ALWAYS KEEP LEARNING

CORY LOOMANS SENIOR PRECONSTRUCTION MANAGER On Tuesday, May 7, E&V received the Elite award for the Best & Brightest category of Employee Education & Development! Companies are evaluated by the “extent to which an organization encourages, supports and creates a learning environment with a focus on career development”. Our submission included highlights on our E&V YOUniversities, ABC courses, Field Leadership Training, Lunch & Learns, Blueprint for Success training, safety training, conference attendance and much more. E&V invested over $110,000 in employee education & development in 2018! The regional average score for this category was 29.76 and we came in at 38.53, almost 30% above the average. Depending on your stakeholder role in the company, there are different ways to fill your toolbox with what you need to get the job done. For example, a few years ago, Joe Shashaguay attended an American Society of Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) conference to become a Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC). At the time, we were doing a lot of work at Holland Hospital and he saw the opportunity to invest in his career and get the certification. After talking with him about it, he reflected on that being a big turning point in his career to have the knowledge and confidence to work in healthcare facilities.

Many of our trade employees are taking part in courses through Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC). These classes include Carpentry I, Plans & Specifications, Safety Training, FMI Training, Leadership Series, and other skilled trade training programs. A couple years ago, Ryan Fuller - Interiors Division Manager, recognized he needed some leadership training to help him manage the growing division and team. He took it upon himself to seek out a program at Davenport University that enhanced his leadership experience and created opportunities for him and his team to increase their capacity and be more productive. So what is the next step for you? Maybe it is grabbing a book off the shelf in the main office. Or is it a certification? Think about what training and education opportunities would help you reach your short-term and long-term goals. Challenge yourself to discuss it at your next check-in with your supervisor. Increasing your value takes time and hard work and it all begins with your desire for self-improvement through education and training. There are many people in the company willing to help out, so do not be afraid to reach out to the OLT, FLT and Employee Education and Development committee members.
