The Oases of

Western Queens Story Meg Cotner

One of the nicest parts about living in this western swath of Queens is the proximity to the waterfront parks on the East River shore. There are a total of six in Astoria and Long Island City: Ralph Demarco Park, Astoria Park, Socrates Sculpture Park, Rainey Park, Queensbridge Park, and Gantry Plaza State Park. Each park has a unique character, but all provide a place to hang out, relax, and spend time near the water.

Hell Gate Bridge as seen from Astoria Park

Ralph Demarco Park

This is the northernmost of the waterfront parks, named after community leader Ralph Demarco, who felt a park like this would improve the lives of all Astorians. Some think it’s just an extension of neighboring Astoria Park, but it’s a park in its own right, lining the shoreline between Ditmars and 20th Avenue. It provides a beautiful walk along the waterfront on a mixed-use bike/pedestrian lane leading eventually to a seating area with trees and views of the water. Shore Blvd. between Ditmars Blvd. and 20th Avenue

Astoria Park

The largest of the waterfront parks, Astoria Park is one of the most popular destinations in the neighborhood. It has a Great Lawn, tree-lined walking paths, the largest WPA-era pool in NYC, an all-weather track and a modern skate park. It is 6 | BOROMAG.COM | JULY 2013

River Greenway, baseball fields, handball courts, a picnic area and more. The seawall is currently under reconstruction, too. The views of the bridge are pretty cool, and the park is a peaceful place in the neighborhood. Vernon Blvd. between the Queensboro Bridge and 40th Avenue

Gantry Plaza State Park

This is the biggest park in LIC, spanning 12 acres along the waterfront with views of the UN and Empire State building. The iconic Pepsi Cola sign gleams at the north end, and the park has also served as a location for film and television productions. Gantry Park has something for everyone – a waterfront boardwalk, playgrounds for kids, built-in lounge chairs and hammocks, shady trees, manicured gardens and piers. You’ll even see people here fishing in the East River.

home to the footprint of two bridges, the Triborough/RFK and Hell Gate. Summertime brings a film series, fireworks show and concerts. The old diving pool will transform into a performance venue, so watch for that.

Socrates Sculpture Park

This beautiful park used to be a dump – literally. In 1985, artist Mark di Suvero led the community to restore the site, eventually turning it into what it is today - a green space in which to display large scale art works. Also, it’s located near the confluence of the Harlem and East Rivers. The park hosts a Saturday greenmarket ( June-November), international outdoor summer cinema series, free yoga and pilates classes and stunning Manhattan views. Vernon Blvd. between Broadway and 30th Drive

Rainey Park

This green oasis was once called “one of the prettiest parks in the system” by a former Parks commissioner. It has rolling lawns, lots of trees, lovely views and a seriously awesome modern playground. The design was inspired by the Japanese artist Isamu Noguchi, whose studio (now the Noguchi Museum) is around the corner. The Queens East River Greenway goes right through it, too. It was named after Dr. Thomas Rainey, who believed in building a bridge between LIC and Manhattan. Vernon Blvd. between 34th Avenue and 33rd Road

Queensbridge Park

This park is named after the Queensboro Bridge, the bridge the aforementioned Dr. Rainey pressed for, which defines the park’s southern end. Park views look onto neighboring Roosevelt Island’s green space. Queensbridge Park is home to a leg of the Queens East

bakery

On Sunday, June 30th, the Astor Bake Shop celebrated its third birthday with its third annual Pie Eating Contest, sponsored by DeZaan Gourmet chocolates. Contestants in three divisions (men, women & juniors) competed to be the quickest to devour an entire 1½-pound chocolate cream pie using only their mouths. Lawyer Maria Tihin took the women’s title with a time of 7:36. Rodrigo Serna, Jr.—an IT bank technician—took not only his category, but the grand prize, with a winning time of 6:13 minutes. Raul Gonzalez won the junior category by default, with no other competitors registered, allowing him to take home the pie to enjoy at his leisure. The winners received crystal trophies and $50 gift cards, with each participant taking home a medal and an ABS T-shirt.

George McKirdy, whose resume includes TriBeCa Grill, Butter, Nobu and Café Boulud. While his gourmet desserts elevate cakes, pies and tarts to some of the most exquisite and delicious around (famous treats include the Ast-Oreos, macarons, and Christmas yule logs), guests have also come to love the selection of savory dishes, sandwiches, brunch entrees, and especially the Astor Burger—one of the most heralded burgers in the neighborhood, best accompanied by a side of herbed French fries and a glass of homemade salted lemonade. Astor Bake Shop | 12-23 Astoria Blvd, Astoria | (718) 606-8439 | astor-bakeshop.com

The gluttonous games were emceed by Chocolatina, drag queen, pastry chef, and author of children’s book, “Tina Cocolina: Queen of the Cupcakes”. The bake shop was bursting with spectators, who were treated to complimentary mini chocolate cream pies and the music of the Queens-based instrumental trio, the Lucky Tones. explore your boro Wouldn’t it be a perfect summer day in New York City if there were a single destination where a family or group of friends could laugh in the wind on a ferry ride that docks at the most exciting piers in the city, hop aboard a free air-conditioned shuttle to visit an outdoor market where they could savor brunch in the open air, do some weekend shopping, grab an icy dish of sorbet or handshaken lemonade with fresh berries and mint, take an afternoon river kayaking trip, create art in an outdoor sculpture garden, share an artisan pizza or devour sliders from an old-fashioned barbecue smoker, take a stroll through the park, and pose for photos under an iconic billboard overlooking the NYC skyline—all of that within just a tenminute walking radius? For decades, Long Island City has been an epicenter of the arts, waterfront parks, and unique cuisine, but

16 | BOROMAG.COM | JULY 2013

now the LIC Flea & Food offers a common gathering place ideal for combining each of the elements that make this neighborhood one of the most vibrant in the city. The best part is you can easily do it all without breaking the bank. As a partner with LIC Flea & Food, the East River Ferry—which recently celebrated its second year of service on June 25th—offers visitors transportation from Midtown, Wall Street, Williamsburg, Dumbo, Greenpoint, and Governors Island, all arriving in Long Island City every half hour. Single rides are $4, or just an extra dollar to bring along a bicycle. They even offer hop-on-hop-off passes for just a few bucks more. Schedules and maps are available at www.eastriverferry. com, and there’s even a smart phone app called NY Waterway.

From the ferry terminal, a complimentary air conditioned shuttle transports visitors directly to LIC Flea & International Food Bazaar at 5-25 46th St, where families can engage in art activities, enjoy local musicians and DJs, nosh on artisan treats and shop for collectibles, artwork, home furnishings, fashion and antiques from a rotating selection of over 90 vendors featured each weekend from 10a.m. to 6p.m. And when the heat grows too sweltering and a jump in the river suddenly seems enticing, head to the north end of the market where free kayaking is available throughout the summer via the volunteer-based LIC Boathouse. Just down the street at 31st Ave and Vernon Blvd, free paddling will be available this month on July 3 (6PM), 13 (1PM), 14 (1PM), 17 (6PM), 28 (1PM), & 31 (6PM). Check out the full summer schedule at www.licboathouse.org.

Following an afternoon on the East River, refuel and recharge at the market on wood-fired Neapolitan pizza from Manducatis Rustica, a 12hour smoked brisket sandwich from Butcher Bar or a scoop of cucumber melon sorbet from local favorite, Malu. For a formal indoor dinner, Vernon Boulevard is just a block away, where old time Main Street U.S.A. magically collides with Long Island City’s sparkling contemporary waterfront, framed by Gantry Plaza just down the street. It boasts pristine piers, lounging chairs, weeping willows, playgrounds, and the glowing iconic Pepsi billboard, just one of hundreds of picturesque vantage points for views of the Manhattan skyline. Also nearby are Socrates Sculpture Park with an outdoor green market and free yoga classes (www.socratessculpturepark. org), one of the country’s oldest and largest collections of contemporary and experimental art at MoMA P.S. 1 (www. momaps1.org), or the showcase of the artwork of renowned Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi at the Noguchi museum (www.noguchi.org). Long Island City is also rich with theater, improv, comedy, music, restaurants, lounges, dog parks, galleries, studios and hidden treasures tucked between an uncanny marriage of the New York City of yesterday and the waterfront cultural center of tomorrow. With LIC Flea & International Food Bazaar as a crossroads, come for the market, and return weekly over the summer to discover miniature escapes from the workweek, all eclectically packaged in one of New York’s most vibrant neighborhoods.

LIC Flea & Food | 5-25 46th Ave, Long Island City | weekends from 10 – 6 all summer | www.licflea.com JULY 2013 | BOROMAG.COM | 17

BODY & SOUL

Shall we yoga at the river? Story HAYLEY BRIDGEWATER

Find yourself shopping at a green market, street fair or the LIC Flea to get outside this summer? Maybe hosting a cookout, picnic or stoop hang? Perhaps concerts and films on a lawn or a lazy beach day is more your style? Whatever it may be, the sunny days and breezy evenings of July find us desperate for adventure beyond four walls. This feeling carries over into our fitness routines as well, if the increase in runners, cyclists, skaters and kayakers is any indication. For me, I can think of no better communion than outdoor yoga. And I am not alone. Here is a roundup of just a few of the locations to experience the vibrant and active outdoor yoga presence in Western Queens, harmonizing mind, body, and nature in perfect balance.

SOCRATES SCULPTURE PARK Located at 32-05 Vernon Blvd (at the intersection of Broadway and Vernon Blvd.) in Long Island City, this waterfront park has a long history of hosting outdoor yoga practice. Nestled amongst beautiful trees and inspiring works of art, classes are led by certified Kripalu instructor Monique Schubert and (for the month of July) a team of guest instructors. Kripalu Yoga is a system of Hatha Yoga that integrates body postures, breathing techniques, relaxation and meditation. Classes are free and suitable for all experience levels. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat or a towel. Yoga is offered every Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting, May 11-September 29, 2013. Saturdays: 9:30 - 10:30 am & 11:00am-12:00pm Sundays: 10:00- 11:00am

Hallets Point

This property is the one to watch: Hallets Point, currently home to the NYCHA Astoria Houses on the Astoria waterfront, gained approval this month for a plan to bring 11 buildings to the area. The plan proposed by Lincoln Equities Group would add retail space, parkland, and thousands of residential apartments to the vicinity. The developer must now apply for zoning changes and seek approval from other government agencies in order to continue with the plans. Once approved, construction could begin in late 2014 or early 2015. According to Lincoln Equities development director Robert Schenkel, the Hallets Point development would improve the area and the community by introducing 2,000 apartments (20 percent of which would be affordable housing), an affordable supermarket, a place for a public elementary school, and a landscaped waterfront path. one hot second Story ELANNA WHITE | PHOTOS ANGEL JUSAY and OHS

One Hot Second. Is it an increment of time? A snappy term of speech? Or perhaps a cautious warning? Many of us use it to specify the amount of time we want to use, or to stifle the pestering of a significant other, but in this case, One Hot Second refers to a band— ‘The Laziest Band in Show Business,’ in fact—and I recently was able to have one hot second with this Astoria-based trio that croons outrageous parody music throughout local venues.

EW: That’s some pretty profound advice to live by. How did you guys come up with your name? Does it mean anything secret? C-Fate: We had a lot of potential band names. It’s a hobby of mine to come up with band names, so I kind of sat around and came up with a list. Run On Sentence was close. I guess you could think that the meaning behind it is that if there’s one hot second where the audience and the band are one, then it’s worth it. That would be synergy.

EW: So let’s start with a little bit about you guys. How did you meet/form One Hot Second? C-Fate: We consist of myself, M-Squared and P-Verse. I cast myself in the “obnoxious lead singer” part and these guys are the “actual musicians.” M-Squared and I met nine years ago here in Astoria and six and a half years ago we started playing together for fun. M2: We were terrible. We needed someone to balance us out. C-Fate: When we added P-Verse, everything clicked. P-Verse: High five if you like hot sauce! M2: We wanted to make sure we knew exactly what equipment we would have wherever we were playing so keeping it to two acoustic guitars and a singer made that easy.

EW: I like that! So why Astoria? C-Fate: Both M-Squared and I live in Astoria. I’ve been here for 15 ½ years and M-Squared 9, so it just made sense. Astoria is where the magic happened. It’s a mixture of us loving it and just being too lazy to perform anywhere else. M2: We have a lot of latitude and real estate here because we’re amongst friends who support us and understand the humor of our music and performances. One of the things that we’ve struggled with over the years is the thought that if we left Astoria, people might not understand that it’s a joke.

EW: How did you guys realize that you wanted to do parody music? C-Fate: None of us are really serious people. Our performances definitely make light of people who take themselves too seriously. We would just kind of hang out and drink and then someone would start playing and improv-ing and that’s how it evolved. The process has pretty much stayed the same. M2: Our problem is never going further, it’s knowing when to stop. C-Fate: Definitely. P-Verse: My personal advice to aspiring musicians is practice, practice, practice. We could’ve avoided a lot by doing that.

36 | BOROMAG.COM | JULY 2013

EW: Interesting. So where in Astoria do you play? C-Fate: We play mostly at Crescent Lounge. It’s great because our performances there are close and small. We usually play once every few months. We started out as the house band for their open mic night but then, over time, we ended up being the only band who would show up so our sets needed to get longer, new material needed to be written. M2: Now we have enough material to pick and choose. C-Fate: We try to play a new song every time we perform but people do have their favorites. M2: People always ask for Brownsville and Toxic. P-Verse: I haven’t actually attended one of our shows but I hear they can be a good time. (continued on page 38)

NIGHTLIFE & ENTERTAINMENT (continued from page 36) EW: Speaking of your shows, I’ve read that you really consider yourself a live band -- that if people don’t attend one of your shows, they don’t really get the full experience. What is that full experience and what do you like audiences to take away from your shows? C-Fate: Well, we’re a lot like KISS in that respect. M2: Yes, we look a lot different without our make-up. C-Fate: And we’re a lot more Jewish off stage. M2: But really, we take a lot of time to work out an arc to our shows. We like to lead one song into another. We like to create shows that have a clear beginning, middle and end. C-Fate: Our seasonal shows are our most popular, and they allow us to have fun playing around with themes. We all have theater backgrounds so that plays a big part in shaping out shows. I also spent a lot of time growing up listening to concept albums so that’s definitely been an influence. M2: We don’t try to take you on a journey though. C-Fate: [laughs] Right. We’re not Queensryche... yet. P-Verse: In many ways, we’re like William Shakespeare. We write about the occult, are chock full of innuendos, perform under a pseudonym and absolutely adore guitar hero. EW: Sounds good! So who are some of your influences? P-Verse: Our inspiration comes for everywhere: the pole-hugging woman shouting obscenities on the subway, undercooked chicken nuggets, post-Chilean children’s author Joaquin Dorfman. C-Fate: Musician-wise, there’s a broad spectrum of people. Journey, Tenacious D, Hall and Oates, The Smiths… M2: We were definitely alternative fans during the late 80’s to early 90’s. EW: Cool. So do you guys have a favorite song of yours to play? M2: They’re all like our children. C-Fate: They’re all our hairy, ugly, overweight children. It’s hard, the fans have their favorites. We like making people laugh but sometimes we make ourselves laugh a bit too much. M2: We have not been able to get through songs on stage before. C-Fate: If we think it’s funny, it gets a pass. We have a filter, it’s just skewed sometimes. 38 | BOROMAG.COM | JULY 2013

EW: What’s one of craziest performance experiences you guys have had? C-Fate: Bongo guy! This dude showed up one night with bongos and played with us the entire show. It was nuts. He was actually really good! M2: It’s kind of like explaining a magical fairy that came into our life. C-Fate: He baballooed us. M2: He definitely baballooed us. C-Fate: Other shows that are fun to play are when we perform songs that you really should not do without drums. We once did The Final Countdown with a chorus of kazoos. We also did a Halloween show where we played as “5 Mediocre Minutes,” a One Hot Second cover band. EW: Sounds fun! So what’s next on the horizonw for you guys? C-Fate: We’re just writing and coming up with new ideas and hoping to schedule a show at SingleCut Beersmiths. M2: Yeah, this is what we do and we do it good enough for us. C-Fate: Definitely. I think that this year is the year that we go from obscurity to near obscurity. EW: Any final words? OHS: Sorry ladies, we are all taken. Their next show will be at Crescent Lounge on July 24th at 7:30pm (32-05 Crescent St, Astoria) facebook: https://www.facebook.com/onehotsecond twitter: @onehottweet site: http://onehotsecondband.com/
