The long neck of swans is an important tool they use to collect food on the bottom, reaching greater depths than ducks. Swans are the most aquatic of all the Anatidae (a family to which geese and ducks also belong): their legs, which are very short in relation to their body size, make them very awkward on land.
I decided within the project to deal precisely with this very special characteristic. Swans are the animals with one of the highest numbers of vertebrae in the neck, which makes it extremely flexible. Giraffes, for example, are also flexible, but not in a way comparable to swans, which have a specially developed neck that allows them to turn and twist without choking themselves, to clean themselves with their beaks or even just to put their head under the wing to sleep.
Shape modelling of the swan
B_Lamp is a children’s lamp inspired by the constitution of the swan’s neck. I therefore took my cue from its flexibility to create a folding structure that is quite geometric, but at the same time organic. The shape is reminiscent of the swan in particular because of the bulb housing, which is shaped like a beak, and the ‘curves’ formed by the mechanism.
The lamp is very easy to assemble and disassemble, pieces can be added and removed to make up new species, colour combinations and different birds. The lamp has no cables, but can be charged via a USB power supply, hidden in the back of the ‘beak’, so that the lamp can be used as a play tool and not just as part of the furniture.
The name B_Lamp refers to ‘bird’ and ‘build’.
Hard glossy ABS plastic material
LIght structure with rounded shapes
Warm emissive light, tha light section rotates as well
Simple mechanism with big screws

Different combinations with rotated elements, or added or removed modules. All three the pieces can be adjusted just by sliding the elemts. Also the “beak” can be rotated just on his axis of 360°.
Here are displayed different possible versions available that resemble other species by using the same concept. The goal would be to stimulate creativity and having fun with a daily object.
The components included are the base, the long module, the small module, the “beak” holder and the “beak”. In addition there are 3 screws, one long and two short. The colours vary depend on the product chosen.
