ALIVE365: SAFETY WEEK
PROJECT MANAGEMENT UPDATE
Last week, E&V kicked off our 5th annual Safety Week with our Safety Symposium. The event was subtitled, Developing a World Class Safety Culture and focused on guiding attendees through the steps of establishing such a culture in their corporations. Any person in the West Michigan construction industry who is responsible for ensuring safety in their organization was encouraged to attend. Nine training sessions were also held on the following topics throughout the remainder of the week: First Aid, CPR and AED, Lift Training, OSHA 10 Hour, Scaffolding Training, Silica Standard, Fall Protection, Qualified Rigger and Lunch with MIOSHA. Over 500 people participated in this week of events and E&V is proud to be a part of building a better safety culture throughout West Michigan.
Welcome back! As we catch glimpses of the warm weather, the anticipation for consistent productivity around the construction site is beginning to peak. The construction team continues to chip away on all three projects, however, it feels like more of a waiting game as progress has been hindered due to “frost laws. These dreadful frost laws, also known as seasonal restrictions, are enforced by the local jurisdiction to limit the amount of weight that can be hauled or transported on certain roads. As the ground beneath these roads begin to thaw, the asphalt is susceptible to buckling and heaving which could result in damage under heavy loads. As you may have noticed, the construction process includes many moving parts that endure mass amounts of weight. Whether the task is transporting a piece of machinery to and from the site or hauling material for backfill, the entire construction team has been faced with these obstacles, forcing everyone to shift their focus on plans to make up lost time. On a positive note, once the frost laws are alleviated, April presents an abundance of opportunity for the construction team to make up the lost time and get back on track. We hope that you stay tuned as we turn the corner and march into Spring. Matt Wintjes, Assistant Project Manager MattW@elzinga-volkers.com
