FULANJANJO KÓRDÁ

Proposal for Archstorming’s architecture competition for Senegal elemantary school. Home is the first learning space, where culture and traditions transmit from generation to generation. A Second Home, Fulanjanjo Kórdáà, in Mandinka language, is a place where many different people learn together from one another to build and grow as a community. A space of mutual construction, where children can feel they belong to. The project aims to provide not only a physical optimal environment, but also a better place with the facilities children need to learn. The design mainly adapts to what the place has given and goes around nature. It creates an open centrality which flows around the tree, and leaves it as a symbol of what was there and can be preserved. The module is the main constructive piece, from which every space is designed. This gives the possibility of easy teaching, learning the technique, and also to grow further in the future. It is constructed with cemented ‘bahareque’, a simple and practical constructive system, that can be easily construct and maintained by the community. Using local and new skills helps improve the community ownership and appropriation. Materials are also from local sustainable sources what implies less impacts and higher savings. Having a second home is important for children as it is a safe space for learning and growing every day. Fulanjanjo Kórdáà, a second home for everyone.

PLAZA PANCHE

“Plaza panche” is a competition proposal introducing innovative ideas to renovate the existing market place of the small and sunny town Anapoima, close to the capital. This space is reinvented towards two main concepts the “panches”, that were the aborigins inhabiting the zone before it became popular as a relaxing and vacational city for the people living on the caotic capital; and the importance of triggering senses in a marketplace. First of all, the “panches” indigenous were characterized by their hability to work the fertile and warm lands but also by being skilled traders. Following this idea, the proposal aims to give back the oportunity to exploit the locals potential by encouraging, training and learning with them, and by cutting out the middleman in order to allow farmers to earn the real value of their work. Being skilled traders, the proposal opens the opportunity to bring the market to the people facilitating the exchange of products in different areas and by different modules types around the town, giving the central market a whole new range of possibilities. In that way, the central market is envisioned as a path, from were different sense starts to awaken. The combination between the colours of the fresh products coming from the fields nearby, the smell of mango’s marmelade, and the taste of the local flavours mixed into innovative dishes on the restaurants of the market, creates an open scenario where local and foreign knowledge can integrate freely.

FIGHTING INEQUITY

This project aim, is to analize the inequity phenomena present in a marginal border of Colombia’s capital city, Bogotá. This neighborhoods, “El Povenir”, “Cassandra” and “Prados de Alameda” are located in the West border of the city towards the small municipality of “Mosquera”. This specific territories are under our gaze because despite of their problems we consider them as territories of potentialities. That’s the reason why we are proposing mayor urban changes from punctual urban strategies that will help us to envision a suitable future for this fragment of the city .

After considering the main urban phenomena affecting the living conditions of the sector, to overcome this situation, a mayor scenario arises. Here the border condition is exploited in order to involve the neighbourhood in diferent dinamics following different urban scales, aknowledging the expansion of the city towards this area through projects of development of infrastructure (the construction of the new airport and the commuter train connection). By these means, the project is looking forward to fusion the local and global scale in ordear to attract a wide range of oportunities the inhabitants and make the surroundings of Bogotá river an esential element on the development of the capital city in the next 50 years.

This project consists of an energetic evaluation for an old building, like many existing structures in Turin. In this case, the assessment of several passive factors (e.g., physical properties of materials, isolation) and active factors (e.g., heating system and energy distribution network) allows us to develop a comparative study between the design proposal to enhance the living conditions of the building’s residents evaluating the initial investment compared to annual energic savings (in euros). In this manner, to propose an economical and energetically feasible solution to attract investors to the project utilizing various approaches to improve the property’s energetic class and reduce the carbon footprint. To entice shareholders and ameliorate the property’s spatial quality, new apartments are added to the complex in the same way as balconies that work as thermal isolators for the most critical building’s façades. In this way there is a new set of “internal gardens” in the balconies of the apartments working as a buffer space to ensure comfort in the overall building.

The objective is to take advantage of the Chinese’s agricultural landscape as a new key element of the proposal, not just as a territory to satisfy the population’s feed necessity but also as a new potential opportunity for the rural chinese population historically at a disadvantage. The project consists of the intervention on an urban scale that aims to attract new inhabitants into the district by diversifying the activities and cultivation techniques that would trigger a new wave of relationships and dynamics for the country’s people and improve their life quality. Therefore, the approach seeks a series of spaces for mixed uses, integrating technology and transportation (“Highline”) that connects the different sector’s key points and various citizens.

Looking forward to integrating ideas and disciplines, the project is organized by three (3) stripes which conserve and highlight all the richness of the old factory and redistribute the inner spaces new activities taking into account their permeability, transparency, and relationship with the city. In this order, the adjoined stripes with the University are wider open, and flexible that rigidized as they move away from the educational sphere to go into small steps towards the private research, and prototype design, required for the enterprises to share common spaces. The proximity of The Alps inspires the roof’s angular shape that conditions several heights in the inner spaces as an architectural representation of Turin’s urban landscape as a characteristic element of the city.

THESIS

HOW CAN VENEZUELAN MIGRANTS TRANSFORM THE SPACES OF OPPORTUNITIES IN BOGOTÁ?

A methodology to propose strategic framework on urban re-activation using migrant entrepreneurship as a force for integration.

This research is rooted in the challenges and opportunities brought by the Venezuelan migration crisis in Colombia during the last decade. By shifting from the aid-oriented approach to a vision of empowering migrants from their entrepreneurship attitude as agents of transformation in urban spaces through processes of spatial agency. The work analyzes the profiles of Venezuelan refugees and their intertwining relation with the use of urban spaces in Bogotá. This thesis proposes a methodology useful as a base for communication and future implementation of urban strategies for spatial re-activation. The methodology intends to bring together the practical expertise and the technical knowledge of migrants, locals, community leaders, policymakers, architects, and urban planners to be used as a starting point for dialogue. It also includes a preliminary set of proposals for urban transformations for different situations analyzed in detail, that can be adapted and replicated following local needs and specific circumstances.

THE METHODOLOGY

Process of research , analysis and implementation , to propose a set of strategies to transform spaces of opportunities within the city, addresing socio-spatial integration recognizing the potential of transformation born by the communities, the resilience o f the migrants and the way they are building solutions using all the resources available and creating the ones that are not.

It can be used as a base to support architects and urban planners in dealing with identified categories of spaces, encouraging them to propose specific tools.

The aim of this proposal is to engage key national and international actors, migrants, and locals to co-create spaces of integ ration.

CONCLUSIONS

This work proposes an innovative vision to deal with fragments of the city and vacant spaces seeing them from the perspective of spaces of opportunities. At the same time, opens up a new perspective to integrate the Venezuelan migrant population, their resilience, empowerment, networks and entrepreneurial attitude as potential agents of transformation of the areas on decay of the city.

The methodology seeks to be the forerunner to create tools, spaces of dialogue and integration policies that would allow the migrants to develop their capabilities to the fullest, while contributing to the urban renovation and reactivation of vacant spaces in Bogotá.

DESCRIPTION:

The aim of this project is to imagine and reinterpret the city of Paris as an urban center of the XXI century, keeping in mind the urban morphology and it’s denomination as “city of lights”. in the wake of the analysis of the city and the zone of Saint-Denis, Paris is now presented as the “constellation city”, in which a plan has been made in order to decongest the city center and “quartier des affaires”, by proposing an scheme of descentralized city composed by many interrelated autonomous nodes working as a whole. For Saint-Denis, is proposed to create an “urban cell”, as a fragment of the city created in order to encourage relattionships between humans, nature and specially pedestrian paths. Here, facilities and passive transportation predominate, intersecting with natural water paths and public spaces aiming to generate a more balanced and less polluted city.
