he cohos are returning, and it’s time for the iconic family event of the Juneau summer — the 69th Annual Golden North Salmon Derby!

The Territorial Sportsmen would like to invite you out on the water from Aug. 14-16 for the chance to win more than $200,000 in cash and prizes.

But it’s not just about the money.

By doing so, you will be helping to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Territorial Sportsmen Scholarship Foundation, which has provided almost $1.7 million in scholarships to Juneau students since 1953.

So how does this all work? First you need to buy your derby ticket at one of our local vendors — Harri Plumbing and Heating downtown, Western Auto Marine in Lemon Creek, Juneau Mercantile and Armory in the valley, or Dehart’s in Auke Bay. The tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for kids ages 6-12.

Once you have your ticket, it must be validated by a derby official before you can participate in the derby. Derby validations start at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, and the validation is good for the entire event. Lists of validation stations are included in this publication as well as at the derby website, http://www. goldennorthsalmonderby.com.

As you head out on the water, be sure to go slow and observe the no-wake safety zones in Douglas, Auke Bay and Amalga harbors. With the potential for more than 400 vessels and up to 2,000 people on the water over the weekend, we want make your safety a priority. Please check the maps of the safety zones,

be courteous to all boats that are around you and don’t risk disqualification by going too fast.

Once you are out at your favorite fishing hole, fish to your heart’s content while following all appropriate Alaska Department of Fish and Game Regulations. Remember, each king and coho that you turn in to the derby is sold to fund the scholarship program for the youth of Juneau! Because these fish are sold to a commercial processor, there are a few simple guidelines to follow: 1. All fish must be kept in the round. Do not gut or gill your fish.

2. Ice down your fish as soon as they are caught. Ice is provided throughout the derby at Amalga, Auke Bay, and Douglas harbors and at several validation stations on Friday as well.

3. Keep your fish in first-class, bright condition by keeping it in a cooler that has a 2:1 mix of seawater to ice.

When you have caught a particularly big fish, or if it is simply time to turn in your haul of fish for the day, head for one of the three weigh stations … where you now have a decision to make. If you think your fish might be in the running for one of the Top 69 Prizes that are determined by weight, let the Derby official know that you would like to weigh your fish and your fish will be officially entered in the derby.

If your fish aren’t quite in the running, you still have a chance to win by turning them in as scholarship fish. By doing so you will be entered in a drawing for more than $5,000 in prizes, as well as the chance to win up to $50,000 in the

High Five drawing sponsored by Hecla Greens Creek Mining Company and the Coeur Alaska Kensington Gold Mine. For more details on all prizes, be sure to read the prize sections in this publication carefully.

Once again, Alaska Glacier Seafoods is providing a packer located in the South Shelter Island area that will be accepting only scholarship fish throughout the weekend. The packer is not a weigh-in station, but can be a convenient option to drop off your scholarship fish in order to keep them as fresh as possible and avoid any congestion in the harbors. Announcements will be made over the marine radio on Channel 16 as to the location and availability of the vessel.

Unofficial results for weighted fish will be updated on the derby website each evening throughout the weekend. Once the derby is over, the results will be certified on Tuesday, Aug. 18, and all official results, including the winners of the scholarship fish drawings, will be posted to the website by Wednesday, Aug. 19. All prizes will be given out at awards night at Centennial Hall, starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20.

The Golden North Salmon Derby is an annual tradition that has been the backdrop for building family memories for 69 years. Whether you have fished the derby for decades, or if this will be your first time out on the water, we hope that you will join us in this important fundraiser for the youth of Juneau.

he committee for the 69th Golden North Salmon Derby is dedicating this year’s event to lifelong Juneau resident and long-time Derby volunteer Brita Rice.

We are very pleased to be able to highlight a person who has given so much time to past derbies and, in addition, has been a key player in the Territorial Sportsmen Scholarship Foundation for many years.

Rice began volunteering as a dock worker at Tee Harbor in the 1967 derby, and eventually worked her way up to being chief of the Tee Harbor operation. In those days, the tickets got punched every day and dock workers got to say hello and chat with all the fishers. Rice always had a big smile on her face for everyone, and she was appreciated very much.

Later, she served several times as Dock Committee chairperson for the entire derby.

For many years, as Rice tells it, the docks were staffed entirely by women, and that any men making deliveries or having other business at the docks were watched closely and held to a high standard.

Rice also served on the derby prize committee, which has the arduous task of soliciting, collecting and organizing contributions from businesses and individuals each year to incentivize people to pursue and submit scholarship fish. During her time volunteering for the derby, Rice pushed the idea for awarding youth prizes.

In addition to working during many derby weekends, Rice has spent 20 years as a member of the scholarship foundation’s board, and served as secretary/treasurer for much of that time. The TSSF process for interviewing student applicants, selecting winners and administering scholarships has resulted in almost $1.7 million in scholarships for Juneau and Southeast Alaska youth being awarded since the inception of the derby. Rice’s role in administering and tracking those awards has

Fellow lifetime Juneau resident and “outthe-road girl” Florence Johnson summed it up nicely.

“I can’t say enough great things about Brita — she works hard and truly enjoys what she’s doing, especially for the Territorial Sportsmen,” Johnson said.

The derby committee appreciates the dedication and consistent contributions of Rice to the Golden North Salmon Derby, as well as to our scholarship program over her many years of involvement.

We are all honored to dedicate the 69th edition of the derby to her.

Pink and chum salmon will not be accepted. Derby participants are encouraged to return pink and chum salmon unharmed to the water unless they are retained for personal consumption.

Contestants 13 years and older must purchase a $40 entry ticket. Contestants six to12 years of age must purchase a $10 entry ticket.

These tickets are good for all days of the derby. No refund of entry fees will be made.

Contestants must validate their tickets on the first day of their fishing and may stay out on the derby grounds all three days. You need to validate your ticket only once. If you do not fish, your ticket must be validated prior to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Derby officials are at the boat docks and harbors. Contestants must take their fish to these officials for checking and weighing to become eligible to enter the competition for one of the top 69 fish, or for other prizes.

Any person who has a validated derby entry ticket is eligible to fish in the derby. You must be born before Aug. 14, 2009 to participate in the derby (6 years of age). Children 12 years of age or younger must be accompanied by an adult of at least 18 years of age. A person with a child ticket weighing a fish must be accompanied by an adult holding a validated derby ticket. Derby officials will check derby tickets of people accompanying a child weighing-in a fish. The person who weighs in the fish must be the person who caught the fish. In the case of a protest the angler may be requested to pass of polygraph test.

Entrants may not fish with non-entrants.

Non-entrants, regardless of age, may not fish in the same boat with entrants, but may go along for the enjoyment of the outing.

Only lawful sport fishing tackle may be used.

Derby participation is restricted to fishing from vessels. Fish taken by dock fishing or shore fishing will not be accepted. All fish must be delivered in the round, uncleaned, to an official weigh-in station by vessel only.

Only the following stations will have weighing scales that must be used for official weighing of salmon: Weigh-In Locations*: Amalga Harbor: 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Auke Bay Harbor: 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Douglas Harbor: 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m. *See Signal Bomb paragraph for Sunday closure time.

Eight validating stations will be open. Not all validation stations are weigh-in stations.

3 may proceed directly to the fishing areas after validating their derby entry tickets.

Use of firearms from any boat will disqualify all contestants on that boat from the derby.

Salmon that show evidence of contamination, sun burn, bruising and/or flesh deterioration will not be accepted. Dark fish will not be accepted and the decision of a derby official is final. Help us maintain fish quality.

Fish must be uncleaned in the round.

A closing signal will be sounded near the three shore-based official weigh-in stations (Douglas Harbor, Amalga Harbor, Auke Bay Harbor) at 6 p.m. on Sunday, by which time all boats wishing to enter fish at the weigh-in stations for one of the top 69 prizes must be inside the finish line.

Every vessel propelled by machinery, regardless of horsepower, must have its name or number clearly displayed. Speed of all vessels during the derby, while within the reduced-speed areas (see map) is limited to

five m.p.h. or less to avoid large wakes. Markers to indicate the reduced speed zones near the three shore-based weigh-in stations have been placed at reasonable distances from the station.

Waters open to derby participants are described as follows: North boundary lines: Those waters South of a line from Point Bridget (58.40.699N, 134.59.25W) on the mainland to Point Whidbey (58.34.708N, 135.8.261W) on the Chilkat Peninsula; and, those waters south of a line extending from Cooper Point (58.14.215N,134.6.371W) to the north shore of Greely Point (58.12.864N, 134.5.188W) in Taku Inlet.

South boundary lines: Those waters north of a line extending from Point Lizard Head (58.10.9N, 134.52.7W) to the south shore of Rocky Island (58.10.6N, 135.03.15W) and then to the south end of Entrance Island (58.11.7N, 135.05.08W), and, those waters North of a line extending from Twin Point (57.54.642N, 133.59.644W) on the Glass Peninsula, to Point Styleman (57.58.455N, 133.53.958W) on the mainland.

Note: Swanson Harbor and Port Snettisham are open for overnight anchorage, but are outside the derby grounds.

All other waters are closed to Derby fishing.

Once a contestant has validated, the con-

testant may not take a boat out of the derby area limits. The contestant may return the boat to the harbor or take a boat from the water to trailer home. The contestant may return a boat to a harbor even if the contestant has a weigh-in fish but does not return to the harbor during official weigh-in hours.

Any boat and all contestants thereon found in violation of speeding, boating outside the Derby area, or in any way posing a hazard to other contestants, shall be disqualified from the Derby.

The Territorial Sportsmen, Inc. is not responsible for any prizes donated by merchants who do not give as pledged. The values shown on the prize list are set by the donors.

The Territorial Sportsmen, Inc. will not be responsible if any prizes prove to be less valuable than shown in the donor’s estimate.

Taxes on all prizes are the responsibility of the individual winner. In accordance with IRS rules, winners of prizes valued at $600 or more must provide their taxpayer identification number at awards night. Failure to do so will result in withholding the prize.

Protests of any nature must be made in person at the Officials’ stations. Then the contestant must present his or her case person-

ally to the Board of the Territorial Sportsmen, Inc. at their derby certification meeting at noon on the Tuesday following the derby.

The certification meeting will be at the Mi Casa Restaurant at noon on the Tuesday following the derby. Decisions of the Board are final.

Derby participants must comply with Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game sports fishing regulations. Contestants cited for violating these regulations while in the derby will be disqualified.

For special prizes and scholarship prizes involving age, the contestant must request that the dock worker note the angler’s age and any required qualifying information on the weigh-in slip.

Where are the king salmon? Territorial Sportsmen Inc. sponsored a public event in spring 2015 to find out.

Questions that were examined at the April 2 event at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center included: What is the status of chinook salmon stocks in the region? Why have Taku River chinook salmon declined in abundance in recent years? What research is being done to support the conservation and management of these fisheries?

These are but a few of the questions posed to more than 100 people who attended the evening symposium with speakers from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the National Marine Fisheries Service, who gave presentations and answered questions from the public.

At the statewide scale, wild chinook stocks have been depressed in nearly all major rivers for much of the past decade and in response, the Chinook Salmon Research Initiative at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game was established with support from the Alaska Legislature. In some areas of the state research is just starting. But in Southeast, four indicator stocks in the Unuk, Stikine, Taku and Chilkat rivers have the benefit of almost 25 years of chinook stock assessment projects.

Variable smolt abundance in the freshwater life stage coupled with low marine survival

appear to be prime factors in reduced chinook production. ADF&G has also published the highly informative publication titled “Chinook News” for more information. Find it online at http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index. cfm?adfg=chinooknews.main.

Closest to home is the Taku River chinook stock, which has had low returns for most of the past decade and did not meet escapement goals in 2007 and 2013. Similar to other stocks statewide, ADF&G research indicates that marine survival may also be the primary cause of reduced returns. Most of the sportfishing effort on these fish occurs in late April to midJune, with 400 to 1,000 wild fish caught annually by Juneau area anglers. In times of low abundance, like the present, the Territorial Sportsmen have said they believe the burden of conservation should be shared by all sectors — sport and commercial — until the stock rebounds.

The goal of this event was to provide some of the most recent information available and encourage members of the public to support improving our king salmon fisheries by being informed and participating in public discussions with the ADF&G and the Board of Fish.

We were encouraged by the public turnout at the April event and by indications that ADF&G may host future events of this type, so stay tuned for further installments.

The Territorial Sportsmen Scholarship Foundation, Inc. awarded $36,000 in scholarships in 2015. Three $12,000 undergraduate scholarships were granted to Juneau area graduating seniors: Matt Cunningham (Thunder Mountain High School), Jason Hock (Juneau Douglas High School), and Jessica Landry (Thunder Mountain High School). No applications were received for Vocational/ Technical or Graduate Fellowship scholarships.

The scholarship program began in 1953 with a scholarship awarded to Johnny Harris (a grandson of one of the founders of Juneau— Richard Harris). Since then, 302 scholarships and fellowships have been awarded totaling $ 1,680,350.

Currently, there are 13 students active in

our program.

The TSSF, Inc. board members are Rick Purves, President; Kami Bartness, Vice President; Brita Rice, Secretary-Treasurer; Jerry Burnett, Trustee and Jack Manning, Trustee.

Funding for the scholarship program comes primarily from two sources: The net sales of salmon donated through Territorial Sportsmen’s annual Golden North Salmon Derby and the return on investments in the Foundation’s endowment fund. Participants in the 2014 Salmon Derby caught and donated king and coho salmon worth $20,511.

The foundation also received $10,000 from Territorial Sportsmen, Inc., and a $100 gift in memory of Charlie Robinson. These amounts go directly into the TSSF, Inc. Endowment Fund.

Greenish-blue back with silvery sides. Small black spots on the back, dorsal fin, and usually on Black mouth with white upper lobe gums at base of teeth on of tail lower jaw. only.

SOCKEYE (RED) SALMON:

CHUM (DOG) SALMON: with yellowish-silver sides.

Dark blue-black

back with silvery sides. No distinct spots on back, dorsal fin, or tail.

Spawning king salmon adults lose their silvery bright color and take on a maroon to olive brown color.

Dull gray back

PINK SALMON (HUMPIES):

Very large spots on the back and large black oval blotches on both tail lobes. Very small scales.

Spawning adults develop olive green coloration on the back with maroon sides covered with irregular dull red bars. Males exhibit many large caninelike teeth.

HOW TO IDENTIFY the FIVE SALMON SPECIES found in the KODIAK ISLAND/ALASKA PENINSULA AREA

Spawning adults take on a dull gray coloration on the back and upper sides with a creamy white color below. Males develop a pronounced hump.

Spawning sockeye salmon adults develop dull green colored heads and brick-red to scarlet bodies.
