Residency Addition
Semester 1 | Design Studio 1 | Maria Sieira
Beginning with a series of mechanical objects, I performed a series of operations to create an initial object. After multiple iterations and physical model trials, I landed on an object with an articulated surface. This object was then “crashed” into House 14, where I broke the piece into three smaller pieces to manipulate throughout the house. After settling on my layout of my object, I began to trim and piece together my object in combination with House 14. The end result led to a section of House 14, with the combined object, that contained a new series of spaces for my Writer. I went about creating specific spaces designated for work, rest, and other complimentary spaces to fit the program. The final step was to create both physical and digital models, where I was tasked with moving away from direct representation of materials.

Modeling & Drawing
Semester 1 | Mediums 1 | Sandra Nataf
Mediums 1 focused on modeling and drawing techniques. I began by creating a composite of multiple photographs, which were then 3D modeled to be as close to the object we had created in the composite. Through numerous rounds, the object was finally completed and textured for the first pin-up. We were then tasked with creating a relief that our model could sit or float above in, as well as a background for the final diorama. I was inspired by weathering, specifically with sand and dust. I went with the theme of uncovering golden treasure amongst dirt and dust for my final diorama.

BENEATH THE CANOPY
Semester 2 | Design Studio 2 | Andrew Heid
Inspired by the Montessori method, Beneath the Canopy is a design for a middle school in Red Hook. The focus of this project was to create a school that disrupted the traditional layout, bringing openness and freedom through the hallways and classrooms. The shapes created were taken from a topography study of Red Hook and extracted into a pattern that was later tested on multiple typologies to see how these shapes would sit. Then following the topography, these shapes were extruded at various heights to create a multi-layered canopy, paired with tall mushroom columns designed to create both outdoor space and ornamentation. Classroom walls were broken down and outdoor courtyards were created to allow for free movement throughout the spaces and the individual pods that make up the entirety of the building. Fit with green roofs as well, there are outdoor spaces amongst the canopy to allow for outdoor access.

EXPLORATION CORRIDOR
Semester 2 | Mediums 2 | Benjamin Martison
The project began with building Chunk 18 in Revit. Once the base chunk was created it was moved into Rhino for a series of explorations based off multiple drawings. The drawings created focused on curves at a 45 degree angle were used throughout section and plan drawings. Edges from these drawings were incorporated into the original Chunk to further develop it. Representation was important in this project so rendering played a large role in finishing the original chunk. The second part of the assignment was to take a smaller chunk of the large chunk and to explore different ideas in various programs such as Z-Brush and Grasshopper. Through these explorations I landed on the final chunk, a combination crumbling old pieces and modern and clean elements. These two create contrast between the old and new and when light is added, creates a brighter composition.

ALTERED ESTATES
HDB Alteration & Addition
Set in Singapore, the goal of this project was to create an addition to an existing building, the building being Singapore’s famous Golden Mile Complex. The building itself has stood around for many decades and was once a popular hub for locals. With the declining state and plans to demolish, our task was to revitalize the existing in hopes to bring new life to the site. My partner and I’s goals were to extend what was there upon the facade and to extract life into the abandoned space in the center from the streets. We punched out terraces and a pit to create new green spaces. Circulation was installed to pull in pedestrians from the busy street below so that they too could enjoy the newly developed green space. Singapore’s landscape thrives on community and greenery, which we aimed to build within our addition.

ELE-VATED LIVING Affordable Housing
The site of Farragut Houses is a NYCHA development situated between Vinegar Hill, Dumbo, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. We immediately noticed upon our visit how disconnected the site was from the bustling surrounding neighborhoods. The lack of vibrancy and community caught our interest and became the main focus of our site strategy, however we also noticed an abundance of unusable green space. Our building strategy purposefully intersected the existing Farragut apartments in order to expand on what was already present. To implement the idea of revitalization of the community, we chose to introduce spaces that previously did not exist within the Farragut Houses, thus greatly improving the existing residents as well as the anticipated new community. The form itself was derived from a logical organization, beginning with creating a grid of apartments ranging from studio units to two-bedroom duplexes. The elevated outdoor space weaves in between the grid of apartments to provide residents with accessible and unique green space. The structure is split based on public and private spaces so that residents are given their own space within the apartment structure, but are able to access the diverse community of the surrounding Brooklyn area. Within the community center, resources for both mental and physical health are provided for both residents and the general community. The plan to implement a community center, stems from the idea of giving back to the Farragut community, by creating jobs and volunteer opportunities within the programming. The hope is that Ele-vated Living revitalizes the community that already exists, while inviting new energy to the uniquely re-imagined structure.
