Naniniwala ka ba?

“I believe that a journalist should write only what he holds in his heart to be true.”

Naniniwala ako sa propesyon ng pamamahayag at naniniwala rin akong sa panahong ganito’t hinahamon ang kalayaa’t kamalayan ng bawat tao, tayo, tayong mga dyorno ang siyang may responsibilidad upang suungin ang sakuna’t hanapin ang dapat; ipahayag, ibalita’t ipalaganap ito nang walang pagsasala, sa lahat—kahit na kanino.

Kasalanan para sa ating mga manunulat ang pagyuko sa makapangyarihang mga taong nais ikubli ang tunay at totoo. Kasalanan para sa ating mga mamamahayag pampaaralan ang tumalima sa mga gurong nais ibaba ang kalidad ng pagbabalita dahil natatapakan nito ang kanilang paniniwala.

Sa nagdaang dalawang taon, lalong pinaigting ng Junior Dawn ang paniniwalang ito— wala dapat tayong katakutan sa ating pakikipaglaban para sa katotohanan. Bagama’t may mga hamon tayong hinarap, hindi pa rin tayo tumigil sa pagsubok na maglathala ng mga istoryang totoo, dahil hindi lamang para sa atin ang mga artikulong ating inilalabas—ang pagbabalitang Junior Dawn ay para sa lahat.

Para ito sa mga guro’t mag-aaral ng pamantasan. Dahil tayo ang dapat agaran nilang pinagkukunan ng mga mahahalagang istorya, sa loob o labas man ng pamantasan.

Tangan natin ang obligasyong ibahagi ang mga impormasyong tutulong sa kanila sa pagsasakatuparan ng kanilang mga responsibilidad bilang mga manggagawa, nagpapakadalubhasa, magulang, anak, at makabayan. Kung wala tayo at ang integridad sa ating ibinabalita, paano sila?

Para ito sa progresibong pagkilos para labanan ang daluyong ng represyon. Dawn, ano pa’t binansagan tayong Junior Dawn kung hindi natin isasabuhay ang ating pagpapakahulugan? Tayo ang pagsikat ng panibagong umaga, ang ating mga panulat ay mga kalasag na dapat tumutulong sa pagbuo ng mas makataong mundo para sa lahat. Tayo at ang ating mga balita ay kasangkot sa pagbuo ng mas kritikal na lipunang huhubog sa bayang tapat, makatarungan, at para sa lahat.

Ang pagbabalitang Junior Dawn ay pag–aalay nating mga mandirigma sa Silangan ng ating husay, lakas, at prinsipyo sa iba’t–ibang labang hinaharap ng bawat Pilipino.

Dahil hinuhubog tayo para sa atin at para sa kanila; para pagsilbihan ang bayan nating sinisinta.

Naniniwala ako sa potensyal ng mga susunod manunulat sa amin. Hangad kong kanilang mahihigitan ang mga nangyari nang pag-unlad at paglaya ng pahayagang pampaaralan ng ating pamantasan. Darating ang panahon na tunay na mabibigyang buhay ang katotohan, hustisya, at kalayaan na ibinabantayog ng iniibig nating Junior Dawn – Manila.

Being a student writer or journalist is an incredible opportunity. It allows me to express my thoughts and ideas, share knowledge, and inform people about current events. As a student writer, I have the chance to make a difference in the world through writing. My works can inspire others, create change, and influence the way people think. Being a student writer or journalist is not just about writing – it’s about making a meaningful impact.

As a student writer, I was beyond grateful to be part of the Junior Dawn Journalist Club in UE. I had a wonderful experience on joining this club and being an officer ever since. This is the chapter of my life where I have discovered new things, learned from other people, and grown as a person with lots of interest. This growth and development provide valuable insights that I can bring with me or share with others through writing.

Writing is not just about putting words on paper. It is about conveying a message, telling a story, and making a connection with your readers. As a student writer, Junior Dawn gave me the opportunity to explore different writing styles, experiment with different genres, and find my own category.

Being a student journalist is even more exciting.

Being a student writer or journalist is not always easy. Writing can be a solitary activity, and it can be hard to find the motivation to keep going. Journalism can be stressful, and it can be challenging to balance the need for speed with the need for accuracy. But the rewards are worth it. The satisfaction of seeing your words in print, the thrill of breaking a big story, the joy of connecting with readers – these are all things that make it worthwhile. Writers and journalists have been shaping the world for centuries. And I am proud to carry on that legacy.

Finally, being part of the Junior Dawn Club allows me to express myself, share my knowledge, and have an impact on the world. Writing and journalism are not just about the words – they are about the people behind them. I am, and always grateful for having to work with my co officers and seniors in my year.

As a student writer or journalist, being part of the Junior Dawn Club will not just help you hone your knowledge, experience and skills, but will also give you the opportunity to learn and bond with other people. So embrace the opportunity, find your voice, and write your way to success. Remember, Journalism is not just a job – it is a calling. Padayon Journalist!

IN RETROSPECT JOURNEY WITH UE Mariah Louise Miciano A few days ago, I went to my previous school to get my credentials for college applications. While I was at the guard house, the guard asked me where I'm currently studying and I told them it was UE. Upon hearing my response, he suddenly smiled and told me the UE is the home of warriors. I was very flattered because I didn't realize it was really known for its warriors until that day. And on the same day, the tricycle driver that picked me up also asked where I study and when I answered, he told me stories of known achievers and individuals who studied at UE, he also expressed how he's looking forward to what I'm about to become. Because of these things I realized that when someone hears "UE" or "University of the East", the first thing that comes to their mind is "warriors". So this made me wonder, what makes UE the home of warriors?

UE doesn't merely focus on the academic aspect but also on every aspect of the skills and potential one may have. They hasten each of these skills and make sure that the students are guided all throughout the process. Consequently, students are honed and become the best version of themselves and achieve everything they worked hard for.

This makes UE the home of the warriors. It may just be a simple school for others but for warriors like me, it is a place where one can be guided, molded, encouraged, empowered, trained, and valued throughout their journey. It is a place where someone can be someone they never thought they'd be. A place where someone can be carefree and at the same time responsible about who and what they want to become. A place where we are assured and secured that we would have the best tomorrow. And lastly, a place where someone can be anyone they want without the fear of being alone. These things are instilled and tattooed within our minds and hearts that we can carry for the rest of our live. Thus, the University of the East is indeed a home where we can rely on.

IN RETROSPECT NAVIGATING THE EAST: EMBRACING CHANGE AND GROWTH Saskia Jaminola

Change is an inevitable part of life, and embracing the new is essential for development and growth. Life is full of transitions: starting senior year, moving to a different city, and entering a new stage of life. The East feels new. Being a warrior and embracing these transitions became transformative. Opportunities serve as catalysts and foster a sense of empowerment that propels us forward and unlocks our true potential. These transformative moments allow me to step out of my comfort zone, learn from diverse experiences, and embrace the unknown. I have witnessed firsthand how they have acted in shaping my character, expanding my skills, and fostering a relentless pursuit of self-improvement. Change often challenges our comfort zones and hardships may appear daunting and overwhelming at first, they are not roadblocks on our journey but rather stepping stones toward personal growth.

One pivotal opportunity that acted is being part of the Junior Dawn. Initially hesitant, I recognized the chance to develop my communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills. As a Junior Dawn, this part of me plays a crucial role in rearing the future of our society. It goes beyond holding positions of authority; it is about harnessing the potential within each student to inspire positive change and cultivate a culture of growth and innovation. Engaging and providing valuable experiences that nurture individuals into confident, empathetic, and responsible. Empowering students to take on leadership roles, paves the way for a brighter future built upon the collective efforts and aspirations of the next generation. This experience not only sharpened my ability to motivate and inspire others but also revealed my capacity to overcome challenges and adapt to dynamic situations. Journalism fosters an appreciation for freedom of speech and the press. We, as students, gain a deeper understanding of the media landscape, recognize bias, identify misinformation, and critically evaluate news sources. Media literacy is a vital skill in today's informationdriven society. We are holding power accountable and giving a voice to the community.

Changes often prompt us to reassess our priorities and reevaluate what truly matters. Through introspection and reflection, we gain insights into our strengths, weaknesses, values, and aspirations. The University of the East builds me to reevaluate my preconceived notions and question the status quo. By exposing us to alternative viewpoints and different ways of thinking, changes broaden our understanding of the world. Appreciate the significance of the university and use it as a springboard to pursue my passions, contribute to society, and continue learning and evolving throughout life. Graduating from the University of the East instills a sense of pride and self-fulfillment of youth.

IN RETROSPECT Sarah Mae Vasquez

I used to be scared of taking risks or trying something new. I was never an adventurous type of person; I was always scared of trying. I never went out of my comfort zone; I chose not to take a road that wasn’t familiar to me. Not until I entered UE. UE gave me a lot of opportunities to improve myself and get out of my comfort zone. I did a lot of things that I never thought I would do. A lot of things about me changed as I entered UE, most of them for the better. And I’ve always been thankful to UE for that.

I don’t want to take risks because I don’t want something about me to change. I’ve always been scared of change. I don’t like the idea of change. But UE made me realize that change is inevitable and that sometimes you have to change in order to improve as a person. You can’t always be where you are; you have to grow. Before, I thought that when you change, it's a bad thing. But now I see change as part of growing. It’s not a bad thing; it’s a sign of growth.

I always thought I was better off where I was before, but now that I see myself, I see that the changes UE made have made me the best version of myself. This person is the person I always wanted to be but thought I would never be because I was too scared to get out of my comfort zone. The opportunities UE gave me shaped me into the best version of myself. I discovered things I didn’t know I loved; I found new skills and abilities that I never thought I could do. And UE was present all those times. UE was there when I was hesitant to take a step forward. I’m thankful for those people who were present all those times; I couldn't imagine where I am today without all of you. It’s a privilege to be here and to be a warrior.

IN RETROSPECT LITTLE THINGS Alexine Ticman Oftentimes, we think of the weight of the big things.

We think that the big days will matter more than the mediocre ones. We think that the big events will be more remembered than the details. But truth be told, that’s not the case. Well, not for me and UE, to say the least.

In a year from now, I’ll think back on the memories I’ve had in this universtiy. A year from now, I know I’ll remember the graduation ball, the big ceremonies, the strand weeks. In fact, I’ll even remember the major performance tasks our class went crazy for. I‘ll be thinking of the moment we realized our hardships paid off during the Mr and Ms. Innovative for STEM strand week and even the days leading up to that. I’ll remember dancing with people I don’t know yet share my home with to Can’t Take My Eyes Off You in the quadrangle. I’ll remember the excitement in the air and the glamour in the aura during graduation ball. I’ll remember tossing the cap.

But God, I hope in 10 years from now, I hope I won’t forget the little things.

In 10 years from now, I hope to remember the sweet greetings from the ate’s operating the elevators. The way the unison of thank yous would sing upon arrival, the way we would giggle when we attempt to scare them with ghost stories. I hope I remember the adventures I have in the regular days.

The long travels from home to school and in between that gives me glimpse of the world. I hope I remember the small performance tasks that bonded us. The small days that laughed with us. The short days that brought joy. The tiny days that all amount to my weight in gold—tripled.

The big things are momentous, indeed. But at the pace life is going? At the quick two years turned to the best four months of my life? I want the little things with me forever. The little things that made UE my home, and the little things that made me a warrior.
