Stress Free Wedding Day 10 QUESTIONS YOU DIDN'T KNOW TO ASK


Unless it’s a diamond necklace or a brand new car, surprises are rarely welcome on your wedding day. To prevent any deer-in-headlight stares or tears the day-of, here are 10 questions you need to ask.

1. What staff will be present?
 You’ve secured your caterer, florist and photographer, but there’s probably some staff you forgot to ask about. For instance, who will be the person on the night. Many venues have different supervisors for the different events happening. If you’re celebrating at a large venue with multiple events, make sure staff will greet your guests and direct them to the appropriate function space. 2. Will I own the photos?
 Ask your photographer who will own the rights to the photos after your wedding day. Check if they will be used for promotional material will you be notified. This is not always a bad thing, its a bit special seeing your photo in a magazine or online. 3. Do you charge overtime fees?
 Ask all of your creative partners if they charge an overtime fee. If your party goes two hours over the scheduled end time, you can rack up some serious overtime fees between your DJ, catering staff, photographer and lighting crew. That’s a huge amount, so if there are charges be sure to pull the plug on time. 4. What's your specialty?
 Ask your photographer, florist, baker and caterer what their specialty is. If you’re looking for a wedding cake made entirely from fondant flowers, but the baker only works with fresh blooms, move on. As much as you may love their work, you don’t want to be the guinea pig!


5. Where is the food coming from?
 It’s so important to know exactly where your food is coming from. If you have special food preferences please check with the caterer before you sign a contract. Hiring a local always helps with them sourcing local produce and making sure you get the very best of all local options. 6. Will my wedding be the only one on-site?
 Take it from someone who has worked in the event industry… if a venue has five function rooms, management will try their absolute hardest to fill all five function rooms on any given day. If you have your hopes set on being the only event in that venue on your wedding day, ask in advance and re-think your options if it’s not a possibility. Check what their plan is for managing guest arrivals, transporting wedding party and wedding photos. 7. What lighting features do you offer?
 We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Lighting can change the entire feel of your event, so make sure you give enough attention to it! Ask about the venue's lighting capabilities and if they have dimmer switches. Keep in mind that whatever you don't light up will fall into the darkness once the sun sets.  At the very least, use candles generously. They make everyone look young and fabulous. 8. What else is included?
 Ask all of your suppliers! Many things are often included but if you don't mention it the supplier doesn’t know that you may need it. For example many venues include a cake knife, your reception venue may offer linens in a different colour, your photographer may have a few props / signs for your bridal party photos or the limo driver may offer endless amounts of champagne…. Kidding on that last one (kind of ).  9. Can I see previous work?
 Ask to see creative partners' previous work, and not just their best work they initially present to you. After viewing their portfolios, ask if they have any additional photos they can show you. Check out their testimonials on Facebook and Google. It's also perfectly acceptable to stalk their work on Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram. 10. What will staff wear?
 Make sure you know exactly what your celebrant, DJ, catering staff, bartenders and driver will be wearing on your wedding day. Make sure the look is cohesive and subtle. Hint: black will never go out of style.  Remember: if you don’t ask, you don’t get! Don't be afraid to politely ask bold questions and get as much information as possible. You don’t know what you don't know. You’ll be happy you did in the long run.

What Exactly Should You Get Them?

Before jumping in and deciding what to get, you have a few things to consider. First, you're not obligated to get everyone the same present. What works for one person might not work for another, so don't be afraid to give different gifts, but all within the same price range. That way, everyone knows you took the time to pick out something just for them. We also encourage you to gift them something multifunctional and timeless. (Don't forget to take travel logistics into account: A nice bottle of wine and set of wine glasses is a great present, but hard to pack in a suitcase and carry on a flight.)

Anything with their name or monogram is a good call—think leather goods, jewellery, phone cases, robes or pyjamas. Gifts with bridesmaid-related phrases are fun for the bachelorette party or getting-ready festivities, but probably not something they'll use outside of your wedding. You can also branch out and get creative. Gift cards to workout classes, a blow-dry bar, their favourite restaurant or theatre tickets are always appreciated. When in doubt, take the "would I want it?" test. Or why not make something? Jars of homemade jam, hand-poured candles or a sentimental scrapbook are perfect picks for the crafty bride.


When Should You Get Them?

Shopping for bridesmaid gifts doesn't have a specific timeline, but it's better to get them sooner rather than later. Aim for no later than one to two months before your wedding, since the last thing you want to do the week before your wedding is shop for presents. In the months leading up to your celebration, keep an eye out for fabulous finds. You might encounter a great off-season sale or stumble upon something perfect while creating your registry.

How Much Should You Spend?

Consider two main things when budgeting for bridesmaid gifts: how much your wedding budget will allow, and how much your bridesmaids are shelling out for you. The first question is obviously the most important—spend what you can, remembering that it's really how thoughtful the gift is that counts. But do ask yourself what you've been asking financially of your bridesmaids. Depending on your wedding, they could already be paying for a plane ticket, hotel room, dress and shoes—not to mention the bridal shower, hens party, your wedding and shower gifts, and more. You're certainly not expected to cover what they've spent, but you should be spending enough to say, "I appreciate the time, effort and money you've put into this wedding." Something between $75 and $150 should suffice. The maid/matron of honour typically receives a bit more lavish gift than the others, as it's typically her job to act as point person for pre-wedding events and more. Consider spending a little extra on her for the extra mile she's gone for you. And don't forget about flower girls and junior bridesmaids (you can spend a little less on them).

When Should You Actually Give Them?

You can present gifts to your wedding party at the rehearsal dinner or the day of your wedding, either at brunch or lunch, or while getting ready together. You could also have a separate meal, like a fun bridal brunch or dinner, a few days before the wedding and do it then. If you’re already exchanging gifts with your almost-spouse and parents in the hours leading up to your ceremony and feel overwhelmed, the rehearsal dinner is a good idea. When you decide to give your bridesmaid gifts might also depend on what you give them. If it’s something you want them to wear during the wedding day—like jewellery, getting-ready robes, cuff links or customised sneakers to slip into at the party—present them while you’re getting ready. That way no one risks losing it or forgetting it in their hotel room. If it’s not something they’re meant to wear or have at the wedding—a gift card, beauty products, picture frame or wine paraphernalia—hand it out at the rehearsal dinner so they don’t need to worry about keeping track of it throughout the busy wedding day.

There are two main questions your cake maker will ask you the first time you chat with them–

“How many guests are you expecting?” “Will your cake be your dessert?”

Both of these answers will determine the size of the cake you will need in order for everyone to get a slice.

Generally speaking, if you are having a three course meal at your reception and dessert is included you would only need “Coffee Service” this would then be a small slice of cake that guests could have with coffee or take home.

!

If your venue is providing a two course meal and you want to use the wedding cake for dessert, the slice of cake needs to be bigger so that the chef in the kitchen can give each guest a dessert sized piece of cake and then they generally garnish with fruit coulis and cream.

!

Helpful Hint - check with your reception venue what additional charges there are for using your own wedding cake? They vary from venue to venue and also what is included.
