A love letter to the perpetually tired, overscheduled and underappreciated.

Dear mothers, In this inaugural issue of Unzipped I would like to reassure you that here we welcome the chaotic, bedraggled and harassed. We do not pretend to have it all together and would like to muddle through the game of life together with you as equals just trying to survive the fact that now we re the grown-ups in the room. How the f**k did that happen? To make matters worse the past year has truly been a testament to human endurance, but for none so much as the heroic parent. I never knew how much I appreciated the dulcet tones of my colleagues until they were replaced with a cacophony of unruly chaos that became my new office, come nursey, come purgatory.

If there was ever a time to drop any pretence of achieving a work life balance whatever that looks like, sit down, pour a glass of wine and have a good old whinge with a friend, it would be now. So, plonk the kids in front of the TV as we admit the more unfortunate details of motherhood, chuckle about mishaps and commiserate over lost hours of sleep.

Mothers are a bundle of contradictions that cannot be defined by glossy pages, but don t worry we won t even try!

A plague of perfectionism has hit the mothering stratosphere and denied modern day mothers their labour given right to complain, vent and tantrum about the exhausting task of dragging another human being into this world. But why are we still playing pretend?

„Acting like mothers are plastic dolls, with permanently painted smiles and a plucky attitude

Mothers must talk in code about their little angles through gritted teeth and tight smiles, when they know full well there were tears, tantrums and bargaining on both sides before anyone could leave the house. Whilst no one can deny the intense love a mother feels for her children, that is all we ever hear, when the real story is a chaotic trudge to bedtime each night.

There is no way to compete with the ridiculous standards we see online and the ludicrous expectations at work and home, so why are we acting like mothers are plastic dolls, with permanently painted smiles and a plucky attitude?

Catastrophe No mother has ever looked up from her surroundings knee deep in nappies, fractions and fishfingers and thought #FamilyGoals, she is actually wondering how she got stuck doing maths homework at thirty-seven and if her toddler would notice if she put him to bed an hour early. But, a quick whizz around Instagram would convince you that every mother is always well- dressed with perfectly pressed and braided kids, gracefully sauntering through like balancing a laptop on her nose and a child on her hip. In Kerry Washington s words her finest role is the well rested woman . The truth of the matter is that mothers know the horror of realising you have created a monster all too well in the darkest moments of parenting that push you to your wits end and invite the passive aggressive tuts of onlookers. I asked three working mothers about their experiences of the idealised image of mothering and how they dealt with the minor catastrophes of motherhood.

Anne a doctor and mother of four shared her most trying encounter with the constant dance they call motherhood. The well intentioned and dutiful woman brought her threeyear-old daughter and friend to music class to help nurture their developing minds as all the books command. I felt quite pleased with myself for managing to wrangle two toddlers into leaving the house , whilst seven months pregnant and feeling like a lead balloon . But upon arrival the two ringleted demons immediately established their utter disinterest for such proceedings (-sadly the teenage gene can start that early!) and set upon guiltily scheming in the corner. In a flash, the two had whipped into the bathroom, locked the door and staged a sit in , leaving a heavily pregnant woman with no way of reaching the two toddlers she had foolishly offered to take to a nice class and a swarm of tutters began circling. What follows is a true testament to the equal mix of heroism and begrudging duty that mothers call on in such times. Anne seven months pregnant, scaled the cubicle side, huffing and puffing with a completely altered centre of gravity and retrieved the two delinquents. That certainly wasn t in the job description!

Shameful Encounters There is this weird mix of equal parts shame and bemusements that comes over a mother when she reveals a story of bad mothering, which more often than not is just a woman admitting to being a human being capable of making a small mistake (often with hilarious consequences). Elizabeth, a full-time promoter and mother of one described when her seven your old at the time pulled the emergency brake on a moving train; making a carriage full of enemies and forcing her mother to turn an unfortunate shade of puce.

Whilst this may be a rather extreme example, given the right set of circumstances it could happen to any unsuspecting mother with a curious child and a preoccupied moment. The sea of horrified faces made her feel awash with inadequacy despite having only had five hours of sleep and a stressful work week to contend with before even factoring in the hyperactive human of agitated attention . Kids really are capable of anything! But maybe if we all stopped pretending that women grow into the Barbies of childhood, with pink convertibles and teeny tiny power suits than mothers might be able to get on with their lives in peace, they have enough to do, without suffering the judgement of a hundred commuters.

Mothers love always, but like only most of the time. Sarah a thirty-five-year-old artist, regaled the tale of a fateful supermarket trip that will send a shiver down your spine and bring a sweat to your upper lip. Now anyone who has had the honour and privilege of bringing life into the world will know that you never under any circumstances bring your child into the supermarket for fear of the public tantrum. But Sarah s four-year-old brought new heights to the performance in a chilling phycological game of chicken. I knew the risk, but had just picked up my son from school and quite frankly I had sh** to do so though I d just pop in and grab a few things , kid in tow. Predictably her son found a plastic piece of garbage that he just had to have and promptly situated himself on the ground and I prepared for a belter . But, it never came, instead I took a step towards him and I don t know you were the words out of his mouth. People started to look, ears pricked all over the shop, and for good reason this was a serious accusation, but this poor mother died inside from the attention. After a dust up with the security, several forms of evidence tears from son and mother the two left the supermarket somehow shorter than when they entered. Now if this anecdote teaches us anything it is the impressive level of evil mastermind that our own spawns are capable of on occasion. Yet, mothers are expected to be vivaciously embracing life s little hiccups .

Motherhood is no playtime and we need to stop expecting the moon, sun and stars from working mothers. There is no cookie cutter, plastic way to deliver on all of the things you are supposed to do. Mothers aren t made of plastic, but they do stand on their own two feet, which is more than Barbie can say.

We all remember the unfortunate days of hairspray clouds and severe shoulders that would announce a woman s presence in an office. Personally, I don t see the commanding effect of obscene shoulders and outfits that were all belt, but that was the way to be taken seriously in a sea of dull grey suits. I myself remember my mother setting out for work in the mornings adorned in the classic en route stocking and sneakers look ready to take on the world; liberated by the knowledge that her working girl heels were safely tucked in her bag.

Now we have abandoned the 80 s (thank god!) and moved on to even more confusing times of business casual, a phrase yet to be deciphered by any woman walking this earth. I know for me the past year has been spent entirely in mullet outfits: business on the top, sadness on the bottom, but with the return to the office looming and my attitude fresh out of sh**s to give I have been left wondering what on earth I will put on my body in order

to achieve the desperately necessary task of re-joining the world and the workforce. As my children were thankfully released into the wild again as schools start to return to normal, I noticed myself envying their school uniforms and the simplicity of knowing exactly what you have to wear each day.

Pitiful moment aside I think I have found my answer. Minimal fashion seems to be the closest, socially acceptable equivalent to wearing pyjamas outside and just how I will ease back into the inane conversations with giddy colleagues, excited just to be allowed out of the zoom universe. I have discovered after endless scrolling and much deliberation that CoCo Chanel s infamous phrase you can never go wrong with a little black dress has a sister directive you can never go wrong with a neutral look and a stretchy waistband .

If you stick to simple pieces and a neutral pallet you can trick people into thinking you have spent hours

curating an elegant, yet professional ensemble, when in reality you just scrambled into whatever you could grab in between tantrums and dragging the kids out the door.

With an arsenal of simple, clean pieces you can confidently rock elastic waistbands, jeans and my personal favourite the sack dress to the office and easily command a room; knowing that you ve gamed the system.

Unfortunately, now that I know what wonders of comfort and professionalism that minimal dressing can provide I have somewhat of a financial burden. The likes of Fillipa K, COS, Eileen Fisher and Organic Basics have ingeniously ensnared me into shelling out ridiculous sums for plain t-shirts, but I am blissfully aware of my problem and I don t care.

Whilst like everyone else I am anxious to re-enter the world and start living my life again I am glad that I don t have to completely leave behind the comfort of board meetings in pyjamas.
