Samaritas - Saginaw Campus - Addition & Renovation

Memory Wing Corridor

Project Update Work has continued in Phase 3 on the Memory Care Wing and Main Entry. We have encountered difficulties with electrical & fire alarm conduits being located within the floor slab or directly underneath. We have cut several conduits in the process of removing floor slab areas for new plumbing. Finding hidden plaster damage in the Resident Room Toilet Rooms has also required additional work. At this time we are waiting for the fire marshal to set a final inspection date for the Memory Care Wing.

Work is also underway on the building exterior at the Main Entry and Therapy Gym/Living Room additions. The site is being prepared for the completion of sidewalks and curbing.

I will be retiring at the end of March after 43 years in the construction industry. I will miss not being involved in the completion of this project and working with the many great people involved, but it’s time to move on to the next chapter in my life. I’m handing the project off to the very capable hands of Senior Project Manager, Brett Lesiewicz, and Assistant Project Manager, Max Schmidt, who will bring a new energy to the final stages of the project.

In Phase 3 of Memory Care Wing, we will be working through finishes and finals for the completion and turnover to Samaritas. The Phase 3 New Entry Addition finishes are also being installed for turnover. The exterior brick is complete, as well as concrete walks at the entry and courtyard garden. We are currently working on exteriors improvements as the weather allows, looking to top-coat the parking lot and landscape soon.

The Therapy Addition demolition will start after Easter and we’re working on pre-planning for Phase 5 in the kitchen.

SAFETY Matters Hardhat History Hard hats are a required piece of personal protective equipment on all Elzinga & Volkers project sites. This attention to safety, however, has certainly evolved through the years. In the early 1900s, shipyard workers covered their caps with tar and let them harden in the sun. This primitive hard hat protected workers from debris that dropped from the ship decks. In 1919, a cap made of canvas, glue and black paint was created. It was coined the “Hard-Boil Hat” due to the manufacturing process. Some of the first construction sites to mandate hard hat usage were the Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate Bridge. Since then, hard hats have kept developing – fashioned from a variety of materials and able to support a multitude of accessories.

We would like to personally congratulate Brad Frey on his retirement from Elzinga & Volkers. Everyone has enjoyed working with him and considers him to not only be a valuable asset to our company, but an enjoyable presence on the Samaritas construction project as well. While Brad will be missed by all of us at Elzinga & Volkers, he certainly deserves his retirement. His hard work and diligence have greatly benefited our company, and we hope the remaining employees here will strive to follow Brad’s stellar example.
