ur fellow Astorians are embracing the fall, wearing earthy tones and warming up with cardigans, jackets and trenchcoats. Prints are starting to fade away for the season; locals favored solid hues like wine, hunter green and pumpkin orange this month. Several stylish residents were sporting colorful sneakers — a fashionable yet practical choice while walking around the city.

For fans of Sac’s Place, an Italian restaurant that’s been a cornerstone of the Astoria community for 30 years, it was a long summer. Earlier this year, the neighborhood was abuzz with the news that the beloved restaurant was closing its Broadway location in June. But the sad news quickly turned into anticipation as Sac’s prepped to reopen at its new spot.

ow, the wait is over: In mid-September, Sac’s Place held its grand opening at its brand-new 35th Avenue home at the historic Kaufman Astoria Studios on 35th Avenue. The location previously housed landmark restaurant George’s (formerly Astor Room), and in its past life, the venue served Hollywood royalty like silent film star Rudolph Valentino. At the new location, owners and brothers Domenico and Anthony Sacramone will continue to serve authentic Italian food from their family’s recipes that date as far back as the 1850s. It seems only fitting that the Sacramone brothers found a new home in the Kaufman building — a New York City historical landmark — as Sac’s Place has
its own place in Astoria history. Plus, Domenico and Anthony grew up just two blocks away from where they would later open the first Sac’s Place on Broadway and 29th Street. At the time, Domenico was still in college and working at an internship, and his brother Anthony was working at a bank. They realized that careers in the corporate world might not be for them in the long run, so they decided to try something different. The brothers’ love of food and wine — as well as the warm atmosphere of the Italian family they grew up in — inspired them to try their hand in the restaurant business, where they could share good food and happy times with others. “To me, it was just going to be a stepping stone to something else,” Domenico said. “But then I liked it; we liked meeting and hanging out with new people.” Sac’s started as a small corner location before they eventually bought the space next door and expanded. They also opened a second location in Jackson Heights to spread more of their delicious recipes throughout Queens. But when their landlord for their flagship restaurant

FOOD + DRINK passed away in 2016, the building was sold to a new landlord and the environment just didn’t feel the same for the brothers. It was time to begin searching for a new place to call home. The brothers knew they wanted to stay in Astoria, but they weren’t sure where. It was a conversation over lunch at Sac’s between Domenico’s wife and an employee from Kaufman that got the ball rolling toward the new spot. “[The Kaufman employee] made a comment on how consistently good Sac’s has been,” Domenico said. “And my wife said, ‘Well, I hope you enjoy it, because it might be your last meal here.'” Shortly

after, the Sacramone brothers began conversations with Kaufman Studios regarding plans to take over George’s. The old location was significant to the brothers as it was so close to their childhood home, but the new spot has its perks, too: “[W]e’re in the middle of this area that Kaufman Arts have built and we can expand with our older customers as well as the newer ones,” Domenico said. “I really feel we’re in the middle of a developing hub on 35th Avenue and we’re really happy this became a new home.” The location may be new, but the signature ingredients that Sac’s is known

for have remained the same. Sac’s menu is full of high-end, quality ingredients and packed with family heritage — after all, the brothers learned everything they know about great food from their mother’s recipes. “It’s always been farm to table; we just didn’t know how to promote it [in the past],” Domenico said. “My parents used to grow the spices when we were growing up, and then we made an affiliation with a neighborhood farm in Pennsylvania called Heckman Orchards and we get everything from them.” With carefully made dishes and top ingredients, it’s difficult for customers to pick a favorite dish; customers love their pizza, but patrons should definitely not skip out on their homemade pastas, like their ravioli and manicotti, as well as their gnocchi made in a delightfully fresh and delicious four-cheese sauce. The chicken Napolitano, made with mozzarella and eggplant in a white wine sauce, is also popular. At a place like Sac’s, every dish is worth a try and it's easy to see and taste the intricate care placed in the creation of each dish. “The one thing we’re most proud of is that people who have been coming to us for 30 years say what they love most is that what they had 30 years ago still tastes the same today,” Domenico said, “and I think that’s the highest compliment we can get.”

fter setbacks in renovation and construction stemming from dealing with an older building, the wait is over: Rivercrest held its long-anticipated opening at the beginning of October. It’s an all-in-one bar where locals can see sports games or enjoy movie nights while indulging in cocktails, beer and tasty dishes made with the eclectic Astoria neighborhood in mind. The space has a vintage vibe and plenty of fun artwork, and it even includes a speakeasystyle bar to encompass all of Astoria’s interesting and quirky history. The four owners, Mark Whelan, Martin Whelan, Shane Chrystal and Ciara O’Sullivan, sought to create a fun atmosphere for patrons to gather for sports games or get-togethers — or just to escape for a bit and unwind. Rivercrest’s owners are certainly experts in giving customers what they want; brothers Martin and Mark Whelan are the owners of 11 bars, mostly located in Manhattan, such as Maggie’s Place, Stout and One Mile House. That’s where the Whelans met O’Sullivan and Chrystal, who worked at these spots in roles ranging from bartender to manager over the course of about 15 years. Over time, the four of them became good friends, so when the Whelans had an idea to open a new location

in Queens, taking their great employees and friends along with them was the obvious choice. O'Sullivan and Chrystal are first-time business owners themselves but bring their extensive restaurant experience to the table. “We wanted the neighborhood to have one bar that you can go to that you can get a really good cocktail, watch a sports game, and try any number of the dishes that we have, and just a fun, laid-back atmosphere and a good time,” O’Sullivan said. The bar is named after an interesting piece of Astoria history — the River Crest Sanitarium, which was located on Ditmars Boulevard and 26th Street from 1896 to 1962, when it was demol-
ished. The ramp and gatepost that led to the sanitarium’s rear entrance still exist today on 26th Street, but the ramp now leads to a fenced-off dead end as the land is currently home to St. John’s Preparatory. The sanitarium tended to those with chronic and mental illnesses, but celebrities of the era and people of affluent backgrounds often went to River Crest as a retreat because of the lavish property and sprawling landscape. The bar pays homage to this interesting piece of history with artwork, like a glamorous woman with electroshock wires adorned on her head, and a bathroom that features a large vintage advertisement for the sanitarium across the wall above the sinks.

that are already big hits are the “hard to stay sober,” made with Tito’s grapefruit, rosemary syrup and soda, and the “Fire of 1901,” which consists of Viva tequila, jalapeno, pineapple, fresh lime, smoked chili bitters and coconut water. They also have cocktails on tap, like their seasonal red sangria and the classic old-fashioned. Fun events are in the works, such as movie night, which will consist of a feature film and a special menu option that complements the evening’s entertainment. Right now, the neighborhood is becoming familiar with the area’s newest addition, with passersby stopping in to experiment with what the bar has to offer. According to the owners, it seems like locals agree that it was worth the wait; Rivercrest has been brimming with customers so far. “It’s funny because we weren’t expecting it to be so crazy right off the bat,” O’Sullivan said. “But as soon as we opened the doors, it’s been full. We basically doubled staff from what we originally thought we would need, so it’s been great.”

Rivercrest’s food menu pays homage to the Astoria melting pot with eclectic and fun dishes like street tacos filled with everything from Greek chicken to Baja fish, which have been extremely popular since the bar opened. Burgers like the Rivercrest Standard have been a big hit with customers. Another tasty choice is the harvest grain bowl, which consists of ingredients like toasted farro and barley, chickpeas, pomegranate, roasted sweet potato and feta with tzatziki sauce. A brunch menu is coming soon. The owners try to source their ingredients locally and make everything in house. “We source as locally as possible,” O’Sullivan said. “We want to try to stay within the community; some things you obviously have to source from elsewhere, but our hot sauces are from Hellgate — it’s an Astoria brand. Same with beer as well. A majority of the beer [options on the menu] are from New York, but some that aren’t local are so good that we put them on.” The bar’s menu features quite a list of craft beers and cocktails. Pretty in Paper Long Island City resident is a second-time finalist in annual toilet paper wedding dress contest

When you see Lindsay Hinz’s brilliantly white wedding gown with layers upon layers of ruffles, accessorized with an intricate fishnet headpiece and a bouquet that resembles a single rose, it’s quite hard to believe that she made it all using only toilet paper. “It took me two and a half months to make,” she said. “And that was pretty much every day after work from like six o’clock until midnight, and then sometimes a few hours before work in the morning and then every weekend.” Hinz, a Broadway costume technician who’s worked on productions like “Hamilton,” was one of the top 12 finalists out of 1,500 entries at this year’s 15th Annual Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest, presented by Charm Weddings and Quilted Northern. Her dress, along with the other finalists’ gowns, were featured in a nationally televised fashion show event on Sept. 30. “I didn’t place but it was a really, really cool experience to be recognized for my work and to have it showcased throughout the country,” Hinz said.

But this wasn’t the first time the Long Island City resident participated in the competition. She first entered the contest — which has a grand prize of $10,000 — two years ago after seeing an article about it in a Facebook group called Costume People. “I looked at the pictures and I was like, ‘Oh that’s really cool. I could do that,’” Hinz said.
She then admitted that although she had a fun time back then and even made it to the top 10, it ended up being a lot of work so she decided to skip out on the following year’s contest. “But then, when I found out that they were going to make a TV show and that it was going to be a much bigger deal this year, I decided to give it one more try,” she said.
Hinz explained that as a Broadway costume technician, her job entails putting together costumes that were already designed by other team members. As a seamstress by trade who studied at the University of Virginia, this comes more naturally to her than designing something from scratch — but she thinks it’s also “fun to have creative freedom.” “One thing that I love about the contest is you have the freedom to make your own choices,” she said. And that she did. As a self-proclaimed “movie buff,” she took inspiration from a wedding dress that appeared in a popular movie franchise. “I was like, ‘OK, what wedding dresses do I remember from movies that [have] really stuck with me?’” Hinz said. “And one that I really thought of was Katniss Everdeen’s wedding dress in ‘Hunger Games.’” She used 56 rolls of Quilted Northern Ultra Soft and Strong, and spent about 100 hours creating the ruffles in the skirt portion alone. “I essentially created fabric out of toilet paper, so it’s like rolling toilet paper out and stitching it together one panel at a time and creating yardage of fabric and then I can make a dress the way that I know how to make a dress,” Hinz said. Hinz, who lives with her boyfriend in what she says is a “really tiny apartment” in Long Island City, said that different pieces of the dress were stored in several places throughout their home in the months leading up to the fashion show. “The skirt is absolutely ginormous and so it basically took up one of the rooms in our apartment,” she said, laughing. Although she didn’t win the contest this year either, she has fond memories of creating her toilet paper dresses. Hinz reminisced about the time she walked to Astoria Park, where she took pictures to submit to the contest, wearing the first toilet paper dress she ever created. “I had people like on the sidewalk yelling, ‘Congratulations!’ And there was a bus full of children on their way to school being like, ‘Oh my God, look at her dress!’ she laughed. “And no one knew that it’s toilet paper!” This year was no different, when she went to a friend’s apartment lobby to take the photos of her new creation. Hinz said, “I was there, posing for pictures, and people were leaving their apartments being like, ‘Oh my God, that’s incredible. Congratulations!’”

New Astoria wellness studio brings yoga, fitness and meditation under one roof BY EMILY DAVENPORT
A
new yoga studio that just opened for business in Astoria takes a holistic approach to healing a person’s mind, body and spirit. Breathe Strength Yoga & Wellness, located at 31-16 36th Ave., officially opened to the public on Oct. 7, offering classes in yoga, fitness and mediation at all levels led by a team of 16 teachers, including owner Charlotte Muller. For eight years, Muller taught fitness classes as her “side hustle,” running fitness classes in gyms and other public spaces wherever she could during and after college. Muller quickly found that this wasn’t a particularly stable way to make a living and was working in human resources after graduation to make ends meet. “I always had an idea to open my own studio, but the thought was always along the lines of, ‘Oh, I’ll do it when I’m married’ or ‘I’ll do it when I’m more financially stable,’” Muller said. “I tried to do it out of college but it didn’t work. But it was always on my mind because I wasn’t happy in the corporate world.” Muller ultimately took the plunge, quitting her job in the corporate sector and eventually finding Breathe Strength’s Astoria studio space in February 2019. “Once I stepped inside the studio, I felt, ‘Yup, this is it,’” said Muller. “I knew that it was meant to be.” If you were to tell Muller years ago that she’d be running her own yoga and fitness studio, she’d probably think you were crazy. “I was not athletic,” Muller said, laughing. “I hated going to the gym and gym class at school.” It wasn’t until Muller was faced with the death of her mother that a switch flipped inside her and started her fitness journey from the ground up. “When I was 17, I lost my mom unexpectedly,” Muller said. “I got tested and found out that I had a genetic disorder that gives me high cholesterol. I had to change my life

completely, and about a month into it I had a complete change of heart.” Muller made a complete turnaround, not only incorporating exercise into her routine but gaining her certifications to teach Zumba, high-intensity interval training and yoga, and building the Breathe Strength brand while she was in college. “The company was originally called ‘Conquering Cholesterol,’ but the more I wrote that down, it didn’t feel right,” said Muller. “I started writing down words that felt beautiful to me and tried pairing them, and landed on 'Breathe Strength.' Now my studio is Breathe Strength: 'breathe' for yoga, and 'strength' for fitness.” While the Breathe Strength studio didn’t officially open until Oct. 7, Muller and her staff had been teaching community yoga classes in the space while it underwent construction. The classes, which take place on Monday afternoons at 3:45, helped Breathe Strength build its following well before it opened to the public. “Construction took about three or four months, but the space was still usable for yoga,” Muller said. “I offered six or seven community yoga classes a week, which were completely donation-based, and after two months, we had 100 people who had either taken a class or [were] in our contacts for future classes.” Now that it’s open, Breathe Strength currently offers classes in yoga and fitness — including but not limited to vinyasa yoga, yoga sculpt and high-intensity interval training — and they are also working to add meditation into the mix. Every third Friday of the month, Breathe Strength will host a Meditation 101 class, taught by Tawn Le, that aims to teach everyone the ins and outs of meditation while cracking the mystery of why it’s so hard to meditate. Meditation 101 will cost $10 per person. Breathe Strength also hosts a weekly community meditation every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m., also led by Le, which is run completely off of donations. In fact, Muller made sure that classes are affordable. “We’re not in it for the money,” Muller said. “That’s why it was important for us to have donation-based community classes on top of our regular classes.” For more information about Breathe Strength, visit breathestrengthwellness.com.

Meze, Cypriot-style tasting menus, are another specialty at Zenon Taverna. Customers can choose to sample from meat, fish or vegetarian options to get a broad feel for the menu. Multiple daily specials are available, and most days include vegetarian and glutenfree options. Starting Nov. 12, the restaurant will add a new special every Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. where kids eat for one dollar with purchase of an adult meal. Zenon Taverna also partnered with Allergic to Salad, a group that offers Master Chef classes to children in partnership with local restaurants, on Nov. 5. “We’re going to teach a class and make a Cypriot specialty, and then for a week we’re going to sell that specialty in house,” Ioannidis said before the event. “All the proceeds will go to the school.” For customers who want to bring Zenon Taverna home with them, delivery, to go, and catering options are all available. “Our delivery area just increased to encompass a larger area of Astoria,” Ioannidis said. Catering from Zenon Taverna is also popular throughout the tri-state area. “In Philadelphia they had a singer from Cyprus [perform], and an organization … there wanted authentic Cypriot food so they contacted us,” Ioannidis said. “We went out there and brought our food.” Larger parties also have the option to hold their events in a second-floor banquet room that can accommodate up to 75 people for birthdays, weddings and other events, complete with bathrooms and bar service. For parties of less than 25, there is a minimum spending amount required.

enon Taverna has long been a staple for local residents, offering authentic Greek and Cypriot cuisine in the Astoria community for the past 31 years. Trained chef Stelios Papageorgiou left Cyprus and worked three jobs until he could open his own restaurant in 1988 — the same 31st Avenue location where Zenon Taverna still stands today. His son-in-law, Harry Ioannidis, now owns and operates the fullservice restaurant. “The neighborhood has changed, new families coming in, but all the old Greeks still come back to get their food,” Ioannidis said. Part of what sets the restaurant apart from the other neighborhood Greek spots is its incorporation of Cypriot food and culture into the menu and dining experience. Chefs use unique spices for dishes and a special preparation process of their loukaniko (sausage). “Our sausage is Cypriot style, which is soaked in red wine for about seven to 10 days before it’s made so it has a very different flavor than some of the Greek ones you’ll find out there,” Ioannidis said. Nearly all dishes, from butchered meats to dips, are made in house and made to order. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options are also available, and they are designated on the menu with symbols. Ioannidis explained that Zenon Taverna recognizes the Cypriot and Greek belief that meals should be a social experience. “Food’s supposed to be about being social so you get together with family, you sit down, you have a meal, you enjoy it, but it’s also about being in that moment with them as well,” Ioannidis said.

But with winter ahead, it’s time to discover indoor activities that let kids exercise, learn and create — and give parents a well-deserved break. After being cooped up in a classroom all day, most kids yearn to get their creative juices flowing and engage in physical activity — at least that’s how I felt as a child. What I really wish I had growing up was Okabaloo FunArtFaktory in Astoria. They promote a mixture of visual arts with creative movement, acting and theater, STEAM activities, music and singing, storytelling and “free play,” just to name a few. “We were always looking for a place like Okabaloo for our own kids, a place that values the arts and creativity, and provides quality over quantity. When we couldn't find it we created it,” Okabaloo founder Olta Dokle said. Dokle co-founded the creative space in November 2017 with her sister Bora, who is a multitalented musician and vocalist — she was even in a European pop band. While Bora brought her passion for music, while Dokle offered her love of the visual arts and experience in business law and development. The dynamic duo grew up in a family of artists and dreamed of a place like Okabaloo for years before they opened its doors. “[What] makes Okabaloo memorable to those who have joined our programs and activities is when kids don't ever want to leave and give a very

Zheng and Yang used these personal experience to design Kanga’s in LIC. They committed to providing seating and a cafe area, a toddler and baby area, a jungle gym structure with slides running inside as well as a rock climbing wall, bounce house and merry-go-round ride for kids of all ages. “We hope our customers will enjoy quality family time after they come to Kanga’s Indoor Playcenter. Having family time and having the ability to play with our kids is so important. Kids learn through social interaction, and they learn from their parents more than anyone else. By spending time with our kids, we teach them lessons about caring, trust, patience, family and responsibility. We are the best teachers for our kids,” Zheng said.

With winter in our midst, it might be a little bit more difficult to take the kids to the park. Who wants to play ball when there’s ice or snow on the ground? Luckily, Long Island City is home to an indoor space called Kanga’s Playcenter, so you and the tykes can get in your much-needed family time. After meeting the owners of Kanga’s Playcenter at a business convention in 2016, the LIC location owners, Mike Zheng and Nan Yang, started working with them on opening the business in western Queens. It officially opened in September 2018. “Our favorite part of owning Kanga’s is the satisfaction that comes when my daughter asks if she can come to Kanga’s Indoor Playcenter,” Zheng said. “She’s been here many times, yet she still wants to come back. So we’ve obviously pleased our number one customer.” Zheng and Yang are married and have a daughter who was a huge inspiration for opening Kanga’s. According to Zheng, as a toddler their daughter would treat their home as a playground. She would explore the nooks and crannies of the house, but as she got older she progressed to climbing on tables and chairs. They took her to some indoor play centers in the area, but many of them lacked what they were looking for. “We tried many different places and somehow something was always missing. Many were too small, or [had] no adult seating, or didn’t have the right food and drink options, or didn’t have variety in their attractions. It was disappointing to not be able to find something in New York that both we and our daughter could enjoy together,” Zheng said.

Sky Village As a child, there’s nothing quite like witnessing your parents hang a picture you painted on the fridge, even if it was just a finger painting — talk about a self-esteem boost. As it turns out, there are many benefits to painting as a child, such as hand-eye coordination, communication, creativity progression, education of shapes and colors — plus, it is downright fun. The Astoria business Sky Village allows kids to throw paint-themed birthday parties as well as take painting classes. They provide decently priced child care for parents while keeping the kiddos’ creative juices flowing. Sky Village owner Shasta Molnar opened the paint play zone in September 2018. “What I love most about teaching children is their lack [of] ego. They don't need to prove anything to any-

one and simply paint from a place of purity and joy. Children truly love the process and therefore make the most beautiful art. The product is always secondary,” Molnar said. According to Molnar, Sky Village offers classes to children under age 4 as a preschool and art education alternative. The day camps offered are also a good way to occupy the tots as their parents head to their day jobs or non-kid-friendly engagements. Most classes range around $20 to $30. “My number one focus is to make some art that is beautiful — something that won't get tossed in the trash. This usually takes some experimentation with the kids. Sometimes we are successful, sometimes we're not, but usually through the process we discover something really good. If you take a look at the Sky Village NYC Instagram page, you will see what I'm talking about,” Molnar said.

The Sky Village Instagram makes the space look like artsy, magical fun. Pastel colors practically bleed through the photos and the kids’ excitement about crafts really shines through. Molnar remembers a birthday party they held where the partygoers painted beautiful Easter eggs, a day at camp where they took over a Queens swing set and “made Jackson Pollock style paintings that came out so beautiful they would impress Larry Gagosian.” “I keep telling the kids I'm going to sell their art in Soho — they are actually that good,” Molnar said.

The Learning Experience – Astoria As a kid, I always appreciated having another adult who wasn’t my teacher or mom to help me with my homework at the end of the day. Shout out to my after-school camp counselors. If your little learner happens to be the same way, you should check out Astoria’s The Learning Experience. The franchise, owned by couple Ruben and Silvia Gomez, opened its doors in Astoria in May 2019. The business also has locations in LIC and Bayside, Queens. Its opening had been delayed by unforeseen building complications, but the local community lended a hand: “The amazing Astoria community came together to raise our challenges to the office of Councilman Costa Constantinades,” Ruben said. “Through his office of constituent services, Josefina
Germosen advocated for these issues to be resolved to open our center. Throughout the process, the sense of community has been front and center. We are proud and honored to serve this amazing community.” The Learning Experience was built on three key principles: cognitive, physical and social — or in other words, learn, play and grow. While The Learning Experience curriculum focuses on L.E.A.P. (Learning Experience Academic Program), the center also promotes a healthy lifestyle as they engage the kids in safe physical play and provide nutritious snacks. They also have a philanthropy program so children can learn the values of sharing, giving and selflessness. “Education is very important to us,” Ruben said. “We have two daughters graduated from Northwestern and Michigan State Universities; I am a doctoral candidate at Columbia University completing my dissertation on
the effects of quality early childhood education on academic advancement. I also authored a children’s math and science series called ‘Adventures of Lilly and Tommy,’ which focuses on STEM-C education in early childhood education. Therefore, we are invested in providing quality care to the communities we serve.” The fun and education also carries on into the summer at The Learning Experience, where young ones participate paint, play music, and get active with obstacle courses and water play days.

Maintaining An Excellent Quality Of Life at North Shore Towers and Country Club to all our residents on a daily basis.” The staff is “wonderful” and what makes him especially proud is the fact that of the 75 people on his staff, “I’ve hired about 60 of them,” he said. About 15 of them have been working there even longer than he has, for more than 20 years, he pointed out. “Whether it’s the lobby staff helping out with the residents and their packages or assisting unloading their cars, the handymen addressing concerns in residents’ apartments – leaky faucets, snaking drains, etcetera – that is what they do on a daily basis,” he said.

What helps make that possible is the maintenance staff supervisor, Steve Cairo, who serves as North Shore Towers and Country Club’s General Superintendent. He’s been working there for more than 17 years in the same role, he told the Long Island Press. Cairo joined the North Shore Towers and Country Club staff in March 2002. As is the case with several key people there, it’s been a second career for him. Cairo, like several of his co-workers, served in the New York City Police Department. He retired from the NYPD after 22 years, the last seven of them as Lieutenant and Operations Coordinator of the 105th Precinct in Queens Village, the Precinct which serves North Shore Towers, he noted. For Cairo, a lot of the skills he acquired as a supervisor with the NYPD came in handy with his second career, he noted, adding there were many similarities between what he does now and what he did as a supervisor at the NYPD, including scheduling and training. Asked what he liked most about his job at North Shore Towers, he replied: “It’s a different challenge
every day. It’s a big place. There’s a lot going on. I’m always looking for ways to improve efficiency and make the place better. I continue to strive to do a better job every day.” Among the many other reasons why Cairo says he’s enjoyed working at North Shore Towers and Country Club is its “great staff,” he said, noting he supervises about 75 employees, including the handyman, the concierges, the doormen and three superintendents, one for each of the three buildings and each of them have 22 employees in their assigned building. Those three superintendents “set a good example” and make sure there’s “not a speck of dust or dirt on the carpets” of those 99 floors, which he says they check every day and vacuum as needed. The building superintendents are “really the backbone of North Shore Towers,” he said, adding: “They are very dedicated. They live on the property” and they are around to respond to any emergencies that may arise because there’s always staff on duty, regardless of what time it is. And it’s a massive property that they have to respond within. He pointed out that it includes 110 acres, 1844 apartments, 33 floors in each of the three buildings and “a lot of common areas that we have to maintain.” One of the things he said he’s most proud of is “the great job that the staff does each day, maintaining the buildings, keeping them clean, keeping them well maintained – providing a professional service
Selecting the right people to hire for the North Shore Towers staff is no easy task either. When interviewing people to work there, “I always tell them: You have to be special to work at North Shore Towers. You have to know how to smile. You have to know how to deal with people. You have to be a good person and care about people. We have a diverse population living here who must be treated with patience and respect. You have to know how to talk to people. You have to be mature. You have to act professional.” And he tends to pick the right people. “The staff is amazing,” he said, adding: “I’m confident our staff could handle any situation that may arise here. And we have.” What feels especially great is when people outside North Shore Towers visit and complement their work. For example, he pointed to building inspectors who have called the place “immaculate” in comparison to the many buildings they visit. “Our maintenance department is a vital component to the exceptional quality of life we enjoy here,” according to Linda Rappaport, On-Site Real Estate Broker at North Shore Towers. Of course, in addition to its first-rate maintenance, engineering and security staff, North Shore Towers and Country Club offers an 18-hole golf course, five Har-Tru tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, steam rooms, a hot tub, a state-of-the-art gym offering classes including Pilates and many other activities. The Club offers classes that include boxing and Pilates Reformer, a special exercise machine that’s “good for stretching your body,” says Mary Anne Langone, Country Club Manager. “A lot of our golfers take the Reformer class because it helps with their flexibility,” she adds. Pool activities include outdoor water classes, volleyball and several outdoor pool parties. There are basketball courts, boxing and billiards rooms, ping-pong and shuffleboard also. A
shley Rebecca Schultz runs an art gallery in her one-bedroom Astoria apartment, sometimes selling a painting for as much as $1,500. Schultz is a full-time freelance makeup artist, doing makeup for models and celebrities as well as weddings and other events. About five years ago she started bringing her artistic vision to the canvas. Her apartment walls are filled with with original artworks, each of which Schultz posts on Instagram upon completion. As her audience grew, she said, she began

inviting visitors — who often turned into prospective buyers — to her home to see the artwork in person. “Seeing how it looks in a home has been the best way to sell for me because it's easy to see something on a screen but when you see it actually displayed, it gives people an idea of how it would look in their home,” Schultz said. “They get a sense of where they would put it in their home, and it's a little more relaxed than, say, a gallery.” Schultz describes herself as an abstract artist, citing Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse as her greatest influences. Above her bed is proof that she’s an avid painter: a giant canvas carefully splashed with varying shades of pink, a tribute to her favorite color.
But she’s also taken an interest in continuous line drawing, meaning that she uses a single line to create each artwork, never once lifting her tool off the page. Among her newest subjects? Elephants, giraffes and other animals, designed to appeal to children. Schultz plans to mail one of the pieces to Charleston, South Carolina, where a parent is awaiting it. Some artwork was gifted to her by friends or family. She has a foolproof way of demonstrating which pieces in the apartment are for sale: if it’s framed, it’s not for sale. There’s not much leeway with that rule, although Schultz might be willing to part with a framed artwork if a client particularly adores it. Most of the framed pieces have sentimental meaning, and selling NOVEMBER 2019 I BOROMAG.COM

them is difficult to consider. In her living room hangs one of her favorite paintings — though this one wasn’t made by her. It’s a portrait of Schultz walking down the street. Her friend, Paul Aquino, a Chelsea-based artist, took a photo of her walking one night after the two had dinner in Greenwich Village. He turned it into a portrait and gave it to Schultz as a housewarming gift when she moved in last year. That one isn’t framed, but she said she’s never selling it. When she does sell a piece, a hole appears where the sold artwork once hung. That’s when she either rearranges the remaining pieces or makes something new. “I don't like when things are out of order,” she said. “So it's a little hard for me to leave things open-ended.” But generally, she rearranges the artwork every three months anyway. And even though it’s an artist’s home, there is little evidence besides the hanging pictures that an artist actually resides there. Schultz stores most of her art materials in large woven baskets above the kitchen cabinets. Her paintbrushes, though, remain in sight if you’re in the bedroom, where they stand in a pencil holder. “I leave them out because I love seeing them as daily reminders of what I do,” she explained. The baskets remind strapped-for-space New Yorkers of the creativity city residents must have when it comes to finding stor-

age space. Schultz has other vessels strategically placed around the apartment, some of which are hidden from sight completely. She keeps documents, for instance, under her bed. An out-of-sight cabinet behind the main door holds cleaning supplies and beauty products. And though the gallery attracts visitors and has lots of moving pieces, she and Ink, her 4-month-old kitten and cogallery owner, still think of it as a home. Schultz furnished most of the apartment for $2,500, finding unique items in thrift stores and using buy-and-sell apps. A bar cart that she bought from an Upper East Side maintenance man for $25
is one of her favorite household items. It came with vintage stained glass, and she adorned it with dried plants from Petals & Roots, her favorite florist in Astoria. When Schultz first came to New York, she settled in the East Village but decided she needed a change. She moved to Astoria because her best friends lived in the neighborhood, and she’s loved it ever since. “I love the restaurants. I eat at so many different restaurants here. I love Greek food. I love Mediterranean food,” she said. “I'm always at Astoria Seafood. I think Astoria Seafood is one of the bestkept secrets around here.”

But it’s not just the food she loves. “Queens for me is a place where I can rest,” she said. “I've worked an incredible amount over the past decade just really hustling hard. From Dec. 6 to Jan. 26, 2020, the Flushing stadium plays host to the first-ever Hello Panda Festival, produced by CPAA North America. Spanning 750,000 square feet, the landmark event will feature over 120 handcrafted lanterns, global food vendors curated by The World’s Fare and arts experiences including live performances, modern art exhibits, a holiday market and traditional crafts. “Hello Panda’s mission is to not only give New Yorkers and visitors something they’ve never seen before but also deliver an experience they can’t find anywhere else,” said Winston Wang, general manager of CPAA North America. “Our festival will offer a variety of immersive and social media moments that introduce guests to the artistry of lanternmaking while bringing different communities together through food and culture.” The festival’s lantern display is sure to delight with over 300,000 LED lights and several interactive elements. Some of the world’s leading lantern artisans will handcraft and paint over 120 displays to reflect the tradition, innovation and creativity of the Chinese art. Attendees can explore six different lantern theme parks which deliver distinct, immersive experiences. The never-before-seen exhibits
will be spread throughout the parks: Dream World, Holiday Wonderland, Discovery Zone, Interactive Music Zoe, Sports World and Community Interactive Zone. Display highlights include the world’s tallest Christmas tree lantern, life-sized dinosaurs and safari animals, a huge fairytale castle and a 98-foot-long light tunnel. Food will also be one of the main attractions at this year’s Hello Panda festival through a partnership with The World’s Fare. Organizers of the largest and most diverse food and drink event in New York City will lend their tastemakers to curate vendors in the tented and heated food pavilion. Foodies can choose dishes from 60 diverse vendors offering a wide selection of global cuisines. “The World’s Fare is honored to partner with Hello Panda to celebrate culture in the most diverse city in the world,” said Joshua Schneps, CEO of The World’s Fare. “There was a natural synergy between the mission of the festival and our organization and we couldn’t be more excited to take this journey together.” Hello Panda will feature both traditional and modern cultural arts through live performances, galleries and a holiday market across six giant heated tent areas. The festival will showcase nightly music from local and international acts from different genres including dance, Latin, pop and hip-hop. Visitors can also view a collection of galleries
