Dear Friends, Happy New Year from the Joyce and Henry Schwob School of Music! I think “Fanfare” ought to begin its new incarnation with a fanfare, so you’ll hear a great one if you scan the QR code at the bottom of this message.

If you scan the code, you will enjoy the Schwob Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Jamie Nix, performing a world premiere, “Fanfare for Full Fathom Five,” by the composer John Mackey. The work was commissioned by the Schwob School about six years ago.

Like a number of great works we’ve been fortunate enough to bring to life in the past several years, it owes its existence to the ability of our conducting faculty to commission new works that bring distinction to the school and expand the repertoire for ensembles around the world.

This publication takes a look at a number of recent events, and introduces you to some amazing people you’ll enjoy getting to know. It highlights our friends John and Pat Hart, takes a deeper look at a groundbreaking – and continuing – partnership with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and updates you on activities across the school. You’ll get an up-close look at the achievements of our students and faculty – well, only the tip of the iceberg actually – that I hope will whet your appetite to know more. If you are a music alumnus of Columbus State University, please consider this your invitation to provide more details about what you have been up to lately. We’d love to share those stories in future issues of “Fanfare.”

For their work in launching “Fanfare” into its present form, I want to thank Rex Whiddon, Marion Scott and Julie Frye. They have developed the new look and brought this content to life in a way that’s enjoyable to read and a pleasure to share.

ASO RESID A “WIN-WIN”

a series of “firsts” throughout the years, but perhaps none is more exciting than the new residency partnership with the renowned Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO).

In early 2023, the ASO announced a three-day residency with the Schwob School during which symphony musicians and Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann held masterclasses with Schwob students.

Stutzmann is only the fifth music director in the ASO’s 78-season history and the only woman ever to hold the position.

The centerpiece concert of the residency was Saturday evening, February 4, in the Bill Heard Theatre at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Stutzmann conducted and the ASO performed Prokofiev’s “Sinfonia Concertante for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 125” with cellist Edgar Moreau and Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, Op. 47.”

Maestro Stutzmann conducts masterclass with the Schwob Singers

students included conducting observation and coaching from Stutzmann and then-ASO Associate Conductor Jerry Hou. In addition, Stutzmann, a world-renowned contralto, worked with the Schwob Singers and members of the CSU Choral Union in rehearsal. The following day’s activities included more masterclasses, coaching sessions and chamber music rehearsals with members of the ASO, culminating that evening in a concert featuring ASO musicians with Schwob School faculty and students performing in Legacy Hall.

On Monday, February 6, members of the ASO administrative staff hosted a panel discussion on careers in music and arts management. That afternoon, ASO musicians held audition excerpt masterclasses.

“I am excited about this partnership and all we can do to reach more young musicians on the road to a professional

career in music,” stated ASO Executive Director Jennifer Barlament in the news release announcing the residency.

“Education is one of the pillars of our mission, and I can’t think of a better way to fulfill that mission than to take our long-standing relationship with the Schwob School to this next level.”

Dr. Wanda Ebright, dean of CSU’s College of the Arts, credited the school’s partnership with the ASO as a “unique facet” of preparing Schwob School students for their careers. “Schwob School students and alumni are known the world over for their exceptional talent, their finely tuned skills, and quality of their artistry,” she said. “Being able to partner with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in this monumental way provides our students an incredible opportunity to develop and mature as artists and musicians.”

The ASO and the Schwob School share a history, beginning with ASO

Board of Advisors member, Joyce Schwob, and her husband, Henry Schwob, who have transformed the school into a destination for exceptionally talented musicians from around the world, according to the news release.

Dr. John M. Fuchko III served as CSU interim president at the time the partnership was announced. “It is in part their vision for music education and their investment in our academic programs that continue to elevate both the excellence of our programs, as well as the high regard for the efforts of our Schwob School of Music faculty and the talents of our students and alumni,” he said at the time.

One of those students, Venezuela native and violinist Samuel Vargas, was the 2021 winner of the Sphinx Competition grand prize. In 2021 conducting student Enluis Montes Olivar was named to a prestigious Dudamel Fellowship. One of the winners of the ASO’s Inaugural

Orchestra Fellowship Program, Jordan Milek Johnson, is a 2022 Schwob School alumnus, and the ASO’s own violinist Anastasia Agapova attended the school as well, according to the news release.

Dr. Scott Harris, the Schwob School’s Barbara C. and Clifford J. Swift III Distinguished Chair and Director, noted that Columbus State-ASO connections date back more than 40 years. When then-Columbus College celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1983, an ASO performance kicked off a series of anniversary events.

“We are deeply honored to host the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on campus.

This residency forms the foundation of a partnership that both organizations will build upon to benefit our students and our wonderfully supportive community,” Harris noted in the news release.

The ASO/Schwob Partnership is funded through the generous support of Joyce and Henry Schwob. Stutzmann’s masterclasses were made possible by a gen-

“We tried to come up with numerous ways they could participate with us in this residency,” Hostetter added, citing examples such as orchestral and solo repertoire.

“We thought that a side-by-side chamber concert putting them together next to our faculty and students would be good, so we found a really wonderful way to do that. And then finally we thought because Jennifer Barlament has become such a force in the executive leadership world of orchestra, wouldn’t it be great to have her share her perspective on the arts world in a larger setting and then in small breakouts that give students an opportunity to hear about different business elements of what makes a career go.”

Hostetter added that they videotaped the entire residency for students unable to attend all the sessions in person. While there is still editing to be done, he hopes

While many people worked long hours to bring the residency program to the Schwob School, one of the principals was Paul Hostetter, music professor and the Ethel Foley Distinguished Chair in Orchestral Activities for the Schwob School.

He recalled working with Harris on planning for the 2023 residency and current discussions regarding future programs.

“We were trying to find a holistic manner in which our students could be served through the gifts the ASO brings to bear because not only are they great players but they’re great teachers,” he said. “Most of them have teaching positions, whether in private studios or affiliations with colleges.” He also noted Stutzmann’s reputation and the importance of engaging her in the masterclasses and other residency activities. “Hiring Nathalie Stutzmann [as music director] was a big coup for them.

There have been some management changes at the ASO since the 2023 residency and both sides are actively working on the logistics for the next collaboration.

“They now have a full-time operations director in place,” Hostetter said. “We’ve been working over the past months on what our next steps are going to be so that’s still somewhat in process at the moment. We don’t have it all completely firmed up but Scott Harris and I are working diligently to get the details in place so we can move forward.”

While he may not yet know the details for the next collaboration, he does know the 2023 residency and related concerts had a tremendous impact on the Schwob School and the community. These experiences benefit Schwob students educationally and in terms of networking opportunities with the premier musicians and leadership team of the ASO.

Beyond that, there’s the benefit to the ASO, especially in supporting its stated educational mission. So he sees an ongoing partnership as a “win-win” for all.

“It’s always great to hear the ASO play live and to have them in our facility and performing for our community,” he said. “I think it’s a real gift.” Q

IN FALL 2022, the Schwob School of Music at Columbus

State University (CSU) and Spring Harbor at Green Island, a continuing care retirement community in Columbus, announced a partnership creating a new musician-in-residence program. Enthusiastic comments from the Spring Harbor community and the first musicians in residence indicate the program has been a success.

This “residential partnership” was designed to bring music faculty or graduate students to Spring Harbor for an academic year. In exchange for complimentary living accommodations, the musicians present performances and educational and cultural programming for the residents. National research has shown that older people reap health benefits from regular social interaction and meaningful relationships with young people, and the residency program provides multiple opportunities to transcend the generational divide. Similar intergenerational programs have been implemented at other music schools and conservatories, notably the Cleveland Institute of Music.

“Spring Harbor is recognized as one of the premier continuing care retirement communities in the country, and they were very receptive to adding a musician-in-residence program to their impressive list of amenities,” said L. Rexford (Rex) Whiddon, senior

Shane McDougall, Spring Harbor’s executive director, called the musician-in-residence program “a groundbreaking, mutually beneficial partnership” between his organization and the Schwob School. “This partnership was created in an effort to celebrate both

generations and to create connections between the senior living population and students or professors,” he said. “The connections created last year between our musicians in residence and the Spring Harbor residents will be intact for years to come. Spring Harbor could not be more pleased with the amazing people and wonderful musical programs this partnership has brought to our residents.”

While Boris Abramov and his wife, Elzbieta (Ela) Tokarska, the first musicians in residence, were at Spring Harbor for only a year, they made a lasting impression on the residents and established the foundation for successful future programs. Both are accomplished violinists who earned degrees from the Schwob School under the renowned violinist and pedagogue Sergiu Schwartz, the William B. and Sue Marie Turner Distinguished Chair in violin.

Spring Harbor resident Barbara Waller is a retired nurse but has a musical background, having taken flute lessons from a young age through her college years. She said residents were excited when they first learned about the residency program. “We were thrilled when we found out we had musicians coming,” she said.

“They bring such joy and a different perspective on life. We need their youth and enthusiasm.”

She enjoyed getting to know Boris and Ela at group dinners and learning about their backgrounds, their home countries, how they met and their dreams for the future. Mrs. Waller also recalled the educational focus Boris and Ela brought to their programs and how Ela went out of her way to share information and videos about the composers whose work was featured in their performances.

“We loved getting to know Boris and Ela and thought the program was an excellent opportunity for the residents at Spring Harbor,” said Alice Barlow, who lives in the community with her husband Fred. She’s been involved with music since childhood, having played clarinet, piano and organ. “It’s just been wonderful,” she said of the residency. “All the residents we’ve talked to have just loved it.”

While he is not a musician, Fred Barlow said he loves music.

“To have the Schwob folks here on our campus is an important addition,” he said. “It was nice to be able to walk down the hall and hear professional musicians practicing in their apartment. It was terrific; it was like a breath of fresh air.”

Like Mrs. Waller, Mrs. Barlow recalled the enjoyable dinners with the personable and engaging young couple. She also noted the educational component they brought to the program. “To be around Ela and Boris was just so wonderful for the residents,” she said. “At the same time, it was wonderful for the musicians to be

Boris and Ela have equally fond memories of their experience.

“We were honored to be offered this incredible opportunity and it did not take us long to happily accept,” they said. “From our perspective, the benefits were truly one of a kind – getting a chance to live among such incredible individuals, supporting staff and administrators, and given the confidence to start a program from the ground up – something that musicians and artists must learn in today’s world,” they added.

“We were hoping to expose the residents not only to top-level

talent and performances, but to include them in our world as much as possible – by providing lectures, documentaries, personal interactions, cultivating relationships that we maintain to this very day while always keeping our eyes and ears open to what might interest the residents. This way we tailored the program in a balanced manner which allowed different music-related experiences which could interest a wider audience,” the couple said.

“This program provides a direct link between the school and the community way beyond the concert stage,” they added. “It is incredibly important to cultivate personal relationships between the institutions, which will only strengthen the partnership for years to come.”

Their “favorite moments” of the experience were spending time with the residents. “It was during our weekly dinners, interactions in the hallways or other community events we were part of,” they said. “We are still actively in touch with the residents and will continue to do so, which only proves that this program is greater than just music – it is truly an opportunity of a lifetime, which will change the future artists in residence only for the better.”

Boris and Ela expressed appreciation to the Spring Harbor team for making them feel at home. “And last, but not least – the residents, who we love and thank from the bottom of our hearts!”

Musicians in residence for the 2023-2024 academic year are Jennifer Saavedra Tovar, who completed an artist diploma program at Schwob School in 2022 and is pursuing a master’s degree in clarinet performance, and her husband, Victor Guzman, a flutist in the music education program at CSU. “This is a wonderful place,” they said about Spring Harbor.

“It’s a supportive community and residents and staff are really nice and close.”

Jennifer and Victor are excited about planning a variety of activities for the residents and making beautiful music for them. Pat grew up in a farm family in the Midwest, earned advanced degrees in economics, and taught at colleges and universities in cities where they relocated for John’s work.

“But he kept moving around on me, so I started doing consulting work,” she said, smiling at John across the table in their sunny kitchen. She traveled in the U.S. and internationally for consulting engagements.

They have a beautiful “blended” family they speak of often with love and pride.

The couple retired while John was working in the San Francisco area and returned to their permanent home in Washington, D.C. After traveling for a while, they decided to spend some time in Columbus, where John’s sole surviving aunt lived. The aunt was ill, and they stayed to care for her until she passed away. Their daughter joined them in Columbus while she was experiencing a serious health crisis of her own and the Harts saw her through that.

By then, they were considering making Columbus their permanent retirement home.

When recounting their decision to settle in Columbus, Pat recalled a conversation with John’s aunt about wanting to help her

“We just feel the money is well used – not only for the school but for the community, because it enriches the artistic experience in the whole community.”

- Pat Hart with expenses while they were caring for her and asking about her property taxes.

“She said ‘8’ and we thought $8,000,” Pat said. That didn’t seem outrageous to a couple who recently resided in San Francisco, but it turned out she meant $8 a year on property that had been in John’s family since 1910!

But the appeal was more than the surprisingly low taxes. It also was the Schwob School, its talented faculty and students, and the impact it has on CSU and the entire community.

“We started going to concerts and tak-

ing our daughter,” Pat recalled. They also knew longtime Schwob School supporter and advisory board member Betty Auten.

Pat recalled attending their first concert at Schwob; going downtown early so they could find a parking place and having an early dinner before the concert. “After we left, we said this cost us less than our parking alone would have cost us in San Francisco,” she said.

They settled in Columbus around 2003.

“But we didn’t become really active [with Schwob] until about six or seven years after we got here because we were taking care of

family members,” Pat said. Today Pat and John both serve on the Schwob School advisory board.

In addition to the quality of faculty and students, the Harts are impressed with the sense of “family” that permeates the school. “What I like is there seems to be a feel of family and they take care of these students. And you get to know some of the students over time,” Pat said.

Pat and John also enjoy watching the students grow in confidence from their freshman through their senior years. John added how much he enjoys watching the faculty perform, especially Professor Sergiu Schwartz, who holds the William B. and Sue Marie Turner Distinguished Faculty Chair in Violin. “The way he uses his violin and his facial expressions – and his students are just fantastic,” he said.

One student they enjoyed watching “grow up” at Schwob is Boris Abramov, one of Schwartz’s former star violin students.

John is especially impressed with how the school attracts students from all over the world.

The Harts rarely miss a student concert.

“John likes to sit in the balcony,’’ Pat said, joking that it’s become his “permanent seat” in Legacy Hall. “We may have to buy one of those chairs,” she added, laughing.

“Those are the best seats,” John said.

“You can look down and you can see all of the students playing their instruments and you get to watch the conductor with the amazing performance he puts on that you can’t see from behind him in the audience.”

Pat said that sometimes they meet parents of students at the concerts, and they have “wonderful things” to say about the Schwob School. “We have a really good clarinet department, and we ran into a couple of parents whose son was in his first year studying the clarinet,” she recalled.

“They were just so pleased with how he was being trained. Their enthusiasm was

really exciting.”

In addition to supporting the Schwob School financially, they support it with their time and they are unofficial cheerleaders for the faculty, students and the school itself. “John particularly goes to almost every concert,” Pat said. “I love the

music; I really do,” John added. They also invite friends to join them, believing once you’ve attended your first Schwob student concert you will want to go again – and again. “And it’s really lovely as a place to introduce young children to concerts,” Pat added.

John would like to see more advertising and promotion about the student concerts. “The concerts are free and there’s free parking across the street. I think a lot more people would come if they knew.”

The Harts recognize the importance of philanthropy for Schwob and CSU. “I think it’s quite important,” Pat said.

She noted the increasing need for private support of programs and services at

state universities and the importance of donor-funded endowed chairs in attracting and retaining top faculty talent. John commented on the importance of philanthropy in providing services for the international students who are here without their families.

They also are consistent and generous donors. “We just feel the money is well used – not only for the school but for the community, because it enriches the artistic experience in the whole community,” Pat said. “We were lucky enough to have generated extra money and you can tell we prefer to live simply. We would rather spend our money [at Schwob] than on a bigger house or a bigger car. You know you just don’t need those things and you feel a lot warmer in your heart when you do this,” she added.

“We intend to continue to donate like we’ve done in the past,” John said. “I’ve been impressed with the number of graduates and alumni of CSU and those people are now reaching an age when they’re interested in supporting the school. That’s been interesting to watch,” Pat added.

singing,” the mezzo-soprano said. “To have the opportunity to perform for NCCO with Schwob Singers is something I never would’ve seen myself doing this early in my musical career.”

In December, the Schwob Chamber Winds Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Jamie Nix, traveled to Chicago, where it was the featured ensemble at the International Band and Orchestra Festival’s Midwest Clinic. The 18-student ensemble – consisting of an octet and a dectet – includes the Schwob School’s top music majors and wind instrument specialists.

“The Midwest Clinic in Chicago is the largest of its kind, attracting 20,000 attendees from all over the world,” said Nix, who is the school’s Hal J. Gibson Distinguished Chair in Conducting. “Being selected specifically to participate in the Reynolds Conducting Institute part of the clinic is particularly noteworthy because it validates the artistic goals we have been pursuing in [the] Schwob [School of Music] over the years, and it highlights our hard-working students’ commitment to music-making at the highest level,” he added.

With passports in hand, the Schwob Trombone Ensemble will head to Korea in January 2024 as the invited participant for the Korean Trombone Symposium. The 15-member ensemble, under the direction

of Dr. Brad Palmer, will perform a featured concert and take part in the symposium as participants.

“This performance will be the culmination of a year-long cultural and musical exchange,” said Palmer, a professor of trombone, adding that the ensemble’s previous international performances in Hong Kong and Germany and its seven million-plus YouTube views have increased its popularity.

In June 2023, the Korean Trombone Choir was the featured guest ensemble at the Southeast Trombone Symposium hosted by the Schwob School of Music, where they also recorded a full-length CD in Legacy Hall and interacted with Schwob trombonists.

“The Schwob Trombone Studio has been an integral part of my time at Columbus State. Performing with the CSU Trombone Ensemble always challenges me both mentally and physically and has continually pushed me to become a better musician,” said senior music performance major Austin Murray, a Macon, Georgia, native.

“The repertoire we prepare for concerts takes lots of focus in rehearsals and in the performance, and fine-tuning every detail trains my ears to become more and more perceptive each day,” he continued. “As a senior, having the opportunity to perform a big concert like this with my friends and colleagues and in a completely new place will truly be a lifelong memory.”

To aid in underwriting the costs associated with its Korean Trombone Symposium performance, the ensemble has established an online giving campaign through the CSU Foundation. Gifts to this fund

are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

Rounding out upcoming scheduled performances is the Schwob Philharmonic Orchestra, which will be the featured performance at the Georgia Music Educators Conference this January in Athens.

Under the direction of Paul Hostetter and acknowledged as one of the finest ensembles in the Southeast, the Philharmonic currently consists of 104 undergraduate and graduate student instrumentalists drawn from 17 states around the U.S. and 20 other countries.

“A benefit of this type of performance, and related performances we will offer on tour, is that our students will have a chance to play the music in multiple concerts rather than just one time. This deepens our students’ understanding of the pieces, helps them play with a more focused chamber music aesthetic, and perhaps most importantly, gives them a chance to know their peers more fully, as

tours put people together in close proximity,” said Hostetter, the Ethel Foley Distinguished Chair in Orchestral Activities.

“This shared experience is something they will remember for the rest of their lives.”

Megan Castaneda, who completed her master of music in clarinet performance in Spring 2023 and is now pursuing a graduate-level artist diploma in the school, agreed that performing in venues outside Columbus State’s Legacy Hall helps her grow in confidence as a musician.

“Having the opportunity to perform in front of a different crowd and venue than what I am used to encourages my growth as a performer,” the Fayetteville, Georgia, native said. “Adapting is a substantial part of being a musician, and these opportunities help me to reach outside of my comfort zone with a much larger crowd of musicians, performers and educators alike.”

the state, nation and world, they carry the Columbus State University name with them – making them effective ambassadors for the university.

“To have so many ensembles invited as participants in major showcase events in a single year is a testament to the level of artistry at the Schwob School and the increasing awareness of the stature of its programs,” Harris emphasized.

For those whose core interests are in a music-focused career, however, touring performances such as these are essential to recruitment and retention – of students and faculty alike.

“Both students and faculty want the opportunity to travel and perform, and when they do, they invariably have the chance to engage with prospective students who are considering

where they want to study,” Harris said.

“We have no more effective recruitment method than getting our performers, scholars and teachers in front of diverse audiences.”

Hostetter noted that these groups provide greater support to the university’s student recruitment efforts.

“Because members of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra will be attending the Georgia Music Educators Conference as well as directors of virtually all high school music programs, we have a tremendous recruiting opportunity for our institution. When our students perform at a world-class level, they encourage interest in Columbus State University’s many excellent programs.”

Harris also pointed out that without philanthropic support from the school’s

alumni, patrons and donors, that travel – and the caliber of the school’s student and faculty talents – would be non-existent.

“Schwob School donors make these experiences possible. We simply wouldn’t be able to share our student-musicians’ talents with the wider professional world without the generous support we receive from the many friends who invest in our students, our faculty and our programs,” he said.

All the school’s ensembles are audition-only opportunities for current and prospective students. Auditions are part of the admissions process for students applying to study in the Schwob School of Music. Once admitted, currently enrolled students audition for placement in major ensembles, as well as other ensembles and studios that include contemporary music, jazz, opera, musical theatre and single or

specific instruments.

“Both large and small ensemble experiences are core studies for any music major,” Harris said, “and most students participate in more than one ensemble every semester they are here.”

Through the Schwob School of Music, which is based in the College of the Arts, students can choose from more than a dozen bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, minors and certificate options. Enrollment in the school is consistently around 250 students, meaning students receive personalized attention from faculty who are themselves distinguished and award-winning musicians. Q

#NWOPK 0GYU 5CO $TQYP Sam Brown (M.M., 2017) is the Assistant Principal at Rainey-McCullers School of the Arts (RMSOTA) in Columbus.

RMSOTA has a strong track record of academic and artistic excellence resulting in the exiting 8th-grade students being accepted to other top-tier magnet programs in Columbus and the graduating seniors entering programs at prestigious regional and national colleges and universities. Brown built the school’s piano-studio program from a small 25-member studio to a robust 60-member ensemble, resulting in his recognition as a Steinway & Sons Top Teacher. His students earned top ratings and prizes at the local, regional and state levels. In 2019, he joined the faculty of CSU’s Schwob School of Music to teach secondary piano to collegiate music majors.

Brown has performed as a collaborative pianist and has also worked extensively as a rehearsal accompanist for choral masterworks by various composers. He is pursuing his doctorate in educational leadership at Georgia State University. Brown and his wife, Sarah, have two young sons. $NCMG *QTFÅ Blake Hordé (B.M., 2020) is the Associate Director of Bands at Sebastian River High School in Sebastian, Florida. He primarily conducts the Sebastian River Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds. He previously served as the Assistant Director of Bands at Fultondale High School in Birmingham, Alabama. At CSU, he performed with the Schwob Wind Ensemble, Schwob Philharmonic and Schwob Chamber Choir.

Hordé served in multiple leadership roles at Schwob, including the President of the Collegiate National Association for Music Education and the Vice President of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He performed with the Atlanta CV Drum and Bugle Corps as

a Drum Major. He has served on the staff for marching bands across several states in the Southeast, and also has experience in arranging wind music for competitive productions. His professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and the Florida Bandmasters Association.

Andrew Harry Andrew Harry (M.M., 2015; Artist Diploma, 2019) is an Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Point University where he is the Chair of the Fine Arts Department, Director of Choral Activities and piano instructor. He serves First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange as Director of Music and organist where he leads the Chancel Choir and handbell choirs. He also holds the position of Music Director of the Choral Society of West Georgia, a 50-voice community chorus of singers from the region. Harry serves as the Artistic Director of the Csehy Summer School of Music in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, a pre-college chamber music and large ensemble program for middle and high-school students. He is completing his dissertation for a doctorate in music education with an emphasis in higher education leadership. He and his wife, Amanda, have four children – Dillon, Erie, Cyrus and Piper. *UKP + *WCPI Hsin-I Huang (B.M., 2013) is Director of the Vision Arts Organization and a Steinway Educational Partner. He completed his DMA at Stony Brook University in 2019 while teaching at Queens College.

In January 2024, he will tour in New York and Wisconsin and in February he will tour in Asia, performing in Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong and China.

He founded the non-profit Vision Arts Organization in the United Kingdom. The

organization’s launch concert will be in February 2024 and will showcase talented young pianists with the London Festival Chamber Orchestra. He will conduct the orchestra.

'FGT 4KXGTC Eder Rivera (B.M., 2018) has enjoyed a number of recent accomplishments. He won the audition for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Oboe Fellow and joined as second oboe for its production at Los Angeles Opera in Debussy and other programs. Rivera also performed with the New World Symphony as substitute oboe and the New West Symphony as second oboe for a collaboration with Disney Animation in celebration of its 100th anniversary in Los Angeles. He was a 2023 Music Academy of the West Oboe Fellow. .KN[C 7IC[ Lilya Ugay’s (B.M., 2014) music has been performed by the Washington National Opera, Nashville Symphony, Albany Symphony, American Composers Orchestra, New England Philharmonic, Yale Philharmonia, Next Festival, Norfolk Festival Choir, Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, Molinari Quartet, Victory Players and Paul Neubauer among others.

Her compositions have been featured at the Aspen, Norfolk, Cultivate, MIFA, American Composers, Chelsea, New York Electroacoustic Music, June in Buffalo and Darmstadt New Music festivals, as well as the 52nd Venice Biennale. She has received multiple awards. As a pianist she promotes the music of repressed composers in her concert series Silenced Voices and enjoys improvising in concert settings.

The Uzbekistan native holds master’s and doctorate degrees from Yale and serves on the composition faculty at Florida State University.

New Faculty SARA FRUEHE is a versatile artist with a varied career as a chamber musician, orchestral performer, educator and arts administrator. During the six years she performed with Volante Winds, Fruehe performed at premier festivals including Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival, Juneau Jazz and Classics, Chamber Music Wilmington, American Music Festival and Mineral Point Chamber Music Festival, among others. She currently performs with 10th Muse, an all-female reed trio. An advocate of new music with a desire to work with composers of today, Fruehe is active in commissioning and premiering works for bassoon and chamber ensembles. She is in demand as an artist and clinician and frequently performs in solo and orchestral settings, and presents masterclasses throughout the United States.

Fruehe holds a Doctor of Music and Bachelor of Music from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, as well as a Master of Music from DePaul University. He had the opportunity to share the stage with superb artists such as Herbie Hancock, Gustavo Dudamel, Lang Lang and Shlomo Mintz. In chamber music settings Lombardi regularly collaborates with various ensembles including Modular Ensemble, Lombardi Scibelli Duo and the Parker String Quartet. Active and in demand as a jazz musician, he has performed and recorded with Calvert Fountain, Kenosha Kid, Louis Romanos Quartet, The Whitehall Jazz Collective and many other projects. Lombardi is passionate about new music and has premiered works written for him by David Peoples, regularly performed at contemporary music festivals, and composed music for bass solo. As an educator, Luca has worked with a variety of students, having presented

masterclasses in the United States, Italy, and Argentina, directed the Giuseppe Verdi school of music in Castelleone, Italy, and assisted with the University of Georgia bass studio and study abroad. He serves as Adjunct Faculty at the University of North Georgia where he teaches the double bass studio and directs the jazz band. Lombardi holds degrees in double bass performance from the Conservatory “Giuseppe Verdi” of Milan, Italy, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in double bass performance at The University of Georgia.

ESTHER PARK has performed as a soloist with orchestras and in recitals across the United States as well as Asia and major European cities. The pianist has appeared as soloist with many orchestras such as Houston Symphony, Corpus Christi Symphony, Filharmonia Pomorska in Poland, Shanghai Philharmonic in China, the American Academy of Conducting Orchestra at Aspen, Shreveport Symphony, the Juilliard Symphony and the New Jersey Symphony. She gave a five-city recital tour in Korea and has performed at the Juilliard Theater in New York City, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Salle Cortot in Paris and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Park was the winner of the 2013 Jose Roca International piano competition and Russian International piano competition (now San Jose International Piano Competition), 2009 “Prix Amadeo” and the 2009 Chopin Gesellschaft Klavierwettbewerb.

She won the 2004 Gina Bachauer Piano Competition at the Juilliard School and the 52nd Kosciusko International Piano Competition. Park is a founding member of a piano duo with her sister, Sun-A Park. Duo Amadeae has since won the Chicago International Duo Piano Competition and has appeared in numerous festivals, concerto performances and in duo recitals. The duo has been heard on WQXR as well as part of the Horowitz & Stecher Foundation’s piano series. Park received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Juilliard School, studying with Yoheved Kaplinsky. She also studied at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater (Hannover) under the tutelage of Bernd Goetzke, and has since received the Artist Diploma, Master of Musical Arts Degree and the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the Yale School of Music under the guidance of Boris Berman. Park taught at the East Tennessee State University from 2014 to 2022. She has since been serving as the associate professor of music and L. Rexford Whiddon Distinguished Chair in Piano at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University.

He also adjudicated the SERTEC chamber music competition and the NABBA small ensemble competition.

Anne-Marie Cherry Cherry enjoyed a busy season of performances and masterclasses across the country. Highlights included three concerto appearances, frequent performances with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, premiering new works with the San Francisco-Bay area ensemble One Found Sound, recording an album with the Maryland Chamber Winds, joining the Artosphere Festival Orchestra and commissioning several original new works for horn. /KEJGNNG 5JGNNKG &G$TW[P DeBruyn judged at the Classical Singer National Competition in San Francisco in May last year, attended a Body Mapping conference in Charlotte and continued her study of the Italian language in Florence, Italy. She served as music director for the joint music and theatre production of “Into the Woods” last fall and is working on a contract for a song cycle commission for Spring 2024.

Joseph Girard Since spring 2022 Girard has performed in 15 different states with the internationally recognized Sinta Quartet, including at the prestigious Chamber Music Northwest Festival in Portland, Oregon and Bravo! Vail Festival in Colorado. In January 2022 he presented a session on saxophone pedagogy at the Georgia Music Educators Conference in Athens, Georgia. This past spring, he was awarded tenure and promotion to associate professor and looks forward to a bright future at the Schwob School of Music. Early this year he will present a session on successfully integrating chamber music into middle and high school curriculums at the GMEA conference with Dr. Anne-Marie Cherry.

Joseph Golden Golden attended last year’s American Guild of Organists’ Regional Convention in Augusta, Georgia. He also sponsored a recital in memory of Dr. John Schaeffer, former Chair of Fine Arts at Augusta University. The recital featured Jens Korndorfer playing the restored 1850 Jardine organ at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Paul Hostetter Last year Hostetter served as a judge for the Mizzou New Music Initiative, as the principal conductor of Ensemble Flageolet in Flagstaff, Arizona in three series concerts with associated NAU masterclasses, as the principal guest conductor of the Florida Lakes Symphony in four sets of subscription concerts, as a clinician for Music in the Parks, as a mentor for college orchestra conductors through the College Orchestra Directors’ Association, as a consultant for the NEPA Philharmonic and as a member of the Disney World conducting staff. His book, “OnMusic Conducting: Connect to the Sound,” continues to be used by numerous universities nationally. At CSU, he led the ASO Residency at the Schwob School and his conducting student, Enluis Montes Olivar, won the 2nd International Almeria Competition and appeared as an assistant conductor with the Paris Opera and San Diego Symphony.

He served as a voice faculty member at Opera Viva!, an international young artist training program in Verona, Italy. Finally, he served as the opera director of “Don Giovanni” by W.A. Mozart at the Festival of International Opera in Urbania, Italy.

Aaron Jensen Jensen, who joined the CSU faculty in 2023, performed at the Mid-South Horn Workshop with the 956 Brass and with the Valley Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. He was also a performer and clinician at the University of TennesseeKnoxville, Arkansas State University, University of Central Arkansas, University of Tennessee at Martin, Midwestern State University, Southern Arkansas University, and the International Trumpet Guild Conference in San Antonio, Texas. He was also a producer on multiple albums and video projects.

Matthew McCabe McCabe and Graduate Assistant Gabriel Scavassa Borin spent two weeks in Williams Bay, Wisconsin in June working with fourtime Grammy-winning chamber ensemble eighth blackbird at the Yerkes Observatory.

The Blackbird Creative Lab featured new compositions, performances and talks from astronomer Amanda Bauer, theatre director Chris Murrah, storyteller Walt Chadick, and composers Viet Cuong, Pamela Z, Jonathan Bailey Holland and Pulitzer-prize winner Joan Tower. Yerkes is home to the largest refracting telescope ever constructed. Opening in 1898, it is a significant site in astronomy history. Today, Yerkes is being reimagined as a place for Arts and Science to collide, and the Blackbird Creative Lab was the first cohort of artists to be in residence as part of the new initiative.

During Summer 2023, many of her students participated in music festivals, including incoming senior Jalin Graham, who participated in the Zodiac Festival in France. Meidell also performed with the Borromeo String Quartet in Legacy Hall. ,COKG . 0KZ Professional activities in 2022-2023 included conducting the World Youth Wind Symphony at the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp and All-State Bands in Alabama and Missouri.

Nix also guest-conducted the U.S. Army Field Band, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra chamber musicians and at the American Bandmasters Association Conference. He was the featured clinician at the University of ColoradoBoulder and University of Missouri-Kansas City summer conducting symposiums, and at the inaugural and 2nd Annual Texas Pre-UIL Band Festivals. Student success included Josh Kearney promoted to Director of Bands at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Simon Holoweiko promoted to Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Tiger Band at LSU, Brian Walker named 2023 Teacher of the Year at Rainey-McCullers School and former SWE member Phil Broome named Principal Euphoniumist of the “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band.

Lisa Oberlander Oberlander performed by invitation at the International Clarinet Association Conference.

She also took her chamber ensemble of all Schwob faculty and alumni on tour, performing the “Quintet for Clarinet and Strings” by Johannes Brahms throughout the southeast.

Oberlander presented masterclasses at the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College program in New York City and the University of Alabama, as well as in high schools in Georgia and Alabama. Students from her studio won or placed in the Charleston International Music Competition, Birmingham (UK) International Music Competition, the International Mozart Competition, the Euterpe Music Awards and the Golden Classical Music awards, which featured that student performing at Carnegie Hall.

$TCFNG[ 2CNOGT Palmer has hosted the Southeast Trombone Symposium in consecutive summers at the Schwob School of Music since 2010. The symposium is one of the largest annual trombone gatherings, attracting faculty and attendees from around the world. Palmer has performed numerous times with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Alabama Symphony, including performances alongside current and former students. He recruits more than 20 students annually to audition for the Schwob School. Palmer led the Schwob Trombone Ensemble in successful performances on campus and at the Georgia Music Educators Conference. He also presented masterclasses at the Korean Trombone Symposium (Seoul), Baylor, Ohio State, Fresno State, East Carolina and the Universities of Utah, Central Arkansas, Central Florida, North Alabama and Central Washington.

Notable student successes include winning positions in the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Navy Fleet Bands, and fellowships at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Aspen Music Festival.

'UVJGT 2CTM Park returned to the Geneva Music Festival in Geneva, New York, and performed Schubert’s Arpeggione sonata with Vanderbilt viola faculty, Eric Wong and Schumann’s Piano Trio #1 in May 2023. She then traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, to perform at the International Viola Congress with faculty member Katrin Meidell, as well as to present a masterclass at the Piano Academy of Bangkok in June. Last July Park taught and performed at the Atlantic Music Festival in Waterville, Maine, where she joined Schwob piano student, Maria Parrini, who was spending six weeks at the festival as the piano fellow. Then she rejoined her duo partner, Dr. Sun-A Park of UCF, to perform at the Chicago Duo Festival as featured festival artists and teach a masterclass.

Victoria Warnet Last year Warnet published an article with “Research Perspectives in Music Education” on music familiarity and preference. She was also invited by Wenger Music to write an article on common mistakes made with jazz bands. She presented music education research nationally and internationally for the

International Society for Music Education, the Desert Skies Symposium on Research in Music Education and the National Association for Music Education Conference. On the regional level, she presented both research and practitioner sessions at the Georgia and Florida Music Education Association conferences. She also completed a Guest Artist Residency at the University of Louisiana-Monroe and guest lectured at other universities across the US. She became a reviewer for “Update,” a music education research journal, and serves as Communications Chair for part of the International Society for Music Education. $GP 9GCVJGTHQTF Jazz guitarist and educator Weatherford performed from Mobile to Massachusetts in 2023. He played private events and gave public performances while maintaining a private lesson studio and teaching college courses. Notable performances included those in Mobile, Atlanta, Charleston, Virginia Beach, Washington D.C., and Chatham, Massachusetts. Additionally, the Ben Weatherford Organ Trio, featuring Atlanta Braves Organist Matthew Kaminski, played at The Loft in Columbus last September.

Reba Wissner Wissner was named a NAMM/College Music Society Faculty Fellow in Spring 2023 to attend the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, where she attended panels about forward-thinking careers in music. She was also awarded a Teach Access Grant for Summer 2023 to create materials to teach the students enrolled in the Music and Identity class in Fall 2023 about accessibility. The students in the class, most of them enrolled in the Public Musicology Certificate program, will use this information as they create an accessible exhibit at the Columbus Museum on Blues and Folk Music in Columbus that will open when the museum reopens from renovation in mid-2024.
