Chronixx In Antigua: THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME.

By Dee Lundy Charles Last weekend, during what can only be described as a Reggae Love Fest of epic proportions, the Universe showed me once again that timing is everything. After touring the world for almost a year, performing at iconic venues like London’s Brixton Academy and the Stone Pony in San Francisco, twentyfive-year-old Jamar McNaughton was welcomed back to the Caribbean by the tiny island of Antigua - and what a welcome it turned out to be.

As a grey-haired Irish woman who adopted Saint Lucia as home twenty-five years ago, I’m not an obvious demographic in his legions of devotees, but as a writer, former magazine editor and lifetime lover of reggae music, my invitation from Jump268 to cover the Chronixx Live In Antigua show on April 7 was like a gift from Jah himself.

My own pair of twenty-something offspring have been members of ‘the Rasta youth’ since early on and are responsible turning me into a fan by sitting me down to listen to ‘They Don’t Know’ in the winter of 2016. It was love at first lyric, of course. Ironically, they live in Ireland now, so they were hanging on the end of WhatsApp waiting for a glimpse of their idol should I bounce up with him.

Arriving from Saint Lucia on Friday morning, I stepped into the impressive VCBIA arrivals hall with a notebook of questions, butterflies of anticipation and no idea what to expect.

Turned out Antigua had a lot of surprises in store for Chronixx - and me - during an unforgettable weekend of reggae, reasoning and real Rastafari.

Whisked to the press conference by the adorably nervous mum of one of the Jump268 team members, I arrived in time to look around the quiet room of undeniably excited Antiguan media, and organizers, all of us trying PAGE 06sponsors JUMP MAGAZINE not to look too uncool as the top table took

their seats. A shuffle of entourage through the door and there he was, bringing us to our feet to catch a glimpse and applaud his presence.

Bashfully surveying the room, his watchful eyes locking individually with the now silent, breath-holding audience, Chronixx proceeded to deliver his message in a fluent, cogent and compelling Q&A conducted by Trinidadian media personality, Empress Jeanille, and instantly it was clear that we really were in the presence of greatness.

If timing is everything, his message of love has arrived when the world’s young people need it most. And if the inspiration and influence of Bob Marley’s One Love credo is obvious, the 21st century iteration of “Rastafari truth” that Chronixx preaches is not simply a retrospective regurgitation, but a pragmatic rework of Rasta’s fifty-year-old ideology for the troubling times we live in.

He is very much a product of his generation, with an expansive world view and benign philosophy that insists on transposing the traditionally romantic image of Rasta into Babylon v.2018. He talks about the history, the faith and its philosophies, where Rastafari has come from and what the brethren have undergone since the early years of violence and oppression of the infant movement’s peaceful brethren in Jamaica and across the Caribbean.

Like kaleidoscopic moths to his irresistible flame, the children arrived with their mothers and teachers to watch and listen as the most famous twenty-five year old Rastaman on the planet greeted his Elder with deep respect and genuine humility, took a seat opposite and sat down to talk about the future of Rastafari.

But with vision and wisdom that defy his youthful earth-age, Chronixx is more interested in the future of the Rastafari youth of which he has become the de facto leader, by virtue of a prolific body of work built up over only seven years. His music is the living, breathing soul of “everything”, with poetic lyrics delivering the harsh realities of financial and spiritual poverty in the world just as palatably as when they celebrate the beauty of nature and the planet.

Coming to Antigua a few weeks after the island took its first step towards decriminalizing cannabis was another coincidence of timing.

As only the second CARICOM state to relax the laws that outlawed Rastafari’s sacramental herb and made generations of its practitioners into petty criminals, it must have felt like an added bonus to the regional scoop for organizers Jump268 and Plus1 Entertainment.

If the press conference was anything to go by, we were all in for a treat the following evening.

Meanwhile, the Chronixx entourage were en route to their next appointment at the village of the Nyabinghi Theocracy Order of Antigua, where Elder of the Nyabinghi House of Big Creek, King Osagyefo and his vibrantly-clad community were awaiting the arrival with a feast of ital lunch and a palpable sense of expectation. As the serene Nyabinghi queens tended their bubbling pots and the beautifully behaved kids whispered their impatience to finally see the man himself, there was a sense of reverend anticipation that felt more like religious fervor than fandom for a famous music celebrity.

Despite all my attempts to find nonreligious descriptives, I can only return to the observation that pervaded and colored the rest of the weekend. Watching the joyful, awestruck reaction of the Rastafari community to this man was like witnessing a messianic moment.

Bringing Chronixx a calabash of lunch and a thirst-quenching jelly coconut was a privilege, evidenced by the beatific smile on the faces of the ladies who served him. Hearing his thoughts on the plight of Rastafari and the new day that needs to be seized by the brethren was certainly an unexpected privilege for me, and the afternoon was more enlightening than any book or documentary covered in my Rastaresearch.

Talk about being in the right place at the right time . . . We hung on their every word, experiencing a sublime exchange on the role of Rastafari in today’s dystopian reality and the real future potential for Haile Selassie’s people as seen by Antigua’s Nyabinghi king and Jamaica’s crown prince of reggae.

Almost two hours later, after High Priest Selah led the chanting for blessings bestowed on the Nyabinghi village by Chronixx and a ceremonial pipe of the King’s best herb was shared, it was time for the community to say a melancholy goodbye - at least until the big event.

Fast forward to Saturday night at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium and the most wonderful surprise as I made my way to the front of the stage to scope out a good spot in the press pit. There they were in their glorious finery: all my new friends, from the tiny ear-muffed baby and rainbow-clad, wide-eyed students of the Nyabinghi Theocracy Church School to their stately teacher Kai Davis and the sistren and brethren who had stunned Chronixx on his arrival at the airport by drumming and chanting Antigua’s welcome, and broken bread with him on that unforgettable afternoon at Big Creek.

For the next three hours, I watched a top lineup of local reggae acts that blew me away with their talent and energy, all cheered on from right below the stage by a singing, dancing, Lion-of-Judah-flag-waving tribe of the happiest people I’ve ever seen at a concert. The Antiguan crowd were frenetic with excitement as the hour grew later, but they certainly love their homegrown reggae scene and the vibe never faltered throughout sets performed by The Strays, Hempress Divine, Zambai, The Dan Juba and Promise No Promises - all backed by the super-cool Wadadli Rebels, Hughe Andrew, Drastic – backed by his band The P.U.L.S.E, and the surprise appearance of Dilgin & his father Chronicle at the last minute.

Finally, it was time for Chronixx and the Zincfence Redemption, and at last I realized why the entire Nyabinghi community was there, as they took the stage to once again welcome in their own inimitable style, the special visitor from Spanish Town, Jamaica.

Antigua’s youthful entertainment media will assess and review the record 135-minute performance, others will critique the event production, but for this middle-aged IrishLucian writer it was sheer, unforgettable bliss.

For two and a quarter hours, every lyric familiar and new to me - rounded back to the message I had heard during my time in Chronixx’s company, giving a new power to the conscious music and charismatic persona that had motivated my quite uncharacteristic plea to Jump268 for an interview with my kidults’ reggae idol. But when the last song was sung and the scheduled time came, I made a decision that surprised even myself.

Without asking him a question, he had answered them all, telling me everything I wanted to know and more, to the point where an interview would have felt like my own ego tripping on a man who had just given himself to Antigua with every fiber of his being. As the crowd moved off, bursting with irie energy and infinite gratitude, I walked to the carpark and left Jamar McNaughton to be rewarded for his efforts by the Antiguan love that had been the backdrop for a very special weekend.

Timing is everything, and perhaps in my future there will be another chance to interview Chronixx, but for now I am content and eternally grateful that I was able to observe and listen to him up close and personal at this particular time in his trajectory.

Meanwhile, I would like to thank some people from the bottom of my heart.

The rest, as they say, is history.

For this writer at least, it was a unique experience and one that has lived on for days in the form of random smiles that appear with each memory and a head full of Chronixx music as a daily soundtrack.

420 From Seed to Smoke…

Growing Marijuana for Beginners Part 1 By: Zack Tastic It’s been just over a month since Antigua & Barbuda decriminalized the recreational use of marijuana, and the signs are already beginning to show that a there is green on the horizon.

The bill was passed by the lower house in early 2018, however it has taken refuge in Antigua’s current political system, with many of its details remaining unclear. This has not deterred the public from exercising their right to ‘partake in the herb’, as many Antiguans are avid users of cannabis, and even more avid growers.

For the beginner grower however, there is little support and resources to turn to. We’re going to shed some light on the questions many of us have regarding the cultivation of marijuana at home. The process is simple and has been practiced throughout guerilla grow ops across the island for years, yet the quality of local grown herb like Wadadli or even other Caribbean-native strains like Arizona, Vinci or Yardie, fails to live up to the qualities of foreign and medicinal strains.

With simple know-how, guidance and a few resources from online, you could be growing your own in weed in a matter of months, that is just as potent as what you’re used to from places like the US and Canada.

Indoor or Outdoor - Where to Start?

The first question you want to ask is whether your grow is going to be set-up indoors or outdoors. The decision should be based on accessibility, resources, budget and space. For those of you willing to spend a little money for a more controlled and premium crop, try buying an indoor grow tent or hydroponics set up online. For the purpose of this article, we’ll focus on the stages of growing weed outdoors in the12beautiful Caribbean sun.

Choosing Your Seeds & Soil

Concerned about potency? It’s simple – good genetics means more potent herb. So start buy investing in seeds from an online seed bank or carefully choose seeds from strains you already know are high in THC potency. You can also consider taking a clone from an already existing, healthy plant.

In terms of soil and pot size, try to get your hands on an organic grow mix from your local gardening store or mix your own soil.

Soil should be dark and rich in nutrients, with enough air to let your roots form easily, but still retains water under hot conditions. Try even composting your own soil mix with left over fruits and vegetables or animal manures. Once you’ve chosen a seed and soil mix, it’s time to germinate.

Germinating Seeds

You can germinate seeds in two ways – directly in soil, or in a paper towel. If you decide on the later, you’ll be able to monitor your seedling growth prior to planting. Moisten the paper towel and place your seeds inside. Keep them covered and away from light. Do not let the paper towel dry completely. Once there is close to 1” of root growth, your seedlings are ready to pot. Consider planting directly in your final grow pot to avoid transplanting. A 5-gallon pot is a good size to star with.

Early Growth

Regularly monitor your early seedlings. Water them each day just until the water drains out the pot. You will first see a small seedling emerge with two small leaves after 2-3 days.

This first pair of leaves are the seed cover and are rounded in shape. Your next sets of leaves will vary from 3-finger to 5-finger marijuana leaves with jagged edges. When these appear you have reached your vegetative stage.

Vegetative & Flowering Stages

Marijuana plants grow in two stages – vegetative and flowering. The vegetative stage is crucial to the plants development. This is where new leaf growth is rapid and you will have the opportunity to shape your plant with Click here to topping and lolipopping techniques. listen

Be sure to let your plant get as much sunlight exposure at this stage of its growth. Ideal outdoor light conditions for a plant in vegetative stage is 16 hrs of light/8 hrs of no light, so be sure to plant before the summer when the days are longest.

During this period, be sure to identify your plants sex by looking for small white pistols at new areas of growth in the plant. If you see green sacs, your plant is male and will not flower. It is crucial you keep male and female plants separated. While your plant focuses its energy on new growth, consider feeding it organic nutrients high in nitrogen. Chicken litter, bat guano and other manures contain suitable concentrations of nitrogen for a vegetating plant.

As the natural light cycle shortens, your plants will begin to flower under a 12/12 light cycle.

Flowering is indicated by the female plant growing white pistols from new joints and growth areas, followed by smaller, crystal covered buds forming around them. To boost your plants bud and flower production, switch to feeding it nutrients high in potassium and phosphorus. There are some readily available nutrients online, or you can use organic substitutes like kelp meal, fish meal or blood meal. You can also begin pruning the lower leaves off your plant to help it focus its energy on budding.

As the buds begin to cover with crystals, lower leaves may die. This is normal. Let your plants flower for almost 6 weeks or longer. Your flowers are ready to pick, when the crystals become milky or amber in color. This means it’s time to cut down those little babies of yours. Sad, we know. But what waits around the corner is worth it.

“WATERED DOWN”

BY ALI.T (SERWA ALISA THOMAS) know for a fact that majority of people find it hard within each day to consume the right amount of water daily. For me it’s a definite struggle. It has nothing to do with whether I like the clear life substance or not; most of the time it has to do simple with ‘time’. I have spent so much of the past few months of this year and late last year travelling and working which always had me on the go and being super active but also had put a strain on my effort in the management of being aware that I had not consumed enough water each day.

The body is such a marvelous host to our very reason of operation, but we neglect it without any real reason. How can we know something is vital for the proper running of something but yet still fail to add it to the equation? Just like a car that needs gas to run but we choose to damage its proactive internal operation by running the fuel to almost nothing which in turn puts a strain on the car. It’s basically the same principle when denying our body the fuel it needs to keep our body detoxed, proactive; and like the car; running smoothly.

An average human body is made up of 60% water. In the Journal entry of Biological Chemistry 158, According to H.H. Mitchell, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water, the lungs are about 83% water, the skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are water based which really shows us just how important the value of water is. it is the equivalent to the value of money or even more to ensure the proper operation of organs and internal processes needed to fight and defend against diseases and other ailments that may infect the internal structure of our insides.

I have thought to myself many times that maybe the real cure to lot of our cancers, sicknesses and diseases lies deep routed in the amounts of water and high-water content foods (with minimal sugar of course) that we consume.

But how would we really know if that is the case when the most vital detox element is being mixed with medications containing so many chemicals and things we cannot pronounce, additives and preservatives. It is pure nonsense to me. Why the research of cancer and vaccines cannot be done with the elimination of sugars, salts and starches which will turn into sugars? What’s needed is an increase in the value of organic foods and more of nature’s fuel to us; ‘WATER’.

We all need to think about ourselves more and if that means downloading a water tracker to assist us in drinking more water in the day or infusing our water with fruits and herbs, then that should be a start. Also remember that too much of one thing isn’t good and also in using citrus such as lemon should be periodic because too much of the juice in the gut can also cause the growth of Candida Yeast.

Always remember that the repair of the body starts with a decision and self-discipline.

Why We Do Cardio IS CARDIO IMPORTANT?

“CARDIO MAKES YOUR HEART STRONGER.” When it comes to toning, muscle isn’t necessarily the issue but rather fat is the concern. Excess fat will make you appear soft no matter how much muscle you have underneath. In order to “tone” you must reduce the layer of fat, and cardio is a very effective way to help lower your body-fat percentage.

You’re winning!!! Do Your Cardio!!! So no matter what your fitness goals are, cardio makes your heart stronger. The American Heart Association recommends that EVERYONE do “moderate intensity” cardio for 150 minutes per week for heart health.

This breaks down to about 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week. Moderate intensity exercise means that you are feeling a little out of breath while you talk and exercise.Pick some form of cardio that you like to do. Body By O’Jay offers 6 cardio and strength training classes a week abs, plyometric, circuit training, booty building and step aerobics. If you’re not into group sessions, there is hiking, swimming, running, biking and so much more! Grab a friend, make a great playlist and go for it!

As an amateur Figure Competitor, it is important that I include cardio into my workout regimen. Cardio helps me to lose excess fat, and it also helps stimulate my metabolism to work better even when I’m not working out. Scorching the excess fat is going to create a lean, hard, defined physique.

I am very sure my clients would love to shoot me every time I remind them to do cardio… but that’s not going to stop me from reminding them that cardio is important even if they are just trying to tone up through weight training!

Weight training with no cardio can be bad for your heart. When you increase the pressure in your blood vessels, it makes it hard for your heart to push blood out to your muscles. Doing cardio is important to help balance that out! Cardio exercise is essential for helping to prevent cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses. When your heart rate is elevated for an extended period of time, your body switches from using carbs to using fats for energy.

The crystal blue water sparkling right beside you as you drive past the beach, with the picturesque view of the coast ahead of you as you drive around the scalloped coast. Just beyond the hill, around the bend, on your left there is a gem of Antiguan local food called Cavelle’s Cook Shop. The cars line up on the road to sample her fare. The menu there features over twenty delicious meals including her whole fried fish, Johnny cakes, barbecued chicken and stewed pork with Miss Cavelle’s potato salad. This can be washed down with a selection of homemade local juices, which I have found refreshing, healthy and leaving me wanting more. This spot makes me want to jump and clap! The food is sweet; a real roadside gourmet treat that will leave you licking your fingers and coming back again and again.

CELEBRITIES WITH CARIBBEAN HERITAGE

The Caribbean is a beautiful, tropical grouping of over 700 islands, islets, cays, and reefs, and is broken up into 30 territories. The clear, blue waters surrounding these islands are full of tropical fish and sea life.

Several famous actors, athletes and musicians are of Caribbean descent. Let’s take a peak at 2 of these celebrities.

Melanie Fiona Hallim (born July 4, 1983), known professionally as Melanie Fiona, is a Canadian R&B recording artist with a Guyanese background. She was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. She started her career in 2002 as part of a Canadian musical girl band trio X-Quisite that was nominated for “R&B/Soul Recording of the Year” for the band’s album X-Quisite. She went on to be part of The Renaissance (with rapper Drake), and under the name Syren Hall, recorded some reggae songs.

Fiona is the daughter and second child of Guyanese immigrant parents, who immigrated to Canada in the late 1970s. Her parents are of African, Indian, and Portuguese descent.

Sir Sidney Poitier, born February 20,

1927 is a Bahamian-American actor, film director, author, and diplomat. In 1964, Poitier became the first Bahamian and first black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role in Lilies of the Field.

In 1999, the American Film Institute named Poitier among the Greatest Male Stars of classic Hollywood cinema, ranking 22nd on the list of 25.

Sidney Poitier’s parents were Evelyn and Reginald James Poitier, Bahamian farmers who owned a farm on Cat Island and traveled to Miami to sell tomatoes and other produce. Poitier’s uncle has claimed that the Poitier ancestors on his father’s side had migrated from Haiti and were probably among the runaway slaves who established maroon communities throughout the Bahamas, including Cat Island.

Poitier was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974. From 1997 to 2007, he served as the Bahamian Ambassador to Japan. On August 12, 2009, Poitier was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama. In 2016, he was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship for outstanding lifetime achievement in film.

FAR CRY 5

Far Cry 5 drops you into the fictional Hope County, Montana, United States, which is a first for the series. You encounter a cult ridden Hope County which you as the deputy sheriff must take it upon yourself to liberate the people from the cult. You are put up against four villains total, the fourth one being the final boss. Each boss has different ideas and run their area in a specific way. There are some new concepts that are very interesting; first one being that there is no mini map. I wondered how that would work but it does and it does so quite smoothly. The whole idea of leaving out the map was to encourage more exploration and it definitely does.

Each boss owns a section of the map and every section differs from animals, to enemies to activities. The environment is literally filled with life and there is always an event to do. The NPC’s you run into will literally give you side missions telling you about an outpost or places where you can go and find weapon caches.

The array of weapons are great to with the new addition of melee weapons such as shovels and baseball bats. The other weapons are the usual sniper rifles, assault rifles, shot guns, light machine guns and my favorite the bow and arrow. I absolutely love this game and I would say it’s a 100% buy! Coinciding with the release of the game, Ubisoft released a live action short film called Inside Eden’s Gate. The film serves as a prologue to the events of the game and follows three filmmakers as they travel across Hope County. They meet Mark and his sister, Faith who is in the game being taken in by the Eden’s Gate cult. It stars Greg Bryk and Kyle Gallner. Ubisoft made the film available on Amazon Prime. On April 4, the film was released on YouTube.

The game isn’t without controversy, of course.

Its announcement in May, 2017 came at a time of heightened political and ideological conflict around the world due to recent political events such as the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States and the onset of the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union. Many journalists felt that Far Cry 5’s setting and narrative concept, involving themes of religious fanaticism and the emergence of far-right political movements within the borders of the United States—as opposed to the more exotic locales depicted in the previous Far Cry titles in the series —would likely make the game highly controversial in the current climate. w

I find so much excitement and diversity in Fashion. Through my experiments with different trends, Fashion has allowed me to discover so many ways to unleash my creativity. Even though Fashion often revisits the past, it always comes with a fresh twist, which is one of the reasons why I often can be seen mixing past and present styles and trends in my looks.

My looks, while particular, flow from a feeling or a vision. I know it sounds crazy but that’s exactly how it is! My sense of style is quite sporadic.

It cannot be contained into just one category.

I often dress based on my mood. I can be a tomboy in sweat pants and a t-shirt today, and full glam sequins and heels tomorrow.

I unofficially started blogging a few years ago via Facebook and Instagram, which has allowed me to develop my ‘McFierce Style’ and become a source for Fashion info and inspo. It therefore made sense for me to take the necessary steps needed to transition into really owning my love and passion for Fashion and Style and start my blog. I am extremely happy and excited to share all my style inspirations as well as tips and tricks that will help any woman, especially my fellow island girls, unleash their fierceness.

SPRING 2018 TRENDS

BY DESEAN THOMAS AKA DATMODA Being on the brink of summer, I’ve decided to provide two looks that have been making head waves in the men’s fashion world this year. They say fashion is a cycle and these styles are a true testament to that famous saying. Vertical/ horizontal stripes are back!

In my first look, I’m catering to a date night setting with your significant other or casual outing with an upscale taste. I’m wearing a vertical striped shirt layered in black with maroon strips flowing parallel of each other. I completed my look with jet black jeans and a suede tan boots that is fitting for any occasion.

For my second look, I decided to switch it up.

One of the most important traits you should possess in your dressing is versatility. With that being said, here I’m focusing more on a streetwear attire. Perfect for casual looks when attending all-inclusive fetes, or a simple day in the city of St. Johns. JAMAICAN DANCEHALL ARTISTE SUES POP STAR MILEY CYRUS Jamaican dancehall artiste Michael ‘Flourgon’ May has documented a US$300 million claim against American pop artist Miley Cyrus, asserting that her 2013 hit ‘We Can’t Stop’ lifted from his 1988 track, ‘We Run Things’.

The back-to-back Large Band Of The Year winners are known for finding new and innovative ways to capture the excitement with the unveiling of their costumes, and will me doing just that this Sunday with their first ever day fete.

Unveil in its Season 11 debut will be a day fete never seen before.
