OCTOHAVEN APARTMENTS

SPRING 2023

URBAN INSTITUTIONS STUDIO

NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY

In an effort to contribute to the City of Boston’s affordable housing program, Octohaven Apartments confronts the issue and aims to redefine urban living by providing an inclusive environment. These complexes cater to diverse needs, offering a range of housing options. Located on Jarvis Street, Octohaven Apartments promises a peaceful and unified living community.

Third Iteration Floor Plans

The panopticon is a theoretical architectural design conceived by philosopher Jeremy Bentham in the late 18th century. It features a central observation tower surrounded by cells, enabling a single observer to monitor all inmates without them knowing whether they are being watched, fostering a sense of constant surveillance and self-discipline.

By inverting this concept, I produced a housing complex design to have an octagonal circulation core, with various types of private apartment units fanning out from the center in petal-like forms. Octohaven apartments provide a safe haven for unity and community with each and every neighbor.

Boston Chinatown Library

FALL 2022

SITE, SPACE, AND PROGRAM STUDIO NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY

Addressing the lack of a permanent Boston Public Library Branch serving the city’s Chinatown, this project imagines what that library branch would look like and its role as social infrastructure for the community.

Programmatic Adjacencies

The angular first floor of the Boston Chinatown Library serves as a space primarily dedicated to library programming. At the heart of the building stands the main staircase and elevator, a focal point that guides visitors to the second floor and gives them a peek at the fluid and organic shape of the second floor’s architecture. This level is designed to inspire interaction and communal experiences. With its sweeping curves and open layout, the second-floor houses gathering spaces, fostering a sense of inclusivity and collaboration.

ICA’s Sequence of Spaces

SPRING 2023

ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL COMMUNICATIONS

NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY

The ICA in Boston stands as a vibrant cultural hub at the forefront of contemporary art and discourse. Their adjustable wall system is an ingenious architectural feature that enhances the museum’s flexibility and adaptability. This dynamic system allows for the seamless reconfiguration of exhibition space, accommodating a diverse range of artworks and ensuring a constantly evolving and immersive experience for visitors.

The use of rearrangeable walls affects the visitors’ experiences at the museum, one aspect specifically being circulation and the speed at which they make their way around the fourth floor.

Here, you’ll find an interactive model crafted from concrete and frosted acrylic components representing fixed and adaptable walls, respectively. The rearrangeable walls at the ICA are situated on a grid, allowing for effortless modification of the layout to accommodate various exhibitions.

“While strolling through my museum, I was pleasantly surprised at the artwork being displayed. But my workers had forgotten to change out the exhibit for tonight’s event! I scrambled to turn off the projection, move the wall for more lighting, and hang up the new artwork for our visitors. I finished just in time and the event lasted til nightfall.”

Cavity Wall Construction Section Drawing

This project prepared students to draw construction documents and allowed them to practice clarity, legibility, and ease of locating information. To the right is a wall section of a two-story brick veneer with a CMU backup cavity wall located in the northeast of the USA, which has a full basement and a green roof system, also cutting through a window at each level. Completed while considering the specific parameters stated, outline specifications for the footings, foundation walls, CMU and brick cladding, and interior finishes were also prepared.

AB MCDONALD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OUTDOOR

CLASSROOM CASE STUDY

Chosen as a precedent for a wooden case study, the AB Mcdonald elementary school outdoor classroom showcases many connections, some of which include utilizing custom pre-fabricated metal plates. Through this study, we discovered many new woodworking techniques and produced a 1:20 scale, manually assembled, laser-cut model.
