performing arts center at arts square
m. arch spring 2024 portman prize studio - instructor Jude LeBlanc - in collaboration with Ruby Anderson
The Randall Performing Arts Center is situated in Georgia Tech’s Arts Square - an intersection of arts, technology, campus and city life. The proposed master plan for Arts Square took inspiration from the campus eco-loop with its many garden and yard spaces to pull students and act as a bridge to the arts community.
With large amounts of student housing, artist-in-residence hotel space, and office space in the Square, the Randall Performing Arts Center anchors the Square by improving the pedestrian experience at the intersection of North Avenue and Marietta Street. A shared lobby at this intersection brings the students and community to many spaces including performance, recital, blackbox theaters, as well as a musician’s network and dance studios with visibility to the community.
The history of lumber and craftsmanship on the site is reflected through the idea of parallax and the visual effect of moving through a pine forest.
The Randall Performing Arts Center presents its lobby to North Avenue and Marietta Street, inviting people into the Arts Square.
The improved pedestrian connection from North Avenue to Marietta Street is fully accessible and acts as the front porch to Georgia Tech’s Arts Square. The existing Randall Brothers building houses a public food hall, maintaining the retail corridor of Marietta Street.
The Randall Performing Arts Center includes many theater and recital halls, as well as a large film studio underground. Above a podium with a green terrace and art exhibition space is flexible office space for future artists or tenants.
The original Randall Brothers building will host a food hall with retail space available. Dance studios will float over the pedestrian connection to North Avenue.
undulating boundaries across the south river
m. arch fall 2023 - instructor Kimberly Steiner
River and creek beds naturally undulate over time, which is caused by rates of erosion and runoff that affect water’s turbidity. With turbidity as an indicator of river health, measures to decrease runoff and erosion will lead to a healthier, clearer river. Exposing and engaging community in recreational and educational activities tied to the South River Network and its turbidities will encourage preservation.
The proposed Poole Creek Greenway converges with the proposed South River Greenway, forming a connection point where the creek and river naturally meet.
Conservation and encouraged wetland growth will help filter runoff and stormwater while protecting vital habitats.
A nature center unites these with community gathering spaces and education about environmental and river health.
bethel heights vineyard + retreat
b.s. arch spring 2022- instructor John Peponis + Jim Budd - in collaboration with AnLi French + Leah Huck
Nestled into the rolling landscape of the Willamette Valley, Bethel Heights Vineyard stands as a pillar of the fine wine industry. Bethel Heights Retreat provides an elevated and intimate guest experience without expanding wine production.
The addition of a Family Gallery serves to connect guests to the family and vineyard’s history and roots in the land. Cellar Club members can extend their visit by staying in a suite with access to exclusive spaces such as a private tasting room, kitchen, and garden. There, members can enjoy private wine tastings, cooking classes, and gardening lessons. The central Garden contrasts the surrounding vineyards and acts to honor Bethel Heights’ respect for the natural landscape.
