Historians believe the first log cabins in North America were built by Swedish and other Scandinavian settlers.

Many of their homes were elevated on short stilts. This kept small animals from entering the house, minimized water damage from the moist ground and kept the home warmer in the winter. In addition, the doors of many log cabins faced south to get the most sun exposure during the day.

Executive Summary This project is an exciting one for me. While in college, I worked with a builder framing and building houses. The residential style construction used for The Cottages project brings back memories of framing walls, installing top plates, and swinging trusses into place!

While I no longer swing that 22-ounce waffle head hammer, I still enjoy being part of projects like this one. When complete, we will have built 8 independent living units that will be homes to several residents in the fantastic community of Maple Creek. Stay tuned as the project progresses!

The Look Ahead

Since we broke ground in late July, things have been moving quickly. Trusses and lumber arrive daily as we continue to frame each cottage. Curious residents watching from a distance seem to be enjoying the new scenery and great weather we’ve been having. As we get further into August, the plan is to begin roofing, siding and interior rough-ins for each of the cottages.
