Jazz Jubilee by the Sea January 12 - 15, 2023

to the

It has been 3 years since we hosted a live Jazz Jubilee by the Sea, but not for lack of trying or planning. In 2020, around July, we decided that we would not be able to hold a live festival and needed to have a virtual festival instead. We executed this event with great success and felt confident that we would be able to hold an in-person event the following year. We started planning in early 2021, continuing all the way through August before it became apparent that we would not be able to pull it off. Instead, we hosted the biggest back yard Livestreamed show that we had ever thrown- The Creole Syncopators followed by Tom Rigney and Flambeau. It was a huge success by back yard standards, but still not a festival.

In order to have an event, you must first have venues, and it was a good six months into 2022 before we were assured that we would be able to secure the venues we needed to host an event of this size. We have been wanting to try moving the date to January for quite some time, and this was our golden opportunity. We were also hoping to finally get past the pandemic and all of its associated anxiety and restrictions.

So here we are in January of 2023. As it happens, we are hosting this event during Martin Luther King weekend and to that end, are trying to add a dimension to our line-up that will honor the spirit of this holiday.

Speaking of honoring, it is our pleasure this year to highlight Mr. Willard Blackwell, leader and founder of the great band Gator Nation, with our cover painting by the supremely talented Priscilla Wilson. Mr. Blackwell and his band have brought a lot of joy to this and other festivals throughout the west, and we are pleased to have him perform and feature him on our cover.

Our goal at Jazz Jubilee this year and every year is to throw a huge party and invite everyone to it. You are all guests at our party! We want every set to knock your socks off.

We are here to show you a good time and we want to have a good time too! So let’s do it! Let the party begin.

Basin Street Regulars Youth and Scholarship Program ● Summer of 2022

Basin Street Regulars is committed to the preservation of Traditional Jazz by promoting and making it relevant to the younger generation. Our club provides a place where young musicians can learn how to play Traditional Jazz alongside older, experienced, and supportive jazz musicians.

We financially support and provide a venue for local schools’ jazz musicians to perform at our Sunday sessions in front of an enthusiastic live audience. This past year we welcomed the Tevis Rangers Junior High School Band from Bakersfield, the Ernest Righetti High School Jazz Band from Santa Maria, the Mady Frei Group from the Cal Poly Jazz Studies Program, Voce, a premier vocal Jazz ensemble and the Limbic Liberation Orchestra from Cuesta College. Each school is given a small stipend for their jazz music program. We also pass the hat for additional donations from those present at their performances.

During the summer we send as many interested young people as we can find to the Teagarden Jazz Camp in Sacramento, and the Cuesta College Jazz Workshop. This past year, we sent eight young musicians to the Sacramento camp and 2 young musicians to the Cuesta College Jazz Workshop. Our club contributed $6,627 to fund these nine scholarships. One of our scholarship recipients now comes early to every Sunday concert to help set up for the day, plays in the jam sets with the experienced musicians, and stays to hear the professional musicians.

The Basin Street Regulars (The Central Coast Hot Jazz Society) is a 401 (c) 3 non-profit organization. EIN 87-348832 BSR operates the Jazz Jubilee By The Sea.

The primary purposes of the society are: 

Preserving and promoting traditional jazz.

Providing a common meeting ground where traditional jazz musicians can play their music to interested audiences 

Providing a liaison between jazz musicians, jazz societies and the listening public. 

Providing young musicians of high school and college age with the opportunity to play along with older and more experienced musicians.

Jazz also allows me to work in a team/band, yet be myself as a performer. There is no other music that encompasses a diverse range, yet retains its own identity. Gary Ryan helped start the inaugural Dixieland Monterey Jazz Festival about thirty years ago, which headlined Louie Armstrong. In 2006 Ryan was named Dixieland Monterey Musician of the Year. He hasn’t been inducted into the National Four-String Hall of Fame at the American Banjo Museum in Oklahoma City yet, but he was invited to play for his friend John Becker of St. Louis when Becker was inducted. Some of his favorite gigs were playing with Bing Crosby for 13 years and playing with jazz violinist Joe Venuti. While Gary is an accomplished pianist, most have only seen him on banjo where he’s truly a virtuoso, both at playing and at engaging an audience and keeping them laughing. He’s also very generous, having given banjos to kids and been a mentor to musicians of all ages. We are very pleased to welcome Gary Ryan,

Friday 4:20 Skyroom with Creole Syncopators

Sunday 2:00 Skyroom with Creole Syncopators

Raised just outside of New York City, in New Jersey, Kris was lucky enough to be exposed to classical music, jazz, and traditional Hungarian music from his family as a young child. Kris completed his bachelor's degree at Berklee College of Music in Boston and made regular pilgrimages back to New York to study with bebop master, Barry Harris.

In 2011, Tokarski moved to New Orleans for graduate studies at the University of New Orleans. Shortly after moving to the "Cradle of Jazz" he embraced the early piano traditions of the city as well as those of the early New York and Chicago masters. A keen interest in the music of Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson; combined with his bebop roots allowed Tokarski to develop a voice of his own, deeply rooted in the jazz piano tradition.

Now in their 40th year, the Blue Street Jazz Band is a true force of musicality, integrity, stability, and professionalism in the performance of Dixieland Jazz. Founded in 1983 by trumpet player Forrest Hemlick and currently under the leadership of trombonist Dave Ruffner, the band has been one of the most innovative groups in traditional jazz. Original songs and creatively conceived arrangements have been their hallmark, along with the musical expertise displayed by each individual member. Although New Orleans jazz is the cornerstone on which the band was built, Blue Street is also known for their eclectic taste in music. In any given set, the audience is liable to hear various styles including swing, Mardi Gras, folk songs, marches, waltzes and gospel music.

Gator Nation, formerly Gator Beat, is a hardclapping, foot-stomping, high energy band that has been playing dances and festivals on the West Coast for over 20 years. With the same survival instinct as its namesake, Gator Nation continues to adapt itself to its audiences, always with something fresh yet true to its calling. That calling is to represent, with their own unique brand, the music of South Louisiana in all its forms: Cajun, Zydeco, and new Orleans style R & B. Most notable are their original creations, giving the band their reputation as unforgettable, a band with a beat that bites. The flavor is always spicy, like a good gumbo, and bound to please. As one of their albums is titled, the crowd is always left happy and hollering “Gimme Some Mo’!”

Groovus

Thursday 6:00 Vets’ Hall Plus

Sunday 5:00

The Holland & Coots "brand" continues to grow and evolve. The word GROOVUS! is actually derived from an early form of Latin - created long before the Indo-European folks got ahold of it and turned it into something decent - that, loosely translated means, "OOOO - that swings!" At least that's what Danny Coots tells us (apparently his Latin teacher, Mrs. Christopher, was quite the storyteller).

Jazz Aficionado, Michael Steinman, wrote in his liner notes on a recent album: "Brian, Steve, and Danny – heartfelt tumblers and jugglers – create MUSIC that makes us feel. We remember sunrises, cool water, grateful breathing, hugs. The Sages describe many routes to enlightenment, but their advice is really “Find your Groove and Groove with others who Understand.” GROOVUS is so wellnamed; this trio sends the right vibrations without ever frightening the new puppy. If there's one thing that can be said about the duo of Holland & Coots, it's that they're always looking to break new ground. Their most recent creation, Swingin' West, brings together all the best of 1930's Jazz and Western swing, Backed by the famous Groovus rhythm section, Swingin' West features Nashville legends Adam Till, (fiddle / vocals), Jeremy Wakefield (pedal steel guitar), and Andy Reiss (guitar).

As Danny wrote in the liner notes to their latest album, "Both jazz and Western swing styles grew up together, side-by-side, but left home long ago to pursue their own adventures. With this band, we bring them back together, returned home with all the nuances and character of a lifetime apart. They have a lot to talk about and a lot to share."

Ivory&Gold® is a flute and piano ensemble, born in 2001, celebrating the greatest examples of jazz, ragtime, Broadway, gospel, blues and hits from the Great American Songbook. Audiences are dazzled by Anne’s technique, awed by her tone, and enthralled with her timing when bantering with her talented, energetic, piano-playing husband, Jeff. Praised by the The LA Jazz Scene as a musical duo that can “draw out the beauty in the rich melodies and play the music...with taste and sensitivity.” This talented duo continues to thrill audiences with their musical talent, coupled with historical anecdotes and humor. A typical concert will feature a wide variety of styles from Ragtime to Swing, Blues to Broadway, and Folk to Gospel, coalescing into a presentation they’ve coined “Eclectic Americana.”

The Tevis Ranger Jazz Ensemble from Bakersfield California is a made up of a select group of 7th and 8th grade musicians from Tevis Junior High in the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District. Under the direction of BSR member Kelly Willey, the band proudly represents their school and district at many events including the Bakersfield Jazz Workshop, The Dos Pueblos Jazz Festival, Bakersfield College Jazz Day and various local service clubs.

The Tevis Rangers Jazz Ensemble made their debut as an intermission band for the Basin Street Regulars Sunday event in May 2015. This was the first time a junior high school band had ever appeared at a BSR event. The students were all in white shirts and vests, and they looked and performed professionally. The band put on an amazing show and the response from the crowd was overwhelming. Over the last several years many Tevis Rangers have attended the Teagarden Jazz Camp in Pollack Pines, funded by jazz scholarships from the Basin Street Regulars. They performed so well that they were also featured at the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Jazz Jubilee by the Sea.

Tom Rigney and Flambeau is a band that will tear the roof off of anyplace that has one, and raise the spirits of everyone around. Rigney, now entering his second decade at the helm of Flambeau, has stepped into the spotlight with a vengeance. Flambeau showcases his passionate, virtuoso fiddling, his commanding stage presence, his range, depth and originality as a composer, and of course, those notorious red boots. Flambeau specializes in fiery Cajun and Zydeco two-steps, heartbreakingly beautiful ballads, and waltzes. Their high energy show features tight ensemble playing, deeply infectious grooves, and spectacular solo work. Most of the repertoire is composed by Rigney, but they also mix in a few classics from the Cajun/ Zydeco/New Orleans songbook. And if along the way, you pick up a trace of Rigney’s Irish roots, or a little Swing and Rock and Roll, it just makes the musical gumbo that much tastier.

This trio, each member with stellar resumes, spends hours together and apart in a thoughtful quest to engage their audiences. They love the music; they love to laugh; they love to perform and have, each and together, performed worldwide. For private house concerts of thirty to amphitheaters that seat thousands, they are comfortable in their “musical skin and happy hats.” They leave you feeling as if they have delivered a special delivery package addressed only to you and then watched you unwrap it.

At age three singing before a congregation of 1,500 people on Easter Sunday, Yve Evans had no idea that performance was her destiny. However, the little girl grew up to be an outstanding Singer and Pianist.

There is an intangible quality in her music that gives it a life of its own; life that reaches out and touches the souls of the people that hear it. Yve Evans, Rick E. Taylor, Larry Washington are “a private party in a public place.”

Dawn Lambeth has the rare gift of making a difficult art look easy. Her sweet rhythmic singing makes audiences smile. Dawn likes to recognize the tune and sing the words so that listeners can enjoy them as much as she does. When she steps up to the microphone, she’s having a good time – one that she happily shares with us.

The songs she loves to sing might be familiar – but old songs seem new when she sings them and new ones become old friends. “These songs are like the stories I love – they’re beautifully constructed little gems.” She’s also a fine swinging pianist, so she doesn’t need a big band and a sequined gown to bring music to any party.

They play Hot Jazz and Blues from the 1920’s as well as some spirited music from Chicago’s South Side and early New Orleans. The band specializes in the less often heard tunes originally performed by artists such as King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Kid Ory, among others. Their music sounds just as alive and fresh today as it did during the Great Depression. This long-time line-up includes four of their original members, and it's been over a decade since any new members were added. Many of these musicians are recognized and well known throughout the West Coast for their many contributions to the local and international music scene.

California-native Kathryn Loomis is an accomplished jazz vocalist whose pure, soft, and warm voice matches her elegant singing style. Whether performing a melancholy torch song or a cheerful swing tune, Loomis’s classic approach and experience with the Great American Songbook makes her performances as timeless as the songs she sings. Her specialty is singing with jazz combos and big bands, including her combo Kathryn Loomis & Company. In addition to performing, Loomis is currently pursuing recording, virtual collaboration, and songwriting.

Loomis studied music at Cuesta College and received her Bachelor of Arts in Music at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Inspired by musical legends, like Ella Fitzgerald, Kathryn Loomis endeavors to tell a story with each song she sings. Kathryn conveys the nuanced emotions of vintage love songs with her natural stage presence and seemingly effortless musical intuition.

Shuttle Bus Information

Free shuttle bus transportation is available for all badge identified attendees, with four buses operating on Friday and Saturday and three buses on Sunday.

Shuttle buses will be parked at the Grover Beach Community Center, the Ramona Garden Park Center, the Blast and Brew Party Room, and the Pismo Beach Veterans’ Hall by 10:15 AM on Friday and 9:30 AM on Saturday and Sunday. The Skyroom at the Edgewater will be serviced by the Veteran’s Hall bus.

We recommend that attendees drive to the three venues with the largest parking lots: the Pismo Vets’ Hall, The Grover Beach Community Center or the Ramona Garden Park Facility for event parking. Auxiliary parking will be available at an additional lot near the Grover Beach Community Center. See your program map to guide you to the venue locations. Parking is available at the Blast and Brew Party room but can be impacted by the restaurant operations upstairs. Parking at the fifth venue, the Edgewater Hotel, is also limited due to its proximity to the beach, weather dependent.

On Saturday night only, the Veteran’s Hall/ Edgewater bus will be able to drop you off at Puffer’s of Pismo for their special Saturday night Jubilee show and will pick you up after the show.

Feel free to drive to your first-choice event venue. Or drive to any venue location and, after parking, board one of the four buses departing in a route for all other venues by approximately 10:15 AM on Friday and 9:30 AM on Saturday and Sunday. You can park at any venue and get to your first venue choice in time to hear great jazz music by the start of the first set!

Morning hotel pick-ups will not be routinely offered this year without prior arrangements. We are trying to make the best use of our limited resources. In any case, all Jubilee buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts. Reservations for hotel pick-ups for special needs attendees or those without other ground transportation must be made with a pre-arranged phone call. These pick-ups should be within the perimeter of the festival venues (Pismo Beach and Grover Beach). If you wish to travel outside the festival area, a taxi, Uber, or Lyft would be more appropriate, unless you have special needs.

If you know that you will need a hotel or campground pick-up upon, please feel free to make arrangements now by calling (805) 878-3616. You may also make arrangements during the festival by calling the above number between 7:30-8:00 AM on Friday and Saturday. If a hotel pick-up is needed on Sunday, arrangements must be made by 5:00 PM Saturday night. Timing for hotel pick-ups will be established during the phone conversation.

After each set is over just board a shuttle bus to change venues. Each bus will leave within ten minutes after the music ends, unless the bus fills up sooner. In that case the bus will depart and you can board the next arriving bus, which will arrive in just a few minutes. All buses will rotate clockwise around the venue circuit.

Bus stop locations are marked with signs at each music venue.

Three shuttle buses will be available on Sunday, with one bus continuing to be shared between the Veterans’ Hall and the Edgewater and one bus shared between the Grover Beach Community Center and the Ramona Garden Park Center. Attendees waiting for a bus at the Ramona Garden Park Center on Sunday will just have a minute or two longer wait for the bus arrival.

Pismo Beach is a tourist destination and traffic can be congested. Our shuttle buses may get you to a venue faster than you can drive and park your own car, with less stress, and drop you off closest to the entrance door to each venue! Enjoy the ride!

Shuttle bus questions? Call (805) 878-3616 during the festival. Please note: It is approximately 3 miles from the Pismo venues to the Grover Beach venues, all on surface streets.
