Retirements* David Sowell
Professor of History 1989 to 2017 I don’t think that Juniata is unique. It has its special characteristics, as do most liberal arts colleges, but unique is a singular word that ought not be used casually. We have an excellent commitment to students that manifests itself in an excellent culture of teaching, and of knowing students as people, and helping them in a crucial era of personal, social, and academic growth. I will miss the day-to-day interaction with students and colleagues.
Debra Kirchhof-Glazier
Professor of Biology and former director of the Health Professions Program 1981 to 2017 Juniata’s collegial atmosphere is palpable. I love the fact that it is a small campus, which has given me the opportunity to form positive working relationships with faculty across disciplines. In my experience Juniata has traditionally had “pink tape” rather than red tape. If you wanted to do something for yourself or your students that bent the rules but was reasonable, you could make it happen. I will miss the personal interactions with the students. This has been one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching. Also, several students over the years have become lifelong friends, and I am looking forward to having the time to visit them or have them over for tea in my grape arbor.
Paul Schettler
Charles A. Dana Professor of Chemistry 1967 to 2017 Students enter Juniata, and leave as friends. I have always appreciated the easy relationship between students and teachers at Juniata. I am anticipating that the wide range of the people who I am engaged with will plummet in spite of my efforts to keep that from happening.
