my puzzle are my children: my son, Jaylen (8), my daughter, Ria (6), and my dog, Milli (5). Through my service to the League, I am committed to teaching them about the importance of giving back. They keep me motivated to continue showing up and doing the hard work in the community because I am an example for them of what commitment looks like. Thank you for all you do to be an example to the pieces of the puzzle in your lives.

Being the Junior League type M

ore often than not, people are surprised when they find out I am a member of Junior League of Baton Rouge. “You don’t seem like the Junior League type,” they say. Truth be told, I didn’t think I was the Junior League type either until I attended my first informational meeting.

There, I recognized how different my perception of the organization was from reality. I was excited to find myself surrounded by women with whom I would not otherwise interact, from lawyers and physicians to business owners and stay-at-home moms, all eager to develop their potential and impact our community through service.

Gone are the days of the League solely representing a group of affluent white women. Today’s League encompasses a more diverse cross section of the community it serves—women living and working in all areas of the city, with new member classes growing each year at an exponential rate. In fact, our most recent new member class is the largest to date with 125 women of all ages and backgrounds—a testament to both the inclusivity of today’s League and the organization’s mission-centric reputation built by members before us.

In these pages, you’ll meet women who expand their civic engagement through the League with the purpose of driving change. Women who need to find their tribe and

cement their place in a new city. Women who are passionate about giving back but unsure of where to start. Women who generously devote their time and talents beyond their professional and family lives to improve the community in which they live.

During my term as Entre Nous editor, my goal is to share the reality of today’s Junior League by highlighting its true strength: its members. In order to achieve this, I will need your help. Change through action

olitical engagement and advocacy might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Junior League, but maybe it should be. League members all over the country have long been involved in independent political action, from Ruth Baker Pratt, the first woman to be elected to Congress from New York state, to Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Today, women serving as elected officials credit Junior League as an experience that helped train them to be successful leaders.

The League’s Diaper Bank committee works tirelessly to meet the community need, but the demand is far greater than we can supply. “We gave out 400,000 diapers last year and the Junior League of New Orleans gave out a little over a million diapers,” former Diaper Bank chair Danielle Sata10 JUNIORLEAGUEBR.ORG

Neva Butkus, a new member at the time, works as a policy analyst and lent her expertise to guide members through the step-by-step process, leading to Danielle testifying before the Senate Finance Committee and Junior League members going on record in support of the bill.

Being present to answer questions posed by legislators, like why cloth diapers aren’t a viable solution for low-income families, was a valuable opportunity for Junior League to dispel any myths about solutions that might eliminate the need for the bill.

The added benefit was the training opportunity for everyone involved. “For me,” Danielle says, “one of the most exciting things that came out of this was learning the process and really getting to see how it all works. You learn about these things as a kid, but being part of the process as an adult was very informative. I learned a lot.”

The process continued through League Day at the Capitol, presenting an opportunity for more members to meet directly with legislators and further advocate for the bill. Legislators might not have expected passionate appeals from our members, but the level of engagement demonstrated the importance of League constituents’ voices. “As a new member, it was inspiring to see my peers willing to challenge our legislators on these issues,” Neva says.

As session wrapped, the bill eventually failed but League members are optimistic about the future and are eager to participate if and when the bill is proposed again.

“I’m really hopeful. We have support going forward, and I think we stand a better chance now that we’ve learned the process and know what we’re doing and can garner more support throughout the Leagues for the state,” Danielle says. “We can only look forward, not back. Learn from our experience and move forward.”

Joy agrees, seeing how this experience could have significant long-term value for the League, especially as it relates to improving the community through the effective action. “When you can affect laws, that’s when lasting change happens.”

Moving forward While the tax exemption did not pass in the 2019 session, there are still ways members can make an impact, with both the Diaper Bank and by advocating for the individuals it serves.

SUPPORT THE DIAPER BANK League members aren’t the only ones who can be involved. Meeting the Mission with CAF W

ith East Baton Rouge Parish’s 19.1% poverty rate, fulfilling the Junior League of Baton Rouge’s mission by meeting critical needs of women and children in the Capital Region is more important than ever. Through every Community Assistance Fund (CAF) grant, we support organizations who provide opportunities outside of our core programs that dramatically impact lives in our community.

Being the primary caregiver for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and memory-related impairments is an arduous task that often results in significant emotional and physical exhaustion and isolation. To help combat these feelings, Alzheimer’s Services provides unique experiences for these individuals where they can connect with people who share the same caregiving journey, while de-stressing, reducing isolation by engaging socially with others, and reducing depression.

In today’s increasing global society, equipping students with the ability to communicate in another language is an invaluable necessity. To add in ease of communication, FLAIM students are immersed in learning from native speakers for 60-70% of the school day. Giving them opportunities to further develop those skills outside the classroom, like reading in another language, is critical to ensure they retain their knowledge. By expanding BR FLAIM’s library with books in French, Spanish, and Mandarin, they are able to enhance the immersion experience and reinforce the students’ cultural and academic development.

Enriching an individual’s life through art can be limiting when it comes to socioeconomic barriers. For students in underserved schools lacking access to professional symphony music, BRSO creates opportunity through its Musical Gateways Passport program. Each passport gives a student and their guardian the opportunity to experience musical expression through four Orchestral Series concerts, one Lamar Family Chamber Series concert, and three Louisiana Youth Orchestra concerts. This helps break down barriers that otherwise exist while nurturing a long-term appreciation for the arts.

Twin Oaks Elementary and River Oaks Elementary are two East Baton Rouge Parish schools with reading proficiency in the bottom 50%, both located in an area where the median household income is below the poverty line. Through the YMCA’s Afterschool Enrichment Program, enrolled students are given an opportunity for success through homework help, reading assistance, healthy eating tips and physical fitness activities, and other cultural and educational experiences they might not otherwise receive—all provided five days a week at the school.

By providing project-based learning centered around STEAAM, literacy, financial education and other core life skills, The CEO Mind Foundation’s Youth Empowerment Zone (YEZ) creates sustainable opportunities for underserved communities in the 70802 zip code. These initiatives take place year round for ages 10–18 through both after school activities and summer programs, and include evening events for parents and guardians. Through YEZ, participants gain personal and professional development that enables them to take control of their future and positively impact the world.

For single parents who work weekends, finding educational, affordable activities to keep your children engaged on Saturdays can be a challenge. The Charles W. Lamar Jr. YMCA provides this type of outlet for parents in the Melrose East community with activities targeted to children ages 6 to 16. Through the S.T.A.R.S. (Students That Are Reaching Success) Saturday Youth Outreach Project, children in this under-resourced neighborhood have a safe place to play outside, and can enjoy new experiences through arts and crafts, mentoring programs and field trips.

CORTANA KIWANIS LENDING LIBRARIES KIWANIS CLUB OF CORTANA BATON ROUGE FOUNDATION Created by Laymik from the Noun Project

To encourage reading and foster literacy, the Kiwanis Club of Cortana Baton Rouge Foundation is working to build and install Cortana Kiwanis Lending Libraries throughout the city. Each mini library will be stocked with 250–300 books with a wide variety of content for all ages to enjoy. Building community partnerships is another key component of these lending libraries—Kiwanis Club will join together with area churches and schools to target areas most in need of reading resources.

FAMILY SAFE HAVEN FAMILY SERVICES OF GREATER BATON ROUGE Created by Jonathan Meyer from the Noun Project

A lack of resources in our area can mean sending women and children suffering from domestic violence back into violent and dangerous situations. Family Safe Haven works to give individuals options when relocating to a safe environment with resources like safety planning, clinical treatment, supportive services, and emergency financial assistance for survivors of domestic violence—all within 24 hours of referral.

BACKPACK GREATER BATON ROUGE FOOD BANK For some students, school lunch might be their only source of a healthy, nutritious meal. So what happens when school isn’t in session? The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank’s BackPack program comes in to help, discreetly sending backpacks home with Pre-K through fifth grade students in high-poverty area schools. These backpacks, provided at no cost, are filled with 10–12 child-friendly, easy to prepare food items to last throughout the weekend. But BackPack doesn’t only mitigate food insufficiencies—studies show that programs like this help improve academic performance, and positively impact psychological development and overall well being.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM HERITAGE RANCH Created by ProSymbols from the Noun Project

For youth in crisis in the Baton Rouge area, Heritage Ranch provides housing, education, counseling, and life skills training—all close to home. Through its residential, treatment-based services, boys ages 10–18 work toward family reunification and general well being through a focus on wellness. The physical education program provides active recreation time outside of typical academic requirements, while providing educational enrichment opportunities through field trips and workforce development.

For many who suffer from domestic violence, options are limited when they want to leave. The Iris Survivor Resource Lab can help expand those options and provide a pathway to independence through both self-empowerment and financial stability. Located in a confidential safe house, survivors can utilize the space to continue their education, learn work skills and develop new skill sets which will improve their chance to obtain employment after leaving an abuser.

BACK TO SCHOOL GIVEAWAY JESS’ BRA CLOSET Created by Laurin Kraan

Starting a new school year is a costly experience for anyone, but imagine having to choose between supplies to bolster your daughter’s education and foundational undergarments. To support these parents, Jess’ Bra Closet hosts an annual Back to School Giveaway providing bras to girls and their mothers while educating them on the importance of fit and how to properly care for these new pieces. With new, functional bras, these women are able to start the year with necessities that encourage a healthy body image and improved self-esteem, and provide a boost in overall quality of life.

As funding for art programs in schools declines, programs like the LSU Museum of Art’s ArtWorks are critical for a holistic education. Once a month during the school year, LSU MOA partners with eight underserved schools to provide a creative, integrated visual art learning opportunity Pre-K through 5th grade elementary students. Through both ob-

ject-based discussions in the museum and hands-on art making activities, students are able to engage with art outside of their typical classroom setting with the added benefit of encouraging expression of ideas while refining listening, public speaking, and vocabulary skills in a supportive environment.

Utilizing a 23-week curriculum integrating role-play, journaling, stories, discussion, technology, songs, and games, Manners of the Heart is guiding students at Mayfair Laboratory School in social and emotional learning. This approach has shown documented improvement in academic success and a decrease in disciplinary referrals, with long-term benefits on community engagement and life-changing behaviors. In addition to the 300 Pre-K through 5th grade students impacted, the program integrates community education as well, aiding parents/caregivers and teachers in developing alongside the students.

Learning to ride a bike might be a right of passage for most but children with disabilities are often excluded—until now.

The McLindon Family Foundation partners with a child’s physical or occupational therapist to obtain adaptive bikes customized for each individual’s needs. These specialized bikes, often not covered by insurance and ranging from $800–$5,000, provide a safe activity for children who lack access to proper exercise equipment—a critical need when childhood obesity rates for children with disabilities are 38% higher than for those without.

SUPPORTING WOMEN THEATRE PROFESSIONALS PLAYMAKERS OF BATON ROUGE Created by Lona Muoi

For women interested in both leadership and the performing arts, Playmakers provides a valuable training opportunity. At present, 85% of its Board of Directors are women who gain hands-on skills related to production, marketing, curriculum development, and grant writing, while also being active in the educational development of Baton Rouge’s young creative community. This summer, Playmakers specifically aligned with the League’s mission of developing the potential of women through a performance of Sleeping Beauty, produced by an all-female team.

STUDENT TECHNOLOGY ST. LILLIAN ACADEMY Created by Vectors Market

45% of the students at St. Lillian Academy are non-verbal or emerging verbal communicators, and in order to provide opportunities to these future independent, active members of our community, the school has to utilize innovative technologies. As students return to school this fall, they will be working with the staff speech therapist using an augmented communication literacy project, implemented with the use of iPads. By combining this educational experience with intervention services, students prepare for a productive life in a world that does not always embrace learning differences.

With a mission-centric focus of developing women both within and outside its membership, Junior League of Baton Rouge launches its inaugural Women’s Leadership Conference with keynote speaker Laila Ali.

D

eveloping the potential of women is a core component of the Junior League mission, making the inaugural Women’s Leadership Conference a long overdue initiative.

“We are one of the premier women’s organizations in Baton Rouge that continues to train women as leaders in their respective lives while making an impact on our community,” president Namisha Patel-Vasanji says. “What better way to celebrate the JLBR mission than to provide a conference with training sessions from amazing community leaders, a poverty simulation hosted by the Diversity and Cultural Inclusion committee, and an empowering keynote from an inspiring speaker.“ With a professional and personal track, attendees can pick and choose workshops that most align with their interests.

Breakout sessions include topics like serving on nonprofit boards of directors, parenting, confidence, female empowerment, personal branding, running for political office, and financial advice, with more in the works.

The conference is intended to be a catalyst for developing all women in our community, even if they aren’t a JLBR member. The event is open to the public, giving members a perfect opportunity to introduce women to the League while sharing in the personal and professional development experience. “We want women to come away from the conference feeling inspired, empowered and motivated,” conference chair Tristi Charpentier says.

Concluding the event will be an engaging keynote delivered by speaker Laila Ali, four-time undefeated boxing world champion and most successful female boxer in history. In addition to being an elite athlete and daughter of legend Muhammed Ali, Laila is a mother, wife, fitness and nutrition expert, cooking enthusiast, and a lifestyle brand CEO. She uses her platform to empower women all over the world to find their strength, spirit, and power within. In sharing her story both in and outside the ring, she models a way to achieve success through courage, strength, drive, and a positive mindset—the mindset of a champion.

By pairing Laila’s inspiring message with the wide variety of workshops, the conference committee hopes the event will have a lasting impact, giving women the tools to achieve their potential and empower them to become leaders in their own lives and communities.

“I joined the League after a co-worker at the time, Lynn Howard, encouraged me to get involved. I moved here nine years ago and always wanted to get involved in volunteering and being active in the community, I just didn’t really know how to go about it. I loved that JLBR focused on a variety of projects helping the youth in the community.

It’s a bonus that it also provides many wonderful leadership training opportunities. The League is a place where you will meet empowering women and develop life-long friendships. I have enjoyed my time in the League and have learned a lot in a short time!”

Two, to meet new people, expand my network and engage and interact with women outside my circle of friends and colleagues. hrough the course of their careers, Beth O’Quinn (pictured left) and Summer Steib (pictured right) have become seasoned professionals in the diversity and inclusion space and we’re fortunate enough to have them both willing to continue their service to the League as sustaining advisors for this year’s Diversity and Cultural Inclusion Committee (DCI). Below, they shared a little about both their professional and League experiences, as well as some ways we can continue to be a welcoming, inclusive organization to all women in our community.

Tell us about your League experience.

Beth: I joined the League back in the early ‘90s. I have always been someone who is interested in serving in our community, and it was a terrific way to go volunteer with friends. In that time, I’ve learned a lot about the needs of our community. I continue to be amazed at the sustainability of the League and how it has grown, how much it has given back to our community over the years, and how diverse it is becoming!

it’s critically important that we, individually and collectively, have the skills, knowledge, and training to ensure that we are living up to our mission.

Beth: I have worked for IBM in Baton Rouge for over 30 years. Since its inception in 1911, IBM has been committed to a diverse workforce and continues to lead in this area with initiatives such as our Be Equal campaign, which focuses on gender equality; Neurodiversity@IBM, which focuses on hiring individuals on the autism spectrum; and our LGBT+ Ally program. Having worked at IBM so long, this culture of diversity and inclusion has become a part of me as well. When considering giving back to the League as a sustaining member, diversity immediately came to mind.

Summer: I joined the Junior League the first year I could.

I was moving to Tuscaloosa, Alabama and knew no one, and I knew that the Junior League would be a great way for me to connect with my community. In 2005, I moved back to Baton Rouge after having been away for over 10 years.

How can active and sustaining members be more engaged with DCI? Summer: I think members can support the initiatives coming out of DCI. We have a phenomenal committee this year and lots of exciting things planned! In addition to this, I think that members can individually educate themselves on issues of diversity and inclusion.

Beth: While the League has become and will continue to be more diverse, our DCI committee is focusing on the inclusion part. Innovation and great ideas come when everyone at the table brings a different opinion and perspective. Doing this will positively impact our engagement in our community.

Be on the lookout for our events and commit to signing up to at least one of them each year. If you have an idea on how we can promote diversity and inclusion within the League, reach out to a DCI committee member. I challenge each League member to get to know another member who they don’t currently know well, who doesn’t look like them and have respectful conversations. Celebrate our differences and what that brings to the League and to the Community!

WHITNEY PLANTATION TOUR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2019 We’ve probably all been on a Louisiana plantation tour or two, but Whitney’s guides provide an often ignored perspective by focusing exclusively on the experiences of enslaved people. Following the tour, participants will regroup at the League office and have a discussion about the tour. Spots are limited and you will need to RSVP to attend, so be on the lookout for the announcement via Your League This Week and JLBR’s social media. Open to all new, active, and sustaining members.

POVERTY SIMULATION FRIDAY, MARCH 13, 2020 (during the Women’s Leadership Conference) Many of our initiatives focus on underserved populations living at or below the poverty line, but how much do we know about actual day-to-day experiences for those individuals? Join DCI for the second Poverty Simulation of the year to gain some insight.

“For those serving our community,” Beth says, “the Poverty Simulation is a powerful way to have a small experience of what people in poverty experience on a daily basis.”
