ourne is the first town visitors encounter when entering Barnstable County. It has the distinction of occupying most of the land through which the Cape Cod Canal flows. Whether traveling to the Cape on Route 3 or Route 495 to 25, visitors must pass through at least one of Bourne’s many villages.

English colonists lived in this area as early as 1627. The first free enterprise in America was located near the west end of the land cut of the present Cape Cod

Canal. The Aptucxet Trading Post was situated on a piece of land between a creek and two rivers; the Manomet River connected with Massachusetts Bay, and the Monument River connected to a body of water that eventually reached the entrance of New York Harbor and the Hudson River. It was at this trading post that the Pilgrims traded goods with the Dutch colonies from the New York area.

And it was here that the first currency in America was developed: it was called capecodcanalchamber.org

wampum and was made from purple parts of quahog shells. A replica of the Aptucxet Trading Post is situated off Shore Road in Bourne Village.

In the 1880s, Bourne became an ideal location for manufacturing. Power was provided by windmills and water wheels, and raw manufacturing materials were available in the region. Finished products could be shipped out on trains or ships.

One noteworthy company was the Keith Car Works of Sagamore, which built freight cars. It began work in 1826 and remained in operation for over 100 years.

Many houses built by the company can still be seen on both sides of the east end of the Canal.

As the large industrial centers in Massachusetts prospered, the state’s wealthy residents wanted to escape the cities and enjoy the country. They scouted the Cape Cod Canal Region and decided it was perfect for their needs. The cool ocean breezes, sandy beaches and wooded lands made it an ideal summer retreat for the whole family. Over the next few years, many elaborate and expensive summer homes were built in the area.

President Grover Cleveland, Shakespearean actor Joseph Jefferson and Boston Globe founder Charles H. Taylor were a few of the region’s famous summer residents.

The features that attracted people here over 100 years ago are still present today, including moderate year-round temperatures, sandy beaches with water temperatures conducive to water sports, abundant fishing and shell fishing locations, and wooded areas in which to observe and enjoy nature. It is an excellent region to use power and sailing vessels both large and small. ncorporated in 1639, Sandwich is the oldest of the Cape towns. During the town’s first 100 years, the English settlers farmed the land and ran small coastal fishing enterprises.

Sandwich was also an important stagecoach stop on the Old King’s Highway (now Route 6A) from Boston to Provincetown;

it quickly became a center for travel and tourism. Taverns and inns cropped up along the main street. Wealthy Boston travelers on business and vacation stayed at these establishments en route to other parts of Cape Cod. before the Revolutionary War and was later renamed for its most popular guest, Daniel Webster. Across town, Newcomb’s Tavern, served as the Tory headquarters.

In the early 1800s, factories were started in the region, taking advantage of the national resources of land, waterpower and wood fuel. The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company was founded in 1825 and grew steadily over a 63-year period to employ 500 workers who created various types of glassware. The company is best known for its pressed-glass items, which could be produced quickly, inexpensively and in large quantities for sale to middleclass shoppers desiring fine objects for their homes. The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company closed in 1888 after the center of pressed-glass production shifted from New England to the Midwest, where the cost of glassmaking was less expensive. Today, glass made at the Sandwich factory is a highly prized antique collectible. The Sandwich Glass Museum, located across from the Grist Mill in the center of Sandwich village, displays thousands of glass objects made at the factory during the 19th century.

areham was discovered in 1603

by Bartholomew Gosnold, an Englishman who sailed across the North Atlantic Ocean to explore the East Coast of North America. Gosnold named Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, the Elizabethan Islands, Cuttyhunk and Agawam—better known as Wareham—as well as other local towns.

In 1666, local tribes sold Agawam to the Plymouth Colony for grazing lands.

The tribes did not realize the full extent of what they had signed; the sale gave the Pilgrims exclusive rights to Agawam.

Early on, the residents recognized the importance of herring. Even in Colonial times, strict rules were set for how many herring could be caught. Because herring

was a necessity of life, catching and preserving the fish became a family affair.

Oysters were another greatly sought after food found in the local waters.

Bog ore was discovered while digging in the fields. This ore proved useful for making nails, farm implements and ironware. Many homesteads set up furnaces and forges so that they could process the ore. During the processing, it was discovered that if charcoal was burned instead of wood, the fire would be hotter and the ore would then harden and turn to steel. This steel could be used to make stronger nails. In 1819, the first cut-nail factory in the region was started; many other nail companies soon followed. Only one nail company is still in existence: The Tremont Nail Company holds the distinction of owning one of the oldest operating industrial buildings in America. Realizing it’s historical significance, the town has purchased the property in order to ensure its preservation.

Overlooking the calm waters of Buzzards Bay is the picturesque seaside village of Onset. Once a favored destination for Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey and Cab Calloway, the village continues its fondness for the Blues with its Annual Onset Blues Festival held each August. Today, Onset is a burgeoning vacation destination again, with the resurgence of newly renovated Victorian mansions and cottages that line the sandy crescent-shaped beach.

Wareham offers an exceptional location within easy distance to the Boston and Providence metropolitan areas. All the tourist amenities of the Cape Cod area are available in Wareham. The town has over 54 miles of coastline enhanced by beaches, estuaries, rivers and communities.

Cape Cod Canal A History

The Cape Cod Canal—it’s the first thing visitors see when they come to Cape Cod and the last thing they see when they leave.

N

ow celebrating its 103rd year of existence, this man-made structure epitomizes the region that it separates from the rest of the state. Part of what makes the canal so special is its connection to the people that cross paths with this body of water on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis.

Perhaps no one is more familiar with the canal and its past than Bourne Selectman Donald (Jerry) Ellis who spends his days as the superintendent of the Sagamore Cemetery, one of the most haunted places in all of Cape Cod. To find out why, one has to go back to 1909 when there was not even a canal.

By that time, the planning and preparation to build a cut-through of Cape Cod was well underway and in June of that year the first shovels were planted in the ground by the project’s financier August Belmont II to ceremoniously kick-start the massive

undertaking.

In order for the project to be successful, there had to be major changes to the Cape’s landscape. Chief among those was the relocation of 17 bodies buried in the Bourne Cemetery and 45 bodies buried in the Emory Ellis Cemetery as both plots stood directly in the path where the canal was to be built.

The move was not looked upon kindly by Emory Ellis who stopped the building of the canal in 1909 “because he wanted a choice spot in the Sagamore Cemetery to move his family members to,” Donald Ellis said. “So when it came time to move everything, he sat in front of the cemetery with a shotgun and wouldn’t let anyone touch anything until he was satisfied his family got the right spot in the Sagamore Cemetery. He was an ornery obstructionist and a typical old Yankee, but he got what he wanted.”

move the bodies there was a problem. The coffins were not properly aligned with the gravestones, leading to what Mr. Ellis believes are some troubled spirits that haunt the Sagamore Cemetery.

It has made the cemetery, located roughly 200 yards from the canal, a popular locale for those interested in the paranormal.

During his time caring for the grounds and its deceased inhabitants, Mr. Ellis said, he has reported eerie sensations—goose bumps, hair standing on the end of his arms, the smell of pungent cigar smoke and an intense pressure on his chest—that are indicative of a ghostly presence.

A different kind of horror is felt by those who travel across the canal in the summertime. While traffic backups may seem like a modern ordeal, Mr. Ellis said, they are not.

“When they were building Camp Edwards in 1939, the bridges were so jammed from Wareham to [the base] they had to create a system of one-way traffic from 5 to 8 am over the bridge and then in evening it was one-way going back,” he said. “The traffic patterns and back-ups are nothing new to anyone. Outsiders get upset with it, but we live with it.”

While ghosts and traffic represent the downsides to the canal, Mr. Ellis still had high praise for the engineering marvel.

“It draws a huge amount of tourists which our whole economy on Cape Cod is based on,” he said. “This is probably one of the greatest amenities you can have.”

Fellow Bourne resident Skip Barlow, president of the town’s historical society, agreed. As owner of Barlow’s Clam Shack across from the canal rest area in Bournedale, he sees firsthand the tourists who take advantage of “the biggest free recreation area in Southeastern Massachusetts.”

These are people who take to the canal to walk, rollerblade, bike, fish and sunbathe.

“The canal is used year round by tourists and locals alike,” he said. “About three milcapecodcanalchamber.org

lion people use it for recreational purposes annually… It’s kind of a neat place and it’s free and easily accessible.”

Not only is the canal a great place to people watch, he said, it is a prime spot for boating enthusiasts. “You can see almost any kind of boat go through there at any time of year,” Barlow said. “It is pretty cool if you like boats. I’m right out there checking it out because I really enjoy those things.”

Among the more prominent boaters to travel through the canal were Phil Donahue and his wife Marlo Thomas in the 1990’s. “I was shocked by the size of their boat,” Bob King, the co-owner of Café Chew in Sandwich, recalled. “He drove it by himself. It was just him and Marlo. I asked him, ‘You can handle this by yourself?’ and he said, ‘Oh yeah.’ It was huge.”

King and his husband and business partner Tobin Wirt were invited onto the yacht which had been tied up for the evening at the Sandwich Boat Basin, adjacent to the canal. Just a few hours earlier Donahue and Thomas had dined at the Bee-hive Tavern, a Sandwich eatery that King and Wirt owned from 1992 to 2004.

“After they had dinner of course they needed to get back to the boat and they asked if we could call them a taxi,” King said. “There was no taxi at the time so we offered to give them a ride. We gave them a nice tour of Sandwich… They enjoyed that. When we got to the boat they invited us on.”

King’s other vivid memory of the canal was from his childhood when his father, an avid fisherman, would “terrify us about falling into the canal and that it would swallow you up. We couldn’t even put our toe into the water. He was afraid of the current.”

Though illegal now, at one point taking a dip in the canal was commonplace, even after the Army Corps of Engineers took

Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge

A

rare, perfect marriage of form and function, the majestic vertical lift railroad bridge has been a landmark of the Cape Cod Canal and the village of Buzzards Bay for nearly 70 years.

Constructed between 1933 and 1935 by the Phoenix Bridge Company, the bridge was designed to replace a smaller railroad bridge built in 1912, which could not accommodate the larger vessels that would be using the canal. With a horizontal span of 544 feet, the Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge was the longest lift span in the world at the time of its construction. The span is normally kept in its raised position of 135 feet above mean high water to allow ship traffic to pass through unimpeded. Controls for the bridge are located in the north tower. Huge pulleys with 16-foot sheave wheels are located in the top of each tower, and each tower has 40 cables to lift a box filled with about 1,100 tons of concrete. Since the center span weighs about 2,200 tons, these boxes create a near-perfect counterbalance; therefore, only four 150-horsepower motors and an auxiliary motor are needed to raise or lower the central span in just two and half minutes. The Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge is still considered to be the most aesthetic single-span vertical lift bridge in the world. Its distinctive features include open steel construction with Gothic scrolling and decorative tower cones topped with stainless steel globes. Aerial beacons are located on the spires and on the highest point of the central span. A major renovation of the bridge was completed in 2003, restoring it to its original grandeur so that it may provide us with many more years of pleasure and dependable service.

over control of the waterway in 1928. “We used to go swimming in it all the time,” said Wally Alden, who grew up in Sagamore and now lives in Buzzards Bay. His connection to the canal extends to his father William Alden and his uncle Burton Alden who both worked on the construction of the Sagamore Bridge which opened to traffic in 1935.

As a child, he remembered days when his father would pile his family into his Buick and drive them up to the bank of the canal to watch the boats come by. From a purely practical point of view, he noted that the canal has been beneficial for boats by cutting off the travel time it takes to go around Cape Cod. But to him, the canal is more than a utilitarian object. It is a place where he used to catch tautog, cod and flounder as a child. Now he passes on these family traditions to his 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren who visit from as far away as Florida and Texas. “We take them along the canal and they just love to sit there and watch the railroad bridge go up and down,” he said. “They are really fascinated by it.”

The public’s fascination with the canal

extends far beyond Cape Cod. “Whenever we travel and wherever we go, we tell people we live in the town before the canal,” Wareham’s Claire Smith said. “I use it as a reference because people seem to know it wherever you go.”

She too was drawn to the popular landmark at a young age. On an occasional Sunday—when she and her older sister Patricia were supposed to be in church, the pair would drive down to the canal and watch the boats pass through. “We were sworn to secrecy,” Smith laughed. “We never told our mother we actually didn’t go to church.”

Tips from a Local Expert

T

he Cape Cod Canal officially opened on July 29, 1914 as a privately operated tolled waterway. It continued to operate in this manner until March 21, 1928 when Congress directed the Army Corps of Engineers to assume operational responsibility.

This spurred a series of improvements that were completed in 1940. The improvements included construction of the bridges still in use today and the widening and deepening of the canal to its current configuration.

The Canal has been fished by local fisherman since its inception. However, after completion of the 1940 upgrades, it started to become a destination location for fisherman from around the world.

The Canal’s location in the striper migra- tion pattern, along with its rocky bottom and unique tidal flow,

provide many fish species great habitat. The most desirable fish is the striped bass. Canal stripers can reach weights of over 50 pounds with fish in the 20-to-30 pound range fairly common. The Canal offers extensive public access which makes it an attractive place to fish. The rocky terrain is challenging for anglers but they brave it because it is one of the most productive waters in the northeast.

Successful fishing of the Canal requires preparation. Canal fishing rods are long, generally 9-to-11 feet and require backbone to cast lures weighing one-to-four ounces. They must have enough power to fight a 30-to-40 pound striper in fast moving water. Rod prices range from $50 to $500 and more. The canal fishing reel must also be selected with the above rod requirements in mind.

Generally, reels in the 5000-7000 size are appropriate for the Canal. Reel speed will relate to the type of fishing you will be doing. If you like to drift chunks of bait, a long, strong rod with a strong slower speed reel will be the ticket. If you prefer to cast and retrieve lures, then medium to heavy capecodcanalchamber.org

weight rods and faster retrieve reels will generally be the choice. Reels are priced from about $50 to $1000 and more. A quick word about lines; there are two primary lines used on the Canal today, monofilament (mono) and braid. Mono is inexpensive but tends to have stretch, coil memory and a shorter lifespan.

Braid is 3-4 times as expensive but has little stretch, virtually no memory and lasts longer. Braid also casts further then mono so it is the choice of about 90% of the fisherman on the Canal. All Canal fishermen know that the fish are always 10 yards further than you can cast! Filling your reel with braided line will cost about $30-40. Mono will cost about $10.

Once you have chosen your rod, reel and line you need lures or bait to complete your tackle. Your local tackle shop can advise you on the right bait for the type of fish you are after. You will also need hooks or rigs, again these can be recommended by your local tackle shop. Most bait fisherman also use weights which are generally lead “bank style” sinkers.

If you choose to fish with lures, the selection is limitless. When selecting a lure, think about where you want to fish in the water column: surface, sub-surface or bottom. Most lures are designed to fish at a specific depth. At least a couple of lures to cover each fishing depth is recommended to get you started. Start with some basic “old reliable” lures, then seek the advice of your local tackle shop for “what’s hot” as it can change daily. Also, consideration of the time of day, bait fish in the Canal and recent behavior of the fish will help you select your lure for that day.

Now that you have the correct tackle, where do you fish and how do you get there? The Canal public access is a major attraction for fisherman. There are a few large formal parking lots and a capecodcanalchamber.org

Get yourself a Canal map that shows parking, landmarks, and fishing locations.

Canal fishermen often use bikes with rod holders and baskets that allow them to travel along the Canal. They search for breaking fish or rips which set up in specific locations during a certain time of the tide cycle. And speaking of tides, get yourself a tide chart. These are a “must have” and are used by the best fisherman on the Canal (available at capecodcanal. us). The Canal is very unique in that the flow of water changes from east to west and back again approximately every 6.25 hours. Combine this with different high and low tides at each end of the Canal and you can be sure that this will affect fishing.

And now finally the million dollar question, “where do I catch fish?” Well the truth is there is no one place where you can catch fish all the time. Such a spot would be pretty crowded! Fish move in and out of the Canal as well as up and down it. Experienced fisherman pay attention to the tide and current flow changes to help map out a plan of attack. Checking with the local tackle shop can help as well. Getting on your bike and riding the Canal to look for action is a great way to learn and the ride is good exercise!

Heritage opens its season (April 15-October 9) with a special exhibit, Painted Landscapes: Contemporary Views, featuring works by Paul Resika, April Gornik, Jim Holland, and 44 other premier American contemporary landscape painters who present a range of styles and approaches in a collection that challenges the notion of landscape painting and addresses what the genre is today. Guest curator for the exhibit is New York art expert Lauren Della Monica.

Heritage is home to gems of the automobile world that celebrate America’s love of automobiles as well as technological innovation, featuring vehicles that convey excellence in restoration and historic significance. This season’s “Collector’s Corner” features rarely seen autos on loan from private collections, including a 1965 Cadillac with 1,700 original miles, a 1964.5 Mustang Convertible, and a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT350. The Heritage Annual Auto Show (June 10; rain date: June 11) is a popular, family-friendly event that highlights antique and classic automobiles, hot rods, and custom cars in excellent or restored condition. New this year: motorcycles! Throughout the season, behind-the-scenes auto tours provide an exclusive peek at Heritage’s automobile collection in storage and inside information.

Heritage’s focus on family-friendly fun includes Family Fun Fridays (Fridays, from June-August 18), featuring music, entertainment, activities, and picnicking on the grounds. Families also can spend hours in the popular two-acre Hidden Hollow™ outdoor family discovery space with a gigantic treehouse, and take as many free rides on the vintage carousel as they want.

Also opening on April 15 is The Adventure Park at Heritage, which includes aerial trails in the treetops and interpretive nature trails below.

As the largest public garden in Southern New England and home of the most comprehensive collection of rhododendrons and hydrangeas in the country, Heritage’s gardens are truly a feast for the eyes! (May 27-June 4) and Hydrangea Festival (July 7-16), which features the new North American Hydrangea Test Garden. New this season, visitors can experience the mobile food movement and enjoy Heritage after hours at Food Truck Fridays (June 2 and 23). Participants get exclusive access to this season’s special exhibit, enjoy music in the gardens, and savor dinner and dessert from some of the area’s best-known food trucks.

Fall activities include something new this year—the Heritage Hoppy Fall Festival (September 23). Hoppy Fest features beer tastings from local Massachusetts breweries—including Cape Cod Beer, Cisco Brewers, Independent Fermentations Brewing, Castle Island Brewing Company, and more—along with a presentation on the history of beer brewing, a demonstration of home brewing techniques, and a talk and book signing with Lauren Clark, author of Crafty Bastards. Visitors can also enjoy fall-themed treats and take photos under an archway of living hops grown at Heritage.

hen we think of autumn, most of us don’t typically think of Cape Cod as our “getaway” location- but it may be time to rethink.

Many tourists regard “The Cape” as a “summer” destination, but there are those among us, who know better.

Prices drop, crowds subside, there is accessible parking, and nature, is at its best.

We boast the most beautiful seascapes and sunsets on the east coast and those superb sunsets don’t disappear after Labor

Day. Warm water temperatures last us well into October, most markedly on the Buzzards Bay side of the Cape, and you will find no shortage of beautiful coves and inlets to paddle.

A full day of paddling can take you from Pocasset Harbor, out and around Bassetts Island, by Wings Neck Light House and clear over to the Mashnee dike, where you can beach your kayak or paddle board and take a swim.

The more conservative paddler can drop in at the protected Pocasset River,

and head to the marsh or the mouth of the river with plenty to see along the way. Majestic osprey nests will surprise you in common and some unusual locations, and if you are lucky you may spot a kingfisher nesting in its bank, or a bevy of swans.

A paddle around Toby Island in Monks Cove is a local favorite.

Home to a cozy mansion that once served as a monastery, complete with osprey, and shellfish beds give the island a little bit of everything ”Cape Cod”.

The kayak fisherman may also be lucky enough to hook a keeper, as there is typically an abundance of bluefish and stripers come fall. It is hard to beat a Monks Cove sunset!

Birders can catch the great migration

of the heron and egret , by ducking into the Pocasset River to the south, or the Back River, to the north, and there are tour operators and rental companies that are open all year. When in doubt, consult the pros.

Fall is the great time to take a paddling tour, as the groups are generally smaller and quieter, so it can be easier to spy your favorite waterfowl.

Remember to be safe, and wear you life jacket, as it is the law if paddling after October 15th and before May 15th. Also check the water temperature before you embark on your days journey. Wetsuits are always a wise idea when in doubt, and a local tide chart is a must!

The first annual Cape Cod Scallop Festival was born in 1970, the brainchild of local fishermen looking to attract tourists, entertain families, and enjoy the abundant local scallops. Today, 48 years later and still running, the Cape Cod Scallop Fest has grown into a beloved community tradition, drawing thousands to the area and continuing to entertain families from across the region. Nurtured by the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce, the event helps support their mission of promoting, representing, and educating members and the community for their economic and social benefits. This includes funding the operation of two visitor centers, local high school scholarships, free concerts in the park, and donations to local food pantries.

Having outgrown its Main Street, Buzzards Bay Park location, the Cape Cod Scallop Fest moved in 2014 to the Cape Cod Fairgrounds in East Falmouth. An estimated 25,000 people are expected to join the festivities at its newly designed village in 2017!

e invite you to get up close with the hidden beauty of the Cape aboard the Cape Cod Central Railroad! The Cape Train currently runs regularly from May through October. Additionally, we offer a Thanksgiving Dinner Train and holiday themed trains in November and December. The Cape Cod Central Railroad offers narrated Coastal Excursion Trains, elegant Cape Cod Dinner Trains and various special events including the Rails & Ales Beer Tasting Train, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Brunch Trains and much more. Departing regularly from Hyannis, with select additional departures from Buzzards Bay and North Falmouth, the Cape Cod Central Railroad is a popular tourist attraction.
