Water
Volume 1, Issue 3
From the Executive Director In all of my best summer memories, there is water. Running through the sprinkler, getting completely soaked by water balloons, tubing down the Platte River, and endless afternoons with friends at the neighborhood pool. One especially memorable summer we collected glass jars and filled them with varying depths of colored water to make a xylophone of sorts. It made a surprisingly beautiful and melodic sound and we cleared a whopping $7 in ticket sales at the instruments’ premiere (and only) performance. Through the work of EIA, my summer days still include water and it is deeply gratifying to think that the infrastructure we are building will become a part of the “summer” memories of the children whose lives are forever changed by their completion. Imagine the day when water started flowing to the new lavatories built in your school – ending the use of an open latrine. What must it be like to help tend and harvest (and eat!) vegetables now growing in newly irrigated garden plots? How exciting to meet students from another country and walking with them across a new bridge – conquering a river that once kept you from school for many months of the year. These summer memories are provided by the many generous donors and volunteers who make our work possible. We appreciate you and thank you for helping us make the best summer memories – ones that leave communities, and their precious children, healthier and stronger. Happy Summer!
Water is at the heart of Engineers In Action’s mission. With our community partners, we build systems and infrastructure that provide water that is clean and accessible for drinking and cooking, for sanitation and good hygiene, and for growing food. When it is a barrier to school, healthcare or employment, we construct safe passage over it. To change lives and transform communities - “Just Add Water.”
