Safety Meetings and Initiatives

Over the past month, Elzinga & Volkers held safety meetings prior to our progress meetings. The following topics were reviewed: »» Construction death on 8/21

»» Construction fatal four: falls, electrocutions, being struck by an object and getting caught between two objects

»» Professional safety solutions site review

During the professional safety solutions site review, we found that some of our fire extinguishers were not properly tagged.

There were an adequate number of fire extinguishers on-site but a number of them were missing their inspection tags. When we saw this offense come up more than once, E&V reached out to the trade contractors to educate them on this requirement.

Since the meeting, we have not had a fire extinguisher on-site without an inspection tag. The MIOSHA and E&V partnership continues to be an educational opportunity for everyone.

Safety Education

With the interior build-out and exterior masonry ramping up, Elzinga & Volkers found it appropriate that this month’s site safety training be on scaffolding and ladder safety.

Professional Safety Solutions covered proper installation techniques: 18” minimum overlap on planking, planking must be made from scaffold-rated lumber, base supports and proper guardrail/fall protection system.

This was an important topic with TL Masonry on-site and the amount of scaffolding they will use. It provided a good refresher for this group as well as education for the workers new to construction.

Project Progress

As the weeks pass, the project continues to move forward.

Since our last update, the exterior skin of the building has started to take shape. Bouma Corporation has installed all of the metal studs on the north and west elevations and put the DensGlass sheathing in place. Now when you drive by the site, the building will shine a bright green. The next element is setting the Tyveck weather barrier and water shield on the east elevation. This opens up work for TL Masonry. TL has installed 45% of the east wall brick veneer, which you can see in the following photos.

While the exterior is in the visible final phases, the interior is still in the rough stages of construction. With Godwin and Allied on board, we have completed the underground plumbing and electrical portion of the project. Godwin installed under-slab storm and sanitary lines two weeks ago and completed the entire garden level. Allied followed behind to install the below-slab conduits. High Point joined the underslab fun by installing the transformer and generator conduits in their final locations.

While the progression of the exterior and interior is exciting to see, we still have a long way to go. All of the crews on-site have put forth a great effort but, at this stage, we need to build momentum.
