USING A THREE-PART TECTONIC SYSTEM, THIS PROJECT COMBINES A TIMBER FRAME, CONCRETE CORES, AND CURVILINEAR FLOOR PLATES TO DYNAMICALLY ENCOMPASS SHARED LEARNING AND EXHIBITION SPACES. THIS PROJECT ACTS AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL LANDMARK IN ITS URBAN CONTEXT, PROVIDING A SPACE TO ENJOY AND LEARN FROM NATURE.



PHASE 1: ANALYSIS
AN ANALYSIS OF A PIECE FROM REI KAWAKUBO’S 18TH CENTURY PUNK LINE. THIS DIAGRAM EXPLORES WEAVING AND CONNECTION AS A MEANS OF CREATING TENSION.

PHASE 2 : SPECULATION
USING DESIGN PRINCIPLES GLEANED FROM THE ANALYSIS OF REI KAWAKUBO’S WORK, A PHYSICAL STUDY MODEL WAS CREATED. IT IS MADE OF BALSA WOOD AND RICE PAPER AND EXPERIMENTS WITH IDEAS OF OPERABILITY AND RESTRICTIVENESS. THIS MODEL EXPLORES MOVEMENT AT DIFFERENT SCALES AND ORIENTATIONS.
PHASE 3: APPLICATION
USING A THREE-PART TECTONIC SYSTEM, THIS PROJECT COMBINES A RIGID TIMBER FRAME GRID PUNCTURED BY CONCRETE CORES WITH A SERIES OF CURVILINEAR FLOOR PLATES TO DYNAMICALLY ENCOMPASS SHARED LEARNING AND EXHIBITION SPACES. THIS PROJECT PROVIDES A SPACE TO LEARN FROM AND ENJOY NATURE, SERVING AS AN ENVIRONMENTAL LANDMARK IN THE URBAN CONTEXT.




SENSORY SIEVE HOUSING

SENSORY SIEVE ACTS AS AN OASIS WITHIN THE URBAN CONTEXT OF SYRACUSE. THE PROJECT AIMS TO USE MATERIALITY AS A MEANS OF BLOCKING, ALLOWING, AND CREATING SENSORY EXPERIENCES. AT THREE SCALES—THE SITE, BUILDING, AND UNIT—THE USER EMBARKS ON A JOURNEY BEFORE REACHING AN “OASIS.” BLENDING AND LAYERING ARE USED TO DIFFERENTIATE THE FEELING OF A SPACE AND DEFINE ONE’S JOURNEY THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT.
AT THE SCALE OF THE SITE, THICK VEGETATION TAKES OVER, SPREADING TO ALL CORNERS OF THE PLOT WHILE ALSO REACHING BEYOND THE PLOT BARRIER TO ENVELOP ALMOND STREET AND THE SURROUNDING SITES. THIS FOREST DISSIPATES SOUND, SMELL, AND SIGHT, ACTING AS THE FIRST BARRIER BETWEEN THE FAST-PACED CITY AND THE USER, OFTEN SOMEONE WHO LIVES OR WORKS DOWNTOWN.
THE FACADE OF THE BUILDING EXPLORES HOW SENSES CAN BE ALTERED THROUGH DENSITY AND LAYERING. AN EXTERNAL METAL MESH FILTERS LIGHT AND VIEWS. THE MESH OSCILLATES BETWEEN BEING TIGHT AND LOOSE FROM THE FACADE. WHEN LOOSE, A GAP IS CREATED THAT ALLOWS AMBIENT LIGHT AND PROVIDES SPACE FOR PLANTERS. WHEN TIGHT, LIGHTING BECOMES HARSHER, CREATING A BETTER WORKING ENVIRONMENT. ON EITHER SIDE OF THE CURTAIN WALL IS AN OPERABLE CURTAIN SYSTEM. THESE CURTAINS WORK IN TANDEM TO PARTIALLY OR COMPLETELY FILTER OUT SENSORY INPUT FROM THE EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT.


WITHIN THE UNIT, AN OPEN PLAN PROVIDES THE USER WITH A NEW JOURNEY. FROM THE FRONT DOOR TO THE MOST PRIVATE LOCATION IN THE UNIT—ONE’S BEDROOM, EACH UNIT’S VERSION OF AN OASIS—THE EXPERIENCE UNFOLDS. THE FLOOR’S MATERIAL CHANGES FROM AREA TO AREA ALONG WITH THE PROGRAM, GIVING EACH SPACE A DISTINCTLY NEW FEEL WITHOUT PARTITIONS. WHERE PARTITIONS DO EXIST, THEY FUNCTION AS SENSORY BARRIERS. EACH MATERIAL AND THICKNESS IS DERIVED FROM THE NEEDS OF THE PROGRAM ON EITHER SIDE.
WALL MATERIALITY ON RESIDENTIAL FLOORS, HALLWAYS ARE LONG AND WINDING, CREATING ANOTHER JOURNEY FOR THE USER. THIS TIME, THE OASIS THEY ARE TRYING TO REACH IS THEIR UNIT. AS ONE LIVES IN THIS BUILDING, THIS JOURNEY BECOMES MORE AND MORE FAMILIAR. EACH LEVEL IS DEFINED BY THE MATERIAL AND TEXTURE OF THE FLOORPLATE, ALLOWING USERS TO KNOW WHICH FLOOR THEY ARE
ON BASED SOLELY ON WHAT THEY SEE AND FEEL. SIMILARLY, WALLS THROUGHOUT EACH HALLWAY FEATURE DISTINCT MATERIALS THAT CHANGE AS USERS MAKE THEIR WAY THROUGH THE CORRIDOR. THIS CONDITION MAKES EACH USER’S JOURNEY UNIQUELY THEIR OWN. SHARED COMMUNITY SPACES ARE CONSISTENTLY MARKED THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT, MAKING THEM EASY TO FIND EVEN WHEN THEIR LOCATION CHANGES FROM FLOOR TO FLOOR.

A NATURE CENTER AND BOTANY LAB LOCATED ON CLARKE RESERVATION IN JAMESVILLE, NY. INSPIRED BY BOTANIST MILDRED FAUST, THIS PROJECT SERVES AS A CENTER FOR EDUCATION, RECREATION, AND CREATIVITY FOR THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY, WITH A FOCUS ON ENGAGING WITH NATURE. THE DESIGN OF THIS PROJECT WAS INSPIRED BY THE JUXTAPOSITION BETWEEN SHARP CUTS AND CURVILINEAR FORMS.

PHASE 1 : ANALYSIS
WITHIN A GLACIER EXISTS A COMPLEX SERIES OF CAVES CREATED BY SITTING WATER THAT BORES HOLES DOWN FROM THE SURFACE OF THE ICE. IN ADDITION, WATER FLOWS IN AND OUT BELOW THE GLACIER, LEADING TO THE MELTING OF ICE BENEATH THE SURFACE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, CALVING OCCURS.

PHASE 2: SPECULATION
AN ANALYSIS OF THE KTIMA HOUSE IN ANTIPAROS, GREECE, FOCUSED ON THE FORMAL EFFECTS OF RETAINING WALLS. THIS IDEA IS EXPLORED THROUGH A SPECULATIVE DRAWING USING A BLANK LANDSCAPE.

PHASE 3: APPLICATION
A THREE-PART SYSTEM OF RETAINING WALLS, CURVILINEAR FORMS, AND TERRACES IS IMPLEMENTED THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT AT DIFFERENT SIZES AND ORIENTATIONS. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO DO MOST OF THEIR CIRCULATING IN AREAS WHERE THE TERRACE FLATTENS AND WIDENS.

CLARKE RESERVATION STATE PARK IS HOME TO UNIQUE GEOLOGY. IT HAS DIVERSE SOIL MADE UP PREDOMINANTLY OF LIMESTONE. BECAUSE OF THIS, ONLY SMALL PORTIONS OF THE SITE ARE SUITABLE FOR BUILDING.
