Mercy Health Saint Mary’s - Ninth Floor Renovation
Patient Room Ceiling
Siding removal and new window installation
Hello Again! It’s hard to believe that over month has passed since our last update. Needless to say, these past few weeks have been busy with activity on the 9th floor. In our previous update we mentioned the complexity of through-floor tie-ins, but I did not explain what “through-floor tie-ins” are. For anyone new to this term, the hospital has ductwork, electrical conduit, water lines, med-gas lines, steam lines, chilled water lines, storm drains, sanitary drains and many more utilities that run vertically through the entire bed tower of the hospital. Almost all of these items are out of sight, buried within walls, or hidden above the ceiling. Each serves a specific need to keep the hospital functioning properly and more importantly, serve patients. On a project like the 9th floor renovation, a new room layout was created to provide a space that better suited a modern Obstetric Unit. In other words, all of the new walls are in different locations from the old. Everything that was once “hidden” must now be temporarily shut down, cut above the ceiling on the 8th floor, re-routed to the new ‘hide-out” within a wall on the 9th floor and then be reconnected so that the system or utility can be brought back online. Everything must be coordinated and routed between the 8th floor and the 9th floor, hence the term “through-floor tie-ins”. As of today, we are happy to report that the through-floor tie-ins for phase 1 are complete. This milestone has officially ended the rough-in phase of the project and has kicked off what we call the finish phase, where colors and materials bring life to the unit. Drywall is now finished throughout the area and paint crews have applied their first coat of paint to nearly all walls. Bathroom tile is nearing completion, followed closely by bathroom and patient room flooring. Carpenters have installed all of the patient room casework and are now working on units in the corridors, such as the collaboration hubs and family nourish stations. Up above, new ceilings are being installed, providing space for electricians to set new light fixtures. The mechanical crews are next, laying in grills/diffusers, while plumbers hook up sinks, shower valves and radiant heaters. Looking forward, crews will continue to work on finishes, moving in a clockwise motion around the floor until each room is complete. The transformation that will occur over the coming month will certainly be an exciting time for the project! Brett Lesiewicz, Project Manager brettl@elzinga-volkers.com
